Image By Dmitri Vaccinium from Unsplash.com Bicycle travel (and travel in general) should be an experience where you expect to encounter the unexpected. If you choose to book a trip with an exclusively American company with trips led by American guides, you will probably get a trip without much (or any) cultural immersion. Without that immersion, you may not learn as much as you could if your…

"We're excited to both continue to give to our long-time partners and to have added World Bicycle Relief to Buck Up For Bikes this year as we expand our bike shipping services to the global market," said William Alcorn, Bikeflights President.
Originally created in 2016, Buck Up for Bikes (BUFB) has been growing ever since. From the program’s inception to date, we have raised and given out more than $141,000.
“With a bicycle, people in remote and rural areas are able to change their worlds. They have an easier way to access basic goods and services, have the opportunity to earn a living, travel to school, reach a healthcare facility and access water, things that people living in towns and cities often take for granted,” said Claire Geiger, Director of Global Partnerships at World Bicycle Relief. “With the support of Bikeflights’ Buck Up For Bikes, we are able to ensure that more people can experience the power of bicycles through our programs.”

Bill Nesper, Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists, which now serves as the National Office of Trips for Kids said, "The League and our Trips for Kids members are thrilled to have the support of Bikeflights. Buck Up for Bikes has long been an important partner of Trips for Kids, helping empower youth through life-changing experiences on bikes. We're excited for this support and how it will impact Trips for Kids chapters as they do more great work in 2024."

"NICA's goal is to empower every kid to be part of a thriving and engaged cycling community, and we couldn't do that without the support of our incredible partners. The Buck Up for Bikes program is a great way for the cycling community to be a part of getting #MoreKidsOnBikes,” said Amanda Carey, NICA President. “Thank you, Bikeflights, for your commitment to youth cycling!"

"Bikeflights is a crucial partner to Little Bellas in helping us ensure that all girls have access to program-ready bikes,” said Martha Flynn, Little Bellas Minnesota Regional Coordinator. “In one instance, a Minnesota Little Bellas showed up on a bike that was much too small for her. We were able to turn around a shipment of one of our Gear Up bikes from Vermont to Minnesota in a few days and have the bike ready to go for her the next program day. On this larger bike, she was able to take on more miles and felt confident charging down the trail. Thank you Bikeflights! “

Dave Wiens, Executive Director of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) said, “Bikeflights knows keeping kids riding requires fun trails and more trails close to home. We're grateful for the continued support of Bikeflights. It fuels our work for more and better trails, so the fantastic Buck up for Bikes program recipients have great places to introduce kids to mountain biking."
Per our Buck Up for Bikes program, you have the option to contribute from one to five bucks during checkout whenever you book bike shipping online. We not only collect and track all donations, but also supplement collected contributions and cover the costs of administering and publicizing the program.

Northeast floods devastate ‘heartbroken’ farmers (AP) Well before it was warm enough to plant seedlings in the ground, farmer Micah Barritt began nursing crops like watermelon, eggplant and tomatoes—eventually transplanting them from his greenhouse into rich Vermont soil, hoping for a bountiful fall harvest. Within a few hours last week, those hopes were washed away when flood waters inundated the small farm, destroying a harvest with a value he estimated at $250,000. “The loss of the crops is a very tangible way to measure the flood, but the loss of the work is hard to measure,” said Barritt, one of five co-owners of Diggers’ Mirth Collective Farm in Burlington, Vermont. “We’re all grieving and heartbroken because of this.” That heartbreak was felt by farmers in several Northeast states after floods dealt a devastating blow at the worst possible time, when many plants were too early to harvest, but are now too late to replant in the region’s abbreviated growing season. Officials have called last week’s flooding Vermont’s worst natural disaster since floods in 1927.
