I was called to the council recently. It was a minor advisor to my region’s lord who invited me. He had brought me in to consult on land values near my home town. I had a mildly successful repair business at the time so I was asked to report on the housing quality in the region. He had also called in dozens of other specialists; an old war hero to comment on military utility, the mill owner to report on annual grain production, the head of the local merchants to consult about the financials. I never saw any of them after that first day. Yet I kept being called into the council chamber every day that week. I finally was allowed to return home after two more weeks and when I did I was surprised to find a royal messenger at my door. 
He handed me the letter, sealed in red, and offered to share his carriage on the way back. Apparently the possibility that I, an esteemed guest of a noble, didn’t own a horse had never occurred to whoever sent him. I spent the first day traveling deciphering the letter. I had been taught my figures and symbols when I was a merchant but the letter was complex. I could read the numbers though and the column labeled as mine was about twice what the column “Et al” read. I didn’t know what that meant but I eventually figured they wanted to ask me about my valuation of the territory again. The messenger was mostly silent that day. He seemed nice enough but something was wrong. I felt a strange uneasiness around him and I found myself making a point to sleep with my belt on for some reason I could never fully put to words. It was our last day of travel that I understood what that feeling was. We had stopped in an outlying village, one of only two between my home and the capitol, and were going to spend the night at the inn. He went off to the tavern for an early dinner while I visited the tailor. With my jacket mending and two new shirts that fit well enough I went to join him. I ate while he drank. The tavern was lively and people had filled every seat, except for those near us. I brushed it off again and we left. The next morning I picked up my jacket and we left. 
We arrived in the capitol just afternoon and I was given just enough time for someone of a higher stature to change before being summoned. The Lord Chamberlain inquired of my journey and I replied as I would to anyone else asking that question. It was easier than my trip home but I would prefer not to travel with the council messaging service again. Another advisor, I believe it was the Minister of Finance’s second or someone to that effect, asked why I would prefer not to. Again I answered honestly, with a slight bit of confusion, that I felt uneasy around them and that the people in the towns also did, I think I made a joke about if drunks think you're scary you probably are somewhere in there too. I spent the rest of the day and most of the best explaining my valuation of the region. Apparently I had been more comprehensive than they had anticipated; including developable land, probable mineral deposits, and cultural factors on top of the housing value. By the end of it I was asked to stay in the capitol, so that I might be called up more easily. I was lucky to have an old friend who ran a small spice shop nearby so I stayed there for the next few days
. It was probably about a week after I arrived back in the capitol that I heard about the execution. Executions were always big affairs back home, attendance was almost mandatory if you weren’t in the fields that day, so I made my way to the square to try and see. It was both astounding and annoying when I realized how serious an affair the capitol made them, I could barely even see the turn into the square much less the scaffold. Vendors shouted prices and wares as everyone jostled for position to see whoever it was to take their turn in the hemp swing. I gave up and went back to my friend’s shop for the day. Just as I thought I had begun to overstay my welcome another letter was delivered. It was carried by a different messenger but I figured that was probably normal. With the amount of letters the council sends they probably employ hundreds of messengers. I spent the next twenty minutes attempting to decipher the overly ambitious message while the messenger watched expectantly before I realized it was just another summons. I excused myself to fetch my jacket and we left immediately. I hadn’t found a day or time so I assumed it was urgent. What the council night urgently needed from a repairman I couldn’t guess but I had already been summoned twice more than I could have dreamed of so I didn’t bother to question it.
I wasn’t brought to the council chambers this time, instead I was brought to a lavishly decorated office. It was empty when I arrived. The messenger asked me to wait here while he informed Regent Archibald. I suppose Archibald is a strange family name but plenty of nobles have strange family names so I brushed it off. Regent was also a strange name but I brushed that off as another noble eccentricity. I stood in the office for a long while, probably about the time it takes a loaf of bread to cook before Lord Archibald arrived. He apologized, stating he had some urgent business that he had to attend to and bid me to take a seat. I sat and when I thanked Lord Archibald for the summons and asked what it was for he insisted I simply call him Regent. I guess he was trying to put me at ease. I nodded my affirmation and commented that Regent was a good name. He laughed at that and asked me why I thought that. I explained that when I was little my family had a dog named Regent. She was a good dog, very sweet but she couldn’t keep the foxes out of our hen house so we had to sell her to a merchant. The merchant has apparently turned her into a coat, I had been so distraught to learn that my sweet friend had been turned into a coat over something like that but I guess that's something everyone goes through. Regent laughed a bit here, a sort of consolation laugh, the type of laugh you give when your friend says something tragic that they think is funny. I guess having a dog turned into a coat is tragic. He thanked me for my service to the council and the throne and told me I would be needed in three days' time. I gladly agreed to be there, I had little choice after all, and bid my goodbyes. I made a dark joke that he should be careful about hanging around me, Regent’s tended to have bad luck with me, before I left. I had always had a darker sense of humor, something that comes with living through the plague and wars I guess. He laughed at my joke and I made my way to a tavern. I wanted to soothe my nerves. 
That night my friend's shop met with disaster. The furnace that he used to dry his spices was accidently overstoked by one of his clerks. Luckily he and his family smelled the burning spices and escaped by sliding down the awning out front. I had gotten too drunk to make my way through the unfamiliar streets so I had slept on a stoop near the tavern that night. Someone in the palace invited us to stay there while his shop was rebuilt. The letter wasn’t signed this time. Just a purple seal. I guessed it was the council’s way of saying it was from all of them, rather than getting 40 signatures from people as busy as Regent. So we moved into the palace. It took us months to figure out how to live with the constant intrusions of servants, maids, and once or twice a week butlers. Eventually we figured it out. 
I was still being called into the council meetings but most of the time I sat there quietly until someone asked me a question. I also tried to sit in while my friend’s daughters were tutored on manners and reading whenever I wasn’t in a meeting. I occasionally chose to help the groundsworkers, it helped to remind myself of who I was. Every now and then I would have to remind a visitor of the palace rules; no weapons and no guests in the kitchen were the most common rules that I had to remind them of. I guess the council took those infractions seriously as I never saw those guests again. I wasn’t called to Regent’s office again but I saw him in most every meeting I attended.  He’d sit near the head of the council table and direct the conversations. I felt I had a responsibility to help him out. After all, he had been so kind to me. So I would point out little mistakes that his clerks had missed and offer a bit of advice on how to prevent them. He always thanked me for my insights. Over time his clerks stopped making those mistakes. It made me happy to be able to help him and somewhat repay his friendship.
I woke up today and realized it’s been two years since I was invited into the palace. It has been an extraordinary two years. But something has been bothering me lately. Everyone is scared of me. They avoid talking around me. I don’t know why. I am just a guest councilor. I’ve been given a proper position in the council, but even the other councilor’s are careful around me. I wonder what happened?
