Sara's Big Review of Found Footage Horror Films You've Probably Never Seen
Tired of googling "found footage movies" and being told to watch Blair Witch or V/H/S again? Already watched all the highly recommended “obscure” films? Me too! I have trundled through the depths of Tubi and The Found Footage Critic to find some stuff that you've probably never heard of before. Now you too can reap the benefits of my obsession with this curated list of hidden gems!
The list is in no particular order, but there will be a secondary list of "honorable mentions" at the end, for movies that I feel don't quite fit the genre or I can only half-recommend.
Accessibility note: Tubi is great about including closed captions/subtitles, so most of these have full subs. I’ll make a note of any entries that have no or limited subs.
Death of a Vlogger
A vlogger accidentally captures paranormal activity on film and goes viral. He teams up with a popular (and possibly fraudulent) ghost hunter to ride the wave of his recent fame. This one is set up mockumentary style rather than solely found footage.
A lot of found footage is more about scares than story, but this is one of the few films I watched with a genuinely compelling story arc. Without spoiling too much, I had some real trouble guessing the ending of this one. It's a fun ride and there's some good scares. There's also some novel camera shots, like a "360" video that's been edited for a flat viewing experience.

Rorschach
Two skeptics meet up with a single mom and her daughter to investigate the supposed hauntings they’ve been experiencing in their home. Imagine if Paranormal Activity was filmed by someone actively trying disprove the ghost instead of just catching it in action.
I’ll admit this one feels almost directly targeted at me, as a diehard skeptic. It’s a fun perspective to approach the story from and while a few other movies I watched did this, this one felt the best executed. Not terribly scary but pretty believable, which is my favorite trait in found footage!
Accessibility note: no subtitles, only auto-cc.

(Bonus: if you like this concept but prefer aliens to ghosts, check out Case 347. It was pretty good but didn’t personally appeal to me.)
Hollows Grove
Did you like Grave Encounters? Great news! This one has a similar premise - fake as hell ghost hunters show up to film their show and get a real haunting instead.
I won’t pretend this one is offering anything more than a carnival ride of scares. But they’re pretty competent scares, and at points the acting is genuinely impressive.

Catskill Park
What if Blair Witch was about aliens and had the budget and special effects of a Sy-Fy Channel Original Movie? That’s Catskill Park.
The actors are all giving off “small time actor doing their absolute best for their highlight reel” vibes, which I actually found kind of charming. And there’s a couple of scenes that genuinely impressed me with how they were shot and the energy the actors brought. I didn’t necessarily find it scary, but it was definitely interesting.

The Andy Baker Tapes
A high-strung, quick to anger YouTuber meets his eerie, awkward half-brother for the first time. They promptly go on a road trip together.
This is the only psychological thriller I watched that was actually executed well. The tension in this one is absolutely on par with more popular found footage thrillers like Creep. I think if I had to give someone just one recommendation from this list, it’d probably be this one.

The Unknown Visitor
This is one of the few I watched a trailer for before watching, and I was pretty sure it would probably make this list based on the premise alone.
This one’s a pretty good little ghost story... told entirely through a stationary doorbell cam. This is arguably a movie that shouldn’t work without some pretty smart finessing, but it’s honestly pretty effective! It’s also the shortest watch on the list, so it’s great if you’re looking for just a quick spooky movie.

Honorable Mentions
Bed Eater: The Movie
I don't know what the fuck this was. It isn't horror, that's for sure. But it sure as fuck was weird.
Bed Eater is a "successful" "blogger" (and also a real Instagram account which exists) who posts pictures of herself eating in bed. Daniel is a film student who is enamored with her work and wants to film the process of making her final post.
If that sounds like some dumb shit, that's because it is. As a former art school kid, I innately understood every single character in this.
I could not find a trailer for this movie when I googled it. What I found instead was the entire film.
Accessibility note: no subtitles.
watch the whole thing on Vimeo
#Screamers
An up-and-coming video streaming site gets an anonymous submission and react as though they've never seen a screamer video before. After uploading it, it goes viral, and they become determined to track down the submitter to pay them to make more videos.
Okay, look. I'm not going to lie, this one is silly, a little dull in the middle, and ALL of the scares are literally just screamers. But the fake-website-talk and random hacking scene are REALLY funny. The actors really put on their best "Sillicon Valley weirdos" impressions.
trailer  (WARNING THE TRAILER STARTS WITH A SCREAMER) | available for free on Tubi
The Last Broadcast
Did you really enjoy Lake Mungo? Replace that movie’s troubled teen with a cast of local celebrities and the themes of loss and family with the theme of levels of deception in media and you’d get The Last Broadcast. They have very similar vibes and structures. It really kept me hooked the whole way through.
This one hurts me to put on the honorable mentions, because I genuinely enjoyed most of it. However, the ending makes such a baffling and abrupt tonal/editing shift that I can’t really recommend it without including that as a caveat.
trailer | available for free on Tubi
Deprivation
Three dudes drive up to a cabin in the middle of the woods to film an experiment where they stay awake for 7 days.
For a movie without a lot of actual scares, this one sure had me on edge! The three stars do a pretty believable job of playing off each other. Once the deprivation sets in, it’s hard to tell who might snap and what’s real or not.
It’s in the honorable mentions for the same reason as the last entry. Why do these otherwise competent filmmakers not know how to end a movie???

