Caught In Her Eyes
As promised in the previous post, here is the character sketch or introductory story of Anna Marie Lee
Anna Marie glanced at her watch as the bus turned left towards Uxbridge Road. It was 7:50 PM, just in time for a late dinner once they reached their drop-off point. Taking out her mirror and lipstick for a touch up, she tsked when she saw her reflection. Her strawberry blond hair looked flat and lifeless from the long ride. She quickly plied on a layer of red on her lips then tucked the items away. Using the dark windows as a mirror, she fluffed up her pixie hair as best as she could. Satisfied, she stood up, grabbed the mic from the overhead storage, and faced the passengers of the bus.
With a crisp clear voice, Anna Marie said in fluent Chinese, “My dear travelers, in just a few minutes, our tour will finally come to an end. As gratitude for choosing our company, allow me to share one last fun fact.” She paused for effect and then pointed her index finger upwards. “Did you know that Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II actually needs permission from the Lord Mayor before she can enter the City of London?” Her eyes looked left and right as sounds of wonder and disbelief arose from within the bus. “Believe it or not, according to the royal website, the citizens of London have the privilege of preventing the Sovereign from entering the streets since ancient times.” Anna Marie closed her eyes with satisfaction as the bus filled with excited voices.
Turning to check the front window, Anna Marie’s smile grew with excitement as she saw Westfield Shopping Centre rising up on the horizon. She couldn’t wait to enter Angels and Devils and order a tall glass of heavenly Kahlua, her usual reward after each satisfactory project. Taking a big breath to compose herself, she faced the travelers and advised them to remain seated as the bus made a turn to enter the mall's bus bay. She provided suggestions and recommendations for different pubs, clubs and eateries the travelers might want to visit as well as enjoy London’s exuberant night life should they wish to.
The bus finally staggered to a stop and everyone prepared to depart. One by one, she ticked names off her clipboard as each one alighted the bus until none were left but her and the driver. As per customary, Anna Marie quickly checked each row of seats to make sure nothing and no one else had been left behind, that done, she promptly gathered her belongings and stepped off the bus.
The moment she reached a safe place on the curb, she placed her overnight bag on the hard granite floor and took a deep breath to stretch and relax her stiff muscles. A finger suddenly tapped her right shoulder, followed by a heavily accented voice. “Hey Anna Marie.”
She looked to her right and met the hazel brown eyes of Terrence Chan, the lone soloist of the group. Anna Marie smiled and said in Chinese, “Hey Terrence, what’s up? Did you forget something on the bus?” Terrence shook his raven black head with a smile, “No Anna Marie, I hadn’t left anything. I just wanted to say thank you for the amazing tour. I really enjoyed your periodical fun facts” Rather than speak in Chinese, Anna Marie was quite surprised to hear him respond in perfect English, despite the heavy Asian accent. She blinked her momentary surprise away, smiled and responded in English “You’re welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed them.”
Terrence nodded and said, “I certainly did. I must say though, that even after hearing you speak fluent Mandarin for the past 36 hours or so, it still amazes me that you can speak our language in such perfect tones. How is it that you can speak so fluently?” Anna Marie smiled at his honest curiosity as she explained how she grew up in a household where speaking to her dad in Chinese, and her mom in Spanish was a must and how that started her passion for language and culture.
With wide amazed eyes, Terrence blurted out, “So you’re what they must call a polyglot! Are there any other languages you can speak fluently in?” Anna Marie couldn’t help but giggle. How many times does it make now? that her multilingual skills amazed the people she met in her part-time job as a tour guide? And asked that very same question?!
The sudden gust of spring breeze stopped Anna Marie’s silly thoughts and brought her back to reality. There they were, still standing outside the mall, chatting in the cool night air. Taking a deep breath to recompose herself and then met Terrence’s eyes as she said, “Actually, I am also well versed in French.”
Terrence’s already wide eyes widened even further as he exclaimed, “Wow! Fantastic! Amazing!” Visibly shaken with surprise, he took a deep breath and said in a seemingly calm voice, “I’m sorry to take up so much of your time, but by any chance, do you have any plans after this? I’d like to have a chance to discuss a possible job offer.”
“What kind of offer?”, she asked.
“Interpreter and translator.” he answered.
“Hmm.. interesting. Unfortunately, I already have a full time job as a translator, tour guiding is just something I do on the side for fun, and extra cash.”
“I see. Hmm.. “ He looked pensive with his brows scrunched up the way it did. And then suddenly, as if an idea popped into his head, his brows popped up and his eyes cleared up, with a determined voice, Terrence said, “May I invite you to dinner? and maybe some drinks after? I am quite famished from the trip, and I’m sure you must be too?”