The Most Essential Worker in a Heat Wave? The A.C. Guy (NYT) José Guerrero’s phone buzzes from morning to midnight with sweaty pleas for help: The air-conditioner fan just quit. My grandma is stuck in a 90-degree house. My children are overheating. Please come, it’s so hot. As Phoenix slogs through a record 21 straight days of 110-degree or higher temperatures, Mr. Guerrero, 33, has emerged as maybe the most essential worker in a town desperate to stay cool: the A.C. repair guy. Air-conditioner service companies around the Southwest are seeing voracious demand—a result of record-breaking temperatures searing the country from Florida to California, compounded by a shortage of skilled technicians and equipment. So now, Mr. Guerrero, his two brothers and their father roll out seven days a week, heading for suffocating attics and tar-shingled rooftops to coax ailing air-conditioners back to life. They fix leaking refrigerant lines, replace burned-out capacitors and try to lower Phoenix’s temperature a few degrees. But keeping the city cool is sweltering work. They endure the heat by guzzling water and wrapping wet cloths around their necks, and try to avoid burning their hands on scalding sheet metal or fainting inside crawl spaces where they say temperatures can soar to 150 degrees.
As a child, she sold street tamales; a senator now, she’s shaking up Mexico’s presidential race. (AP) A street-food salesgirl who became a tech entrepreneur and senator is shaking up the contest to succeed Mexico’s popular president and offering many voters the first real alternative to her country’s dominant party. Xóchitl Gálvez, 60, helped her family as a girl by selling tamales on the street. Today the straight-talking opposition senator is a long shot against Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party, which holds Congress and 22 of Mexico’s 32 states. Despite her slim chances, Gálvez seems to have shaken the president so badly that he’s been insulting her almost daily during his morning briefings. A political independent who initially set her sights on competing to be Mexico City mayor and often travels the sprawling capital on a bicycle, Gálvez entered the Senate chamber in December dressed as a dinosaur, an allusion to party leaders known for their archaic, unmovable practices. Mexican society is looking for someone new to believe in, Gálvez told The Associated Press.
Homicides in Brazil at the lowest level in over a decade, report says (AP) Brazilian researchers say the number of violent deaths last year reached the lowest level in more than a decade, puzzling some experts because there has been an explosion of firearms circulating in the country in recent years. About 47,500 people were slain in Latin America’s largest nation in 2022, said a report Thursday by the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety, an independent group that tracks crimes. While the number of killings in 2022 was down 2.4% from the previous year, it remained roughly even with levels recorded since 2019. The last time Brazil had less violent deaths was in 2011, with 47,215 killings.
Europe embraces the siesta to deal with the heat wave (NYT) A decade ago, in the wake of a financial crisis, Spain’s sacred siesta seemed to be under serious threat. Criticism was mounting across Europe that Spain’s sluggish economy resulted, in part, from its long midday break. Worried about being stereotyped as a sleepy, lazy country, Spain pledged to abolish the siesta to increase productivity. The siesta lived on, though rumors of its demise circulated. And now, as Europe has been gripped by more frequent and longer heat waves, other countries have come to see the wisdom of the siesta, including Germany, where a strong work ethic is valued sometimes to the point of mockery. German newspapers were among those sneering at the siesta during the economic crisis. But this summer, some German officials and work experts are extolling the virtues of a midday break. “Siesta during the heat is certainly not a bad suggestion,” said Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s health minister, reacting to calls this week from top German public health officials to imitate Spain, where many cities still see shops close and streets empty between 2 and 4 p.m. The heat—temperatures in Germany were around 90 degrees Fahrenheit this week—is forcing people to rethink their way of life and look to southern countries as examples of how to adapt to rising temperatures. Several research papers have found that napping improves productivity. The benefit of siesta has also been recognized for people’s health. Researchers at the University College of London showed in a study published last month that regular napping may help protect the brain’s health as it ages.
Wildfires in Greece burn for fifth day as another heatwave hits (Reuters) Greece struggled to contain a wildfire west of Athens that burnt forestland for a fifth day on Friday as another heatwave hit the country. Firefighters, backed by air water bombers and reinforcements from Cyprus, France, Israel and Italy, attempted to control the fire that broke out in the wider Athens area on Monday, gutting houses and forcing evacuations. More than 100 houses and businesses have been severely damaged from this wildfire and another near Athens that authorities put out earlier in the week.
