HEADCANON. vampires ekons are not simply monsters to lynn. they are manipulative, deplorable beasts. with elevated cunning no man could comprehend and a bite so cruel, they were not senseless. they knew what they were doing. they were intentional. deceitful. and like a prowling cat, they would play with their food until the mouse was beaten by exhaustion. only then would they feed.
lynn’s married life was easy, despite moving from her home country, despite adjusting to a very english world. she had blake. they had each other through it all. but someone something would take that all away.
for months, lynn would catch a figure out of the corner of her eye, a tall, pale man who greeted her with a fox’s grin. he never approached her, keeping his distance, and at first she thought him harmless enough. time went on and he began venturing closer to their home, talking with blake on the street, making plans. nothing but idle conversation, lynn tried to tell herself. and yet lynn still expressed her discomfort. blake saw nothing wrong, his voice almost a low whisper as he spoke.
the conversations grew longer and soon blake invited the pale man inside their home. for dinner, her husband had said. he wanted to come for dinner. for days he would not leave and lynn could not understand why. each time she tried to ask him who he was or what he was doing, her mind would darken, the thoughts seemingly blown away. on the fourth night of his stay, he beckoned the couple into the kitchen.
i was promised dinner, he told them. who shall it be? lynn’s heart raced, panic gripping tight, but she could not move from her seat. blake’s gaze dropped to the ground, his face blank. his mind far from this room. it was not until the pale man circled behind lynn, brushed the rapid pulse on her neck with the tip of his finger did blake speak up. not her, he said. not lynn. the pale man was happy enough to oblige and instead he was at blake’s side, sinking sharpened teeth into his neck. lynn screamed. her world went black and when she awoke her husband was lying on the floor, pale eyes cast to the ceiling.

    Lynn’s gaze was sharp, her mouth set in a firm line. The less civilians knew, the better. There was too great a risk for those untrained to involve themselves in this war. It would only strengthen the epidemic and give rise to the growing numbers of monsters lurking in the shadows.
    “Temo di no. No. Revealing too much will compromise my work. It's best if you just stay off the streets tonight.”

     In the dead of night, the Guard had their run of the streets. Most citizens were secured closed doors to sleep or for fear of the sickness seeping through the heart of London. The few who strayed were gathered in smaller outcrops, hubs of activity by day, but far from the Guard’s work. They worked best in the darkness, in the back alleys where no sane person would travel alone. The underbelly of the city would be kept safe under the Guard’s watch from the creatures who sprang from the shadows.
    One such beast gave Lynn Langermann a hell of a fight. No matter how many bolts she shot into its hide, it pursued her through the alley. Her fellow soldiers had been thrown to the ground, suffering severe injuries, but the beast cut her off from them, pushing her deeper into the darkness. Faster and faster she ran until she could no longer here the panting and snarls at her heels. Lynn slowed, daring to look over her shoulder. The creature was gone, but her guard did not waver. Some of them were smarter than others.
    Pushing forward, she spied faint movement in the darkness. Her crossbow was at the ready in aa moment’s notice. There was a hesitation on the trigger when a woman stepped out into the dimly lit alley. Lynn examined her for any telltale signs of vampirism, but she couldn’t tell in this lighting. Her crossbow was lowered, but her finger still brushed its trigger.
    “Miss,” began Lynn, stepping closer to the other. Even as her eyes were on the woman before her, she was listening for any hint of the creature's return. “Please return to your home.” A daring hand squeezed the woman’s elbow gently, as if to escort her away.
                                                      “It’s not safe here.”

@unethicalpractice
    Thick silence swelled in the room. No longer did cries of pain shake the walls or the sharp barks of her men ring out. Through brutal torture, the confession was made. Edgar Swansea was the cause of the epidemic. It was by his hand so many were dead and those who slipped past death’s bony finger roamed the streets. Lynn’s hatred burned, a slow boil churning in her gut, and impulse wanted nothing more than for him to rot. But what would killing him achieve? Taking human life would make them no better than the leeches who stalked the streets in search of their next meal. Taking human life was monstrous and she would not be a part of that world. She joined the Guard on the promise of protecting people, defending them from the shadows that go bump in the night.
         If Swansea suffered this treatment, what’s to stop the Guard from doing it again?
    With her heart thudding in her throat, Lynn ordered her men to exit and wait for further orders outside. She was alone with the doctor now, his wrists tied above his head and hanging limp. Beaten and broken, it was unclear if he would survive for much longer. But she had to try. She couldn’t have his blood on her hands. Moving forward, she pulled her dagger free and cut the rope holding the doctor upright. She shouldered his weight with a grunt, digging her heels into the floor to ensure he would not crumple.
                                                   “Walk, doctor. We’re leaving.”