Surprised by the sudden invitation, Anna Marie was silent for a few seconds. It was clear to her that Terrence was determined to persuade her to take the job. Flattered by his persistence, she smiled and said, “Actually, I already have plans to go to Angels and Devils, a favorite pub of mine over at Portobello Road. You’re welcome to join me there if you want.” It wouldn’t hurt to hear the details of the job, she added silently. Who knows? She might even get a free meal out of it. The Chinese are notorious for hogging the bill after all, she thought naughtily.
Terrence smiled brightly at the counter invite. “That’s wonderful! I’d be honoured to join you!”
Anna Marie picked up her overnight bag as she said, “Well, what are you waiting for? Let’s go! You probably don’t know the way, so I’ll lead you there.”
Terrence stopped her movement with a touch of his hand on her shoulder as he said, “Actually, I was thinking we could take a cab there. I have a feeling it’d be a pretty long walk to that place.”
Anna Marie blinked with surprise as she said, “You’re right, it is quite far from here on foot.” She took out her phone and checked the bus schedule. “It would seem that the next bus wouldn’t arrive for quite a while either.”
He smiled, “A cab it is then, my treat.” He stretched out his hand and hailed an incoming taxi, he opened the door for her to enter and then followed in after. “Angels and Devils Pub at Portobello Road please”, he told the driver.
A few minutes into the ride, Anna Marie heard Terrence moving in his seat as he said, “Anna Marie, if you don’t mind my asking, there’s something I’ve been curious about since first meeting you yesterday.”
Anna glanced his way and asked, “What is it?”
He leaned closer and said, “It’s your eyes. Your left eye is blue, whilst your right eye is brown. Is it a fashion choice? Or are they naturally that way?”

The Dalek Invasion of Scotland
(This feature appeared in both the Daily Record [Monday 18 November 2013] in truncated form and more fully in the East Kilbride News [Wednesday 20 November 2013]. The original was far longer, and sadly I can’t find the file, but I thought it was still of interest! I went to meet Paul with the Daleks under construction, and took my daughter. She was them and ran off in tears, terrified. She was six!)
THE Daleks are set to invade our television screens again – and their latest conquest plans began in East Kilbride.
To celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who, the BBC have produced a docudrama, An Adventure in Space and Time, charting the creation of Doctor Who through the early years.
The drama is being overseen by Doctor Who’s Paisley-born executive producer Steven Moffat, to form part of the show’s golden anniversary celebrations.
And the production will feature the Doctor’s deadliest enemies, the Daleks, who first fully appeared in the show’s sixth-ever episode.
To ensure the show is as accurate as possible, the BBC needed four Daleks identical to the ones which appeared during the early years – and they’ve been built at Titan Props, based in Kinning Park.
The four Daleks were built at short notice by Paul McNamara, a Greenhills resident, and Brian Quinn, who were commissioned by Dave Arrowsmith, the production designer on the BBC show.
The original Daleks were designed by BBC staff member Raymond Cusick and built by Shawcraft Models in Uxbridge.
Paul, who was a Doctor Who fan until Tom Baker left the role, said: “We didn’t have the original plans, so I went online and found a forum called Project Dalek, which had been created by fans, and got the plans there.
“They must be very talented boys as one of our chippies had a look at the plans, he’s built many a house, but he concluded these plans were mathematically impossible as the Dalek base sections with the balls are wider at the bottom, narrower at the top, and yet it still remains flat.
“But with a wee bit of fettling here and there, we’ve got it to work.”
Creating a Dalek isn’t an easy process, even once you’ve got the base section ready.
Paul said: “Getting the spheres right is something I’m really proud of. The balls in the skirt are actually the same ones that we’ve used for the eye-piece. We ordered them from the Precision Plastic Ball Company.
“They are just clear plastic balls which can be used to make Christmas decorations as they split in half and you can put whatever you like inside them. I was able to spray-paint the inside of them in Ford Olympic blue, which gives a clean finish.
“We then had to rout out all the holes for the balls to fit into, which Robert Douglas from Taigh Mor did, so they would all fit properly.
“For things like the gun, most of them were made from material I just had lying about – I’m a bit of a magpie that way, as I keep everything, you never know when you’ll need it.
“Then for the lights on the dome, I think they were originally from a 1950s London taxi, but I’ve used ping-pong balls. They’re easier to get than bits of an old cab!”
Paul’s work will be scrutinised by millions of Doctor Who fans all over the world – but he’s no stranger to working on international successes.
He said: “I’ve done various jobs through the years. I did a bit of work on Mission: Impossible 2. It wasn’t like I was making specicic action props – they are all machine-made by big engineering companies. We would be installing things like boxes on the walls, with wee twinkling lights on them.
