Phone scam gothic
So my mom sits down and starts telling me about two weird-ass phone calls she had today—she was returning a missed call, and the woman who answered just… sobbed for a minute. I’m sitting here asking, like, a whole minute? Nothing else, just sobbing? Who did you THINK you were calling back?
“United Healthcare, they have my Medicare plan. They’ve been calling me for weeks without leaving any voicemail.”
(Are you sure it was United Healthcare? “It was the same number that’s on my card, I checked, and that’s who the caller ID said it was.”)
Are you sure it was a whole minute? Did YOU say anything?
“Yes, like sixty seconds while I kept going ‘Hello? Hello?’ It sounded like she was having a nervous breakdown, I kept waiting to see if she’d tell me what was even wrong. Finally I just hung up.”
And then my mom turned right around and called back again, because she was gonna get to the bottom of this.
This time she got a different woman, perfectly calm, who wanted to set up “your in-home direct patient care home health visit.”
At this point (at this point?) I’m staring, because no one here currently has anyone coming to the house to help with any kind of medical care. My mom might honestly be the healthiest member of the household, but even I don’t use any home services, herniated discs and all. “Did they have you… confused with someone else?”
“No, she repeated my full name and phone number back to me.”
This lady then started ARGUING with my mother. Why don’t you want us to come to your house to manage your direct patient care? Don’t you need home health care to be managed? Why don’t you need home health care? Why would you not want home health care? “I JUST KIND OF HAVE HIGH CHOLESTEROL?” But don’t you want us to manage your home health care? “WHY DO YOU NEED TO COME TO MY HOUSE TO MANAGE HEALTH CARE I DON’T USE?”
My mom finally hung up on this lady as well, without giving her any real information.
The more we talked about it, the more things we started to notice:
I was incredibly creeped out by the unsolicited use of the word “manage,” for some reason. Very sinister “write me into your will” vibes for some reason—I don’t know what these people want, but they’re gonna get you to sign something over.
My mom got especially stuck on “WHY DO YOU NEED TO COME TO MY HOUSE?!”
My mom has used home health services before… years ago, before she was on Medicare. But this company wouldn’t know about that. However, if you’re on Medicare, you’re over 65. Having not ever dealt with my mother before, someone calling a Medicare user might be playing the odds that a person over 65 is 1) in frail health and 2) old enough to get easily confused.
Fair play to my mom, she’s the one who thought of number spoofing. I’m so busy not answering the phone ever and arranging all my medical communications to happen through passworded portals that I didn’t think of it.
Hey, are you guys, like… holding someone hostage…?
So at this point, I google “United Healthcare scam.”
The “health insurance counselor”
This fraudster will offer help navigating the health insurance marketplace for a fee, capitalizing on people’s confusion about the state-based health exchanges created through the Affordable Care Act.
What to know
This sort of assistance is indeed available and is legitimate, but the people who offer it – also known as “navigators” – aren’t allowed to charge for their services. Also, remember that people with Medicare coverage don’t need to use the state health exchanges. The exchanges are for people under the age of 65, who are looking to enroll in an individual health plan.
Change “navigate” to “manage,” and I think this is it, although the lady on the phone never mentioned any fees. Either my mom didn’t let her get that far, or this is the point of actually getting into someone’s house: persuading them face-to-face to pay something, and potentially refusing to leave until the scammer has worn their target down.
Medicare does not make unsolicited phone calls.
Okay, so it was a scam no matter what it was about. As far as I’m concerned, my mom should contact Actual United Healthcare about it, and I’m here to spread the good word of Never Believing Anyone on the Phone 2k24. I don’t know what to tell you about the lady having the nervous breakdown though.

The way we live in the United States is not normal.
Kirsten Powers:
I began to notice a learned helplessness in the United States, where people don’t revolt at the notion of a college education costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. I wondered why so many people treat it as completely normal that we have GoFundMe campaigns to help people pay for life-saving medical care that their health insurance won’t cover.
