How To Balance User Needs & Business Goals
Have you ever had a design requirement from a client or business that went against UX best practices? How do you identify business goals and user needs in such situations?
Many designers still use the phrase – “The customer is always right” and believe pushing back is the answer. No doubt, UX designers should stand for their user objectives. After all, it is a part of their jobs. But, fighting for user needs without showing an understanding of business priorities can put their careers at risk.
Tumblr media
Certainly, a company’s success is ruled by customers’ experience & revenue. That is why a smart product designer must start each work by knowing all the business priorities. Product Development
Tumblr media
Product development and manufacturing are often conflated, yet they entail vastly different processes.
Manufacturing involves predictable, repetitive tasks, while product development encompasses unique, evolving activities.
Understanding and managing the changes inherent in product development is crucial for successful outcomes.
Phases of Product Development
Product development in the device realm involves several steps including:
Conceptualization
Design
Development
Manufacturing
Marketing of safe, effective devices meeting user needs and requirements.
Associated changes in product development include alterations in design, suppliers, materials, processes, and target markets. Effective change management is key to navigating these complexities.
Preparedness is paramount in handling change. Understanding the product development lifecycle is foundational. This lifecycle, depicted below, illustrates how customer requirements inform design inputs and device development, with ongoing risk assessment and review at each stage.
If you wish to learn about the complete medical device development process, we highly recommend you check out our guide on End-to-End Medical Device Development.
Through this lifecycle, companies can:
- Identify user needs and assess competitor products. - Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. - Mitigate risks throughout development. - Ensure the end product meets customer satisfaction.
Product development continues post-regulatory approval, extending into market release. Elexes offers regulatory, clinical, nonclinical, and quality expertise, supporting projects from inception to marketing authorization. Our approach facilitates seamless navigation of changes, ensuring regulatory and commercial success.

Flask Login and Principal - current_user is Anonymous even though I'm logged in
I'm using Flask Login and Principal for identity and role management. My needs are described straight out of the docs. My code is here:
@identity_loaded.connect_via(app)def on_identity_loaded(sender, identity): # Set the identity user object identity.user = current_user # Add the UserNeed to the identity if hasattr(current_user, 'get_id'): print 'current_user ' + str(current_user.get_id()) identity.provides.add(UserNeed(current_user.get_id)) # Assuming the User model has a list of roles, update the # identity with the roles that the user provides if hasattr(current_user, 'roles'): if current_user.roles: for role in current_user.roles: identity.provides.add(RoleNeed(role.name))
In my login code I do this:
identity_changed.send(current_app._get_current_object(), identity=Identity(user.user_id)
On login, the signal fires as expected. On each subsequent page load, the current_user is anonymous and doesn't have the user id yet all @login_required functions behave as if the user is logged in. Flask login knows that the user is logged in but for some reason the current_user is inconsistent.
Am I missing an essential point of configuration somewhere?

Describing him as a “very big cat” she said that he is “very, very nervous around people”. She said: “We don’t think he has ever had […]

87% of Danes want to avoid meat-free meals
Offered pasta with tomato sauce, meat, and/or vegetables, the vast majority of Danes in a recent study declined to go vegetarian.
The researchers repeatedly asked participants to choose from a range of pasta dishes, some with meat, some with veggies, and some with both.
Of the group, 87% would, by their own account, opt out of vegetarian fare and choose a plate of both meat and vegetables if they had the choice. And, the majority of respondents would go so far as to choose a meat-only dish over a meat-free one.
“Our study suggests that most of the survey’s participants would often opt out of meat-free days at home or vegetarian dishes in the canteen. However, it is important to emphasize that this same large group of Danes prefers a combination of meat and vegetables,” says Tove Christensen, coauthor of the study and an associate professor in the University of Copenhagen food and resource economics department.
There are, however, still plenty of significant opportunities for people to scale up on veggies and scale back on meat, according to coauthor and associate professor Sigrid Denver.
“These results demonstrate that the vast majority of Danes would prefer to strike some sort of balance between meat and vegetables. If people want to consume less meat, we might need to consider reducing meat portions across meals, while ramping up on vegetables, as opposed to preparing completely vegetarian meals,” says Denver.
That might mean shredding some extra carrot into the meatballs or slicing an additional tomato into a pasta salad instead of counting on people to opt for 100% vegetarian meals.
Specifically, the study finds that the average Dane prefers a meal with twice as much meat as vegetables.
There’s a way to go to before the average Danish consumer nears or meets with the Danish Health Authority’s official recommendation of a meal composed of 20% animal products, 40% vegetables, and 40% bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes.
Only 13% of respondents would rather have a pasta dish of vegetables only, rather than one of meat only. This same group is also the one willing to pay more for organic.
The study appears in the Journal of International Food & Agribusiness Marketing.
The study is based on a 2017 survey of 508 Danes as part of the Userneeds consumer panel. It is representative of gender and partially representative in relation to national regions, where it covers five regions and three age groups.
The study is part of the OrgHealth project, which the Ministry of Environment and Food’s Green Development and Demonstration Programme funds. The program, Organic RDD 2.2, is a Danish research and innovation program that addresses organic food systems.

Hver sjette erhvervschauffør kigger på mobilen
Hver sjette erhvervschauffør kigger på mobilen
Kilde: Presse meddelelse
