I’m not entirely sure which trail I was on, but I did enjoy the hike. I started at the Deukmejian Wilderness Park parking lot and walked till I saw the sign for the Lemesnager Loop Trail and Rim of the Valley Trail, slightly past McFall Oak.

The trail starts out as a narrow dirt path with loose rocks. It gradually goes up the mountain but it’s not that steep. Twenty minutes into the hike, I came across a stream. I wasn’t sure where to go but followed the stream and eventually found a staircase.

Le Mesnager is supposedly a 3.4 mile loop trail but parts are overgrown and washed out. The signs are also not clear. I didn’t run into anyone once I was on the trail.

The trail was clean and had nice views of LA/Glendale. I heard birds and saw quite a few rabbits. The vegetation is mostly shrubs with some oak trees.

I reached a post which seemed to be at the summit and then the trail downhill was wider and had more bike tire tracks. It seemed to be a fire road. Once I got to the end, I was not where I started but in a nice neighborhood 2.5 miles from where I started. The trail signs do not indicate how long the trails are.

I didn’t make it back to my car by 6 PM and got locked out. I called the Parks Department and didn’t hear from anyone till the next day. They were very nice though. I found out that a staff person lives in the park in a mobile home, so I could have asked that person for help or called the police. The signs did not have any information about what to do if the gate is locked and you’re locked in. The answering machine message also did not provide any information about what to do if you’re locked in.

Anyone who's lived there knows that the brush is everywhere in the midst of the city, entangled within the public and private infrastructure, and at times of drought it is tinder dry, and during times of rain, it grows fast and thick; the golden hills turn as green as the hills of Hawaii, and after a time, the yearly Santa Ana winds return from the hot desert in the east, they dry out again, poised to burn. That is the natural cycle. In a mere 120 years or so, Los Angeles has grown from a hopeful population of 100,000 to the present megalopolis home to 13,000,000 people. When you consider the countless ways in which fire can be ignited just by accident alone, you would wonder how the city hasn't suffered such devastation as it is experiencing now, every year. A careless cigarette butt tossed from a car in Laurel Canyon. A disgarded glass bottle magnifying the blistering sunlight under a bush on Mulholland Drive. An electrical transformer failure on a power pole in the hills above Malibu. A homeless person cooking in a tent encampment in the Verdugo Hills. It is also by natural design that the indigenous foliage of the hills and mountains constantly repeat a cycle of growth and burning. It's a known fact that this cycle has occured for tens of thousands of years. Lightning strikes, the mountains burn, the rain comes, and the greenery returns. Now consider the endless opportunities for someone to deliberately set fires and the possible reasons why fires would be started. As it has been said, "some people just want to see the world burn". But some people may have other motivations such as the guy who's in financial trouble and burns his home or business down to collect the insurance money if he's covered for fire. The drug addicts and the mentally deranged. The stupid kids fooling around in the hills behind their homes. And even for the most wicked and evil political and ideological agendas to create shocking change through catastrophic destruction. May it be for financial gain and seizing power and stealing land by forcing people out, or pushing narratives like Climate-Change by creating fear within the masses. You don't need lasers fired from satellites or aircraft to start wildfires when the expected winds return on schedule; although you certainly could. But the fact is that although brush fires in Los Angeles occur all of the time for many of the aforementioned reasons, they have never before gone so completely beyond and out of control, when mathematically speaking, they should go out of control all the time regardless of the competency and preparedness of those charged with mitigating, preventing, and responding to these fires. Only the grace of God has contained such utter devastation up until now. There is no other explanation. The message cannot be more clear. The further we depart from God, the further His grace will depart from us. I pray that this horrific tragedy opens the eyes of many who were blind. If not, expect more of the same and worse. Cold is the absence of heat. Despair is the absence of God.

May the Lord's mercy be with us who call out to Him, and may His patience for those who remain blind be sustained so they yet may see.

Farewell to a trailblazer. 💔 Early this morning, subadult male mountain lion P-90 was struck and killed by a vehicle on State Highway 33 in Oak View, just south of Ojai in Ventura County. After they were notified, he was picked up by biologists from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Born in the central Santa Monica Mountains, he was one of 13 kittens born during the "Summer of Kittens" in 2020, which included five mountain lion mothers giving birth in our study area. P-90 was first captured and marked at the den on July 6, 2020, when he was about three weeks of age. P-90's father is suspected to be P-63. His sibling, male P-89, was killed by a vehicle on the 101 Freeway on July 18, 2022. P-90 had successfully crossed the 101 Freeway in Camarillo this past June. He crossed flat agricultural fields and eventually traveled to the Lake Casitas area in Los Padres National Forest. This was actually his third time successfully crossing the 101 Freeway. Soon after dispersing from his mother, P65, he crossed the 101 at Liberty Canyon, heading north into the Simi Hills on December 11, 2021. The next night he crossed the 101 again, heading back into the Santa Monica Mountains. P-90 was just over two years old. He is the 7th lion in our study area to die from road mortality this year alone and the 5th radio-collared one. During the 20-year study, 32 mountain lions were killed by a vehicle in our study area, which includes the Santa Monica Mountains, Simi Hills, Santa Susana Mountains, Verdugo Mountains, and Griffith Park. Biologists are currently tracking 11 mountain lions in the region with GPS radio collars. Samples were collected from P-90 after he was killed Friday morning. A necropsy will be conducted. Glendale, CA Sends Bogus Evacuation Warning

Waking up to an evacuation warning is definitely not the best way to start your weekend morning. Residents of Chevy Chase Canyon were rattled 9 am last Saturday for a warning to evacuate immediately at Glendale Community College. The alert was then followed by another message that it was just a drill. Residents were definitely annoyed with the lack of planning and prior announcement to the community. The following Monday, Glendale city officials issued an apology blaming a computer glitch for the bogus evacuation warning. If you are one of the affected residents, the unnecessary stress has been done. We just hope that authorities ensure that this will not happen again.
