posted abt this before but i LOVE trains that can have cars on them and boats that can have cars on them. i think a significant part of the appeal is that i love it when cars are inside (you COULD have a car on the surface of the vehicles but you usually dont. they are usually in its tummy :3). i like to see the car in the mall and think about how maybe they just drove it in.
Once boarded, drivers and passengers can exit their vehicles to walk around or use the toilets, but there are currently no onboard services. Toilets are provided in every third carriage in the double-deck section and in the loading carriages in the single-deck section. Passengers are advised not to walk between the vehicles in areas that are not designated crossing areas, because the gradients in the tunnel (16 km (9.9 mi) of continuous slope at 1.1% on the English side)[3] mean there is a dangerous possibility that vehicles could roll back and/or forward if the drivers forget to turn on the parking brake.
i love that theres no place for the passengers to like. sit. its just a car chamber. sit in your car or stand in the weird moving car tunnel. inexplicably immensely charming to me

Understanding Common Porsche Sensor Problems: Reliable Fixes and Service Tips for Enhanced Vehicle Performance
Porsche vehicles are known for their precision engineering, dynamic performance, and cutting-edge technology. However, like all modern cars, they rely heavily on a variety of sensors to ensure smooth operation and optimal performance. These sensors monitor everything from engine performance and fuel efficiency to safety systems and emissions. When a sensor fails or malfunctions, it can cause performance issues, inaccurate readings, or even damage to critical vehicle components. In this article, we’ll explore common Porsche sensor problems, their potential causes, and reliable fixes to keep your vehicle performing at its best.
Common Porsche Sensor Problems
Oxygen (O2) Sensor Failure The oxygen sensor monitors the air-to-fuel ratio in your Porsche’s engine and helps optimize fuel efficiency and emissions control. When the O2 sensor malfunctions, you may notice poor fuel economy, a rough idle, or an illuminated check engine light. Over time, an inaccurate O2 sensor can also lead to more serious engine problems due to incorrect fuel mixture readings.
Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Issues The MAF sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine to help adjust fuel delivery. If the MAF sensor becomes dirty or faulty, it can result in stalling, poor acceleration, or engine hesitation. This issue is especially common in high-performance vehicles like Porsche, where precise air and fuel management is crucial.
Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Malfunction The throttle position sensor helps manage the position of the throttle valve in relation to the accelerator pedal. If the TPS fails, you may experience inconsistent throttle response, sluggish acceleration, or difficulty maintaining a steady speed. In extreme cases, the vehicle may enter "limp mode," restricting performance to prevent further damage.
Knock Sensor Problems The knock sensor detects engine knocking or pinging, which occurs when fuel ignites prematurely in the combustion chamber. If the knock sensor fails, the engine may not adjust its timing properly, leading to potential damage. A malfunctioning knock sensor often triggers the check engine light and may cause rough engine operation or reduced performance.
ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Failure The ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) wheel speed sensors monitor the rotation of each wheel to prevent lockups during braking. When an ABS sensor fails, you might experience reduced braking performance, and the ABS light may illuminate on the dashboard. A faulty sensor can compromise vehicle safety, especially in adverse driving conditions.
Reliable Fixes for Porsche Sensor Problems
Regular Diagnostic Checks Conducting regular diagnostic scans is one of the most effective ways to identify sensor issues early. Porsche vehicles are equipped with sophisticated onboard diagnostic systems that store error codes when a sensor malfunctions. Regular scans by a professional technician can pinpoint the specific sensor at fault and allow for timely repairs or replacements.
Cleaning or Replacing Sensors Some sensor issues, such as those affecting the MAF sensor, may be resolved with a thorough cleaning. Over time, dirt, dust, and debris can accumulate on the sensor, leading to inaccurate readings. A professional cleaning can restore sensor functionality. However, if the sensor is damaged or worn out, replacement is often the best option to restore proper performance.
Updating Software and Calibration Many sensor-related problems can be linked to outdated software or improper calibration. Porsche vehicles often receive software updates that improve sensor accuracy and vehicle performance. Regularly updating your Porsche’s software and ensuring all sensors are properly calibrated by a professional technician can prevent issues from arising and optimize your vehicle’s systems.
Using OEM Parts for Sensor Replacement When replacing faulty sensors, it’s essential to use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. OEM sensors are specifically designed for your Porsche model and ensure precise compatibility and performance. Using aftermarket or generic parts may lead to inaccurate readings or further malfunctions.
Professional Inspection and Repairs Sensor problems can sometimes be complex, involving more than just the sensor itself. Issues with wiring, connectors, or even the vehicle’s control modules can affect sensor performance. A professional mechanic with expertise in Porsche vehicles can perform a comprehensive inspection to diagnose and resolve the root cause of sensor failures.
