Always clean with the hottest water possibleSynthetic fibers, especially oil-loving fibers such as olefin and polyester, release oily soils readily when cleaned with hot cleaning solutions.The use of hot water speeds cleaning and lessens the need for highly buffered alkaline cleaning detergents that might otherwise cause bleeding or fading of colors.However, there are two distinct situations where “hot is not so hot:”Non-colorfast fabrics: Depending on the cleaning agents used and the dyes that are present, there are times, contrary to popularly held belief, that hot water may contribute to color bleeding when warm water may not.Synthetic fiber velvets: Under certain circumstances, such as heat spikes in equipment with poorly regulated heat systems, permanent distortion can occur when a burst of heat contacts some synthetic fiber velvet fabrics. Very warm, consistent temperature is safer on such fabrics than extremely hot water that might not be easily controlled.3. The tags are accurate cleaning guidelinesThere are two tags commonly found on furniture: Fiber content tags and cleaning code tags.Both can be misleading.Fiber content tags most always describe the material used for “fill” or “stuffing” in the furniture. If you see a tag that says the material is some percentage of cotton/polyester felt, it’s likely to describe the materials under the fabric you are cleaning. There are cases when you might discover tags that do list the fiber content of the fabric that you are cleaning, but this is very rare.Cleaning code tags are actually colorfastness code tags used by furniture manufacturers to assist the consumer to determine which products they might use to maintain their fabric. Fiber ID tests are uselessMany cleaners become frustrated when they attempt to perform burn testing on upholstery fabric.Because a variety of fibers may be blended when making upholstery fabrics, there are often conflicting results when such materials are burnt together.In addition to the issue of blended fibers, there is also the fact that many fabrics have material applied to the back of the fabric to stabilize it that also creates false reads when a cleaner attempts to identify a specific fiber.However, completely overlooking the benefits of understanding at least which fiber family is to be cleaned is not wise.If your burn test can tell you, at the very least, if the fabric is made of natural fibers, synthetic fibers or blends of both, you have a better understanding of the risks of cleaning such a fabric and what soil removal levels might be possible than if you do not know how to determine the basic fiber family.5. While the design of a new vehicle might start with a clean sheet of white paper, the operative word for a classic is enhancement; taking what the factory created but using your own ideas to make it just a little better. Personalizing a vintage ride usually begins with eliminating the collection of dings and dents acquired in the past, followed by dispensing with anything that interrupts the truck’s clean lines. Gaps are tightened, holes are filled, and creativity comes into play with subtle additions. It takes a while and demands a careful blending imagination, skill, and cash before the finished product can begin its roll toward the winner’s circle.

Eugene Brown from Tabor City, North Carolina, is intimately familiar with the process since this C10 is the 12th in a long line of cool customs over the years. Eugene is the owner of a towing and recovery business with cars and trucks; not only a wonderful hobby but also a way to promote family bonding. He and his son built a custom truck together, started when “Little Willie” was 10 years old. The bright Sunset Orange 1984 Chevrolet has been highly successful on the show circuit for the last seven years and became motivation for Eugene to create another show vehicle of his own.

He found this 1969 Chevrolet C10 in North Carolina in fairly good shape. There were lots of initial changes planned for the truck but since Eugene is an old hand at creating unique custom vehicles, one of his first tasks was determining a theme. Uniquely, the influence for this one came from a popular ZZ Top video called “Sharp Dressed Man,” a song making the rounds when Eugene was a kid of 17. The “Male Fantasy Come to Life” theme was a dynamic combination featuring the chopped 1933 Ford known as the Eliminator, Billy Gibbons’ award-winning guitar riff, and the three beautiful girls who somehow squeezed inside the chopped coupe. Although Eugene’s Chevy doesn’t have the lightning bolt graphics or the famous lightning bolt key, his ride would share the bright red paintjob as well as a black and white interior, influenced by the tuxedo worn by both the star in the MTV video and coincidentally, by young son Willie on his way to the prom.

The adventure began with Eugene prepping the truck, handling much of the bodywork himself but usually trusting the finishing process to professionals. Since cool trucks need an equally cool profile, the Chevy gets considerably closer to the asphalt thanks to chassis mods and air suspension, beginning with a C-notch for clearance along with FAST bags activated by an EZ Air Ride compressor and 5-gallon reserve tank under the bed. Moog A-arms, sway bars, and GM power disc brakes stabilize the frontend. Refurbished drum brakes were added to the 10-bolt rear running 4.11 gears. Eibach shocks stabilize all four corners ensuring this ride can be at home cruising the highway or zipping through the cones at the local autocross.

Conservative body mods began with a 2-inch cowl induction hood, custom grille, and projection headlights that feature built in LED parking lights and turn signals. Accenting the original lines without creating too big a styling departure, the front and rear aftermarket bumpers were shortened and tucked to fit the contours of the truck. Since the Chevy was scheduled for a new LS powerplant with an EFI fuel system, the old, in-cab gas tank was trashed and a new baffled tank installed between the rear framerails. At the same time, a unique gas filler cap was added to the rear corner of the bed on the driver side. Eugene kept the bed clean, painting it to match the exterior and adding just a touch of black to the inner fender panels for contrast. Classic IROC wheels, one of his all-time favorites, were the perfect Chevy touch and as an added benefit they’re easy to clean. Lexani rubber plants the power.

Returning to the “Sharp Dressed Man” theme, Eugene smiles when he says his Bowtie’s interior has a distinctively formal look. The 60/40-split bench seat was reupholstered in black and white leather, giving the truck the look of a tuxedo. Door panels were stitched to match. The factory dash was updated with Dakota Digital instruments, featuring an analog look that was in keeping with the half-century-old truck as well as a modern, central digital message board. The aftermarket Old Air A/C keeps the cabin cool while the Kenwood KDC 355U stereo with its eight preset EQ curves and a three-band equalizer controls a mix of six speakers, entertaining driver and passenger with concert hall sounds.

There are obvious advantages to owning a towing and recovery business, not the least of which is access to some unique spare parts. Under the hood of Eugene’s truck is a 2002 Chevrolet LS V-8/4L60E combination, taken from a wrecked truck on his back lot. It doesn’t make any difference whether you’re popping the hood or flooring the accelerator, Chevy’s LS engine always makes an immediate impression. More than quick enough in stock form, the sharply dressed motor follows the same theme as the interior with its black and white motif. Accents include powdercoated valve covers that cover the coil packs, now featuring a New Creation logo. A K&N filter helps the engine inhale an unrestricted big gulp while Kook headers and Flowmaster mufflers rapidly dump spent gases. Everything under the hood was painted to match the exterior, the firewall was smoothed, and the inner fender panels were used to hide the wiring. A Ron Francis harness ensures that all the automotive elements are properly connected.

The final step was paint and although the video theme dictated a generic red, a family connection nailed down the exact shade. Eugene’s father has a 2004 Corvette painted Victory Red, which became the perfect choice for the rejuvenated truck. Brandon Nutter from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, wrapped up the project, doing the final paint- and bodywork. The truck took two years to complete and was a part-time effort with Eugene dividing time between his own and his son’s truck. Underscoring the enthusiast nature of this family, the Browns have 15 vehicles at home with three belonging to young son Willie and 12 belonging to Eugene! Hey, a family that rides together certainly has fun together!
