Thermoelectric devices may solve overheating issues in shrinking transistors, researchers say
The electronics industry faces a new challenge. While transistors in computer chips are shrinking, the heat they produce is only increasing. Overheating can cause reduced circuit performance, increased leakage power or even the total breakdown of transistors. A team of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University propose locally embedded thermoelectric devices (TEDs) that can perform active cooling inside circuits. The research is published in the journal Nature Communications. "Circuits like clock generators and arithmetic and logic units (ALU) create high-frequency heat fluxes with their peak hot spots occurring on the microprofessor," explained Feng Xiong, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering. "Cooling systems at the chip size are over designed and a more targeted strategy is necessary to dissipate heat in these hot spots."

DESCRIPTION:
TRAINING ENLISTED MEN IN GAS ENGINE MECHANICS & AUTO REPAIR WORK; UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURG, PA.
Trouble shooting. The men have repaired, assembled and run the engine. They were sent out of the laboratory while the instructor put the engine out of adjustment. The student must find the trouble adjust it and start the engine. It may be a rog in the exhaust line, but one at least thinks it is in the electrical connections.

I haven't seen this on tumblr but its worth sharing. My city came out en mass to protest Michael Knowles speaking at the University of Pittsburgh. The protest was student led and organized and most of the protestors were students. This is the 3rd and so far largest protest against transphobic speakers at Pitt. There were approx. 400 people there at one point, although after a firework was set off the crowd shrank to about 250. These are trans kids and young adults fighting for their lives against a man who has said he wants to "eradicate transdenderism" In the very debate they were protesting he advocated for institutionalization of all trans people. They could use the support and encouragement of the wider trans community.
