Hi! I just wanted to say thank u for saying u knew VCU allowed police to brutalize students during its BLM protests. While what went on last night is absolutely UNPRECEDENTED & should be shocking & horrifying, as someone who was a student demanding Justice for Mike Brown & running from chemical agents just for BEING OUTSIDE after VCU's basketball team lost the Final 4, it's a relief to know what happened to us 10-15 years ago hasn't been forgotten 🤝

VCU won’t admit it but its student body has never allowed for injustices to occur no matter how much they try to cover it up and silence us. We will stand and we always will. Nothing that has happened has been unprecedented imo, because VCU has always treated their student body this way and knows the environment they are creating. You can’t state you’re a liberal arts college and be surprised that students won’t allow for the repeated discrimination and lack of action towards actual social justice issues. The X Files 30th Anniversary Mulder Appreciation Post

The thing about Mulder for me, more so than Scully (I don't need to explain the cultural impact her representation has for women) is how relatable he is. When I watched the x files for the first time, even as I thought I was a woman at the time, I didn't at all identify with her. I think this is because of how queer/ neurdivergent coded (or at least the lense I read it through) Mulder is. Don't get me wrong, I wholly believe that this is unintentional, but the facets of his character add up in this sense.

I think also the time in which I watched the x files is somewhat removed from it's creation meaning that I have been fortunate enough to not experience workplace misogyny to the same extent that Scully has, meaning I relate to it less (? Idk) and The Scully effect has already taken place unbeknownst to me, so I have seen more women in STEM than there was during the nineties so her representation is less significant to me who watched this in 2019.

First of all, the childhood trauma is very much a real representation neurodivergency. The important thing for me is how it changes him and I forms his character/decisions into adulthood even if he doesn't realise it. There have been several times where Scully has pointed out that Mulder is chasing his sister in whatever little girl their case involves which he denies, to the point where Scully stops mentioning it, even though both we the audience and she can see it.

We can see how it informs his trust issues and attachment/abandonment issues. Mulder is generally a dichotomy of too easily trusting (like of deep throat, phoebe, dianna), which then he knows he gets hurt by, so he is also slow to trust (Scully, Skinner, X), creating an inner turmoil of logic vs feeling. Scully is an especially important example of how trust/attachment inform each other in Mulder, where once he trusts Scully isn't a spy, he immediately trusts her with everything, which is a big leap. With Scully, he feels like he doesn't have to hold back and can be who he really is, which is where the queer coding comes in: in Scully he has an ally.

Aside from the fact that queer people often experience all or some of the above neurologically, socially Mulder shares similar experiences because of his beliefs. He is portrayed as an outsider, who doesn't really fit in, even though it feels like he should: he has other normal hobbies like basketball, he can work well with others in a team and get on well with them (I know he doesn't always most of the time but the point is he can) writing profiles to help out other departments when asked, having a good partnership with Reggie and report with the VCU etc. But he is still shunned and ostracised for being different. Despite this, he never properly tries to hide that side of him, standing up for his beliefs in face of the damning consequences (insisting in front of the court that Pusher had supernatural powers for instance).

This also resonates a lot autistic experiences: being able to put on a mask to fit in, but never properly fitting in, a fierce sense of justice and truth despite how it may be perceived. This isn't to say that Mulder is autistic but that his experiences are relatable.

Mulder is also kinda queer coded in that he is never shown to have a dating life (neither he or Scully have let's be real) outside of work, but where as Scully, has had fairly normal seemingly healthy relationships in the past (excusing Daniel), Mulder hasn't that we know of. We get to her about Scully's high-school boyfriend but we don't here about Mulder's high-school relationships. Whilst the absence isn't fool-proof evidence that he didn't have any relationships it is more likely to be perceived by the audience as so. This is much like some queer people's dating experience, where we come to sex and relationships later in life because of both social constraints and internal figuring-stuff-out. Then his past two relationships we do know of have been unhealthy, which isn't to say that all queer people start off in unhealthy relationships but that Mulder's initial relationships feel wrong much the way that some queer people in their initial relationships feel whilst they are still trying to figure stuff out.

Then there is the last straw for me which is his inability to sit still, he is always fiddling with something, throwing pencils in the ceiling, impulsively running off, or calling Scully at inconvenient times because he either misses her or has had a thought that he needs to share immediately which is very adhd of him <3

Duquesne: 2023-24 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Champions

Duquesne earned an NCAA tournament bid for the first time in 47 years, beating fifth-seeded VCU 57-51 on Sunday to win the Atlantic 10 tournament championship.

The sixth-seeded Dukes (24-11) led by 14 at the half, but bringing home that long-awaited invite to March Madness was a struggle. Duquesne scored only 21 points and shot 5-for-29 from the field in the second half, but the small Catholic school in Pittsburgh will head into the NCAA tournament with an eight-game winning streak.

Coach Keith Dambrot, who coached LeBron James for two years in high school, and the Dukes matched a program record for victories set in 1953-54, when Dambrot's father, Sid, played for Duquesne.