Service Tips for Enhanced Porsche Performance
Stay on Top of Maintenance: Regular maintenance services, such as oil changes, air filter replacements, and fuel system cleaning, can help prevent sensor issues caused by contamination or wear.
Keep Sensors Clean: Sensors located in the engine bay, like the MAF sensor, are susceptible to dirt and debris. Regular cleaning during maintenance checks can extend their lifespan and maintain performance.
Monitor Dashboard Alerts: If your check engine light or ABS warning light comes on, don’t ignore it. Early detection and repair of sensor issues can prevent more significant problems down the road.
Avoid Aftermarket Modifications: While aftermarket parts or modifications may seem appealing, they can interfere with the delicate balance of your Porsche’s sensor systems, leading to poor performance or damage.
Conclusion
Understanding the role that sensors play in your Porsche’s performance is essential for maintaining its reliability and driving experience. By addressing sensor problems early, using OEM parts, and relying on professional service, you can ensure that your Porsche continues to deliver the dynamic performance it’s known for. Regular diagnostics and proactive maintenance are key to preventing costly repairs and keeping your vehicle in peak condition.

“Heavy-duty truck to be the largest market for air brake systems”
Heavy-duty trucks include class 7 and class 8 trucks in which class 7 weighing approximately 12 to 14 tons, whereas class 8 trucks weighing upto approximately 15 t0 36 tons. According to OICA and MarketsandMarkets analysis, the production of heavy-duty trucks accounted for the maximum of the total truck production for all the regions, including North America, Asia Pacific, Rest of the World, and Europe in 2022 and is expected to dominate during the forecast period. Asia Pacific is the largest market for heavy duty trucks which contributes around ~59% of total heavy duty production at global level. Further, at global level production of heavy duty trucks is around 40% of total commercial vehicle production. Most heavy trucks have air brake systems due to their high load-carrying capacity. The main distinction between the air brake systems for rigid trucks and heavy-duty trucks lies in their load-carrying capacity and number of components. Fleet operators favor heavy-duty trucks for their strong weight-bearing capacity and engine power. The increasing development of economies in Asia and other regions is expected to drive the demand for heavy-duty trucks in the future. As a result, the heavy-duty truck segment is projected to be the largest market for air brake systems in terms of vehicle type.
“Brake chamber is estimated to hold the largest market share in the on-highway air brake system during the forecast period.”
Brake chambers hold the largest market share in global air brake systems for on-highway vehicles. Air brake chambers are metallic containers situated at each wheel, which, when forced by compressed air, convert into mechanical force to stop the commercial vehicle. There are two kinds of air brake chambers, namely, service and spring brake chambers. A service brake chamber contains a flexible rubber disc called a diaphragm, a pushrod metal rod, and a return spring. When the brake pedal is pressed, compressed air fills the service brake chamber causing the brakes to apply.
As the brake chamber is placed at the end of the wheel, the number of axles decides the number of brake chambers in each commercial vehicle. Each axle has two brake chambers in a vehicle. Hence, the number of brake chambers increases with the GVWR of the commercial vehicle. The number of brake chambers in each vehicle may vary with each region, as the average number of axles in each region is different for heavy-duty vehicles and buses. North America and Europe have more multi-axle heavy trucks than Asia Oceania. Hence, the average number of brake chambers in buses in India is four, while in European countries, it is six. Asia Pacific holds the largest market share in the brake chamber market. The demand for brake chambers is related to the number of multi-axle commercial vehicles, as each axle requires two brake chambers. Further, growing commercial vehicle production will also drive the demand for the brake chamber market.
“Europe accounted for the second largest global air brake system market.”
Europe is estimated to be the second-largest market for air brake systems after Asia Pacific. Countries such as France, Germany, UK, and Spain have a higher production of commercial vehicles. The growth of air brake systems in Europe can be attributed to factors such as the growing production of heavy-duty trucks and stringent government regulations related to active safety. As per ACEB, road freight transport is a crucial way of trade and commerce in the European region. Trucks are responsible for >70% of freight transportation over the land in this region. As maximum transportation is conducted through these heavy trucks, it leads to fatal accidents in this region. According to European Union, out of total road fatalities in the EU in 2019, 14% and 2% died due to heavy good vehicle and bus crashes, respectively. Thus, the European Commission has implemented various braking system regulations for heavy commercial vehicles to avoid fatalities from heavy commercial vehicle crashes. For instance, European union mandates to install rollover stability control system in heavy trucks weighing above 3.5 tons.
