why does avdol know about the assassins

if we compile context facts in one place, i think Some theories could be made

he seems particularly knowledgeable about hitmen: "mafia, governments, and militaries employ his services (devo)," "he's paid to make them look like accidents (grey fly)," recognized cameo on sight. and knows that "no one" who has faced devo is alive. he also knows midler's range.

if you are paid, there is a decent possibility that you leave a paper trail. joseph seems confident in avdol's abilities to track people down very little (he asks if avdol can gauge anything from a photo with a dark background).

joseph isn't wrong: avdol can pinpoint your address using an unfortunate fly.

ordinarily an advocate of tactical retreat and restraint, but bystander death in front of him will negate this. he also believes "some things are too evil to be allowed to live."

has a knife on hand, which he tosses to people in case they want to skip the hard part.

one of the best moods that we see him in is when he, in effect, has cameo cornered in an area where avdol has complete tactical advantage: wide open space, the terrain is known to avdol, cameo doesn't know the full extent of avdol's strength and has been caught off guard, etc

he is fine with battling jotaro, but immediately disengages when jotaro says "i'm locked in here because i keep hurting people without meaning to"

very familiar with stand battle power: he's the one who states that stand power is in relation to range, he knows that breath restriction diminishes a stand (unless you are dark blue moon or jotaro i suppose), and he assumed that a recently manifested stand wouldn't be as clear as splat was- he can even estimate your distance if he knows enough about your stand beforehand (we see w cameo and midler)

similar to the tarot (all experienced with stand fights), avdol uses knowledge as a metric of advantage- "the enemy knows everything about you- you said that you've lived on your own, but at this point, you're not going to be able to win by yourself."

you could argue that avdol's general demeanor is understandably impacted by how much knowledge he has: he's visibly confident and enthusiastic during the cameo fight. in the polnareff fight, he's cautious, but somewhat relaxed (even charmed) by the fact that polnareff is extremely open about his abilities.

conversely, as early as dark blue moon, "a stand that i, avdol, haven't heard of." knowledge is a very important aspect of how he fights. avdol also notes that with strength, "this is the first time i've encountered such power."

side note, magician's red requires a lot of knowledge: not only are you dealing with the stand, which has a lot of components making the whole, but avdol's very aware of the environment. we see him making really versatile usage of his surroundings, using the statue of magician's red, he uses the ground to solve tactical problems multiple times (making the tunnel and burning the hole under the train track), and red acts as a life/stand sensor.

his test of character for both jotaro and polnareff is exposing his back and walking away- in the mariah episode, we see avdol's actual reflexes in regards to things flying at his back. during combat, this man determines whether he wants to be friends with you based on whether you try stabbing him in the back.

this could be also interpreted as avdol partially basing that judgement on how someone responds to their opponent disengaging!

finally, he's very, very casual about faking his death.

basically a summary of this behemoth but! based on context, i think it's safe to say that avdol and polnareff have more in common than initial impression, because i don't think avdol was using all that information to make trivia games.

that said! i don't think he was tracking with the express intent to battle/kill- even when splat was getting rowdy, avdol doesn't go full throttle, and is quick to stop. i think it was more a statement of "essentially having telekinesis won't free you from consequence," and once he realizes that jotaro wasn't using splat to just bat people around, he hit him with "Turns My Back On You Haha Hope No One Stabs It"

hell, avdol choses to spare polnareff before he realized that polnareff likely had a fleshbud, based on the actions of that episode. he immediately tries to give iggy some gum after iggy is in the cage. i think avdol is definitely an enjoyer of Snappish Weirdo Guys.

