UNIVERSITY AFFAIRS -- As COVID-19 research gets fast-tracked, other projects shut down

But this comes at the expense of other crucial health research, as universities and research institutes instruct staff to direct their resources to COVID-19 whenever possible, and to put other work on hold. UNIVERSITY AFFAIRS WINS

With the great guidance of Colin Aitchison, vice president, the University Affairs department has championed some great changes to the Laurier community:

1. Laurier has a permanent Fall reading week in October

2. Received federal grant funding for indigenous students who will have more access to education in Canada

3. Having sidewalks placed on Seagram Drive in Waterloo so it is more accessible for students, especially with the LTR construction.

Thank you Colin and associate vice presidents Phil Marfisi & Petek Yurt, as well as your coordinators and volunteers, for the tremendous work you did this year!

My Innovation Hub : The Student Learning Centre (SLC)

If you’re a Ryerson student, then you’ve definitely visited the Student Learning Centre (SLC) building that stands on the corner of Yonge and Gould.

The SLC is described as a library without books. The building itself is a massive innovation hub – it encourages students to study, meet with others, and exchange ideas. A defining characteristic about the SLC is that it features eight unique floors where students are able to choose and make their own space. Some of these floors include:

“The Beach” The beach is found on the 6th floor of the SLC and is one of the more popular spots for students. It is a very relaxed and open space, just as you would find on a real life beach. Students on this floor are encouraged to sit on the floor or on beanbags, move around furniture, and speak with others at a regular volume level.

“The Garden” The Garden is a more formal study atmosphere, there are couches and tables where students can work. There are also traditional classes an quiet study areas on this floor that offer various student services such as math and English tutoring.

“The Sun” The Sun provides many desks that are each separated by borders to encourage independent studying. in the centre of the floor are various classrooms that can be reserved by students through their online site. Most rooms are equipped with whiteboard walls, and a TV with an HDMI cable so that students may project their laptop screens onto the television screens.

Each of the eight unique floors offer a different atmosphere and space for students to generate ideas and foster innovation. Students aren’t obligated to study on the same floor each time they visit. Depending on their mood or motive, students can choose the option of relaxing on a beanbag at The Beach, or even working in a closed room at The Sun where they can physically write their ideas down on the wall.  

Even without access to enormous funds, the ideas employed by the Student Learning Centre can be replicated in other locations that are known to generate new ideas. For instance, rather than have simple chairs surrounding a large table in a traditional boardroom, employers can replace this furniture with couches that are facing each other. They could even replace office walls with whiteboard paint.

These are just simple suggestions as to how the concept used in designing the SLC can be replicated and used in traditional study environments. If we continue to use the SLC as an example to design and improve on current innovation hubs, I am certain that we could generate plenty of unique ideas and ventures.
