Can I beat an old dead horse for a moment?
Its been a little over twenty years since I've been a Sailor Moon fan and it still bothers me that Jupiter isn't an outer senshi. The astronomy nerd in me just won't let it go. It also bothers me that she's not one of the most powerful? Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. I think all the other planets could fit inside of it. Its named after Zeus! And she's not one of the most powerful?
I know its the way the story was written. Naoko wanted five characters and she didn't think she was writing more after the dark kingdom arc. But damn its forever going to bother me.

Sailor Moon Crystal Recap: What You Need to Know Before Netflix’s Sailor Moon Eternal
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Sailor Moon is one of the most well-known anime from the last 30 years. Based on a manga that first launched in 1991, the series has been adapted into a beloved 200-episode anime, several films, a live-action drama, and more recently, an anime reboot called Sailor Moon Crystal. And if that legacy weren’t enough, we can now add another film to the franchise: Sailor Moon Eternal.
What Is Sailor Moon Eternal?
As previously mentioned, Sailor Moon Eternal is the latest addition to the Sailor Moon franchise. It’s a two-part anime film based on the Dream arc of the original manga. Despite this, the production has officially dubbed this portion of the Sailor Moon saga the Dead Moon arc, named after the antagonists the Sailor Guardians face.
The film was first announced in 2017 as part of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. It’s meant to be a direct continuation of Sailor Moon Crystal, the anime reboot that concluded its third season in 2016. After some pandemic-related delays, Sailor Moon Eternal hit Japanese theaters in early 2021 before Netflix picked up the films for streaming release a few months later.
How Does Sailor Moon Crystal Connect to Sailor Moon Eternal?
Sailor Moon Crystal is the anime reboot that commemorates the manga’s 20th anniversary. The anime industry loves celebrating anniversaries of its most famous and enduring properties, in case you haven’t noticed. Typically by releasing more anime.
While the original 1990s anime took some liberties with plot and characterization, Sailor Moon Crystal stays true to the original manga. It consists of three seasons totaling 38 episodes, with each season covering a different story arc: Dark Kingdom, Black Moon, and Death Busters. While Season 3—aka the Death Busters arc—ended on a satisfactory note, it set the stage for the film with a solar eclipse that presages the arrival of a major character from the Dead Moon arc.
Think of Sailor Moon Eternal as Sailor Moon Crystal Season 4, if you like.
Do I Need to Watch Sailor Moon Crystal First?
It would probably help. There are many characters, so if you have no familiarity with Sailor Moon at all, you might have a rough time. On top of a sizable main cast, this series loves reincarnation, time travel, and multiple dimensions. Things might get confusing if you’re coming at this franchise as a brand-new viewer.
That said, if you’ve read the original manga, you should be fine.
If you’ve only watched the 1990s anime, you’ll generally be okay. The big caveat here is that some of the characterizations and relationship dynamics are different in Sailor Moon Crystal. For example, Rei Hino, aka Sailor Mars, is more aloof and serious in the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal versus the original anime where she loves chasing boys and constantly fights with Sailor Moon’s heroine, Usagi. But as long as you’re aware of those differences, fans of the first anime series can skip watching Sailor Moon Crystal if they’re short on time.
I’m adventurous and know nothing about Sailor Moon. What basics should I know?
How brave! The biggest thing to know is that the entire series revolves around the concept of Sailor Guardians. Sailor Guardians are teenage girls who are given special powers connected to planets throughout the universe. For the Sailor Guardians protected by planets from our solar system, sometimes the powers are elemental in nature. Other times, the powers are related to classical mythology.
The other major thing to know is that our heroine, Usagi Tsukino, is royalty. She’s the reincarnation of a princess from the Moon Kingdom. That’s right. Sometime in the past, there existed a kingdom on the moon. In the future, she becomes the guardian queen of Earth that ushers it into a sort of golden age. These past and future identities serve as focal points for plotlines throughout the entire series.
Can You Give Me a Sailor Moon Crystal Recap?
As mentioned earlier, Sailor Moon Crystal is divided into three seasons.
