Hi!
Before I start I just wanted to tell you that I absolutely love your works, 'Emigre' as well as 'The Stars keep watch' and I am really grateful for you giving us all such amazing and detailed views of the andorian culture.
I've read almost all of them, so I'm pretty sure that you didn't answer this question before, but in case you did, just ignore this ask :)
How excactly do andorian names work in your opinion. I get the whole clan thing etc. but is there an aspect that is present in all names e.g. that it starts with certain letters? Or is there a certain way a name is supposed to sound like to be andorian?
After all there is a vast difference between the names "Kevin" and "Vilashral 'Shral' of Clan Hrisvalar".
If there's not an answer to the question, it's fine too. I'm just curious if there's like a rule when you create your names? If you understand what I mean?
Hi there! And my goodness, thank you! I'm always so happy to meet new readers!
So my Andorian name process usually starts by checking over canon names. When naming a new character, I want to follow the hallmarks of canon Andorian names without copying them exactly.
For example, these are a mix of female and male canon names:
Ghee P'trell
Jennifer Sh'reyan
Keval
Krotus
Talah
Talas
Talla
Telev
Thy'lek Shran
Tholos
Thon
Thoris
Tysess
Ryn
Shras Endilev
Shukar
Va'Al Trask
Va'Kel Shon
Val Shon
Umarin
There are more, of course, but even with a small sample we can see a few things. Names beginning with the letter T are very popular, but the given names also tend to be two-to-three syllable long names. Beyond that, there's a mix of different types of vowels (short and long) and most of the consonants tend to be softer ones, though not exclusively.
For my headcanons and naming purposes, I have a couple of considerations to look at from this point. The first headcanon is that Andorians do not generally give non-Andorians their full names, because Andorii is a very sibilant language with a lot of soft sounds and drawn out vowels in rapid succession. Outsiders generally don't get their names right, so it's easier to go by shortened by-name than have to cringe every time your commanding officer calls you a salad by mistake.
The second headcanon builds on the first, in that full given names are broken into fragments. There are the face-name fragments that you give to strangers and off-worlders, and then there's the full name. Some individuals make use of a third fragment, which is a name used by close friends and loved ones, but it's less common. Not everyone abides by these rules, as there are always exceptions to every rule, but it's generally a good rule of thumb - especially with a culture where it's entirely too easy to find yourself in a duel to the death.
Taking all of that into account, I actually find name generators (I like this one, personally) for Andorian names to be a great starting point for creating a new name. A lot of the generated suggestions are meh, but if I can get a starting point, then I can fiddle with it until I have a name that feels right.
So, for example, I just generated ten female names:
Sevo Zh'viahliq Villen Sh'tiveq Ethrivia Zh'shrihres Esilaa Sh'vhiathrarh Aseraa Sh'kitrit Jhalli Sh'okialrarh Ipythosh Zh'rhethit Shryssa Zh'rolrirh Threra Zh'rhikress Vamaa Zh'ataakross
These are all kind of same-samey and a bit... jumbled, to look at. I want a name that a reader can look at without their eyes glazing over. So, what happens now is I take the likeliest lads (ladies in this case) of the lot and workshop them.
Let's say I want to do something with Shryssa Zh'rolrirh, Aseraa Sh'kitrit, and Vamaa Zh'ktaakross.
Shryssa Zh'rolrirh - a good starting foundation, but I already have a character called Shryss and they've reversed the capitalization of the rank and Clan name. In this case, I'll cannibalize one of the other names. The Clan name doesn't quite feel right to me, so I'll grab one of the other pre-generated ones and modify it.
Aseraa Sh'kitrit - I'm generally happy with this name, though I think the Clan name is a little meh, but it feels like I took "Sarah", dropped the H, added a vowel, and called it done. So, let's see if we can't make it sound more properly alien and maybe swap the Clan name for something else.
Vamaa Zh'ktaakross - this is the one I want to change the least, actually, but Vamaa still seems more like a face-name than a full name, so we'll adapt it a little.
Therefore, we get:
Shryssa Zh'rolrirh -> Jhalleshryssa "Shryssa" zh'Tiivekh -> Shryssa
Aseraa Sh'kitrit -> Ipseseraa "Seraa" sh'Shras -> Seraa
Vamaa Zh'ktaakross -> Ulavamaal "Vamaa" zh'Kraakross -> Vamaa
It's not a perfect system, and sometimes names just come to me on the spot rather than requiring help from a generator or other sources.
So let's look at Ambassador Thoris. Thoris is his face-name, but his full name is Anlenthoris th'Kor. In official documents, he is referred to by his full name, Clan, and rank, but in his day-to-day working life he is Thoris. In his personal life, his spouses call him Anlen. Under no circumstances would it ever be appropriate for someone like Dagmar or Shral to call him Anlen - the inference of having an intimate relationship with a married man of his rank and position would be considered a duelling offense.
Thanks for the ask! Hopefully I've managed to answer your questions, but I always welcome more if I haven't!