Ukraine begins firing U.S.-provided cluster munitions at Russian forces (Washington Post) Ukraine has begun firing U.S.-provided cluster munitions against Russian forces in southeastern Ukraine in a push to break up well-fortified Russian positions that have slowed Ukraine’s summer offensive, according to Ukrainian officials familiar with the matter. The use of the controversial U.S.-made weapons, which has not been previously reported, follows President Biden’s “difficult decision” to order the delivery of the widely banned munitions last week, a move that human rights groups, European allies and some Democrats criticized due to the risk of civilian casualties. Russian President Vladimir Putin, referring to cluster munitions on Sunday, threatened to retaliate against Ukraine “if they are used against us,” although Russia has already used cluster munitions in populated areas of Ukraine at least 24 times since the start of Moscow’s invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, according to the United Nations. Cluster bombs, outlawed in more than 120 countries, explode in the air over a target, releasing dozens to hundreds of smaller bomblets across an area potentially as big as several football fields. Children are particularly vulnerable, as the submunitions can fail to explode until they’re picked up, potentially years after a conflict has ended.
Rich lode of EV metals could boost Taliban and its new Chinese partners (Washington Post) Sayed Wali Sajid spent years fighting American soldiers in the barren hills and fertile fields of the Pech River Valley, one of the deadliest theaters of the 20-year insurgency. But nothing confounded the Taliban commander, he said, like the new wave of foreigners who began showing up, one after another, in late 2021. “The Chinese were unbelievable,” Sajid said, chuckling at the memory. “At first, they didn’t tell us what they wanted. But then I saw the excitement in their eyes and their eagerness, and that’s when I understood the word ‘lithium.’” A decade earlier, the U.S. Defense Department, guided by the surveys of American government geologists, concluded that the vast wealth of lithium and other minerals buried in Afghanistan might be worth $1 trillion, more than enough to prop up the country’s fragile government. In a 2010 memo, the Pentagon’s Task Force for Business and Stability Operations dubbed the country the “Saudi Arabia of lithium.” A year later, the U.S. Geological Survey published a map showing the location of major deposits and highlighted the magnitude of the underground wealth, saying Afghanistan “could be considered as the world’s recognized future principal source of lithium.” Now, in a great twist of modern Afghan history, it is the Taliban—which overthrew the U.S.-backed government two years ago—that is finally looking to exploit those vast lithium reserves. And with the United States absent from Afghanistan, it is Chinese companies that are now aggressively positioning themselves to reap a windfall from lithium here.
Cambodian leader’s son, a West Point grad, set to take reins of power—but will he bring change? (AP) Hun Sen has been Cambodia’s autocratic prime minister for nearly four decades, during which the opposition has been stifled and the country has grown increasingly close to China. With his Cambodian People’s Party virtually guaranteed another landslide victory in this Sunday’s election, it’s hard to imagine dramatic change on the horizon. But the 70-year-old former communist Khmer Rouge fighter and Asia’s longest-serving leader says he is ready to hand the premiership to his oldest son, Hun Manet, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point who heads the country’s army. Hun Manet’s education includes bachelor’s at West Point being followed by a master’s at New York University and a doctorate in economics from Britain’s Bristol University. His background has given rise to hope from some in the West that he might bring political change, but it will still take work to regain influence in the Southeast Asian country of 16.5 million, given China’s strategic and economic importance.
Travis King disappeared into a North Korea more isolated than ever (Reuters) When U.S. soldier Travis King sprinted across the border into North Korea from the South this week, he disappeared into a North Korea where lingering COVID-19 concerns and restrictions have made the already secretive country more isolated than ever. During the pandemic North Korea stopped all international travel and most trade, built a lengthy border wall, and even shot some would-be unauthorised border crossers early in the outbreak. Its trade has slowly resumed and mask mandates appear to have been dropped, but analysts say Pyongyang is still keenly nervous about border crossings, authorised or not. King ran over the border on Tuesday and U.S. officials say they have yet to ascertain his fate. “North Koreans don’t want to interact with the outside world,” said Andrei Lankov, director of the Seoul-based Korea Risk Group, noting the only known case of foreigners being allowed into the country in the last three years was a new Chinese ambassador and other diplomats in March, after lengthy negotiations.