Season 1 covers the Dark Kingdom storyline. This arc introduces us to Usagi Tsukino, who discovers she’s both Sailor Moon and the reincarnation of Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. It also introduces us to the inner Sailor Guardians—Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus—who are Sailor Moon’s closest allies. In addition, we meet Usagi’s love interest, Mamoru Chiba, who happens to be the reincarnation of Prince Endymion. Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion had a tragic, star-crossed romance and you better believe that influences their present incarnations. Together, they all fight the Dark Kingdom, which was responsible for the destruction of the Moon Kingdom in the past and wants to take over the Earth in the present.
If Season 1 focuses on preventing a repetition of past tragedies, Season 2 is about averting future annihilation. After the events of the Dark Kingdom arc, Usagi and her friends are living their best, peaceful lives. That changes when Chibi-usa, Usagi and Mamoru’s daughter from the future, appears. She’s traveled back in time to find the means to save her mother. Hot on her heels is the Black Moon clan, who destroyed the future Earth that Chibi-usa came from. The Black Moon arc also introduces us to Sailor Pluto, a Sailor Guardian with the ability to control time.
The Death Busters arc, or Season 3, adapts the Infinity storyline of the manga. Chibi-usa has stayed in the present day to train to be a Sailor Guardian. Here we meet more Sailor Guardians from our solar system: Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. After sacrificing her life in the previous story arc, Sailor Pluto has also incarnated in the present timeline. Along with Sailor Moon and the inner Sailor Guardians, they fight the Death Busters, alien invaders from another dimension. Central to the plot is Hotaru Tomoe, who is the key to the Death Busters’ invasion plans but also happens to be the incarnation of Sailor Saturn, who has the ability to destroy the world.
How Does Sailor Moon Crystal Lead into Sailor Moon Eternal?
After using her abilities, Hotaru has been reincarnated as a baby. Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto leave to raise her as the coolest queer family unit ever. Having completed her Sailor Guardian training, Chibi-usa is ready to return to the future. But before she goes, she accompanies Usagi and Mamoru to watch the solar eclipse. As the moon begins to cover the sun, however, both Usagi and Chibi-usa hear a mysterious bell, setting the stage for Sailor Moon Eternal.
Expect to see all these characters return for Sailor Moon Eternal, along with a whole new set of villains plus one notable ally.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Sailor Moon Eternal streams on Netflix on June 3rd. All 3 seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal are currently streaming on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

“Their invasion of Earth is the greatest threat our solar system has ever faced.” you’re telling me the Death Busters are somehow a bigger threat than both the Dark Kingdom, who destroyed the Moon Millennium, where all the guardians and kingdoms were stronger than the current time & were killed, and the Dark Moon clan, who almost successfully destroyed the Silver Millennium in the future, where Usagi is at her strongest + they likely killed Uranus and Neptune who were also stronger than now? You sure about that? You ACTUALLY sure about that? Like ok, I know Chibiusa going back in time changed the future n stuff, but the Deathbusters were also active before even the Dark Kingdom made their move before the DB did, so the DB should have still acted and been defeated before the Silver Millennium, where the Black Moon clan almost won....the power ratings of the enemies make no sense
So the fact that Mistress 9 needed hearts to stay alive, and then an episode or two later she’s fine, means there are casualties not shown and the guardians did fail to protect some people from dying
lol rip mimete
Telu(?) is cute tho, how long is she gonna survive before they need to actually get on with the Silence plot, cause Mimete didn’t last as long as the other chick before her, or even the other lady before them
oh
she
she fucking died
Telu died in her fucking debut episode. the plot is moving faster than I thought.
The others all died in their debut episodes too rip
what happened to Pharaoh 1 thru 89? and mistresses 1-8?
Oh. I guess Pluto died.
Hmmm I guess the Inner Senshi are using a power similar to the one they used in the future, to create a protective barrier?
damn everyone got the shit beaten out of them, even super sailor moon’s clothes are all torn up
what. how do they not know what happened to Hotaru? Usagi was literally holding her in her arms.
“Does she not understand that I won’t be able to see her, or mamu, or the others if I go?” they’re. they’re literally in the future too. they’re literally your parents. it’s the same fucking people.