I watched as people on social media claimed it was “pro-labor” to tip a person for ringing up your order at a food or coffee chain rather than demanding the multi-millionaire (or billionaire) owner of that company pay their employees a living wage (as is the norm in Europe, where tipping is not expected and the owners of the restaurants and stores are typically not among the uber-wealthy).
I realized there are other places in the world (not just Italy) where life isn’t about conspicuous consumption and ‘crushing’ and ‘killing’ your life goals, where people aren’t drowning in debt just to pay for basic life necessities. There are places where people have free time and where that free time is used to do things they love — not to start a side hustle.
Ends on a hopeful note. The United States can—and should—do better.

Actors and writers want fans to help their Hollywood strike. Here’s how.
How are strikers encouraging audiences to get involved?
SAG-AFTRA and WGA members have used social media to spread information about the strike, detailing how viewers can support entertainment workers’ demands for higher minimum pay, improved safety and more streaming residuals. Among their recommendations for aiding the strike efforts are sharing, liking and commenting on posts about the recently expired SAG-AFTRA contract because “actors are working people just like everyone else.”
“There’s a lot of misconception that our union is about stars and celebrities,” said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator.
Most of the guild’s 160,000 members, he said, are “working actors who are trying to make a living, pay their bills, pay their rent.”
Actors and writers are encouraging fans to join the picket line in their local area to increase strike visibility. They say people can bring signs, water and snacks to picketers. Union-allied organizations such as the Directors Guild of America, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States have thrown their support behind the strike effort in person and online, joining a broader coalition of unions pushing against mistreatment in the workplace.
Crabtree-Ireland said strike supporters could aid the effort by amplifying the union’s demands with social media posts and donations to fundraisers for SAG-AFTRA members. Boycotting projects made by the AMPTP is not the priority, he added.
“We’re not at this time calling for a boycott of anybody. Our focus is on shutting down production. … But that’s not to say that that won’t be something we do in the future,” he said.
How can entertainment workers receive financial support during the strike?
Several organizations have committed to supporting members of SAG-AFTRA and the WGA. Some of the most prominent funds are SAG-AFTRA’s Entertainment Community Fund and nonaffiliated crowdsourced fundraisers like the Union Solidarity Coalition Fund, Groceries for Writers and the Snacklist.
The fundraisers say they provide resources that include mental health support, health insurance, counseling, career resources, budgeting tips and grocery aid.

Raise your voice for gender affirming care:
How to call your legislator or write a letter to the newspaper.
Caveat is that I am based in the US and would assume that these rules more or less apply to other countries but what the hell do I know? Please feel free to repost with tips for your home country, sorry to be so United States about it.
The most recent chapter of my Captain America fanfiction (sorry, did you think I was on tumblr because I am cool?)(because yes! I am!) is a performance arts piece where readers are invited to become a part of the story by taking a political action on the central issue that the characters are working on - which is legislation against gender affirming care.
The rules:
You are 100% welcome to plagiarize anything I’ve written in this fic in your opinion piece.
If you do write a letter to the editor, or call an elected, please leave a comment saying so!
How to contact your US Elected Officials:
You can find your state and federal electeds via this tool: https://openstates.org/find_your_legislator. You can also just search your zip code and [state and federal congress] [school board] etc.
Your opinion is much more influential with state and local electeds - definitely reach out! You do not have to be fancy. Just say your general opinion.
Generally speaking, when you call or email an elected (calling is always, always better, but emailing is always, always better than nothing), they just check a box of like “yay or nay” on an issue. They don’t have a special tracking tool for how many amazing facts you have memorized or how articulate you sound. They won’t debate you. You share your opinion, they ask your zip code, and that’s it.
Pro tip: Put your electeds' office phone numbers in your address book and call after business hours so you get a voicemail. Call drunk. Whatever. Back when I had a ton of health issues and bad health insurance, I used to call Congress every time I was in a waiting room to complain about how much we need health care reform (2-3 times a week).
