Hannibal Fic WIP - Mystery Neighbor AU
Riding the high of completing Wild Hunt, I'm here to thrust another WIP upon ye. Behold, my first Hannibal fic, and despair!
Tagging the muses: @subtlybrilliant, @tindragon09, @prommethium
---
Hannibal noticed something was off the moment he pulled into his driveway. Out of caution, he remained in the Bentley, engine idling, as he studied the exterior of his home in the waning summer light.
The front doors were closed and the windows he could see looked intact. The back of the townhouse was obscured by the eight foot wooden privacy fence but he didn’t notice any signs of disruption from his point of view. Of course his security system would have alerted him to any unwanted entry, but Hannibal Lecter was nothing if not pragmatic. Any criminal worth their salt could easily disable an alarm, even one as expensive as his.
Hannibal sighed and turned to his right, looking instead to the long empty townhouse next to his own. A moment’s reprieve was his goal, a negative to his own home’s exterior to make any differences more apparent.
Then he saw it.
A for sale sign swung gently in the warm breeze.
Hannibal smiled and turned off the car.
The quote “Netherfield Park was let at last” came to mind, though the townhouse to his right held none of the grandeur of the fictitious estate. Hannibal also doubted that a wealthy man in want of a wife would find his way to this particular Baltimore neighborhood anytime soon. And there certainly would not be any grande balls, to his chagrin.
Hannibal chided his caution as he approached the front door. Although he rarely interacted with his neighbors, the prospect of a new one was still exciting. Perhaps they would have a taste for art and music, like he did, and he would see them at gallery openings and operas, nodding to each other over champagne and rocks glasses but never speaking. Maybe they would appreciate fine dining as he did and he could try new dishes out on them if he was feeling adventurous.
Or perhaps they would be new to their wealth and rude, and they would feature in a dish themselves.
***
The next evening, Hannibal returned home with dinner on his mind.
There was a liver he should really use before it was past its prime and he was debating on how to prepare it.  Marinating was best, and it did not bother him to eat late. He was walking towards the door, mentally going through his stock of wine that would pair well with the main course when he heard a creak that made him pause.
Hannibal angled his head towards the door, listening intently for breathing on the other side, when again his gaze landed on the sign in the yard next door.
Sale Pending the attachment underneath swayed.
Well, that was fast.
Hannibal smirked as he let himself into the foyer. Soon, he would have a new neighbor and a new source of entertainment or irritation, at least for a little while.
***
Saturday brought with it slumber and sunshine.
And multiple dogs barking.
The last drove Hannibal from the warmth of his bed out of academic curiosity. He rarely heard dogs in his neighborhood, let alone so close to his house. The dogs of the Baltimore elite were small, to be seen, not heard, and toted around in designer bags.
These dogs sounded larger and multiple.
Hannibal crossed the hall to the guest bedroom which was adjacent to his driveway and looked out.
His neighbor had arrived, in four-legged, frantic glory.

Ratan Tata
Indian business tycoon who turned his family’s Tata Group into a global player, and invested heavily in British industry
Ratan Tata, who has died aged 86, was India’s most celebrated industrialist. He modernised the unwieldy business empire founded by his great grandfather in the 19th century and internationalised it. In the process he spread his interests into western countries, with mixed results.
For the UK, that included the £271m purchase of the Tetley Group in 2000, followed more controversially by the acquisition of the steel company Corus for £6.2bn in 2007. Then, in 2008, Tata, himself a car enthusiast, added the troubled Jaguar Land Rover motor business for a further £1.75bn.
He joined the family firm, Tata Steel, in 1962. Educated in the US, and newly qualified as an architect, the young Tata had, he said, no intention of returning to India. But family ties won out. When his ailing grandmother, Navajbai, who had raised him, asked him to return he did so. He was soon promoted, building his reputation with tough reorganisation, followed by more troubleshooting at the electronics and textile companies.
In 1981, he was made chairman of Tata Industries, and found himself confronting an assortment of separate businesses, with different ownership patterns over which there was little formal control. He made a blueprint for reorganisation, having spent time at the Harvard Business School, but it was rejected after opposition from semi-autonomous bosses.
However, in 1991, the 81-year-old patriarch of the group, JRD Tata, chose him as his successor as the overall chairman. Asked why, he replied: “He has a modern mind.”
Tata soon demonstrated it with a tough programme of reshaping that, against continuing opposition, brought closures, job reductions, and the departure of the heads of the steel, hotel and chemical businesses.
He began to focus more on brands and less on heavy industry, and he benefited from the deregulation of Indian industry championed by Rajiv Gandhi. As part of it, he took the company more heavily into the motor industry. Tata lorries already dominated Indian highways, but now he moved into the car business in line with his own enthusiasms. While always seen as a man of modest habits, he had his own lovingly maintained collection of high-powered and classic cars, and delighted in driving them along Mumbai’s Marine Drive most Sundays.
