Vmware horizon client loading failed
Tumblr media
#Vmware horizon client loading failed manual#
Got it working last week! Just want to post this to help anyone else that may be having issues with the iApp or the configuration in general for smart card, SAML, etc. The part I don't understand is why the same connection from a web browser goes on to the SAML part of the connection (which I can see in APM but not sure where to find it on the Horizon side. I understand that all the failures are reactionary to the Connection server not being able to find a machine that it wants to send me to. All I see in the APM log at that point is "notice apmd: 01490005:5: /Common/horizon.app/horizon:Common:5f616461: Following rule 'fallback' from item 'View Client Cert Inspection' to ending 'Deny.'" The client's explanation is even more vague with "Authentication Failure." If I'm going there from the client, the next thing I see in the log is "Unverified CHANGEKEY message discarded, machine 'cn=ca70f223-b584-4cc4-a489-230b73bf92b6,ou=servers,dc=vdi,dc=vmware,dc=int' does not exist. I actually can see the cert getting there from the client and the browser (it is the same cert - and the correct one at that). The iApp will set this value on your client ssl profile to 60 seconds but I mention it in case you selected a pre-configured ssl client profile or for some reason are taking longer than 60 seconds to send certificate.īoneyard, I was able to access the logs on the connection server today. This means you have to enter smartcard pin and sent client certificate within 10 seconds of making your initial connection. You could also be hitting a time out issue regarding client side ssl handshake timeout, as the default is set to 10 seconds. Of course you will need to select a valid certificate (one that has been issued by a CA selected in question "Which CA certificate bundle do you want to use for your trusted certificate authorities?", and is valid). Doing so will make it so the client is able to view all client certificates rather then just certificates issued by the CA root certificate selected. Modify the question "Which CA certificate bundle do you want to use for your advertised certificate authorities?" to none. This could mean you are not sending a certificate at all, or perhaps are not sending one that matches your allowed CA issued certs. With that said, do you see the Access policy completing successfully for both clients or only HTML? There is an option in the iApp that might help a little during certificate selection, I point this out as I noted you are not passing certificate authentication when using the horizon client. I would open a support case, as they will be able to review log files to determine at which point authentication is failing and more quickly get your environment working. I could really use some guidance on this. SAML authentication is seen for the browser connection the cert inspection from the same smartcard passes where it fails on connections from the Horizon client. The main thing is the APM log looks great.
#Vmware horizon client loading failed manual#
If I attempt the same exact connection through a regular web browser via HTML 5, I can authenticate to the webtop where the authentication fails to the back end (the documentation says that's what should happen and that manual login has to occur from the webtop). The horizon client will prompt for a pin and then after a second or two display "Authentication Failure." APM logs consistently show the access policy failing at the cert inspection step. Both the View server and F5 have been configured according to the companion guide for the iapp. The feature we really want to implement is using smartcard authentication with SAML 2.0 through the horizon client. Currently attempting setup with the f5.vmware_view.v1.5.1 iapp template. I am running Big IP version 12.1.0 with APM and Horizon View 7.0.1.

In 2021, about 80% of businesses experienced an email-based ransomware assault.
Tumblr media
Proofpoint presented research on Tuesday claiming that in 2021, 78 percent of firms would suffer an email-based ransomware assault, and 77 percent will encounter business email compromise (BEC) threats.
Proofpoint's State of the Phish report for 2022 concluded that hackers are still focusing on compromising individuals rather than using technical flaws to get access to systems.
According to Alan Lefort, senior vice president and general manager of security awareness training at Proofpoint, "email remains the preferred attack tool for cyber criminals, so there's definite value in developing a culture of security." "As the threat landscape evolves and work-from-anywhere becomes more popular, it's vital that firms empower their employees and support their efforts to learn and apply new cyber skills at work and at home."
According to Matthew Warner, co-founder and CTO of Blumira, phishing has become one of the most popular means of ransomware entry into an environment. To get initial access, some ransomware gangs would brute force public RDP servers or exploit vulnerabilities like Exchange with ProxyShell or VMWare Horizon with Log4j, according to Warner, although this requires more tools and targeting.