Motoki’s fiance came back a second time and I doubt they’re gonna acknowledge she’s a monster. Even when the villains are looking for pure/beautiful dreams
er....the....reactions the girls are having to the guy invading their dream worlds is....like he’s...

#though the romance aspect wasn't really what attracted me to the manga#I mean I obviously love Mamoru as a character but that grew out of reading the manga closely#it was more about the worldbuilding and intense storyline#and watching my fav senshi develop over time#rather than the repetitive nature of the anime (via @luna-whiskers )
Yeah, the worldbuilding and better villain backstories (if weaker characterization, which I will admit) and a more urgent pace that never really let the stakes drop were all huge draws of the manga to me. The 90s anime is... not great... at the worldbuilding. Like I will never get over them just kind of forgetting to give the Dark Kingdom any kind of motivation or backstory at all. They’re evil! / Why? / Because they were evil in the past! / Why were they evil then? / Um???? They just??? Were???
I’m also a HUGE outer senshi fan. Like, I LOVE THEM. As a kid Saturn was my fave, and I had a good friend who identified with Pluto hard. And if your favorite characters are Saturn and Pluto then the 90s anime is gonna short-change you. Even if it’s Neptune and Uranus, at least they get to show up in the Dream arc of the manga. Plus, I feel like while HaruMichi get more development and screentime in the 90s anime (and S is def my fave season), their motivations make more sense and they’re more approachable in the manga. (That SilMil flashback! Their immediate loyalty to their princess! Gosh!!!)
The 90s anime is okay if you enjoy the inners group dynamics, as they get more time to play off each other (though, and I cannot stress this enough, if that’s what you love I highly recommend PGSM).
People talk a lot about wanting a version of Sailor Moon that takes the best aspects of all versions. The world-building and stakes and moving plot of the manga. Time for individual characters to interact and shine like in PGSM and the 90s anime. Rocking awesome guitar soundtrack and modern design like in Crystal.
From what I can see, most of the “Crystal Hate” is more a reaction to that than to the 90s anime, even if the people making the criticisms don’t realize it themselves. People aren’t comparing Crystal to the 90s anime, really. They’re comparing it to what they wish it was. They don’t realize the story they’ve built in their head from the 90s anime over 20 years of over-analysis and the one that actually textually exists are very different. So when Crystal isn’t immediately as good as 1. The Best Possible Hybrid Version of Sailor Moon or as 2. The Really Awesome 90s Headcanons I’ve built Over Decades of Fandom it must be a rank failure.
I have criticisms of Crystal. Things that I really dislike. Choices that were bad, and missed opportunities. I have things I dislike about the manga. I have things I dislike about PGSM. I have things I dislike about the 90s anime.
I think it’s true that each “camp” is coming to Sailor Moon for different things.
I think that also causes each camp to miss the flaws in the thing they love.
What baffles me is when people try to claim one is objectively better than the other. Like, I too hate the break up arc of the 90s anime and have seen the garbage wreck that is SuperS - but goodness knows the motivation behind the 90s anime Black Moon Clan made more sense than the manga motivation (which just seemed to be “We really hate peace and immortality, inexplicably? Utopias are boring!”). I, too, hated the terrible implementation of Sen/Shi in Crystal (SO. MUCH.) but remember when Pluto was introduced and then DIDN’T DO ANYTHING AT ALL in the 90s R season??? Because I’m still angry that they wasted her character like that! And don’t get me started on the terrible Rei/Mamo/Usagi fucking love triangle. Ugh I’m gonna vomit.
Like 90s ChibiUsa is obnoxious, manga ChibiUsa is more likable but also more uncomfortably obsessed with sleeping with her dad. So. You know. Trades.
There’s lots of criticism to go around, is what I’m saying. And I don’t think it’s as simple as “world building” vs “character interaction”, or “love story” vs “ensemble”. I think there are lots of small things that can be important to you that are gonna set your camp.
If Rei hating men is important to you, the manga is gonna be your jam more than the 90s anime. If Minako being a goofball is more your thing, the 90s anime gives her more time to really shine (and you’re gonna hate PGSM). If you love the relationship between Makoto and Ami you’ll prefer the 90s anime, but if you like Rei and Minako interactions, you get more of that from the manga (and you’re gonna love PGSM).