Lieutenant Sayako-34 Madison - Tied for the title of youngest member of the USS Sorcerer's senior staff at only 27 years old, and serving as Chief Flight Controller, Sayako-34 began their Starfleet career as a shuttle pilot on Earth Spacedock.
Graduating Starfleet Academy in 2407, Sayako-34 spent 2 years shuttling VIPs to and from San Francisco. Quickly growing bored with this routine, the young Hermat requested that they be re-assigned to a long range Starfleet vessel. Their request would be granted on July 7, 2409, the day before the Iconian War would begin, joining the crew of the Defiant-class USS Belfast (captained by Captain Va'Kel Shon, later famous for captaining the USS Enterprise-F during the Iconian War). The Belfast would be destroyed in one of the first battles of the war. Sayako-34 would survive the Belfasts' destruction, though injured. Once they recovered, they were re-assigned to the USS Sorcerer in 2410, fighting alongside the crew during the rest of the conflict, meeting their eventual fiancee Lieutenant Elsie Madison, now the Sorcerer's Chief Operations Officer, in the process. Again surviving the crippling of their starship during the Battle of Midnight, this time uninjured, Sayako-34 and Elsie would be re-assigned to the ship when it was recommissioned in 2416.

The Enterprise-F features heavily in Star Trek Online and in comics, where it was captained briefly by Data/B4 (the first season of Picard rendered that non-canon) and mostly by Va'Kel Shon, who as far as I know is unique to Star Trek Online.

Va’Kel Shon/Jorel Quinn/James Kurland/Original Female Betazoid Character (Vianni Dice) EXPLICIT fanfic, 4.7k words
Dice belongs to @lrgggii
Summary:
Dice is ordered to have some mandatory relaxation time in Admiral Quinn's quarters, the trauma of the Iconian war allowing her no respite. She doesn't expect to see Shon and Kurland waiting for her, however.
After letting loose--with some totally legal Romulan Ale--for some much deserved destress time, Dice teases Shon a little too much. Kurland and Quinn take quick interest in what unfolds in front of them, leading to an unforgettable night with unfortunate realizations.

Hakeev bumped into Va’Kel Shon in Q’s Winter Wonderland, and both wished to wear the winter crop tops. They lamented how they weren’t allowed. Shon specifically wanted to wear a rainbow crop top. So I have corrected this grave injustice; now they can show off their midriffs as much as they like.

Babylon 5, first watch on the rewatch, "Believers"
Edit: ohh, now I'm way too early with this, aren't I? We continue in April! Ah well, the post is up. :P I was watching this directly after work and it was like that old joke: "oh man, it's like you never left work". One of the first Franklin-focused episodes, and it was a premise that's a very familiar one. When people are willing to die for their beliefs, and you think they're wrong, what do you do? The outcome was obvious to me as soon as the set up was done; you do the surgery, the parents will kill the child. Because you do not have the time or clout to upend their entire worldview, and they will become murderers if they think the alternative is a fate worse than death. There's no other outcome; few other things force untrained people to kill, but this is one of them. "Sure is for those with nothing on the line", indeed. When you are in a crisis it is too fucking late to change someone's worldview; it either saves them or it doesn't. And in this case, it didn't. However, frankly, I think the authors pulled their punches. After the "oh, our veterinarians cut animals open all the time, but you can't do that with people", I was seriously expecting something along the lines of "people who are cut open become animals". If you wanted to be kinder, then the check-in before the surgery would simply have failed and they didn't find the mechanisms - and then you really do get a shell of a person. I otherwise loved that the check was there - "is there anything that justifies these beliefs?". Without it, Franklin came off as pretty damned overconfident even for a xenobiologist - how are you this bloody sure that you won't harm the kid?
However, I honestly thought they were setting up for a much more horrifying version - that you cut someone open, and they become food animals. Yeah, while retaining sentience and all. Just cultural things: you lose body integrity, then everyone else eats you.
Franklin's biggest mistake, really, was in not considering this scenario. If he wanted to start this fight, he ought to have been ready to either ditch the station and adopt the kid, or find him a place to live, or... Find out everything he can about the breaking of skin and is there anything they can do to stop the soul from escaping.
The thing is, as far as fictional taboos go, this is one that's nearly impossible to keep over a long-lived body's lifetime! Bodies get damaged! This means that our aliens' culture most likely has ways of getting around this sort of thing - measures that can be taken to stop the soul from escaping. Instead, Franklin attempted to force things on his terms - and lost. Just as the parents lost when trying to force things with the ambassadors.
Speaking of whom - I loved those scenes. But also, Franklin? Even if the ambassadors won't interfere for our aliens, it is damned well worth a try getting, say, Delenn (and her knowledge of souls) to put on a show.
I do like the lesson here. You cannot fight an entire planet, nor an entire history, alone and win. You might become a stepping stone in someone else's victory - perhaps in 100 years someone will remember the precedent and use it - but you can't win.
Random notes: planet Placebo is wonderful! And I loved the kid comforting the doctor in his own way, by knowing what the "egg" was, very realistic. I liked Shon in general (although the name gave me Star Trek Online vibes; here's headcanon to a reincarnation to Va'Kel Shon, Andorian captain of the Enterprise!) - brave, lively, and smart enough to understand the adults and make his own choices.
I liked how Sinclair handled the whole catastrophe; and I liked that he had no patience for Franklin's games, but sympathy for his predicament.
And, of course, I liked Ivanova being restless and doing her job. Good on her, with the pilots!