2019 Ford Ranger First Test: Old Dogs and New Tricks
The shiny, black 2019 Ford Ranger idled up, but I could smell the brakes from across the parking lot. The window rolled down, and from inside came the determination I was expecting, not the one I was hoping for.
“They spent an entire afternoon on chassis dynamics, did they?” testing director Kim Reynolds asked, rhetorically.
Uh, oh.
Kim learned in one figure-eight test what I’d been hoping  for a week wasn’t true. The new Ranger is never settled. Its body is always moving, and as a result, so is yours. Bouncing up and down, tossed side to side, thrown forward or back into the seat. And that’s the Lariat model. We drove the FX4 off-road model, as well, and it was even worse. Entering a driveway at an angle was guaranteed to send your head flying toward the door window like that viral video of the people in the speedboat getting tossed like ragdolls. You constantly feel like a buoy in rough seas. I actually crawled under the truck to verify that A) it had anti-roll bars, and B) they were connected (yes and yes). The Lariat is better, yes, but as features editor Christian Seabaugh put it, “If the FX4 is a 2/10 in ride quality, the Lariat is a 5/10. At least the Lariat doesn’t make me carsick.”
“The Ranger, being the newest truck on the market, somehow manages to feel the oldest and least refined,” road test editor Chris Walton said. “It feels like a ’90s F-150.”
This is the company that builds the F-150 Raptor, a truck that charges across deserts floating like a classic Lincoln. It’s a company we awarded Truck of the Year in 2017 and 2018 for the excellent F-Series Super Duty and F-150, respectively, with little deliberation required. Trucks are what Ford does best … most of the time. To say the Ranger’s ride, handling, and noise/vibration/harshness are disappointing is to say the Super Bowl is a football game. You can improve it marginally by putting weight in the bed, but with Ford pitching this as a “lifestyle” truck, I have to wonder how many owners are going to haul anything but air.
That out of the way, the 2019 Ranger isn’t all bad. Some enthusiasts scoffed when Ford announced the only U.S. engine would be the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo-four, but Ford made the right call. Turbo lag is nearly nonexistent, and the low- to midrange torque makes the truck feel quicker than it is. Whether daily driving or doing work, you’re never worried it won’t have enough guts. The 10-speed auto is generally a good transmission, but it gets confused easily in stop-and-go traffic, resulting in clunky downshifts. The automatic engine stop/start system is quick and smooth, as is the transmission in Sport mode.
The objective numbers mostly attest to this for the Lariat model we instrumented. Hitting 60 mph from a stop takes 6.8 seconds, perfectly acceptable despite being nearly half a second behind a Chevrolet Colorado V-6. A 15.2-second standing quarter mile at 91.3 mph means getting on the freeway is no chore, though you’ll still be chasing that Chevy. Things look just as good in the handling data, despite Reynolds’ subjective opinion that it’s “really bad at the limit.” He continued: “You can explain some of this away by pointing at the tires, but the truck’s damping is very absent. There’s lots of roll but too much bounding after that.” Still, it pulled 0.75 average g on the skidpad, just behind the Colorado’s 0.78 g. The Ranger was even closer on the figure-eight course, completing a lap in 27.7 seconds at 0.61 g average, just a smidge behind the Colorado’s 27.6-second lap at 0.63 average g.
Braking likewise looks good on paper. The Ranger actually out-braked the Colorado from 60 mph, 127 feet to 128. Had the brakes not been stinking to high heaven and the tester’s notes not read “big delay between pedal hit and actual slowing, as braking begins at the max dive angle—like taking up all the slack first,” it would’ve been at least one decisive victory for the Blue Oval.
The brake dive is just another reminder this is an old truck designed for a different market. Originally introduced in 2011 for countries with rougher roads and no full-size pickups, the Ranger was meant to be an old-fashioned workhorse, not an American “lifestyle” truck. The steering is slow and over-boosted, requiring constant corrections through a long corner. The idle is rough, and the mechanical cooling fan is as loud as a semi truck’s. The tailgate is completely undamped and unassisted. Old-school.
Put it to work, though, and it starts to make sense. Like I said, a load in the bed or a trailer on the hitch settles the body down somewhat and doesn’t faze the engine much. The interior of the bed is wide, swallowing more cargo than the 4-inch-narrower Colorado’s, and it offers a handy extra set of tie-downs just behind the wheelwells in addition to the usual four corners. Ford has taken the mantle of best-in-class payload and towing by small margins, but those extra safety margins count for something. The ground clearance is reassuring out in the back 40, but it does mean the bed floor is high, and the bed rails are high enough I can’t reach the bottom of the bed standing next to the truck as I can on the competitors. Work is what this truck is meant for, and what it does best.
Climb into the cabin, and you’re reminded of that singular focus. The dashboard looks nothing like an F-150’s but rather like a more upright version of the Focus’, also designed by engineers outside the U.S. The dash-mounted power mirror control looks straight out of 1996, and the climate control buttons are small and mounted at the bottom of the dash where you won’t be pressing them with work-gloved hands like you can in an F-150. The rear bench is the only one on the American market (midsize or full-size) that isn’t split folding, so everyone and everything needs to get out if you need something from under the back seat. Not that you’ll be storing much under there, as there are only two little cubbies good for a few ratchet straps, maybe a ball hitch, and not much else. To be fair, though, the Honda Ridgeline is the only truck in this class that gives you a flat rear floor if you fold the seat up, but others offer more storage space than Ford.
Look closer, though, and you’ll find extreme modernity hiding in plain sight. The 2019 Ranger offers standard collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and a backup camera, and it can be outfitted with lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, rear parking sensors that are heinously loud, adaptive cruise control, navigation, and the only blind-spot monitor in the class that can extend to cover a trailer. Then there’s Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Waze, and Alexa compatibility, plus built-in Wi-Fi. You also get more USB ports than the competition, plus you can get a 110-volt power outlet in the rear cabin and one in the bed.
The new Ranger is a great truck if you want an old truck with modern technology and fuel economy, and many truck guys say they want that. More power to them. If you’re getting out of a 25-year-old truck and into this one, it’ll be an upgrade. The reason we’re so down on the Ranger is because Ford completely oversold the differentiation between this truck and the world market version. To hear the Blue Oval tell it, the U.S.-market Ranger is practically an all-new truck with all-new sheetmetal, an all-new powertrain, and all-new technology. Although that’s all technically true, it’s clear most of the new stuff was a necessity for American crash and emissions compliance, not a fundamental redesign to suit American tastes and expectations. It’s a placeholder filling a gap in the product lineup until the next-generation truck arrives in a few years, designed with input from American product planners. That’s not a bad thing, but it’s not what we were promised, either. You can absolutely teach an old dog new tricks, but you can’t expect it to perform like a puppy.