"It has long been proven — and the Proofpoint figures support this — that attackers will succeed if they hit a company with phishing emails enough times," Warner said. "Then it's just a question of whether the attackers can send weaponized documents via email or persuade the victim to download and run a payload." Ransomware created from phishing has become just another tool for attackers in the grand system of defensive protection. The chances of success grow dramatically if threat actors can send phishing emails while concurrently checking for known-vulnerable services and credential stuffing."
It's not that 78 percent of the 600 survey participants were victims of a full-fledged ransomware attack, according to Chris Clements, vice president of solutions architecture at Cerberus Sentinel, but that they saw phishing emails that attempted to begin a ransomware attack.
"In light of that, the 78 percent figure seemed to me to be quite low," Clements added. "I would expect any firm of any size to receive a phishing email attempting to deploy ransomware over the course of a year." It's possible that all of the respondents received ransomware-targeted phishing attempts, but that they went unnoticed or were stopped by spam filtering or antivirus measures that the participants were unaware of."

Creating a virtualization platform in HCN health-oriented company
HCN (Health Choice Network) is a health-focused company based in Miami, Florida, and is a virtual health protection organization that monitors the health of 3.2 million Miami residents. The company has mobile online care units that provide patient care and emergency services on site. It is clear that the provision of decentralized and dispersed health services requires access to a comprehensive database and classified software and data so that forces, wherever they are working, can access information and record the status of individuals, communications with each other, and establish a hub and access HCN monitoring software. That's why the company decided to design a comprehensive cloud-based online system to use it to perform the company's missions, which were very important and vital, efficiently. So, HCN's IT consultants suggested the virtualization platform and using small terminals instead of older computers. The factors that were important for the company are mentioned below.
Ease of Communication
Due to the HCN field of activity, which is very vital and related to people's health, as well as the need of quickly connect to the database in the field of emergency work is very important. Therefore, a solution should be proposed that allow fast and uninterrupted communication with a minimum of bandwidth. The virtualized system, using the optimal bandwidth management feature of PCOIP protocol, occupies less bandwidth and enables the connection of desktop and application as soon as possible through security server and Netscaler.
Communication Stability
Due to the fact that HCN is active in the field of human health, they are active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; Therefore, the computer devices required by this company must be able to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and must always be ready to work without damage and with a long life, which makes it possible to use zero clients, because zero clients are fan less and have low power consumption, which allows for long life as well as useful operation without continuous downtime 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To be used on a mobile basis by the medical staff. All these features make it possible for the systems not to crash and as a result, the communication between the mobile staff and the center is stable.
Flexibility in using different software platforms
Due to the variety of software platforms, some of the company's programs can be used exclusively on the Microsoft platform, such as the SQL database and HCN monitoring software. There are also other softwares used by the medical staff that are related to the IOS platform. Alarm software is also based on the secure and fast Linux platform. The challenge of a platform being able to centralize all of this software across multiple platforms and provide mobile and static staff in one format were involved the company officials' thoughts. In this regard, the Vmware horizon view virtualization platform provided this feature, so that horizon view virtualization enabled the creation of the platform of all three platforms together and has the ability to present simultaneously in one template. This valuable virtualization capability helped HCN overcome this challenge and provide all of its software content in one format, using a virtualization platform and zero client systems for mobile and fixed forces at the center. On the other hand, it provided monitoring of the entire workforce and the status of the working moments, and provided sectoral statistics and their overall composition to provide a general report, for a general analysis of the company's performance.
Communication Security
According to HCN context, it is obvious that the process of transmitting information over the network should be immediate as well as secure, because the slightest security issue can disrupt the HCN service process and may endanger human lives. This was not far from the minds of HCN executives, and it was a major concern for them, which fortunately helped them with the PCOIP protocol solution in terms of security, as the PCOIP protocol transfers only encrypted pixels in the transfer layer instead of recoverable data, which is very secure. And, of course, in the event of a breach, it is unusable, which in itself eliminates the need for hackers to hack into the PCOIP virtualized environment. On the other hand, Vmware uses strong encryption in horizon view virtualization as well as powerful firewalls to prevent hacking into the database and project servers.
"We have solved all the challenges that we had in mind in the field of HCN online and mobile platform with the right advice and the use of virtualization platform and zero client systems, and now our only concern is the health of the people of Miami," said George Sint, HCN CEO.
