Sarnath
Tumblr media
Sarnath, about 10km from Varanasi, is one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage centres in India. If you’re making a trip to Varanasi, be sure to include this little place of utmost significance in your itinerary. It is believed that after the attainment of enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, it was here that Lord Buddha preached his first ever sermon.
The whole of Sarnath has stories to tell and interesting architecture to explore. The great Dhamek Stupa, especially, is testimony to the importance it bears even today; it holds a special significance for devout Buddhists as it marks the ‘seat of the holy Buddha’ as he proclaimed his faith. Then there’s the Chaukhandi Stupa where, during his first visit to Sarnath, Lord Buddha met his five disciples.
The area is a treasure trove of other archaeological findings as well such as Dharmarajika Stupa and Mulgandha Kuti Vihar. Don’t miss the Lion Capital of Ashoka kept at the Sarnath Museum – the smooth glistening sculpture established by Emperor Ashoka in 250 B.C. It marked the foundation of the Buddhist Sangha, and was later adopted as the National Emblem of India.
Since Sarnath is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhist and Jain monks, you will encounter many of them when you visit the temples and monasteries there. Capturing something like that would be an absolute bliss for photo enthusiasts. Though very close to Varanasi, Sarnath is relatively less crowded and instills a certain kind of peace in you. The best way to reach Sarnath is to take a flight to Varanasi and then take a taxi from there to Sarnath. Since Sarnath is a holy city, being mindful and maintaining a certain decorum is important so that you do not hurt any religious sentiments.

Baba Baidyanath Temple, Deoghar, Jharkhand
Tumblr media
Shri Vaidyanath sanctuary, a Hindu sanctuary is one of 12 Jyothirlinga sanctuaries and furthermore one among 51 Shakti Peetha, where 'yoni peetha' of the Jyotirlinga itself is considered as the Shakti Peetha. This is where Shakthi's heart should have fallen and is worshiped as Jaya Durga. Bhairava is additionally called Baidyanath. Baidyanath Jyotirlinga sanctuary is one of the celebrated sanctuaries in India. It is a Hindu sanctuary situated in Deoghar locale, Jharkhand. This is otherwise called Baba dham and Baidyanath dham. This is of the 12 Jyothirlingas and it is viewed as a position of asylum for ruler Shiva. Baidyanath Jyothirlinga is situated at Prajwalika Nidhanam. Prajwalika Nidhanam is a burial service put that is likewise called chithabhoomi. This place is renowned for consuming bodies/incineration and passing functions are performed here. Here master Shiva is worshiped as smasan vasin (which means, dwelling in crematorium), sava bhasma bhushita (which means, spreading the body with fiery debris of consumed bodies). As indicated by Shiva Purana, the evil presence Ravana, ruler of Lanka asked master Mahadeva/Shiva and requesting that he return to Lanka. Master Mahadeva/Shiva did not acknowledge his supplication but rather gave him a Linga. He said that the twelve images of the Jyothirlinga were effective to the point that there ought not be a break in the trip and the linga ought not be kept anyplace on the earth. In the event that the linga was put anyplace it is settled to that place and can't be moved. Ravana acknowledge this condition and began the voyage. Master Vishnu showed up before Ravana as a brahmin and conversed with him.Unaware of Vidhnu's craftiness, Ravana requested that the brahmin hold the Jyothirlinga for a moment. Master Vishu acknowledged it and Ravana calmed himself. When he returned, the jyothirlinga had disappeared. When he sought; he thought that it was settled to the earth. Out of disappointment, he squeezed it with his thumb and it got discouraged and tilted marginally. This is the story behind the Linga of this popular Indian sanctuary. Baidyanath Jyotirlinga sanctuary, otherwise called Baba dham and Baidyanath dham is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most holy dwelling places Shiva. To test them, Shiva punctured the three universes as a colossal unending mainstay of light, the jyotirlinga. Vishnu and Brahma split their approaches to downwards and upwards individually to discover the finish of the light in either bearing. Brahma lied that he discovered the end, while Vishnu surrendered his thrashing. Shiva showed up as a moment mainstay of light and reviled Brahma that he would have no place in services while Vishnu would be adored till the finish of endlessness. The jyotirlinga is the incomparable partless reality, out of which Shiva somewhat shows up. The jyothirlinga holy places, along these lines are places where Shiva showed up as a red hot segment of light.Originally there were accepted to be 64 jyothirlingas while 12 of them are thought to be exceptionally propitious and sacred. Each of the twelve jyothirlinga locales take the name of the managing god - each thought to be diverse indication of Shiva. At every one of these destinations, the essential picture is lingam speaking to the beginningless and interminable Stambha column, symbolizing the limitless idea of Shiva. The twelve jyothirlinga are Somnath in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna at Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, Mahakaleswar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, Bhimashankar in Maharashtra, Viswanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Triambakeshwar in Maharashtra, Baidyanath at Deoghar in Jharkhand, Nageswar at Dwarka in Gujarat, Rameshwar at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and Grishneshwar at Aurangabad in Maharashtra. Mahabodhi Temple – Bodh Gaya
The Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bodh Gaya is located in the central part of the state of Bihar, in the northeastern part of India. It is the part of the great Ganges plains. The Mahabodhi Temple is located at the place of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment. Bihar is one of the four holy sites related to the life of the Lord Buddha, and particularly to the attainment of Enlightenment.
Mahabodhi Temple
The Shrine contains a massive Buddha statue, seating cross-legged and earth touching. This is believed to be the spot where Buddha attained Nirvana. Delicately carved stone railings encircle the temple complex that also houses seven various places where Buddha associated a week during the process of enlightenment.
History
The first temple was built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century B.C., and the present temple dates from the 5th or 6th centuries. It is one of the earliest Buddhist temples built entirely with brick, still standing in India, from the late Gupta period. The site of the Mahabodhi Temple provides exceptional records of the events associated with the life of Buddha and subsequent worship, particularly since Emperor Ashoka built the first temple, the balustrades, and the memorial column. The sculpted stone balustrades are an outstanding early example of sculptural relics in stone.
Architecture

The whole temple is built with bricks and is the oldest among the brick structures in India. The Mahabodhi temple tower stands at a height of about 55 meters, which is bounded by four more towers which are built in the same manner. The Mahabodhi temple is bounded by railings made of stone two meters tall. In addition, the ancient railings are made of sandstone around 150 B.C. There are a few structures of Indian gods inside the temple namely “Surya”, the god of sun and “Lakshmi”, the goddess of wealth.
Attractions
The main attraction of Bodh Gaya is the Mahabodhi Temple which was constructed around the original Bodhi Tree which sheltered the Buddha. The temple contains several towers which are built by many people from different parts of the world. A large amount of Buddha statues are clad in the Hindu style. In addition, there is the Niranjana River close to the temple, which has a great scenic beauty.
Bodhi Tree
Currently, the Mahabodhi temple is maintained by the government of Bihar state. The government takes care of its protection and management.
