Tangled the Series is canon to Tangled, correct? I heard from somebody that anything made by DisneyToon isnβt canon to any of the original films made by WDAS.
Canon is a tricky biscuit. Disney essentially has three canons, and there is a hierarchy:
Disney Animated Canon, which is the strictest and consists exclusively of the theatrically-released animated movies (or, in more recent years, feature-length, high-quality animated movies that would have been in theaters, had the social climate been more available for it, such as Raya and the Last Dragon). These feature-length films are canon only to themselves, unless they are direct sequels to the previous canon*. Yes, this means that Easter eggs that appear in movies do not count as canon to that movie. Frozen and Frozen II are of the same canon, but Tangled is not canon to Frozen, just because Rapunzel and Eugene appear briefly on screen during "For the First Time In Forever." That was an Easter egg and nothing more. Similarly, Moana has nothing to do with Frozen, Tangled, or Big Hero 6: Maui turning into Sven, one of the Kakamoras resembling Baymax, and the sundrop flower existing on Motunui are all Easter eggs. Similarly, characters in the theme parks are not required to know all the content of the Individual Franchise Canon, though they often choose to, in order to better indulge the guests.
Individual Franchise Canon, which is anything with the original content's name tacked onto it. Tangled: the Series is canon to Tangled, just as Baymax+ is canon to Big Hero 6, and The Little Mermaid: the Animated Series is canon to The Little Mermaid. They are only canon to their own franchise, and as soon as Disney Animated Canon comes into play, they stop being canon.
Supplemental Material Canon, which is anything that appears in novelizations, storybooks, video games, etc. These things can be considered canon in so far as they do not directly contradict what is said in canon. I have read multiple Tangled storybooks about things that Rapunzel and Eugene did along the way to the kingdom, or during their day in the kingdom, that never appeared in the movie and... let's be honest, they didn't happen.
So, if you are talking about Tangled as a franchise, then yes, the series is canon to it. But if you are talking about Tangled as a movie and how it fits into the Disney animated universe, the series is not canon. I hope this makes sense.
However, if you're writing fanfiction, do whatever you want.
*Some things are retconned as being canon. In the case of Tangled, the king and queen do not have names in the movie, but their names have been canonized as Frederic and Arianna because of the series.