Heat Affects Older People More. Here’s How to Stay Safe. (NYT) Extreme heat can be deadly for anyone, but older adults are uniquely vulnerable. In the heat wave that suffocated Europe in the summer of 2022, people age 65 and older accounted for approximately 90 percent of heat-related deaths. Experts say that three factors combine to increase older adults’ risk: biological changes that occur naturally with age, higher rates of age-related chronic diseases and greater use of medications that can alter the body’s response to heat. As people age, they also stop feeling as thirsty and so they tend to drink less. In hot conditions, that can cause them to become dehydrated faster. People often think that heat needs to be extreme (say, over 100 degrees) to cause illness, but in older adults, signs of heat exhaustion can emerge when temperatures are as low as 80 degrees. Physical exertion increases a person’s risk for heat illness because the body starts to generate even more heat. On hot days, older adults and people with serious health conditions should limit outdoor activities like walking and gardening to the cooler mornings and evenings, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. Listen to your body, too: If the activity starts to feel harder than normal, that’s a signal to stop and find a place to cool down. Signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, a racing heart or feeling lethargic.

The Children on the Hill | Jennifer McMahon | Published 2022 | *SPOILERS*
A genre-defying novel, inspired by Mary Shelley’s masterpiece Frankestein, which brilliantly explores the eerie mysteries of childhood and the evils perpetrated by the monsters among us.
1978: at her renowned treatment center in picturesque Vermont, the brillaint psychistrist, Dr. Helen Hildreth, is acclaimed for her compassionate work with the mentally ill. But when she’s home with her cherished grandchildren, Vi and Eric, she’s just Gran - teaching them how to take care of their pets, preparing them home-cooked meals, providing them with care and attention and love.
Then one day Gran brings home a child to stay with the faily. Iris - silent, hollow-eyed, skittish, and feral - does not behave like a normal girl.
Still, Violet is thrilled to have a new playmate. She and Eric invite iris to join their Monster Club, where they catalogue all kinds of monsters and dream up ways to defeat them. Before long, Iris begins to come out of her shell. She and Vi and Eric do everything together: ride their bicycles, go to the drive-in, meet at their clubhouse in secret to hunt monsters. Because, as Vi explains, monsters are everywhere
2019: Lizzy Shelley, the host of the popular podcast Monsters Among Us, is traveling to Vermont, where a young girl has been abducted, and a monster sighting has the town in an uproar. She’s determined to hunt it down, because Lizzy knows better than anyone that monsters are real - and one of them is her very own sister.
The Children on the Hill takes us on a breathless journey to face the primal fears that lurk within us all.
In Children on the Hill, we’re given an in-depth look into the lives of three children: Eric and Violet Hildreth, the grandchildren of renowned doctor Helen Hildreth, and Irish Whose Last Name We Don’t Know. Violet and Eric came to live with their Gran after a car accident took the lives of their parents. With Gran’s busy schedule, they are home-schooled, left to their own devices in their learning, with the ability to research whatever they’d like based on the assignments she gives to them each evening.
At the beginning of the story, Violet, simply known as Vi, helps her brother rescue an injured baby rabbit, shot by the groundskeeper of the Inn, a psychiatric facility where they live in the Director’s Quarters on the property. Though Old Mac wants to put the animal out of its misery, and for eating the vegetables from the garden that patients have planted, Vi and Eric distract him long enough in order to save the rabbit, which Eric, a lover of animals, keeps in his bedroom along with several other animals.
Vi and Eric are, for all intents and purposes, normal children who live a strange childhood. One day, Gran brings home a girl roughly the same age as Vi, who is 13. Her name is Iris. While the Inn doesn’t treat children under the age of 18, Iris was, according to Gran, a special circumstance. When Iris comes to them, she is mute, though indicates that she knows what they’re saying. She often wears her clothes inside out, and wears a raggedy orange hat on her head. It isn’t until a mishap occurs that the hat comes off, and Vi sees the ugly and fresh scar on her head indicating that something terrible had happened to her. Iris opens up to Vi, trusting her and quickly begins speaking again. She has no recollection of who she is or where she came from and Vi is hellbent on finding out the information of her past, if not for her sake then Iris’s.