Tata produced what was called “the first Indian car”, designed by and for Indians, in 1998. Ratan did some of the first drawings himself. The Tata Indica was a success. But when he went further a decade later, and the company conceived the Nano, a tiny saloon described as the world’s most affordable car at a price of about £2,000, the project failed. Such a cheap car was not enticing even to those “on two wheels” whom he hoped to attract.
In 1999 Tata had travelled to Detroit to discuss the sale of the motor business to Ford, only to be asked why his firm had gone into the passenger car business when it clearly knew nothing about it. Later he would turn the tables, buying underperforming Jaguar Land Rover from Ford and reviving it.
With sell-offs and cutbacks, Tata reorganised the group into 98 operating companies from more than 250, reducing the labour force by more than a third. He forged alliances with foreign companies and went into information technology.
Tumblr media
He stepped down in 2012, observing the compulsory retirement rule he had himself introduced, but was still regarded as “chairman emeritus” and was brought back unhappily for a few months when his successor was sacked four years later.
His most shocking day came in 2008, when terrorists took over the Tatas’ Taj Mahal hotel on the front at Mumbai with great loss of life. The company has continued to support staff affected and the families of those who died.
Ratan was born in Mumbai, into the large Parsi Tata family, whose wealth came from a scattered collection of businesses including textiles, hotels, engineering, steel and tea. His father, Naval, had been adopted by the son of the founder, Jamsetji Tata. After Naval and his wife, Soonoo, separated when Ratan was seven, the child was brought up with his younger brother, Jimmy, by his grandmother in a grand Tata mansion in central Mumbai.
Aged 17 he was sent to the US to attend Riverdale Country school in New York City, from where he entered Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He studied engineering before switching to architecture, graduating in 1959. He worked as an architect for a while in Los Angeles before returning to India, and Tata Steel.
In his 20 years at the helm, Tata’s sales grew by 22% annually and its international revenues rose from a quarter to 58% of the total, while Tata Consultancy Services became Asia’s largest software company.
His British investments have been among his less successful. Corus was bought for an over-the-top £6bn just before the global financial crash devastated the industry. Tata claimed it as “the first big step that Indian industry has taken as a global player”. It was later described by a senior Tata executive as “worthless”. The firm is currently negotiating terms of new investment at Port Talbot, which would be accompanied by hundreds of redundancies, while huge plants on Teesside and Scunthorpe have already been closed or sold for a nominal sum.
Jaguar Land Rover was initially a happier story. Tata’s major investment, including in research and development, made the company for a while the largest foreign investor in British industry. But eight years of profits have been followed by losses since 2018.
Surveying the British scene in 2011, Tata told the Times: “Nobody seems to want to exert the effort to make the UK truly competitive. It’s a work ethic issue. In my experience in both Corus and JLR, nobody is willing to go the extra mile.”
He was a major figure in the international business community, close to US politicians as well as the Indian government, advising the former prime ministers Gordon Brown and David Cameron, and sitting on the boards of multinational institutions.
He was also known as a major philanthropist. Many of the Tata companies were owned through trusts he chaired, and huge sums were provided for medical research and university projects both in India and abroad, particularly in the US, where a number of campuses have buildings bearing his name.
A softly spoken man, renowned for his courtesy, he never married, although he described himself as having come close four times. He was known for living modestly, although his recreations included flying his private jet and driving his collection of expensive cars, as well as a speedboat. He was noted for his love of dogs. The Tata headquarters in Mumbai had kennels and made provision for street dogs, and he was a donor to canine charities. In 2014 he was made GBE.
He is survived by Jimmy, by his stepmother, Simone, a half brother, Noel, and two half sisters, Shireen and Deanna.
🔔 Ratan Tata, businessman, born 28 December 1937; died 9 October 2024

IMAGES: B-1 bombers make a historic visit to Turkey
Turkish Air Force integrates with U.S. bombers on a long-planned mission.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/02/2023 - 12:56in Military
Two U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancers bombers assigned to the 9º Expeditionary Bomber Squadron arrived on Tuesday (10/31) at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, for a historic hot-pit refueling as part of the long-planned bomber task force training mission.
Tumblr media
A hot-pit refueling refers to the tactic of refueling aircraft while the engines are still running. This marks the first time that U.S. Air Force B-1 has been replenished in this way at Incirlik Air Base. The aircraft stayed at the base for less than two hours before leaving for a training mission with the Turkish Air Force.

