Ship’s Cats
Ship cat (also board cat ; male form: ship cat, board tomcat) is the term for a domestic cat that travels on a ship or barge, decimating pests such as rats and mice in the storage room and galley and/or serving as a mascot to entertain and distract the crew.
Until about the 1970s, ship cats were still frequently found on warships and merchant ships. Today the captain decides whether the presence of a ship cat on his ship is desired and can be tolerated.
In connection with particularly well-known ships, persons or events of history, ship cats were mentioned or depicted in writing and thus gained fame.
These animals were not only brought on board for pest control or entertainment. They were even awarded mygical abilities, here are a few examples:
A cat on board was considered a good luck charm and was therefore "as holy as the bull in Egypt". John Locke reports of an event in which a ship's cat fell into the sea and a boat with half a dozen men was abandoned to save her while the ship was stopping on its way. Locke also suspected that less fuss had been made over a crew member who had gone overboard.
This may have to do with the superstition that a ship's cat that has gone overboard and has not been rescued is capable of causing a storm that would harm the ship and the careless crew.
Likewise, deliberate maltreatment of the ship's cat would lead to misfortune for the crew.
Also the ways of the cat were attached importance: If she moved towards a sailor, she "brought" him happiness; if she moved away from him, she took happiness with her again; if she crossed his path and moved away from him, he was probably doomed.
In the Royal Navy, a black cat on board was considered a good luck charm; two black cats, on the other hand, brought bad luck. Sometimes the fishermen's wives would also keep black cats at home in the hope that they could use their influence to protect their husbands at sea.
It is said from Wales that there are storms when a ship's cat stretches and stretches so that its front paws touch each other before the ship reaches Lundy coming out of the Bristol Channel. Other beliefs included, if a cat licked its fur against the grain, it meant a hail storm was coming; if it sneezed it meant rain; and if it was frisky it meant wind.
Due to circulated stories, a ship cat that voluntarily left her ship seemed to mean the imminent sinking of this ship.
For reasons of hygiene and rabies prevention the Royal Navy banned ship cats from the ships of their navy in 1975 - other countries followed this example and thus ended a century-long tradition.