In the present, or 2019 at least, we see Lizzy Shelley. We assume that this person is Vi with a new name. Vi, Eric and Iris as children had a “monster club”, an obsession with hunting monsters and even writing a Book of Monsters. Lizzy, now a 51-year-old woman, has continued this obsession into her adult life. As a career, she hunts monsters for a living. She travels across the country searching for the folklore that she often hears so often about: stories of Big Foot, vampies, werewolves, and the like. Lizzy keeps in contact with Eric, who now goes by Charlie, and he lives with a wife and two children, though their relationship is strained due to Lizzy’s strange choice of career.
Lizzy gets an email from someone known as MNSTRGRL, sharing an article about a young 13 year old girl who has gone missing from Vermont. Since an incident occured several years ago, Lizzy has returned to Vermont ever. But, she feels compelled to now. Several girls, 4 to date, have gone missing after claiming to see a monster of some kind. In this instance, Lauren, the girl who has gone missing, claims to have seen Chickering Island’s very own Rattling Jane, and then shortly after disappeared.
Lizzy arrives in Vermont, feeling some sort of strange coming home event happening. She knows that it is HER monster, the one she’s been chasing for years, her sister. We assume that this person is Iris, the young mute girl who had come to live with Vi, Eric and Gran in the late 70s.
Lizzy meets some of the locals, and gather what they know on the folklore that is Rattling Jane. She begins investigating into the past of Lauren. According to some of her friends on the island, Lauren was a troubled girl, smoking cigarettes and weed, and often getting into arguments with her parents, and at this rate, they assume that she simply ran away from an abusive home and nothing bad had happened to her. Lizzy feels otherwise. She stays at a campground in her Ford Transit van that has been reequipped with various monster hunting tools.
Back in the 70s, Vi is doing everything she can to learn about Iris’s past. She hears of a strange wing inside of the Inn, something that has never been discussed in front of her or has even been seen, known as B West. The B stands for basement, where Vi learns it is found. In order to find out the information she needs on Iris’s past, she steals the key ring from her grandmother’s purse, and heads into the basement. She finds three separate rooms with various equipment, and Vi understands then that her grandmother is not who she claims to be. Gran claims to use holistic approaches to treat her patients, but the basement wing states otherwise with various electroshock equipment, hydrotherapy equipment and other strange items.
In the office, Vi finds a file on Patient S, assumed to be Iris. It is stated that Patient S is her greatest success. Patient S was a child of a family known as the Templeton’s, though their name had been changed for their protection. They are a long line of criminals, imbecils and the like. Iris was saved as she showed potential to Gran that she was different than the others in her family and that she could be saved. She was brought to the Inn to have experiments performed on her, experiments that she took too well enough to brought out of the basement and to live with Vi and Eric.
Vi, who promised Iris she’d find out the truth, eventually shows her the file she saved and for an hour, Iris reads the information about her. Inside, she learns that her parents and an older sister, were murdered, by her hand after she set a fire in which they died. Iris does not take to this information lightly, and Vi helps her overcome, though Iris begins regressing a bit after she reads the file.
But, together, they determine that they need to find out the rest of the information. Vi makes copies of the keys she needs and intends to go back into the basement, and Iris says she wants to come. The two of them return, and Iris has recollections of being in the basement. They return to the office and read through more files, and it is here that we learn that it is was not Iris that was Patient S, but it is Vi. Vi was taken from the Templeton family after she had killed her parents, had the experiments performed on her, essentially was killed and then brought back to life. The experiments served as a way to erase her memory, and she then came back with recollections of a life she had actually never lived. Eric isn’t her real brother, but was told as such in order to keep her from learning the truth. Eric confesses as much to Vi.
Vi absolutely loses it, and injures Iris and sets the building on fire, killing Dr. Hildreth in the process. Though Vi is coming down from her adrenaline rush, she knows that she must escape otherwise more terrible things will happen to her. She does so, going missing without a trace until 2019 when Iris, now Lizzy, actually finds her.