The Deputy Commander of the Wing of the 39ª Air Base, Colonel Robert Schoeneberg of the U.S. Air Force, and the Chief Command of the Wing of the 39ª Air Base, Chief Sergeant. Kevin Helms greeted the Commander of the 9º EBS, U.S. Air Force Colonel Lieutenant Ryan Stillwell, and the Sub-Commander of the 489º Bombing Group Command, U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Marshall on the flight line.
Tumblr media
The B-1s integrated with the Turkish military, including the KC-135R Asena refuelers and the F-16 Fighting Falcons, for training missions planned well in advance to practice Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) procedures and close air support training missions.
Tumblr media
“Teamwork with our Turkish air force partners has demonstrated the interoperability and professionalism of NATO aviators,” Stillwell said. “Thank you to the 10ª Tank Base and 39ª Wing Team Titan Air Base for their specialized support and hospitality.”
Tumblr media
Incirlik Air Base is one of the largest military facilities in Turkey and its strategic location makes it a center for NATO integration and the defense of NATO's southern flank.
Tumblr media
“We are excited to support and celebrate this historic refueling operation in Incirlik,” Schoeneberg said. "This demonstrates the unique capabilities and strategic positioning of this base. In addition, it highlights for everyone that Turkey is a critical member of the NATO alliance and that Team Titan is open to business."

29th March 1958 saw the death of Sir William Burrell.
William Burrell, the shipping magnate who amassed a giant art collection and then gave it away, is perhaps both one of the best-known names and least-known characters in Scottish philanthropy.
I first  learned of William Burrell through my mum in the early 80’s, he was born into a shipping family and ran the business with one of his brothers, George after his fathers death.
In 1876 William entered the firm at the age of 15, and on his father’s death in 1885 he and his eldest brother George took over the management. the firm was already prospering, but under their shrewd direction it reached a position of international standing in worldwide tramping and in ship management.
The Burrell brothers undoubtedly had the Midas touch. George kept abreast of developments in marine engineering while William specialized in the commercial side. Their fortunes were based on a steady nerve, foresight and breath-taking boldness. The formula was quite simple. In times of depression they would order a large number of ships at rock-bottom prices, calculating that the vessels would be coming off the stocks when the slump was reaching an end. Burrell and Son was then in a position to attract cargoes because it had ships available and could undercut its rivals. Then, after several years of highly profitable trading, the brothers would sell the fleet in a boom period and lie low until the next slump occurred,  it was a simple idea for them and very shrewd, none of their rivals were brave enough to take the risk and the firm went from strength to strength. It was when the firm were at there peak William became one of the most important collectors in Scotland. His interest in art went back to his youth. While still a boy he was already buying pictures, although he used to say in later years that their chief value lay in the frames.
Although it is not known what sparked off Burrell’s love of art, there were plenty of opportunities in late 19th century Glasgow for him to form his tastes. A number of collectors were to be found amongst the wealthy Scottish industrialists and shipowners of the time.
An estimate of Burrell’s early interests can be obtained from his loans to the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901, when he was the largest single lender with more than two hundred works. Their range and scope show that he was already a collector of major standing. They included medieval tapestries, ivories, wood and alabaster sculpture, stained glass and bronzes, Roman glass, 16th and 18th-century Dutch, German and Venetian table glass, silver, furniture and Persian rugs. The paintings are by too many artists to mention here without it looking like a shopping list, but Whistler, Manet and Monticello were among his purchases.
Between 1901 and 1911 little is known of Burrell’s collecting, apart from his acquisition of some fine pictures, including his first Degas. Unfortunately, at the same time he was selling as well as buying, a policy he was to continue even after the sale of the fleet had removed any major financial restrictions on the scale of his spending on art. In 1902, for example, he sent nearly forty pictures for auction, and among those sold were paintings by Daumier and Manet which are now in the United States.
From 1911 until 1957 Burrell kept detailed records of his expenditure in twenty-eight school exercise books. He made almost all the entries himself, except during the last few months when failing eyesight compelled him to delegate the task to others. These purchase books are an invaluable record of the astounding range and scale of his collecting. Although the entries tend to become more detailed as the years go by, the basic format was established on the first page of the first book. There are separate columns for date of acquisition, description, from whom the item was acquired, its price, date of delivery, insurance and whether photographed. The last column is headed “All in Order” and usually has Burrell’s initials.
Burrell was never an easy client. He was strong-minded, liked to haggle over prices and could be very cautious., well what would you expect from a canny Scot! Even dealers with whom he had done business over some years would find him seeking a second opinion on an object they were attempting to sell him. His collection is only bettered by some of the major museums across the British Isles.
Until about 1930 Burrell seems to have been buying merely for his personal enjoyment, with no thought of forming a collection which would be kept together after his death. Until then he continued to sell or exchange paintings, but in the 1930s he formed the idea not only of having a permanent collection but of handing it over to public ownership. Burrell had discussions with a number of interested parties regarding the disposal of the Collection, and eventually, in 1944, it was donated to Glasgow, the city of his birth and centre of his business activities, in the names of himself and and his wife.
