Playing House by ClarkeStetler, Goosenik
Erik Lehnsherr has been 'fighting for mutant rights' for the last couple years. Some might call it terrorism, but those people were narrow-minded. Unfortunately, this means that when Magda Maximoff died, no one was able to locate him to let him know that his children were without a guardian. Charles Xavier was selected as their foster parent instead, and had been doing an excellent job for the past year. Erik is back now and has no intention of being separated from his children, but working together for the kids is easier said than done.
In a different situation— some anonymous bar in some overpopulated city, perhaps— Erik would absolutely have been interested. He was slender and looked about Erik’s age, but his eyes took up the majority of his face and were almost alarmingly blue. His dark curls looked like they were made for a hand to fist in. His anger was nearly palpable, sparking off him in waves that Erik could physically feel. Under any other circumstance, he’d be attracted, would have immediately started things working to get the pretty little Englishman back to his place.
Not this circumstance.
“You will not,” the Brit snarled at Erik, “Not be taking custody of my children.”
Mi Casa es Su Casa by Unrepentant_Marvelite
Angel, a ward of the state for as long as she can remember, has been assigned to a new foster home. Frankly, all she's looking for is some place to be left in peace to shuffle through the rest of her time in the system. It doesn't take her long at the Xavier household though to realize she's never been placed anywhere quite like this before. Whether it's a blessing or a curse, however, remains to be seen.
The Choices That You Make by emperors_girl (series)
Alex is not the kind of kid who lives in houses with white picket fences. Alex is the kind of kid who’s had seven placements in five years. He was never, ever going to be able to stay.
(This series is more focused on Alex and Hank, with Charles and Erik as foster parents.)
Go your seeking, soul by phalangine
In a fit of pique, Erik became a donor at a sperm bank. Years later, through an online site that matches donors to the children born from them, he meets the children and their father, Charles. As much as he wishes he could be more present in their lives, he is happy just to know them. The real trouble is, Erik has feelings for Charles that go beyond the easy friendship the man offers.
(And this one has Charles as the adoptive father of Erik's bio kids - he was a sperm donor - so not exactly what you asked for but it's a great fic and shares similar themes :D)