Just remember, you are likely to get a 20 year old college intern or staffer, so be nice. They are at the bottom of the food chain and possibly not even getting paid money.
Why should I write a letter to the editor?:
The Opinion pages are the most read part of any paper. Politicians have staff that read them every day. Activists I know have gotten personal phone calls from high-level politicians who were either pissed or happy about an opinion piece.
How do I get it published?:
Just search [your local paper or the town where you live] and [publish a letter to the editor] it should pop up. Papers make it pretty easy for you to find the info. Usually there is a 200-word limit for an LTE and a 500-word limit for an op-ed. Op-eds are like a fancy LTE: they are harder to get placed, and you usually need some kind of expertise or hook. Happy to answer questions.
How to write a letter to the editor:
Here is a Planned Parenthood overview on how to write an LTE, it’s looking at abortion rights and specific to the Southwest, but it’s pretty decent. I put my own formula below with purple italics examples from the op-ed in my fic —you can re-order these, mix and match, whatever:
Paragraph 1: Current events + context of why this matters now (local context is good, but national is okay):
This year has seen an alarming array of troubling new laws that aim to make it a crime for doctors to act ethically and in accordance with widely accepted standards of medical care. I would be opposed to any law that comes between a patient and their doctor. But these laws are especially distressing to me, as they target some of our nation's most vulnerable children.
Paragraph 2: Identify yourself, why you care, and why people should listen to you:
Steve says: As a person who knows a little bit about history, I invite you to please join me on the right side of it. Obviously Captain America is famous enough he doesn't need to name his qualifications. You don’t have to have anything fancy, just acknowledge one role you play as a human member of a community. You don’t have to come out as transgender in the newspaper (unless you want to!). Everyone is a million things you can identify as that give you moral standing. If you have a personal story, feel free to share it. You could say: As a parent, I am horrified by the bullying behavior of lawmakers, and would never want to see a law like this come between my child and the healthcare they need. Or: As a student, I want to see all my classmates treated equally. It makes me feel unsafe when I hear about teachers misgendering their students.
Paragraph 3: Make your argument with Value, Vision, Problem, Solution
Paragraph 1 and 2 were about providing context for why people should listen to your argument. Now in Paragraph 3, you make the argument. A great way to frame your arguments are Value, Vision, Problem, Solution. This is a very old and common messaging tool and nothing I made up. Steve’s op-ed in my fic includes these, though slightly out of order. Leading with a value that you feel might have more universal appeal is a great way to reach people who may disagree with you. If you are stressed about how to articulate your argument in any situation, this is a great four-sentence formula to use to organize your thoughts. One thing I like about it is it leads with Value—which you don’t need any special expertise to have. You don’t have to memorize 900 perfect facts. You just have to be against child abuse.
Value: a somewhat universally held value that applies to this situation:
No child should have to live in fear of discrimination. Child abuse is bad. Children should be protected. Everyone deserves a safe place to live.
Vision: the big thing you want to happen—invite people to see your positive vision:
Our nation’s children should not have to witness grown adults drumming up hysteria over nonexistent problems because they aren't tolerant of the beautiful diversity of humanity. (Typically framed more positively than the above. For example: --Transgender children should have access to healthcare/bathrooms/proper pronouns. --I want to see a country where all children are free to play and be themselves. --Transphobic lawmakers should be launched into the sun / etc. )
Problem:
Denying trans youth gender-affirming care is an affront to science and medical ethics. These abhorrent actions cause transgender youth to endure untreated pain, and some will die because of these policies. The very existence of these laws harms all transgender children in our nation, because the laws perpetuate discrimination and give undue affirmation to biased, unethical science driven by an agenda of hate. (This is a great place to add facts or research to back up the problem. There are many powerful statistics showing the disproportionate emotional burden transgender people carry as well as the enormous medically proven success of gender-affirming care, as well as the fact that they violate the US constitution.)