A few years later he gave the then Glasgow Corporation £450,000 for the construction of a building in which the Collection was to be housed and displayed. The terms of the Deed of Gift as regards this building, however, presented difficulties. Burrell stated that it should be within four miles of Killearn in Stirlingshire and not less than sixteen miles from the Royal Exchange in Glasgow. He felt that the Collection would appear to best advantage in a rural setting and was also deeply concerned at the harm which could be caused by the high levels of air pollution then prevailing over Glasgow. The councillors and Corporation officials were aware of the problems in, firstly, finding a suitable site and then in administering a museum so far removed from the city, but attempts to persuade Burrell to make his conditions less stringent met with little success. Various sites were considered, but the issue was still unresolved at the time of Burrell’s death. It was only nine years later, in 1967, when Mrs Anne Maxwell Macdonald presented Pollok House and estate to the City of Glasgow, that a site was at last found.
Sadly, he did not live to see them in the gallery in Pollok Park, where they form such an important feature. He died at Hutton Castle on 29th March 1958, at the age of 96.
A design competition for the museum building in 1971 was delayed by a postal strike, allowing time for the eventual winning architect  Barry Gasson. I have no idea why it took so long to actually get it built, but it’s size was maybe a factor. The building is the second largest post war building in Scotland, the abandoned St  Peter’s Seminary at Cardross being the largest. The Burrell Collectioned opened it’s doors in 1983.  So far, more than 1.3 million people have visited exhibitions
The Burrell Collection closed to the public in October 2016 in order to embark on a programme of refurbishment. It was reopened last year, after covid caused delays.

Tell us about yourself.: David Devine is a second-generation Irish-American. Today, the lilt of an Irish brogue touches his heart. A native of San Francisco he was raised across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree for Industrial Engineering & Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley. He worked in Ocean Transportation holding roles in Engineering, Marine Terminal Management, and Sales. He also provided Management Consulting services in Silicon Valley. Having not suffered enough anguish from the corporate world he owned and operated a bicycle store. A prolific technical writer, David began creative writing on a whim with short stories. Having anthology success with Murray, The Disgruntled Reindeer, he would go on to write a novella and a radio play script. Hibernia is his debut novel. He has two daughters. David currently resides near the mist of Niagara Falls with his Grenadian (he swears she sounds Irish) wife. He takes inspiration from Julia Child, Lee Trevino, and W.C. Fields. He is an avid chef. Do not ask for his guacamole recipe. There is none; it’s guacamole. Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?: San Rafael, a suburb across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. We were a San Francisco-Irish family. There was much dry humor in our households. HIBERNIA was greatly affected by my upbringing. The dry humor continues in my current project. Do you have any unusual writing habits? In addition to writing, I am a caretaker and home owner. I do not have the luxury of setting a writing schedule. Sometimes a paragraph is in my head for hours before it hits the keyboard. What authors have influenced you? San Rafael, a suburb across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. We were a San Francisco-Irish family. There was much dry humor in our households. HIBERNIA was greatly affected by my upbringing. The dry humor continues in my current project. Do you have any advice for new authors? Join a writing group with more accomplished writers than yourself. It commits you to completing work and a rising tide lifts all ships. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Don't sweat the small stuff ....It's all small stuff. What are you reading now? Recipes, Assembly Instructions, Pill bottles. What's your biggest weakness? As far as writing is concerned, a weakness, and perhaps a strength, is that I have an engineering background. What is your favorite book of all time? Benjamin Franklin, An American Life, so impressed with all the fields he mastered and his influence on the nascent days of the United States. When you're not writing, how do you like to spend your time? I have little free time and have lost vision to the point where I can no longer participate in many of the sporting activities I would have listed 15 years ago. ...I am an avid chef however (to date no digits lost). Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you? I know I read Dr. Seuss (and I read them over and over to my children), but I would have to say the Encyclopedia Brown books. The logic in solving the mystery appealed to the little engineer. What has inspired you and your writing style? I started creative writing after many years of professional/technical writing. I saw it as a challenge. As to style, my writing is quite reflective of my technical bend and dry sense of humor. What are you working on now? UnCOMMONWEALTH, a modern day Casablanca set in Grenada. This tiny nation has a surprising confluence of international interests. What is your favorite method for promoting your work? Still trying to figure that out. What's next for you as a writer? Write, write, write. Sell, sell, sell. ...As long as I can read the screen (and I do zoom it in), I plan to keep writing novels. How well do you work under pressure? Pressure was trying to learn touch typing on a typewriter with unmarked keys at 13 years old. How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing? The characters set their own tone. If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be? Pay your way. Smile as you go. Leave construction not destruction.