2024 Diary Entry No. 5

I just awoke from a nap. Plus, I need to clock out in < 5 minutes, so nothing much has happened today...well, except for my parents' arguing, thru which I slept, this time around. I feel so empty right now, even after smoking a cigarette. Having been on medication for 3.75 years, there is a long list of things I miss. But I need to go back to college first and make the biggest comeback of my life. It's a slow, arduous road, but I need to go back. Saving the money to go back to school is going to be a bitch, but, oh, well, there are so many jobs to apply for...and they all need a college degree? Now I'm getting desperate to leave my parents' place. The lover rescue never worked to start with, and now, I'm so desperate to find work, work that will give me much more than a measly ass allowance every two weeks to get anything out. The stress and pressure have been getting to me, so much so, that smoking is an unhealthy coping mechanism, and I must get another way to get hired, even if it means, just passing around an empty resume that needs filling. Serious filling with experience and money from wherever I get hired. It's so much bullshit coming from the government: I end up living with CLOWNS for parents, while my ex is taking care of MY son?! It's not fucking fair! I ain't 'been employed before in the 14 years of graduating high school...them motherfuckers won't take me seriously unless I die of an apparent suicide, and then I end up on the news. What kind of respect will they give me then?! They'll never respect me unless I push back and force their hand to do so. I'm not so pleased with the fucking life I have at all. The devil's full of shit, so full of shit that I wish he didn't exist, but he does, so I'm praying for a job interview to happen. Waiting for a check to get my console + shit out isn't fair. Neither is applying for work then not being taken seriously. I shall rant no more.

I know if I don't relax, then I'll be up all night for the umpteenth time...yet again. but. then again, idgaf no more, though, because I'm getting myself back. This morning, I broke the coffee carafe in a huge rage. Now, I'm going to have to replace the dad gum thing next Friday. If I have to pick myself by myself, then nobody's getting shit. Except for the debt people, bills, and subs...NOBODY BETTER ASK FOR SHIT! This is exactly how I feel right now, having to live with clowns for padres for 3.75 years. I'm sick of being used to taking care of shit; why can't I ever be taken care of?

Walk us through a typical day in the life of the character(s) of your choice. Do they have a routine, or is each day eventful and wildly unpredictable?

(I'll choose some characters at random for this one, since I've got many characters, with very different lives. So there'll be both some MCs and Secondary Characters on this list. Also, this routine walkthrough only applies to their lives before the main storyline of the book actually starts, because when it starts there isn't much of a routine and their lives are mostly chaos)

This gets kinda long, so the answer will be under the cut!

Julyan Ashiren -

Typically, Julyan wakes up before the sun is even up, being a very "early bird" kind of person. He usually starts his day by making sure the house is somewhat organized and that everything is the way it should be so that he can start doing something else. Also, out of the three siblings, he is the one who makes sure breakfast is ready (mostly because the other two - Raelen and Azra - can't cook anything remotely edible). By then it is still very early in the morning (think 6AM) when he starts getting ready to work. Julyan works as a Forgebearer (which means he is a mage under the employ of the crown who makes runic weaponry for the local army), so his workday starts by lighting up his forge and making sure he has all the materials he needs to craft the weapons he is commissioned to - if he needs to, this is when he might take a quick trip to the marketplaces in the city below, to buy the supplies he needs. Usually, his siblings wake up around an hour later, and after having breakfast (which Julyan has already made), they also go about their days. Azra goes to the Rider's Keep to do his duties as a cartographer and continue his training, while Raelen stays around for a bit to help Julyan with his work in the forge. Most of Julyan's day is spent working, so after Raelen helps in what she can, she typically goes out to explore the forests around the kingdom or join Azra in training (since she isn't officially a dragon- rider-in-training, she goes there to spar with the local knights and study a bit in the libraries of the Dragon Spire). The rest of Julyan's day pretty much consists of making weapons, armor, and other runic amulets, though he might take a quick lunch break sometime by noon. He makes sure they don't have any debts left to pay and might run some errands if need be. By dusk, he is usually finishing his work, though some days it can go well into the night, and once he does he just has to deliver the weapons he made/fixed to the Fortress on the other side of the mountain. His siblings typically return home by then - as their one rule is not to stay out after dark unsupervised unless they are staying the night at the Keep for some reason. Whenever he finally finishes working, Julyan usually eats dinner with the company of his siblings (the only meal they tend to share together due to his chaotic work days), and they go to sleep sometime later (he is usually the last one to fall asleep). It starts all over again the next day.