Further, the inclusion of additional safety-related components to withstand the government braking-related mandates makes the price of the air brake system comparatively higher in Europe than in Asia-Oceania and North America. Additionally, Europe’s disc brake installation rate is the highest due to the shortest stopping braking distance for commercial vehicles. The above factors imply European commercial vehicles’ importance and safety standards. Thus, rising commercial vehicle production and adopting advanced technologies related to air brake systems by OEMs is anticipated to drive the growth of air brake systems in Europe.
Key Market Players
The air brake system market is primarily dominated by globally established players such as Knorr- Bremse AG (Germany),Meritor, Inc. (US), Haldex (Sweden), ZF Friedrichshafen AG (Germany), and Wabtec Corporation (US). These companies consistently develop new products, adopt expansion strategies, and undertake collaborations, partnerships, and mergers & acquisitions to gain traction across different regions in this air brake system market.

A brief appreciation post for this stately lad before they’re off again; this is my 1975 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II. It’s a right-hand drive import from England and has been living the bulk of its life here in the USA.
The car was brought over in 1986 and had considerable refinishing and refurbishment work done at approximately 42,000 miles, including refinishing on the paint, undercarriage, engine/transmission/brakes/suspension, trim, and other major areas.
It has seen at least a couple mechanical overhauls in the past few years, but with much of its life being spent sitting in a collection, it’s feeling the ill effects of deterioration.
It recently began emitting blue smoke - a telltale sign of oil seeping into the combustion chambers and burning off while running and driving. The carburetors are well-tuned and jetted appropriately, it starts nearly immediately on cold cranks, and it runs smoothly and confidently, but it’s very possible valve seals may have started to go, resulting in this oil burn.
Though the oil level on the dipstick remains steady, the oil burn on cold start was enough to smoke out a garage and driveway when the temperature dropped to 14°C, and only really cleared up after reaching operating temperature 20-30 minutes later - not a good sign. There is a slight rap in the engine after multiple runs with a burn at startup, so there is definitely cause for worry where oiling and lubrication are concerned.
The primary braking circuit - a complex hydraulic/mineral oil dual-circuit system from Citroën - appears to be in some state of slow failure. The braking reservoirs share an additional circuit with the self-leveling suspension (as was common in Citroën luxury cars of the era), and we’re attempting to trace the root cause of the failure to determine if brakes or suspension are the culprit.
Typically, the suspensions aren’t the biggest concern. More often, it’s the dual-circuit brakes that require fairly constant maintenance. And, after running the brake pressure and accumulator test, there is a definite possibility that the system will need an overhaul in the coming couple years. The good news is that there have been recent maintenance indicators of the accumulators being replaced and/or serviced in the past year, so this may be down to hoses and lines and seals.
For Rolls-Royce to take care of maintenance like this, it would not be unreasonable to expect ~$6,900 on brake services, and perhaps and additional ~$8,500 on engine work and labor, so it’s definitely not an easy feat.
Beyond those hiccups, however, it’s a nicely sorted example, with all of the major components still being in a fully functional state. It has a lovely record of all history and maintenance tracing back to its original owner, and has been beautifully preserved as part of a collection of 75+ cars for some time. This sat alongside multiple Rolls, Bentley, Jaguar, Packard, Cord, Alfa, and other stunning vehicles.
The unfortunate reality is that these cars - as counterintuitive as it may seem - absolutely beg to be driven. They really do their absolute best when they’re soaking up the roads and racking up the miles. A well-sorted Rolls-Royce or Bentley from this time with well over 100,000 or 200,000 miles may very well be a smarter buy than lower mileage examples like these, that have only done an average of 1,500 to 1,700 miles/yr over the last 49 years.
But, for everything they’re worth, they are absolutely brilliant to drive, incredible to experience, and lovely to live with. They’re safer than most classics, and they’re operationally very similar to many modern cars, with plenty of amenities from then that are universal now. Of course, they still ride better than most other cars on the road, and they do an excellent job of isolating occupants from the outside, so there are still certainly some perks to driving these aging beasts.
I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there really is an allure to retro, vintage, and antique automotive design, especially with a vehicle like this. Though it’s 6 3/4L V8 may only make 189 HP, this vehicle surges with the force of an unladen ocean liner, wafting down the road with authority and poise, and striking an imposing image in the rear view of all passerby.
There is a mystique to these carriages of the gentry from bygone eras of wealth and opulence long forgotten, and there is this indelible sense of occasion when behind the wheel or while being driven.
While this yacht of sorts really does have its acquired tastes, I hope you can appreciate its preservation and charm as much as I do! Take care!