Solution:
I hope you'll join me in thinking about the ways you can join the fight for transgender rights, and the rights and dignity of all LGBTQ people. Together we can protect our transgender youth, and make this moment not a story of when our nation made a grave error that harmed a generation of transgender children, but a time when we chose to stand up and change the course of history for the better. (Here is a great place to list specific bills you support or detest, or call out specific politicians who are either doing good or bad work in this arena. Whenever you can, try and namedrop a politician or a bill name/number—they are definitely tracking those. But you don’t have to!).
That's it! An LTE can be 3 paragraphs, and in general, I recommend the Value, Vision, Problem, Solution framework as one to keep in the back of your mind to organize your points in any context.

hi, my doctor has given me a tentative diagnosis of pcos and the only info I can find about it online that doesn't relate to getting pregnant is your Tumblr post. do you have any sources for the stuff about fatigue, vitamin D deficiency, etc being super common in pcos? cos I've dealt with those forever too. things are clicking into place but also with the way the NHS is I don't know if there's much point confirming the diagnosis (it's only diagnosed with transvaginal ultrasound :c) because the only treatment offered seems to be birth control and fertility treatment.
Good afternoon, nonny. Thanks for reaching out to me! And congratulations on getting a (albeit tentative) diagnosis. I know it might not seem positive, but now you know what you have and what can be done about it. At least, that is how I felt.
When I first made that post I never expected so many women to add their own experiences, talk of their their shock, their anger... or just admit that they had been diagnosed for years but that I somehow taught them things they never knew.
It's been an experience and a half. But I'm very glad that I can spread information and if that helps you, even better.
First of all, to diagnose PCOS, you need to fit 2/3 criteria of the Rotterdam concensus. Irregular periods, higher testosterone, and 12 or more follicles on your ovaries each. So, even without a hormone test you can usually tell whether someone has PCOS. Even so, I would still recommend asking for a hormone test if your health insurance covers it.
Sources
I tried looking up an English source for you since you mentioned NHS. Do keep in mind that women's healthcare is really not researched well and that there will be sources and information that will contradict one another. Here is one such article about the Rotterdam concensus.
As you can see they also mention the insulin resistance in this article, IBS, and fatigue, among other things.
Here is another one.
Here is some information about Insulin resistance in women with PCOS.
And here is some about depression.
You specifically asked for vitamin D so here is a study.
And another.
And one about fatigue.
I will however stress that these are all scientific sources and we all know that it can sometimes be biased, and again, not researched properly. My advice would always be to listen to women who have PCOS before listening to a medical source (no matter how professional it looks.)
My Own Experiences & Tips
I've not been diagnosed with PCOS long, but I have been quite thrown into studying it because it pissed me off interested me so much, and by researching (and reading a lot) here are some things that helped me, and I hope they can help you too.
Vitamin deficiencies are common in women with PCOS, especially Vitamin D. What I do is drink a glass of orange juice every morning with Vitamin D supplements. I take Solgar liquid vitamin drops, but depending on where you live they might have something of a different brand. Remember; take it during a meal.
Carbs make your sugar spike, so try to swap out some high-carb foods for lower carb. This way I have managed to lose weight, and this is often recommended for women with PCOS. And if you have a tendency for disordered eating, this will (generally) be easier than counting calories and going on a diet. After going low-carb my blood sugar level (which was high before) went down to regular levels and according to my doctor, I am now no longer immediately in danger of developing Diabetes Type 2.
Exercise! Especially weight-lifting, since it is mentioned it gives you more energy. Since starting myself, I have also noticed a difference. Here is a link for at home work-outs. Taking daily walks is also recommended for your exposure to sunlight and to help depression and anxiety.
