We have currently been the best part of two days without our trusty VW Chico, and are feeling distinctly disempowered without it. I took it in for an annual service on Monday, and got a phone call around lunchtime informing me of a substantial list of items that needed attention, sooner rather than later. Which, to be fair, was not totally unexpected. Brake pads and discs take a lot of stick with all the hills and 4-way Stops in Cape Town; the coolant reservoir had jammed shut; and the age of the vehicle indicated that timing belts and the like would have to be replaced at some point. All told, it will not be a high price to pay for reliable, if basic, transport. Heads sometimes turn at the sight of an elderly white guy driving something you expect to see in a township or in the student car park. Beggars (every traffic light has one) not infrequently take one look and pass on to the next vehicle in the queue. It’s also totally immune to the most common form of vehicle theft here; radio jamming. Drivers park, and rely on a quick press of the remote to lock the car as they walk away; but if you didn’t check the doorhandles, that smart-casual guy just across from you might not have been texting on his iPhone at all, but cancelling your “lock” signal, so that he can help himself to anything in your car (or even the car itself) once you’re safely in the shops. With old technology -- all locks on physical keys only -- the Chico is completely immune to this, and to any smart electronic tricks to unlock the transmission. The gearstick also has a separate-key-only, physical lock; even if you broke a window for access and hot-wired the car, you could only drive it in reverse. Someone would be sure to notice. As they say, you can’t beat a good old ‘un. So I’m about to stump up for a mid-four-figure repair bill; but again, this is in Rand, with 19 point something to the pound ... and it would have cost twice that in the UK. At least.
