One thing that we Christians have in common is the assurance that we are saved through faith because of the grace of God not because of our own works. This message of salvation is indeed the greatest gift that we can ever receive from God and the full definition of God’s grace in our lives. As Christians, we have come into repentance, have depended and took refuge to the death and resurrection of Christ so that we will be saved.

However, in our verse today, we are reminded that one day we will stand before the Father and be judged (both believers and non-believers of Christ). We will stand before God and accept His wrath because of our sinfulness. The great news is that, since we came to God and had a repentant heart, we have accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior. So, by this, God will not look at what we did but what Christ did in the cross. He will see Christ instead of us.

Now, this verse is not only a positive reminder for us Christians that we will not receive the wrath of God because we have come to an acceptance that we are sinners, so we need a Savior. But this is also a bitter reminder for those people who continued to reject God’s grace in their life. Since they have rejected the good news and the salvation by grace through faith, God’s judgement will be based on their works. Which we all know that our race is incapable of doing good.

We have to understand that God desires everyone to be saved that is why He has given us Jesus Christ, His Son, to be our atoning sacrifice so that everyone who will come to Him will be saved. God has given us equal opportunity to be saved and has given us all the chance to accept Christ as our Lord and Savior. Yet, many still choose to reject this glorious Gospel, so Paul wants to remind everyone that one day will come and that God’s wrath will be on those people who continued living in a sinful way.

Thus, we are storing up wrath against ourselves if we continue to dwell in darkness. Our hearts are indeed stubborn and if we continue to walk in darkness, God’s wrath will be upon us. However, praise God for His grace and mercy that He has given us Jesus. So, the only way to escape the wrath of God is through Jesus Christ. Yet, many have rejected Him and many have mocked Christ. Thus, that is the very reason why Paul called our hearts unrepentant and stubborn. With that unrepentant and stubborn heart, the wrath of God will be released on those who remained like that.

Furthermore, not only to those who have not accepted Christ but also this is a reminder for Christians to stay in the faith. Continue to walk in the Lord always and always immerse yourself in the Word. We have to always assess ourselves if we are really following what God commanded us to do and living our lives in-sync with Christ or we are just free-riding. We have to understand that grace should help us turn away from sin not that it will be used as our excuse to sin more because we thought that we will be forgiven anyway.

If we have that mindset, then we really have to assess ourselves and to always remind ourselves that we are already saved and we are living our new self already, not our old self. We have to remember that God will not walk away from us but it is us who can walk away from Him and sin can make our hearts hard to the point that sinning does not feel wrong anymore. Therefore, may we always remember this verse and be encouraged that we are already saved and we must fix our eyes to Jesus. We should always remember that on the day of wrath and judgement, God will see Jesus instead of us if we remain in Him because He remains in us. Let us not make our hearts hard and open ourselves. Let us surrender our lives to God and let Him guide us to the perfect plan He has for us. May we always desire to bring more people to the salvation God has offered us because it is our only response to God’s faithfulness and goodness in our lives.
