Just as she’d closed her eyes in preparation for imminent impact, Cici felt someone grab her from under her arms, breaking her fall and lifting her up into the air.

The girl’s long brunette braid had fallen out as she plummeted, now hanging loosely down her front as she tried to get a good look at her rescuer. The arms that held her up were small, but evidently strong, the skin tone darker than Cici was used to seeing.

But what startled her was what was keeping them hovering in the air. She could hear faint buzzing over the crashing of the waves below, and she glanced behind her to see a pair of rapidly moving wings as long as she was tall.

She gasped in fright.

“Hey, don’t be scared. I just saved you.”

A voice said, small and high pitched. A little girl’s voice. It was then that Cici also noticed the locks of dark brown hair being blown around in the winds generated by the wings.