Quinn Aurellen -

As a royal courtesan and entertainer, Quinn's routine is, unfortunately, anything but free, especially whenever there are Imperial festivals being celebrated. Typically, Quinn wakes up early in the morning (at sunrise) because he likes the peace and quiet of that time of the day before everyone wakes up and the chaos of his day starts yet again (he likes having time to spend alone, by himself, without having to fake a smile for the sake of a nobility he hates). Usually, since he lives in the Imperial Palaces, he takes a walk around the still-empty halls and the gardens, before returning to his chambers to freshen up for the day. That's where the bothersome part starts. His daily "beauty routine" is long and tedious, spending at least 30 minutes to get his makeup just right (if he gets it wrong its right back to the start again), untangling his long hair and styling it with golden jewelry, making sure his face is perfectly shaved, choosing the right clothes (usually provided to him by his patrons and the servants), and making sure they're pristine enough (usually very delicate silk and gold robes), using a ton of flower perfume. It takes a lot of patience he doesn't have just to get through this part of the day and it makes him annoyed right away, but he'd very much like to stay alive, so he doesn't speak against the nobility. Then, before truly starting his day, he makes sure to spend some time with his young son (eating breakfast, talking, playing, the general child-rearing stuff), before he has to leave him in the care of the head servant for the day (who luckily is a very kind and matronly woman, so he doesn't have to worry so much about his son's safety). The rest of his day is spent amidst the royal court, talking, gossiping, singing, and dancing (when required of him). It annoys the hell out of him, but at least it's not night yet. Whenever he has free time, he typically spends it drawing and painting in his sketchbook. Then night comes, and so does the time to entertain his patrons. He does his job and leaves. (There is a reason he hates festivals and parties because, in those days of the year, everyone gets drunk and annoying, and violent. It just makes things that much harder to just get through). When it's all over, typically past midnight, he takes a bath and changes into his comfortable clothes, before picking up his son (already sleeping) and going home. It all starts over the next day, but when he meets Luciya (the first person to become his true friend without ever wanting anything in return) his days start to become a bit brighter.

Innara Renfelli - Basically her past (and thus her routines) is divided into: (before being banished)/(after being banished)

Innara's life before being banished by her Great Uncle -

She lived in the Spring Palaces of Nethilor, as the only daughter and rightful heir to the kingdom's House Regent. Her father, the dowager ruler, was king of Nethilor. As a princess, she usually woke up in time, but not nearly as early as everyone else. Think 7 AM or 8 AM. After getting ready for the day and that varied a lot.

If it was just a regular, normal day, she'd wear her daily and practical green dress with silver - literally the colors of her house's emblem - and gold linings, which was simple enough to allow her to run around the palace and explore the gardens, while being fancy enough to be suitable for a Crown Princess. She'd also not need to wear her crown or tiara.

If it was a holiday, festival, or overall important day, then she would have to wear the long ceremonial gowns made out of pure silk that was saved for just these occasions. Her mother's purple gown was her favorite when she was younger, and she looked forward to the day she might grow up enough to fit the dress (she never met her mom, so the dress meant a lot). She would have to wear the crown or tiara at all times, and quite a lot of jewels too.

She'd then join her father by the great hall for breakfast (Maeryn always had time to spend with her, outside of talking politics and duty), where they would typically discuss the daily affairs of the kingdom and the duties their House had to perform (talking to a foreign ruler, doing court gatherings, visiting a village, running the kingdom in general). Then most of her day would be spent doing said duties, but sometimes, if she was lucky, she had free time to spare with her cousins, with whom she liked sneaking out of the palace and exploring the villages and forests around their home, or sparring together (Her cousin Rhydian is the reason she is such a good archer today). Her princess duties also largely included private lessons, by the best tutors in the kingdom, so she spent quite a lot of time studying.

Innara's life after being banished by her Great Uncle -

After being forcibly banished by her Great Uncle - and escaping the assassins sent by him to finish the job - Innara had to learn to survive on her own in exile, making it her personal mission to defeat the Secret Court (her Great Uncle had been working for the Secret Court and was using dark magic to slowly poison her father. If she wanted to take back the crown stolen from her family and save her father's life, finding a way to defeat the Secret Court's powers was pretty much her only chance). Most of her days were then spent chaotically traveling the kingdoms, collecting as much information as she could find about the Secret Court and the spread of dark magic, so pretty much any routine was thrown down the drain.

Nyx Faestorm -

As a wandering bard - but also a petty thief - Nyx's daily routine mostly consisted of traveling from village to village with his two travel companions (twins Kaden and Sybil), while trying to pass as a human to hide his Faeborn nature. Their routine consisted of finding a suitable village and then a tavern where the richest customers could be found. There, they'd start singing, drawing in a crowd, and using his Faeborn powers, Nyx would enchant the audience (literally put them in a magical trance) so that the twins could pickpocket any valuables from the unsuspecting crowd. Afterward, they'd book it out of the tavern and the village before the spell wore off, and then repeat the scam in the next town they came across. They've built quite the reputation for themselves doing this, and soon there was a bounty on their capture, but they didn't mind, because they were never caught. Then they would spend their earnings on as much food and drink they could find, maybe even attending a good festival or two and spending their nights in a good inn in a village where they wouldn't be found.

