A Scavenger Hunt in Paris
After thirteen days, our visit to Paris is finally coming to a close. For our final activity as a group, we split up into teams and navigated our way through the streets of Paris. Ryley, Jason, and I went to eight different locations all around the city and did a little research about the places we stopped at.
Gare Saint-Lazare
Gare Saint-Lazare is a beautiful, yet overwhelming train station which was often painted by Claude Monet, as well as Édouard Manet, and Gustave Caillebotte. It was originally built between 1842 and 1843 by the request of Marie-Amélie. The passenger hall was renovated in May 2012 into a three story shopping mall. It was very interesting and fun to experience the juxtaposition between the original train station and its contemporary renovations.
Saint Germain des Pres
Saint Germain des Pres is Paris’ oldest church, believed to hold a relic of the cross that Jesus was crucified on. Yet, it has survived Viking raids and the French Revolution. Its tall, Romanesque tower continues to be a symbol for the neighborhood surrounding the church. When we arrived today, half of the entrance was under construction, which was a little disappointing but obviously understandable for a church that has existed since the 6th century.
Saint-Étienne-du-Mont
Saint-Étienne-du-Mont was first built in 510 to honor the apostles Peter and Paul. Many additions were added on to the church due to a steadily increasing population between the 15th and 17th centuries. As such, the church variates between gothic and renaissance styles. It also houses relics of Saint Genevieve which we were lucky enough to witness today. We walked up to a lateral chapel near the altar and studied the decorative golden sarcophagus filled with her relics. In this small space, various paintings dedicated to her were fixed on the walls and candles could be lit to honor her.
Saint-German l'Auxerrois
Saint-German l'Auxerrois is a Catholic church that was founded in the 7th century. It was rebuilt several times and today is in a mix of Romanesque, Rennaissance, and Gothic styles. The Gothic style is especially apparent to me. This church seems like a quiet haven within the bustling city.
Musée de l'Homme
Musée de l'Homme is an anthropology museum in Paris established in 1937. The museum serves as a research center under the Muséum National d'Historie Naturelle. The view from this location is spectacular as you overlook the major hub of the city and get an up-close look at the jewel of the city, the Eiffel Tower.
Le Pont Alexandre III Bridge
Le Pont Alexandre III Bridge crosses Le Seine and is known for being the most extravagant bridges in all of Paris. It was built between the years of 1896 and 1900. It was opened to the public at the 1900 World Fair. Today, its grandeur still takes you aback. I can still remember this bridge from our boat tour on the Seine one of our first days here in Paris.
Galerie Véro-Dodat
Galerie Véro-Dodat, built in 1862 served as a shelter for the upper class to shop, socialize or eat on rainy days. The area became a cultural phenomenon as a place for activities during the filling years.
Église Saint-Sulpice
Delacroix painted “Jacob Wrestling With The Angel” and “Heliodorus Driven from the Temple” in 1854 to 1861. This was towards the end of his life which served as Delacroix’s spiritual testimony as his life began to close.