HCN executives are now expanding their operations throughout Florida and then into the United States as a whole.

Endless options with VMware Horizon and VMware Workspace ONE
By Curtis Brown
There are a considerable number of blog posts and articles that have looked at the individual components of the VMware® End User Compute stacks, so I thought I’d take a high-level look at some of what’s possible when we take the whole solution in its entirety.
The Moving Parts
In the early days of VMware’s End User Compute efforts, we were looking at a relatively simple stack of VMware vCenter, ESX and Virtual Desktop Manager (or, to you young folks, Horizon View 1.0 or 2.0 back in 2007/8).  These days, things are somewhat more powerful, offering a wider array of capabilities, but these capabilities also require more moving parts.
The diagram below shows the VMware components that could be deployed in a solution.
Tumblr media
 Now, let’s look a little deeper…
Tumblr media
For Virtual Desktop delivery, we have the underlying infrastructure of VMware vSphere with vCenter and ESXi.  However, we can enhance this further in two ways. Firstly, we can leverage local storage by implementing VMware vSAN rather than rely on a SAN/NAS based solution. Secondly, we could deploy VMware NSX to provide enhanced security in the form of micro-segmentation of the network as well as anti-malware protection using Guest Introspection.
For publishing desktops, we have VMware Horizon View. The connection servers provide the brains, managing entitlements and provisioning of desktop and application pools. For secure access from untrusted or external networks, we deploy either Security Servers, or, more recently, Unified Access Gateway appliances to serve as a proxy into the solution.  VMware Horizon View Composer is used to manage and deploy non-persistent Linked Clone desktops.  Although this approach is in decline as Instant Clone technology replaces it.
Tumblr media
We then need to consider the management and delivery of applications and user settings.  For the latter, we can integrate VMware User Environment Manager.  This can manage both environmental settings (including delivery of application shortcuts, drive mappings etc) as well as eliminating the issues related to Windows Roaming Profiles.  For application delivery, we can use App Volumes within the virtual estate or leverage the estate itself to publish Remote Desktop Session Host based remote applications.  ThinApp, although somewhat out of favour these days, remains an option for direct delivery to Windows Endpoints (via VMware Workspace ONE Identity Manager) or within Horizon View desktops.
Tumblr media
When it comes to monitoring the estate, we can use VMware vRealize Operations Manager with the VMware Horizon Management Pack.  It’s possible to expand further still by leveraging more of the vRealize suite, notably VMware vRealize Log Insight for capturing logs from both the solution as well as the environment.
Tumblr media
We then move out into two topics – The Endpoint and the User. These are somewhat integrated topics these days as they do overlap.
VMware Workspace ONE comprises two key elements:
Unified Endpoint Management can provide control, configuration and administration to endpoints, be they mobile devices or traditional desktops.
Identity Manager provides the user authentication layer into the solution as a whole, while also providing a unified catalogue of applications and services, whether publish via VMware Horizon or whether through single sign-on to cloud services.
Another offering that is often overlooked, but still a part of the VMware Horizon licensing (at the Advanced and Enterprise level) is VMware Mirage.  This can provide image level management of Windows based client desktop/laptops. FLEX leverages the Mirage infrastructure in conjunction with VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion to provide an offline VDI capability.
What parts are available is largely defined by what is purchased.  Some parts are included in the various VMware Horizon editions, while some, notably VMware vSAN, VMware NSX and VMware Horizon FLEX are separate products.  In the case of Workspace ONE, VMware Horizon Advanced and above includes just Workspace ONE Identity Manager Standard.  To get the full Workspace ONE suite requires purchase of Workspace ONE as a specific product.
VMware Horizon editions can be compared at:
https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/products/horizon/vmware-horizon-editions-compare-chart.pdf.
 The Art of the Possible
For the purposes of looking at what is possible, let us assume that an Alien Space Bat has deemed it fit to leave an unlimited budget for us to acquire all these tools.  Here’s a few ideas of what we could achieve:
By integrating the full VMware Workspace ONE with Horizon, we can fully manage security between a user, a managed endpoint and access to Virtual Desktops.  By managing the device using VMware Workspace ONE Unified Endpoint Management and establishing Compliance checking, we can define an Identity Manager policy that allows access only to users with valid credentials who are using compliant devices to the Workspace ONE catalogue. In turn, users can then access a VDI desktop from the relevant icon in Workspace ONE.