Ellinor Dallantes -

Being the lost princess of Arkellya, raised by the leader of the Agrannorian Guild of Assassins, Ellinor's routine was very straightforward. She'd wake up very early, around the time the first songbirds started to sing, and would swiftly make sure she was ready for the day (taking a quick bath, putting on her daily clothes, putting on her assassin armor, etc). Then, she'd join her friends (the Gilded Viper's group, which at the time consisted of her, Ansell, Emryc and Yuna) at the dining hall of the Forgotten Palaces, for breakfast, where they'd discuss battle plans, their next missions, and important targets. Soon after, she'd spent a couple of hours practicing her skills in the courtyard, making sure she is as sharp as ever for the missions to come. Ansell, Emryc, and Yuna typically train with her as well. Once practice is over, Ellinor takes some time to do her daily mourning rites (she basically prays for the spirits of her late family members) and then, once she finishes it, she rejoins her team as they finally prepare to leave for the missions. Evren - her adoptive father - usually tells them the information about the political secrets currently relevant to their mission, and Ellinor leaves the palace with her team, ready to start another day of trying to bring down the Morosyn Empire. Also, in the days she is not preparing for a battle, trying to rouse a rebellion or kill important targets, she spends her time learning the skills needed to become the ruler she knows she'll need to be when her plans come to fruition.

Jamie Tellian -

Jamie starts his day by waking up and doing some morning stretches (to make sure he is prepared for his daily training in the Academies as a knight). He brushes his hair, which sometimes is a very useless task because those are some difficult locks to tame, and changes into his daily attire - usually his normal clothes upon which he will place his training armor in the arena. He usually tries not to wake Zephyr up (they share a dorm room in the Liranthian Academies) but since the older boy is a very light sleeper, he wakes up anyways. Jamie makes sure they've got everything ready to start the day and they then leave their room to eat breakfast at the Academy's great hall. (Bonus info: Jamie loves eating sweet things for breakfast, and he eats a lot, while Zephyr prefers a simpler breakfast and a lot of coffee - he doesn't like eating too much in the morning). Then they usually go their separate ways, with Zephyr going to the towers of the Hall of Lore, and Jamie going to the arena to start his daily training. He has some breaks throughout the day, which he has recently started using to visit a strange Mageborn girl he met in town, who is helping him translate an important scroll. Then, when his training is over, Jamie likes to read, and read a lot he does. Zephyr usually spends most of his day and night locked up in his study room, trying to find the solution he has been looking for, which means Jamie spends a lot of time alone whenever he fails to convince Zephyr to take a break. At night, they return to the dining hall, have dinner and go to sleep in their room. Jamie usually has no problem falling asleep, but since Zephyr is often plagued by (very brutal) nightmares, the younger boy often finds himself having to help him recover. The routine repeats the next day, with slight variations.

Seira Nivaine -

Raised by her uncle in the borders of Ergyre, Seira spent most of her days wandering the city closest to their isolated house, and roaming the forests, where she found herself mysteriously at peace. Since her uncle was a tailor (and a talented one at that), she sometimes helped him with the pieces he had to finish, but he mostly liked to do it alone (he did teach her how to sew and knit though). Oftentimes feeling lonely, despite her uncle being at home most of the time in his workshop, Seira's wanderings led her closer to the heart of the Ergyran Capital, where she had been to many times when her uncle was hired to make gowns for rich nobles (and even one of the three queens!). On one of those days going to the city alone, she met Darian Caelestis - the son of famous rebel warriors from the region - and Tanwin Lyrandeth - a mysterious elf - who became her friends. She started to hang out with them a lot, though her uncle warned her that "the rebellion only brings them more trouble", and stopped feeling so alone. When the Morosyn Empire invaded Ergyre, she and her uncle fled the city and moved to another kingdom, this was the last time she saw her two friends before the start of the story and the day where she discovered a piece of he mystery of who she was - becoming determined to discover what origins she had.