Lizzy and Skink, a local fan boy of hers, go back to the Inn. Though much of the property is in disarray, the Inn is still intact. They enter the basement where they find Vi and Lauren in the middle of a haircut. Lizzy has Skink take Lauren from the room so she and Vi can talk. Vi shows her that she isn’t a monster of the kind that Lizzy has been hunting for years. She shows her photos of the missing girls, both at the time they went missing and in the present. She shares that she has helped the girls out of abusive situations, given them new life and essentially new identities in order for them to have a new life, a new beginning. She is funded by many people, she shares, and that she wants to continue this purpose and that Lizzy should stop hunting her, and that she’ll know it’s her when the time comes.
A little bit in the future, Lizzy and Skink still keep in touch, and she is in the Wisconsin woods searching for a Wendigo that was reported to be in the area. Skink shares that the police found evidence that Lauren was really being abused, and that she was planning to come forward with it all and now the police believe that her father had done something to her as he went missing without a trace himself. But, what was concerning to Skink is that the father went missing the day BEFORE the diary had been found, leaving everything behind. He requests that Lizzy reach out to Vi by email, because they know that it involves her somehow.
We go back to Vi’s perspective, where she and Lauren have her father tied up. Vi explains that Lauren’s transformation into a monster is complete, showing that what she told Lizzy was a lie, and that she was helping these girls murder the people who have wronged them before actually going back into the real world with their new identities.
This book had me hooked from the second part of the book on. The beginning was a bit boring, and fillers were used quite a bit along with a lot of repetition, such as the fact that Lizzy carried a .38 Special Smith and Wesson gun. When authors do this, it’s almost like they think we forgot what kind of gun we carry.
However, the book was great, and a definite psychological thriller more so than a supernatural thriller. There wasn’t anything supernatural about the book whatsoever except for the fact that Lizzy was a professional monster hunter, though she never actually saw any monsters except for her own sister.
4/5 Stars.

About my “Adan’s Images” Series
I’ve struggled for quite awhile to come up with a means or routine that’d let me present my work, especially all the photos and paintings I’ve uploaded @FineArtAmerica (FAA) since early 2016.
We’ll see how this works out, lol 😊
Starting with my oldest work I’d uploaded onto FAA, I‘ll be progressing through each…

What is motorbike insurance?
A bike insurance policy is a contract between the insurer and the bike owner. The insurance company provides financial coverage to your bike against any loss or damage due to an accident.
How are motorbike insured?
Bikes are usually insured under the personal property section. Your homeowners insurance can cover problems related to the bike, such as theft or sabotage. But if you don't own a home, you can get coverage elsewhere, such as renters insurance. If your bike is stolen or vandalized, you are covered under your homeowners insurance, or renters insurance. Your bike is damaged in a car accident, another driver collides with your bike, or your bike is destroyed in a house fire. In such a case your landlord or renters insurance policy will cover the extent of your policy. If you accidentally hit someone and get injured, their medical expenses may be covered under the liability portion of your home, condo or renters insurance policy. If you hit someone else's property and get damaged like denting a car. In such case you liability portion of your homeowners insurance will cover the damage. You can also look for separate bike insurance policies for around $100 to $300 per year. September 1 2021 Newport Vermont
On our last day in Newport on our Sisters’ Retreat we continued exploring the roots of our past in this lovely little community. We found an entrance to the walking and bike trail which goes to Canada called the Beebe Spur Rail Trail, . also known as the Newport--Beebe Bike Path because a very kind man allowed us to park in his yard and walk from there. According to its website:
“The Beebe Spur Rail Trail makes a level run along the eastern shore of Lake Memphremagog to Vermont’s border with Canada. At less than 4 miles, the distance isn’t taxing, although the gravel surface can make for a challenging bicycle ride without wide tires. At the north end, travelers who want to cross into Canada need to take a 1.5-mile detour and carry a passport.