Hello! I am so thankful for your lovely blog and your amazing Cherik fic recs. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into finding such gems! I was wondering if you knew of any fics in which Charles is protective of Erik, or fics which address Erik’s past trauma/PTSD in some way? I know this is a bit of a vague request and I apologize for that, but I would love to read anything even tangentially related to either of those. Thank you so much & best wishes!
Thank you so much for your request anon. There are certainly fics out there that address Erik's PTSD, though more should definitely do it. There are also some very good protective Charles fics out there that concern Charles being protective over Erik. I hope you enjoy this list. Also, so sorry how long this took me.
Protective Charles / PTSD Erik
The Slow Tide - 4ofakind
Summary: Erik Lehnsherr had a rule: he did not sleep with people. Sex, sure, when necessary. But to share a bed with a stranger- that was something he could not do.
Not until Charles.
A short one-shot, exploration of how Erik's PTSD would effect his sleep, and how Charles helps.
Could I Need You This Much – lanasauli
Summary: Charles is all too familiar with prejudice - it's one of the more unfortunate consequences of being a telepath. It's easy to ignore, until it's directed at Erik.
Or: Charles and Erik encounter an antisemite while recruiting. Charles overreacts and almost loses control.
For these two men – novera_nope
Summary: When Erik has a panic attack on the plane, even an emotionally stunted man as Logan realizes the nature of the relationship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr.
Sleep don’t weep – baehj2915
Summary: Erik has trouble sleeping. Charles sort of makes him a little bit. Fluffy AU from the movie where they stay together--because I want them to and for no other reason--and Erik extemporizes about their relationship.
Laut - ThirdActLove
Summary: Erik has nightmares about his time with Shaw in the concentration camp. Charles is his anchor.
After? There is No ‘After’ -Unrepentant_Marvelite
Summary: Erik knows what he is for. He has known his responsibilities as a survivor since the moment he woke under a scratchy, lice-infested blanket in the Red Army hospital. His world is painted in lucid blacks and whites (so often splashed in red) and there is no room for uncertainty or indecision... until a certain sunburned Englishman throws himself into his world.
A Touch of Your Love - stories_in_howls
Summary: 5 times Charles touches Erik and 1 time Erik asks to be touched.
In Restless Dreams I Walked Alone - UisceOneLove
Summary: It is unsafe to be so exposed. It is unsafe to be in a five-pointed box--
"You gonna be okay, Erik?" Logan asks, and it's like he knows before a word is uttered in reply.
His lips feel tight and dry, ready to split at the cracks when he smiles. "I survive."
By the skin of his teeth.
The Children of an Idle Brain - Margo_Kim
Summary: Sometimes, when he’s lucky, Schmidt can’t hurt him. It’s like there’s a room inside of Erik’s head that’s he’s usually locked out of, that won’t open no matter if he beats himself bloody against it. On those days, he endures. But sometimes—and Erik doesn’t know why, whether it’s that the stars align or some higher power takes pity or Erik screams loud enough to earn his reward—the door opens. Erik can duck inside and slam it behind him and watches himself through the windows as Schmidt slowly, methodically tortures him to strength.
These days, this past week, there’s a boy in the room with him and he tells Erik, “That’s horrible,” like that means something.
Somehow, across the world, Erik's and Charles' minds touch when they need each other most. They can't be sure that the other boy is real. They suspect that he is not. But that doesn't mean they aren't each other's lifeline until they lose each other and then for a while longer.
The Choice - cgf_kat
Summary: For ten months Shaw has had Erik and Charles tortured. Neither will make the choice to end the other's life and go free, stopping it all. Charles knows this has to end, but he does not want Erik to die. He takes matters into his own hands, instead.
Die Gretchenfrage - SilusLocke, x57
Summary: Four years post DoFP, Charles has reestablished the school and speaks publicly in support of mutantkind before he is kidnapped by Magneto's Brotherhood. There, a violently unstable Erik asks for truce and Charles, little better than a prisoner, must decide whether their goals could ever align again. Unbeknownst to them both, it is already too late.
Subject E - Ook
Summary: In which Subject E, unwilling medical experiment, runs away from the lab which has him captive, and is taken in by Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
Also known as the one wherein the author, no, I mean Shaw, did Terrible Things to Erik, and Charles helps him recover, for a change.
To Build a Home - stories_in_howls
Summary: In his family's old mansion in Westchester Charles runs a place where young mutants can recover from traumatic experiences and learn how to control their powers. One day, his friend Moira calls him because of an older mutant, who controls metal, hasn't been free for sixteen years, and isn't talking to anyone. Charles and Erik slowly bond over telepathic conversations, but Erik's past haunts them both.
You’re Not Doing This Alone - flightinflame, Lynds
Summary: What's meant to be a simple recruitment mission leads to both Erik and Charles being de-aged back to thirteen years old. Terrified and out of their depth, the boys try to hide their situation and help each other until they can work out what is going on.
A Single Shot - bjjones
Summary: He should have felt the pain on impact, but he couldn't. Shaw had stolen that from him, right along with pleasure.
Be dead, be alive, be something in between - The_Aleph
Summary: “It was a pleasure doing business with you, Major.”
“Forgive me when I say the feeling is far from mutual.”, he grimly took the hand: “Goodbye, Professor Xavier.”
He turned to walk out of the room, but before leaving he stopped by him, grabbed him by the collar and yanked him up to whisper in his ear:
“You are no longer my problem. The Professor is now your Master. I heard some things about him. I wouldn’t anger him. See you.”
Stryker threw him back on the floor and left without another word. Left him alone. Alone with a foreign human. The room was warm. He started to tremble.
-------
At the end of the war, the allies freed the prisoners in the concentration camps all over Europe. Thousands could walk free for the first time in years, millions would never walk the surface of the earth again. And a few just disappeared. Some fled. Some were killed. Some were captured.
Only one was send away. And now, years later, his remains are discovered by one Charles Xavier on the mission to save his little sister. But there is not much left, not even a name.
Who is this man?
Bloodline Futures - MichaBerry
Summary: After Shaw escaped from the beach, children start to go missing. Mutant children with interesting futures and connections to the X-Men. Erik and Charles must work together to stop Shaw from destroying even more lives and save their own kind from his clutches. But what happens when Erik's own children become the next targets for Shaw's 'program'?
the life in dead trees - fabeld
Summary: Erik Lehnsherr is fourteen when Captain America and The Howling Commandos liberate what remains of Auschwitz. The Allied forces take a liking to both Erik and his mutation, vowing to protect him from escaped war criminal, Klaus Schmidt. It’s isolating, growing up as a Holocaust survivor and a mutant, in a new country, but Erik soon finds that he doesn’t have to carry the weight alone.
Dear Soldier - Lindstrom, ToriTC198
Summary: "Dear Soldier,
I pray that this package finds you well. The organization gave us a list of odds and ends that you might need, but I thought that a person so far from home might appreciate something more than soap and tube socks."
When Charles' school decides to send care packages to the soldiers fighting in Vietnam, he chooses to also include a letter and a few personal touches. When Staff Sergeant Erik is the recipient of that particular care package it will spur a relationship that will change them both.
The Rain Must Fall - Dark_Eyed_Panda
Summary: Air Force 2d Lt Erik Lehnsherr returns home after being held prisoner in Russia for ten years and is celebrated as a war hero. However, CIA agent Moira MacTaggert suspects that he has been turned against his own country. She asks Charles Xavier, a psychology professor at Columbia University, to surveil Lehnsherr 24/7 and find out whether he has become a terrorist.
It's already too late when Charles realizes that he's grown too attached to the man.
And things go out of control.
Proceed With Caution - Unforgotten
Summary: Erik is a former soldier who has a service dog for his PTSD. Charles is this nosy guy in a wheelchair he meets in the park.
Few Experience (what you really are) - flightinflame
Summary:Magneto despises the humans that experiment on and enslave his kind. Recaptured after escaping the lab where he spent his youth, he finds himself bought by a rich man whose household is full of mutants. But Charles is keeping secrets of his own, and while he’s a dangerous man, he’s a powerful one to have on your side.

Fic Rec: After? There is No 'After'
Fic: After? There is No 'After' by Unrepentant_Marvelite

Comment: Brilliant. This is an Erik who is full of sharp, painful edges and gunsmoke; who is wary and suspicious of not being able to understand what Charles wants with him.