Get Shocked with a Clip from THE DARKEST NOTHING: PARAPHRENIA
Open a private tab on your browser and check out this clip from upcoming psychological thriller, The Darkest Thing: Paraphrenia! There’s no nudity or anything, but you don’t want your work computer to know that you’ve been visiting the… Dark Web.
Written and directed by Filip Halo and shot on location in Germany, The Darkest Nothing: Paraphrenia tells the story of Judy, a mental patient with a fixation on dark and violent images. She’s obsessed with the Dark Web, a term for the parts of the internet where anything goes. Her psychiatrist, William, seeks to treat her with a sort of immersion therapy. Judy will have to piece together what she learns from this and her own past to unravel a mystery.
I know what you’re thinking, and don’t worry. I already looked up Paraphrenia on Wikipedia. It’s a mental disorder that’s like being paranoid, but without changing the patient’s personality or intelligence.
Based on the clip above and the film’s teaser trailer, it seems like The Darkest Nothing: Paraphrenia has some shades of Saw and V/H/S Viral, but with one of the six drummers from Slipknot running the show. That sounds super interesting, and I can’t wait to see more.
Details on the film are scarce, but based on everything available, this is going to be a psychological thriller that’s heavy on the “psychological.”
When I was in college, I took a class called Writing for Digital Media. The professor, who loved TED Talks, always talked about the scariest place on the internet, The Dark Web. He said that The Dark Web was where you could go to hire hitmen or buy drugs. One day, the girl who sat next to me typed “how can I get to the dark web” into Google. I guess I admire her boldness. Most of the class was logged into Facebook, so at least she was paying attention to the lecture.
For links that you *can* trust, check out the film’s website, Facebook, and IMDb pages. For more information on The Darkest Nothing: Paraphrenia, including a release date when it’s announced, keep your homepage locked right here.

‘Wonder Woman’ gets the chuckle-worthy Honest Trailer we all knew was coming
BTW
Were you so blown away by the competent storytelling and female empowerment of Wonder Woman that you kind of forgot about the not-so-great parts? Well Honest Trailers isn’t about to let that shit slide.
The movie-skewering YouTube series panned the film’s unmemorable villains, fuzzy grasp of history, and awkward accents, while acknowledging it’s also the best part of the DC Extended Universe—by far.
It also wryly addressed Wonder Woman‘s role in ending the absurdly long absence of female-led superhero films following poorly crafted failures like Cat Woman and Elektra.
“Studios doubted a female-led superhero movie could succeed,” says the Honest Trailers voiceover. “Now, Patty Jenkins bravely asks the question, ‘What if a female-led superhero movie wasn’t absolute garbage from beginning to end and had a powerful message for girls?’”
What if, indeed.
Gal Gadot’s Diana will be back in Justice League on Nov. 17. At that point we’ll find out if DC and Warner Bros. learned a thing or two about how Wonder Woman succeeded, and where its previous films went very, very wrong. If it turns out to be another Batman v Superman-level disaster, at least you can look forward to a deliciously savage Honest Trailer to follow.