The last time Duquesne won the A-10 and went to the NCAA tournament was in 1977, when future NBA All-Star Norm Nixon and the Dukes beat Villanova in the title game.

Joe Bamisile led fifth-seeded VCU (22-13), which was trying to repeat as A-10 tournament champs, with 20 points.

Jimmy Clark III dropped in two free throws with 21 seconds left to make it a five-point game for Duquesne and Fousseyni Drame hit two more moments later to put the Dukes up 55-48.

A long 3 from Zeb Jackson with 9.9 seconds left gave VCU a glimmer of hope. The Rams fouled Jakub Necas as the Dukes struggled to inbound the ball, but he missed both shots.

Clark made two more from the line with 1.9 seconds left and finally Duquesne fans could celebrate at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Dae Dae Grant led the Dukes with 10 points, all in the first half, and was named the tournament's most outstanding player.

The Dukes were up 15 early in the second half and the ball was in play when the game had to be stopped because some Duquesne confetti colored red, white and blue -- intended for the postgame celebration -- fell from a section of the rafters. Most of it landed on press row courtside -- CBS play-by-play man Kevin Harlan had to pull some off himself and partner Dan Bonner -- with a bit making it onto the side of the court. The game was delayed about three minutes for cleanup.

Maybe the premature celebration for Duquesne tempted fate, because the Dukes went more than five minutes after the streamers fell without scoring. Duquesne started the second half 1-for-15 from the field

Bamisile made a pull-up jumper off a fast break with 6:49 remaining to cut the Dukes' lead to 42-39.

Duquesne finally found some offense to hold off the Rams, and Necas made a 3 from the wing with 4:35 left to push the lead to 49-41.

Jackson hit a 3-pointer for the Rams with 2:12 remaining to cut Duquesne's lead to 49-46 and after a forcing a turnover, Bamisile made two free throws to cut it to one with 1:34 left.

In March 2020 instead of going to the A10 basketball tournament in Brooklyn, me and my friend Jim went for a bike ride on the C&O Canal. 

We’d made the plans over dinner in late February.COVID was in the news before we left but wasn’t a thing. It was a reason to maybe not got to New York, but whatever.

On the 2nd or 3rd day we met some VCU kids on the trail on spring break who were stoked to get an extra week off all of a sudden. My wife texted me while we’re out there that my son’s school was closed for the rest of the week. 

My phone blew up with a bunch of apocolytic headlines and when we got back to Cumberland they were getting ready for St. Patrick's Day and that felt weird. Next week I’m heading out to ride that same route and then some and am so keenly aware of the then and now.

Virginia Commonwealth: 2022-23 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Champions

NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen DeLoach had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and top-seeded VCU beat second-seeded Dayton 68-56 on Sunday to win the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in eight years.

Ace Baldwin added 16 points and seven assists, sending the Rams (27-7) to the NCAA Tournament with a nine-game winning streak and a title that has often alluded them during an otherwise impressive run of consistency.

VCU had played in the A-10 final six times from 2013-21, winning just once in 2015 when it beat Dayton.

DaRon Holmes II tried to carry the Flyers (22-12) to their first A-10 title since 2003 and first NCAA bid in six years. Holmes had 28 points and 16 rebounds, but didn't get enough help in the second half. The 6-foot-10 sophomore was named the tournament's most outstanding player, averaging 22 points in three games at Barclays Center.

The Rams and Flyers split two regular-season games, decided by a total of three points. The rubber match was more of the same.

The Flyers bolted to a 10-point lead early in the second half, but Baldwin tied it at 47 with a 3 with 11:50 left in the second half and the Rams slowly edged away from there.

VCU converted three straight second-chance opportunities into seven points in the final 3 1/2 minutes, with DeLoach's work on the offensive glass spurring the effort. Brandon Johns muscled in a layup that gave the Rams a 65-56 lead with 1:57 left.

A day after Dayton's Toumani Camara went 12 for 13 from the floor in the semifinals against Fordham, he got into foul trouble and went scoreless in the first half against VCU. He fouled out with six points and six rebounds.

The 6-9 Mustapha Amzil stepped up to pair with Holmes to wear out the Rams inside. The two bigs combined to shoot 10 for 14 from the floor and score 29 points as Dayton took a 36-30 lead at halftime.

BIG PICTURE

The Atlantic 10 is all but certain to be a one-bid league in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.

Typically one of the strongest mid-major conferences, the A-10 put six teams in the NCAA field in 2014 to cap a run of three years in which it had a total of 15 bids.

Dayton was 28-2 and on its way to being one of the top seeds in the 2020 NCAA Tournament before March Madness was cancelled by the pandemic.

But the conference has slipped over the past couple of seasons, putting only two teams in the NCAAs the last two seasons. And last season the A-10 needed a championship game upset by Richmond over Davidson to get that second team in via its automatic bid.

UP NEXT

Dayton: The Flyers haven't been in the NCAA Tournament since a run of four straight appearances from 2014-17. They'll hope for an NIT bid.

VCU: The Rams are back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021 and 10th time since 2011.