The trail’s name is derived from the historic community of Beebe Plain, which straddles the US–Canada border; a mid-19th-century post office served both countries from opposite ends of the building. The town served as a railroad connection between a branch of the Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad, completed in 1867 and Canada’s Massawippi Valley Railway, built in 1870. The Quebec Central Railway took control of the line in 1926. A subsequent owner, Canadian Pacific Railway, discontinued use on the line in 1990 and removed the tracks in 1992.The Beebe Spur Rail Trail follows that old Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad line from Newport to the border, while the 19-kilometer (11.8-mile) Sentier Nature Tomifobia uses the Massawippi Valley Railway corridor in Canada.”
After the walk we drove to one of the highest points in Newport on Shattuck Hill Road for a great view of the lake. We found a beautiful old farmhouse which was for sale and fantasized about buying it to create a women’s retreat and avoid it being broken into parcels and sold for houses, which would benefit only a few wealthy families. But, unfortunately, we don’t have the money or time, at least now, for such an endeavor. It was fun, though, imagining doing something so ambitious together.
We went back into the center of town to buy sandwiches at the natural foods store and then we drove out to find the farm where our family lived before we left Newport to move to Massachusetts when I was five. We had visited it before so we used the memories of that search to find the farm out on Vance Hill Road in a part of Newport called “Strawberry Acres”.
Trust me, the farm didn’t look like this when we lived here. The most recent owners put a lot of money into a major remodel and it is probably worth a LOT of money now, especially given the views of the lake.
We ate our sandwiches on a knoll above the house and marveled at the beauty of our home town. We felt so blessed to have had this opportunity to take this trip together and to enjoy each others’ company without the distraction of work and other responsibilities. We’ll always remember the fun we had together, just the three of us.

CELTIC MUSIC STORY
A few weeks back, I was reading Lissa Schneckenburger’s email. Lissa is a fantastic Celtic musician from Vermont. She has a great newsletter where she inspires you to practice. In one email, she was talking about Summer Road Trips. She mentioned the Sustainable Touring Arts Coalition on how to make your travel as sustainable as possible. Her friend Laura Cortese toured plastic free. And Lissa did a tour with her husband and son on a bicycle!
I’ll let her tell the story
Lissa Schneckenburger “The 11th Labor of Hercules” from Thunder in My Arms
I found Lissa’s story extremely inspiring. Obviously, I’m concerned about our carbon impact on the climate which is why I mentioned the Carbon Almanac in a past podcast. Her story got me excited. I went down a rabbit hole looking into sustainability in the music industry. I found a few resources, but not much. So I’ve been looking into ways that I can make my music career and podcasting career more sustainable.
One of the coolest things that Lissa Schneckenburger’s story inspired me to do is to make my own bike gig plans. With any luck, I will announce at least one bike show this Fall.
I’d love your thoughts and feedback. Have you seen any Celtic musicians working hard to support our environment? What did they do? Please email me.
Old Man Flanagan's Ghost “May” from Sociable
Harmundi “Farewell To Thom” from Um Orvalho Boreal
Jamison Celtic Rock “The Most Irish Girl in America” from Heyhowrya
CLOSING
Niamh Parsons “Green Grass It Grows Bonny” from In My Prime

There are over 300 amazingly generous people who pledge $1, $5, $10, $25 or more each and every week to support the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I am super grateful to each for their generosity. But sometimes, I screw up. I forget to charge for an episode.
That happened this week. The money came in from last month’s Patreon pledges. I was $500 short what I normally get each month. As you might imagine, I was a bit shocked. I realized immediately that I didn’t charge for one of the episodes last month. That shortfall has a big impact on my life and business.
I emailed my patrons and let them know about the problem. I was flooded with small donations and large ones from people who wanted to help make up that shortfall.
So I want to take a moment to thank each and every Patron of the Podcast who sent in money to help me meet my financial goals for this month. I have a lot of new artist music I am buying this month. So that helps immensely.
If you want to support the podcast with a one-off contribution, I will put a link in the shownotes to where you can donate OR even buy some Celtic podcast t-shirts or other merch.
Again, thank you so much for supporting the show!

