The man on the radio is riding high on Monday's wave of remembering Val Doonican. Ah yes, those ladies in the floaty dresses, the rocking chair and the signature cardigan. Not my cup of tea but I'd still take a pot full of Val over a barrel full of algorithmic bilge water. Weatherwise we're looking at damp, with some more damp and a heavy side order of damp. The traffic lady came and went whilst I wasn't listening.
Today's groaner: a chicken and an egg walk into a bar and the bartender asks "Who's first?" ;-D badoom tish ... here all week!!
The mock orange (philadelphus) has flowered once more. Beautiful!! Started it's display about 4 years ago. Not planted by me, just another nomad that put down roots. I had one before years ago and was sad as hell, once I sold that house, to see the new occupants hack it (and all the other plants) down just to widen the driveway. Warms my heart to have another one.
Monday, Monday, Monday on another Tuesday in Tuesdayville. Here's July and they started showing Christmas films back in June. The world is continually chaotic ... at least the coffee is consistent ...

FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

Bobbie McGee - Rock And Roll People (1973)
What we have here is a blatant lack of crowd control. I'm all for audience participation, but these exuberant dancers are drawing the limelight away from poor Bobbie. It is behaviour like this that led to the use of cattle-prods on The Val Doonican Show.

Popstand Sunday Tomorrow
Tumblr media
Tomorrow is the third Sunday of the month and it’s Radio Popstand day starting at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time or Universal Time, sounds rather impressive doesn’t it, Universal Time.
We moved our clocks back a few weeks ago, so if you’re not in the UK it may seem we’re coming on an hour late, unless you’ve also moved your clocks then heaven knows what time we come on your local time. You’ll need to work out what 13:30 Universal Time is in your area.
Lots of multi genre music, as is the norm for Popstand including tracks by the following artists: Michael Holm, UNICORN, Vampire Weekend, Dodie Stevens, The Hellacopters, Maurice Chevalier, The Rolling Stones, Elmore James, Joni Mitchell, Taylor Swift, Queen and Megan Thee Stallion, Val Doonican, Fatboy Slim and many more, plus me telling you about the music and other items of interest in our hourly news bulletins.
Radio Popstand is on the Stationhead app and you need to link your Spotify or Apple Music premium account to your Stationhead account to hear the music.

𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟓. The Evening Times advertised Lena’s forthcoming concert at the Glasgow Apollo theatre on Tuesday 21st October.

𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟐. Lena appeared at the Floral Pavilion, New Brighton, her dad took her and she sat in the car outside crying, she insisted on performing even though she had been ill, and missed her previous two Sundays engagements in Leeds and Blackpool. Three bars into her first song she got a lump in her throat, she broke down crying, turned her back on the audience and whispered into the Microphone “ Sorry, I can’t go on”.
𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟐. Val Doonican was at the Blackpool Opera House, the programme had an advert for Lena’s show on the 3rd October. I think that it was cancelled due to her ill health.
𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟔. The Daily Record reported that Lena’s parents were about to divorce after two years separation.

What became of the broken-hearted? Meet the unlucky in love, 1969
Even owning a boutique and an MG sports car was no guarantee of a successful relationship Was society getting sadder? On 10 August 1969, the Observer kicked off an investigation into ‘new aspects of unhappiness’ by talking to people who were unlucky in love. Music manager Eve Taylor, 53, worked with Sandie Shaw and Val Doonican, but success made personal fulfilment elusive: ‘It’s the hardest thing in the world for me to meet somebody now that I’m in the position I’m in.’ Following two ‘disastrous’ marriages, she was ‘looking for somebody to love me,’ but usually stayed home in her nightie, dealing with client dramas. ‘I haven’t got anybody to tell my own troubles to,’ she said.’ ‘Why do I always fall in love (loosely used word) with the wrong men,’ bemoaned ‘pretty girl’ Sindy Herbert, 25. A trail of relationship chaos and heartbreak was complicated by drug addiction and a spell in a psychiatric hospital. She was considering becoming a nun or going to India ‘to explore Eastern culture and the smoking scene’. Continue reading... http://dlvr.it/SwrF0g

Charlie McCoy in London 2019
Charlie is well known as the top Nashville session harmonica player with around 40 LPs of his own and many more as a session man with Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Johnny Cash … He has been a regular visitor to France and he was in the UK in 1978 when he played Stone Fox Chase, the theme music from the Old Grey Whistle Test with Val Doonican on his BBC TV show. This tune from the Area Code 615 album is one of the best known harmonica tracks in Britain.
Charlie was back again in September for a couple of shows at the Pizza Express Live, in Holborn, London, with the Robert Wells Trio. He put on a great show playing a wide range of blues, soul and country music and also took time to talk to the many harp lovers in the audience.
Charlie’s autobiography came out this year. It is a great read and is full of stories about the many sessions he played on and the musicians he has met since his career began in 1958.