“I was also in the dressing crew for Trainspotting – and I worked on the worst toilet in Scotland. It was one of the best tasks I’d ever had.
“The designer would come in and say it was lacking a wee bit as it wasn’t quite bad enough – to vandalise it a wee bit more. So I’d go in with a hammer and knock off a bit more, then she’d come back and want more as it still wasn’t bad enough. It was great.
“This time, though, we’re making the stars of the show in my eyes. Everyone wants to see the Daleks.”
Paul’s Daleks have to be multi-functional, as not only do they have to appear as they were in the original episodes, they have to double up as the slightly different Mark II models, which appeared in 1964s $e Dalek Invasion of Earth. Then their appearance was slightly modified, with a di#erent eye-stalk, a satellite dish on their back and a larger bumper around the base.
Paul said: “We’ve built the Mark I Daleks, which need to be modified for the Mark II version. We’ve made them with inter-changeable eye-stalks, which can be taken out and a new one slotted in place, and they can sit on the bigger base, which is just screwed on at the bottom. We’ve made the satellite dishes as well.”
He added: “I’m fairly happy with how it’s gone so far. I’ve had a few fans coming through and having a wee look and they’ve all had nothing but positive comments, which is great.”
And they’re already proved their worth, terrifying one six-year-old girl who visited during their construction, reducing her to tears.
Since the Daleks returned from London after filming, Paul has sold two of them.
He added: “I’m a model-maker – I like building and this was a great opportunity I just couldn’t miss.”

End of An Era
The silver Toyota pulled up to the gravelly driveway with a continuous growl against the rough surface of the tyre treads as they rubbed against each other aggressively. The door to the house swung open with haste, and a denim clad figure emerged and swaggered over to the side door of the car. “Uber for Kevin, yeah?” he spoke shakily as he anxiously stepped his ankle high leather boots over the bottom of the doorway into the pit of the seat. “Yeah. Going to Uxbridge Town Centre, mate?” the driver replied whilst his eyes remained firmly locked onto the screen of his phone, sat neatly within the holder against the air vent. Kevin gazed out of the window towards the house as the driver prepared his trip. He wondered what he had let himself in for by arranging this dinner. He nervously replied “Yep” as his vision remained focused on the door from which he had just departed from.
“You going somewhere special then?” asked the Uber driver, trying to earn his five star rating by aggressively attacking Kevin with politeness. As he heard the question leave the driver’s mouth, his eyes rolled to the back of his head for a moment, realising that he had lost the gamble as to which type of human would be driving him to his location. He had a small talker. It was the last thing that he needed before this dinner, already racked with nerves, he had no space within his brain to try and muster up acceptable answers to earn his own five star rating. “Just a dinner with my boyfriend” he uttered begrudgingly as he chewed on his thumb. He looked in the driver’s rearview mirror and witnessed the face of his driver drop as though he had just had a gun pulled on him. It was a reaction that Kevin had become unfortunately accustomed to but did not phase him.
Stress and anxiety working in synchronicity to hoist his eyelids down as he pressed his head against the window and took in the vibrations of the car and allowed himself to enjoy the motor massage as an opportunity to destress. He was fully immersed in all of the sounds of the car, soaking himself into the quiet mumbles of the car radio, until his journey was complete.
Exiting the cab, Kevin lit a cigarette to quiet his nerves and allow him to maturely enter the restaurant without freaking himself out and turning around and going home. He looked through the front wall of the restaurant and saw Luke. He was seated at a table, accompanied only by a bottle of red wine and two glasses. His casual t-shirt and boot cut jeans proved only to Kevin that this dinner was more needed than he cared to admit to himself. He threw his cigarette onto the floor and strolled, stress free, into the restaurant. He walked over to the table and sat down.
“You alright?” Luke asked as Kevin settled into his seat, leaving Kevin overly unimpressed. Immediate disappointment filled his body as he realised that after 5 months of dating, their relationship had become so watered down that he was greeted with such a menial remark. “Yeah, I’m alright. What about you?” Kevin replied in a nonchalant manner as he picked up the table’s bottle of wine and filled both of their glasses to the rim. Luke replied to Kevin’s question with a long explanation, none of which Kevin paid attention to as he became engrossed by the playing of Louis Armstrong’s ‘La Vie En Rose’ which he thought was less than fitting to the situation.