Avenue south residence price list
Well, after a more than filling dinner at La Iguana and a brief excursion to Montreal's Jazz Festival last night it was time to burn some calories and an official biking tour through the city would help me keep the certain weight gain from the delicious Montreal food at least somewhat under control. My biking tour was scheduled to start around 8:30 am, but on this gorgeous day, Canada Day no less, our national holiday, I got going early.
Bright and bushy tailed I walked out of the hotel by 7 am and strolled over into Old Montreal. Jacques Cartier Square at 7 am was pretty much deserted with just a few people opening up cafés and Avenue south residences condo street vendors starting to open their stalls. Further south the sun was reflecting off the silver dome of the Marché Bonsecours I noticed that runners dressed up in red t-shirts with the slogans "Run for Canada" and "Great Things For Canada" were congregating in the port area at Quai Jacques Cartier.
Upon further investigation I found out that all these athletes were raising funds for Canada's Olympic teams for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as part of a charity event organized by HBC. I asked some of the participants and found out that the race was officially going to start at 8 am. Since I had about a half an hour, I decided to explore the area around Quai Jacques Cartier and I walked eastwards out to Quai de l'Horloge (literally translated "Clock Pier"). I strolled out on this stretch of land until I reached a clock tower, the "Tour de l'Horloge", which is an offwhite structure that was built in 1992 to commemorate merchant marine sailors who had lost their lives during the First World War. The Jacques Cartier Bridge can be clearly seen in the background.
After my initial investigation it was getting closer to race time. Now there was a whole animation team that was exhorting the runners to do calistenics to warm up for the big race. Several fitness experts on a podium were doing countdowns to the music ("a-one, a-two, a-three" - all of that in French, of course) while the members of the crowd were enthusiastically raising their arms and legs, pumping fists and doing all sorts of other warm-up exercises to get prepared for the start. Then, just a few minutes before 8 am, all the runners lined up in an area fenced in by a white picket fence and just a few moments after the official countdown began. Punctually at 8 am the gate was opened and the runners started running for Canada, to raise funds for Canada's Olympic teams.
Well, watching all this exercise made me look forward to my own activity-rich schedule, starting off with a bicycle tour in the morning. I walked about 10 minutes eastwards to Ça Roule, a bicycle rental and repair shop at 27 rue de la Commune that is a prime access point for travelers who want to discover Montreal by bicycle. You can rent bikes by the hour or by the day, and Ça Roule (also known as "Montreal on Wheels") even offers guided tours. And that's what I was going to take today: a guided tour accompanied by a licensed tour guide from Guidatour.
First I went in the store to get outfitted, I got my bike (a very comfortable touring bike, I might add), a helmet, a detailed bicycle map of Montreal and a free bottle of water. Our tour group was congregating outside, we had a couple from Vermont, a young man from New York City, and a local gentleman who lives on the South Shore across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal who were going to take the tour with our licensed guide, Bruno.
First Bruno took is into the port area to Quai King-Edward where we cycled out all the way to the tip from where we had a great view of the skyline of Old Montreal. From there we went eastwards to Place Jacques Cartier and pushed our bikes up the gently sloping square. Once at the top, right in front of Montreal City Hall, we got back on our bikes and went east to rue Berri where we were impressed by the Gare Viger, a former railway station built in the typical Chateau style that was so popular during Canada's early railway era. Bruno indicated that this building will probably be renovated in the next two years and turned into an upscale hotel.
Rue Berri is a major north-south thoroughfare in Montreal and what's great about it is that it has designated bicycling lanes that are completely separated from the road traffic. We cycled past UQAM (Université de Quebec à Montréal), Bruno's alma mater, and puffed up a couple of gently sloping yet longish hills. We had officially reached the Plateau Mont-Royal area. At the top, just north of Sherbrooke Street, we cycled into the Parc Lafontaine, the main green space in the Plateau area. The park was laid out in 1908, features two man-made lakes, tennis courts and bowling greens. Bruno mentioned to us that in the winter the waterways turn into a beautifully illuminated skating area. We stopped for a few minutes in the serene surroundings of the park. At the north end there was a map of Montreal's extensive cycling network, right across from the "Maison des Cyclistes" which caters to bicycling enthusiasts.