Tumblr media
It is possible to provide a single portal to a geographically spread VMware Horizon VDI offering that will connect users seamlessly to the nearest desktop instance. Workspace ONE Identity Manager can provide location awareness based on client IP address.  By defining IP ranges, and relating these to the public DNS name for the local Horizon site, Workspace ONE will direct users to the nearest VMware Horizon site for optimum performance.  This leverages VMware Horizon Cloud Pod Architecture to present a common entitlement across all instances.
Tumblr media
App Volumes, User Environment Manager and NSX Distributed Firewall Rules can be tied to Active Directory groups.  We can therefore deploy an application in an App Volumes App Stack, with a standard configuration provided by UEM and permit traffic from the application to a specific server all tied to a single Active Directory Group.
Tumblr media
And these are but a few options.  When you consider that a number of these offerings are now available in a cloud-based form, the options broaden still.  Workspace ONE components both offer cloud and on-premises variants, while VMware Horizon now includes not only the on-premises offering, but also the ability to deploy on top of VMware Cloud on AWS or the full Desktop-as-a-Service offering of Horizon Cloud.
 Closing Thoughts…
As a range of products that can be built in an array of different configurations, it is possible to design and deploy solutions that fit a broad variety of use cases, from simple to very specific.

VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 (Desktop and Mobility Deployment)
The industry-recognized VCAP6-DTM Deploy certification validates that you know how to deploy and optimize VMware Horizon 6 (with View) environments. It demonstrates that you have the knowledge and skills necessary to leverage best practices to provide a scalable and dependable Business Mobility platform for your business. Some of the subject areas include:
Configuring and managing Horizon View components, configuring cloud pod archituecture, configuring Group Policy settings related to Horizon View, Configuring and optimizing desktop images for Horizon View & Mirage, Configuring and managing App Volumes AppStacks, Configuring desktop pools, Configuring and deploying ThinApp packaged applications, Configuring VMWare Identity Manager, etc.
Sebastian's take on the vcap certification examination: "In my own point of view VCAP6 exam is much better experience compared to VCAP5, the newest exam looks exactly like VMware HOL. The user interface is effortless, questions are set up on the right area of the screen, and could be concealed to the side or restored when necessary.
My advise on the questions windowpane: if you would like make it floating, you should know how to restore it back. I ended up shifting it all around because I forget how to recover it back. The two arrows that seemed like control buttons on the top were designed to dock the window to right of left. Fonts can be resized, which in my view was a lot better than scrolling down and up the question. The reaction speed of the entire interface was a lot faster in comparison with VCAP5.5, and there wasn't any lagging period experienced when changing from window to window.
One thing to bear in mind: BACKSPACE key is not working! I do believe this is beneficial as you don’t reload your test window by mistake, yet, it could be annoying at times when you type some thing wrongly and you have to select and press Del to remove. The Desktop and shortcuts were organized very well, and essential applications like browser or Mirage console can be launched.
You will find there's great user interface for Remote Desktop Manager and you'll discover all necessary RDP connection to servers or desktops with no need to type username and password. The web browser had all the links in the Favorite Bar. At the time I'm penning this, there is no additional Thirty minute extension for Non-Native English speaker at No-Native English country, which is a bummer. You'll find thirty-nine question to fill out within the three hours period, which can be actually really hard for non-native English speakers just like me.
A number of questions take time to complete vmware certification, making it best to neglect the questions that you cannot answer, and complete those you are able to. By the end of the 39 questions, you'll be able to come back to the uncompleted questions in case you still have time. Don't squander a long time on one single question!
The exam blue print are available on my web site at Szumigalski.com. It is well-organized and following it for the exam preparation should help a great deal. Of course, the best is if you'll have plenty of practical experience! I’m truly very pleased with the exam experience, though I passed this time around by tiny margin, but I really know what I missed for the exam, learn from the blunders and practice harder to acquaint myself with the environment. This certificates will certainly open up your job prospects!"