Luke’s glistening grimace glared at Kevin as though he was staring down a grandma whilst hooded in red. His pearly white teeth contrasted with a painful beauty, against his silky caramel skin. “So what about you? What’ve you been up to today then?” Luke asked, checking his phone prior to a grin sprinting across his mouth. “Nothing much, just working really” Kevin shot back sharply. “What was that on your phone?” he interrogated. Luke looked shocked for a second and took a large sip of wine and then fired back, “Oh, it’s just a meme that Chloe sent me. So how was work?”. Kevin took an even larger sip of his wine in a panicky return, losing all manners of defense that he had arrived with. “So it wasn’t a message from another guy on Grindr that you’ve been sleeping with instead of me?” Kevin instantly regretted that the words had left his mouth in such a confrontational way, there was no chance of a mature conversation after that. Luke’s eyes shot open and his jaw nearly clearing the table as it fell to the floor. “What do you mean? What other guy? Come on babe, you don’t actually think I’d be into anyone apart from you?” he reasoned. Kevin scoffed loudly at this rebuttal. Kevin’s leg immediately became transfixed by the spirit of Michael Flatley’s Riverdance as it bounced up and down from fear of the conversation’s outcome. He didn’t want to lose Luke but at the same time, he didn’t want to be taken for a fool.
Luke’s hand touched Kevin’s in a blatant attempt to brush the conversation away from his mind but it was as reluctant as a stain. “Don’t give me that crap. I saw your Grindr profile the other day, and you’ve been working so many ‘later shifts’ and yet when I went to surprise you after work last week, your boss told me that you hadn’t worked in days. What’s happening? If you don’t want to be with me, then don’t be with me. This relationship isn’t a prison, the door is right there if you want to leave” Kevin splurted his words toward Luke in an aggressive frenzy. Luke was stunned. He was mentally weighing up his options and deciding the best way to deal with the issue at hand. The silence had bombarded Kevin with an answer before Luke could muster one up. “Okay, I’m glad that we’re both on the same page” Kevin spoke softly as he stood up and exited the restaurant.
Walking outside of the restaurant, Kevin suddenly felt very cold. His hairs stood erect to the chill in the air. It took the first gust of evening air for Kevin to realise that the jacket he had worn out, sat across from his now ex-boyfriend. A solemn tear slowly edged from his eye toward his chin. He pulled out a cigarette and shakily sparked the lighter, moving the dimly lit flame closer to the cigarette and igniting the end of it. The embers slowly dimmed and glowed with each calming breath of nicotine that he allowed himself as he closed his eyes and centred his energy.
“You always did look sexy when you smoked”. Kevin’s eyes slowly opened, revealing to him a somewhat sympathetic Luke, reaching out to him and extending the black denim jacket to him. Kevin took back the jacket and put it on. “Thanks” he replied. Luke stood against the wall, next to Kevin and leaned on his leg at a perpendicular angle. He pulled out his own cigarette and searched his pockets hopelessly. “You got a light?” he quietly asked. Kevin handed him the lighter without even looking at him. “We’re not going to be able to sort this out, are we?” Kevin voiced his mental realisation as a question to ease the pain of his expected answer. Luke softly placed his head on Kevin’s shoulder. “Not whilst you’re being such a hypocrite” he meekly attacked. Kevin stepped away swiftly, throwing Luke off of his balance. “I’ve also seen your profile. Tinder. Grindr. Match. People have sent me screenshots of your profiles for months and I just presumed that you hadn’t deleted them. So yeah, I’ve been going on a few dates with a few guys. None of them even come close to how I feel for you”. Kevin started to sob even more. “This isn’t going to work out. It just won’t. I was only on those apps for fun, I just liked seeing what was happening and judging different people. It was never anything more, but the fact that you didn’t feel secure enough to ask me about it. We clearly don’t trust each other enough and after this, I don’t know if I want to”. Kevin started to wipe his tears from his eyes as Luke wrapped his arms around Kevin and softly said “I know”.
The two of them stood for a while, embracing each other for the final time. Their warmth being shared between the duo as the rain started to drizzle around them. For a moment, unbeknownst to each other, they both smiled as they acknowledged the lessons they had learned from each other and enjoyment that they had received from their time together.

Tonight, relatives of Spencer Kurash join families across the UK to speak of their horror as our death toll passed 1,000.
Black cab driver Spencer, 56, died after bravely deciding to carry on ferrying people around London.
His student daughter Natasha, 18, told us: “It could have been an infected passenger who handed over money. It’s just devastating.”
Spencer, a cabbie for 22 years and a Spurs season ticket holder, self-isolated when his symptoms developed after his last shift on March 18.
His wife of 19 years, Esther, tried in vain to resuscitate him when his symptoms worsened at home in Chigwell, north east London, on Wednesday and the family dialled 999.
Paramedics worked on Spencer for an hour but could not save him. Tests will be carried out to confirm the virus.
Today we bring you more victims on Britain’s terrible list of tragedies and the thoughts of their loved ones.