God I’ve talked for ages. And I don’t really have a cohesive point other than I don’t think it’s very clear cut why some people like one over another. What I do think is obvious is that if you’re insistent your opinion is “right”, then you either aren’t very good at seeing the flaws in your own favorite, or aren’t very good at understanding that other people might have different priorities than you.
Crystallizing my thoughts on the Sailor Moon manga/Crystal vs the 90's anime/PGSM.
When it comes to Sailor Moon, there’s deep divide between the Manga fans and the fans of the 90’s anime, and when Crystal started this boiled over into a lot of flame wars.
And what I think it boils down to is that each “camp” is coming to Sailor Moon for a different thing, and each version has different strengths.
The Manga is the Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibiusa super show, and the rest of the senshi are basically just supporting players. But it goes into a lot more depth in the Usagi and Mamoru relationship, as well as a lot more world building (even if most of it has next to no follow through)
On the other hand, PGSM and the 90’s anime in particular really played up the ensemble nature of the Senshi, and for people who aren’t as invested in the Usagi/Mamoru relationship, but are more interested in the ensemble dynamics of the senshi, then yeah the 90’s anime and PGSM are more up your alley.

Bud the problem with your demon eggs is that it only ever finds one pure heart at a time, even when all of the guardians have one and have been attacked at different times, plus two of the guardians DO have what you seek and the eggs never notice.
Uh. All the girls were dressed in casual clothes then suddenly they’re in their school uniforms?
At this point Mina and Usagi are the only ones who haven’t had their heart crystals taken yet, but Usagi’s got plot armor since she’s the one who has to kill the monsters, considering Neptune and Uranus already got Worfed and can’t kill them suddenly.
“Why did you quit volleyball after you came back from England?” “Yeah, volleyball was really great...” *awkward silence for 5 seconds* you uh, you gonna answer him?
Oh, they DID bring back “Senshi as celebrities” thing from season 1 that just kinda disappeared. Does Minako even get any money from her Sailor V merchandise??
Usagi’s birthday but it doesn’t seem like the writers remembered she had a family
Wait why is Minako wearing Usagi’s blue bow dress? It’s only missing the moon necklace..
I really don’t like Haruka being so interested in Usagi when she’s suppose to be in love with Michiru. Like, genuinely interested in her. And yeah I don’t like Usagi still trying to chase other people (like Haruka) when she’s suppose to be only in love with Mamoru.
WHAT THE FUCK also why is Shin-chan here....was that boy’s weird behavior a reference to Shin-chan cause I never watched that
Damn Haruka literally turns everyone into a lesbian. Chibiusa meets her then the next girl she meets she falls in love with. Wait, that’s a boy?? I could’ve sworn they referred to him as “she” and “her” right before this. how inconsistent.
“A heart as pure as his is rare in this day and age.” Yeah not like we’ve already seen like 20 pure-hearted individuals in Japan alone who were targets
wow they actually let someone besides Usagi defeat the monster for once
Hmmmm it says “distant past” but they’re the same age, and it doesn’t seem like they’ve been guardians for more than a few months. I wonder if they’ll explain how they got their powers and why they’re only now getting visions, rather than when the other guardians started getting them.
???? Where did this monster come from? The Black Moon clan? The Dark Moon Kingdom? Why and how did Michiru awaken and get hers??
Michiru was the one who pined and chased after Haruka, interesting
ooooh my god usagi’s DRUNK
New sailoIntro spoils once again. Hi Pluto, hi new Usagi transformation, hi Hotaru
I like how Viz stopped bothering to translate/dub the japanese text in the episodes 🙄 how the hell am I suppose to know what snail sign reads?
Why do Neptune/Michiru and Uranus/Haruka have better writing than 75% of the show and 90% of the relationships
....ah...bury your gays in full effect here....this would have been more of a shock if THE EPISODE TITLE DIDNT STATE THEY DIE. nvm next episode they live.
2 eps later, oh my god the art style in this ep is that ugly style that appeared in some 90s anime with the big, diagonal eyes and long mouths, not good for Hotaru’s debut
“Look! There’s MJ!” Oh.....