Keep a diary of your symptoms. I have a word document with my own diary, so if anyone is interested I will be posting it. Just send me a message :)
Besides this, you do not need to go on birth control if you do not want to. My gynocologist said to me that once every three months you need to have your period. Women with PCOS can have a period 4 times a year, and that is enough! If you get your period less, then you can take progesteron pills for 7 days, and it will start your period. Again; you only need to use them for 7 days. You could do this four times a year and that would be all. Then again I am not a gynocologist so do talk about this with your doctor.
Another thing is that the fatigue could also very well be a side-effect of low vitamin D, B12, and low iron. My advice would be to get tested monthly if you can, and then try to balance your vitamins and see if this improves your fatigue.
And last but no least I recommend Meals She Eats. I made a post about it before, but even if you ignore everything else that is said (they are a bit woo-woo about organic foods and sugars) they still are very informative about the menstrual cycle. If for any reason you are unable to get your hands on the book do reach out to me in my DM's and I can help you.
If there is anything else I forgot I will reblog this and add more information, and I also will request others do too! The more we learn about PCOS and our cycle, the better.
I hope you have a nice day, anon. And I apologise if it took me a while to get to this ask!

hi! im mae!
well, my name is actually macey... but i like to go by mae online. i don't really care if you call me either. i thought id make a little intro post given i recently created this blog (it is actually a copy of an older one, but i wanted a fresh start).
my bio states most of it, i am 21 years old, i live in the united states, i identify as female, those are pretty much the basics. i consider myself a bit of a hobby collector and a gullible hyperfixater. some of my main hobbies include but are not necessarily limited to:
photography (i adore film, but due to no access to a darkroom anymore, i am primarily digital)
reading (mainly fiction, romance, fantasy, although i do enjoy an article concerning my special interests or mental health)
music (i play guitar, uke, and bass, as well as write my own music and lyrics, im a subpar vocalist though)
music listener (i am very passionate about the music i listen to, if it has resonating lyrics, i will listen to it, some of my favorite artists are mcr, coldplay, billie eilish (altho i think shes been a little iffy lately), eminem, $uicideboy$, brand new, and lana del rey)
crochet (mainly clothing, bags, and plushies)
doodling (i used to want to pursue art career wise, however was very burnt out and scarred by art teachers in high school and decided i couldn't use that for grades or income)
journaling (this is my most recent hobby picked up, however I've stuck with it decently strictly for over a month now and i am adoring it)
cd collecting (this is a passive hobby for me due to costs of CDs and a general life on spotify, however i do love collecting my favorite albums)
tarot and crystals (this is another passive hobby for me. i do not consistently practice tarot nor crystal meditation, however, if given the time and inspiration i will practice them. i wish i was more consistent, but i find these two to be moderately daunting)
I am currently pursuing an ASD diagnosis and am working with a clinic and insurance on finalizing testing, if anyone has gone through this process you know just how exhausting it is. I am diagnosed with ADHD. I believe these two things to be the driving forces in why i am the way i am and if not who i am. i strongly dislike statements such as "you are not your diagnosis" or "its just in your head." i am my diagnosis. it affects all aspects of my life. invalidating or denying that is invalidating me and ignoring a majority of my life and struggles. regardless, i may update here on how that whole process is going, tips i learn along the way, or further revelations that may occur during said process.
that being said i am a huge fidget toy enthusiast and am always looking for new fidget recommendations, i adore tangles, and these little edamame poppers, but id like to have more one-handed quiet fidgets.
some of my special interests are:
mental health and some disorders, i generally love learning how our brains work, both neurotypically and neuro-divergently
currently journaling its my main special interest and i adore looking for new spreads (ik a hobby sh)
crocheting (ik another hobby)
whales and whale sharks!!
collecting things, such as yarn, books, stickers, games, candles, skincare, and makeup (ngl most of it is purely collection)
japanese culture and foooooood
the northern lights
lake superior (i have always loved her and spent a year living a 15min walk from her)
i am a university student as well as working part-time, so the amount of activity on this page may not be consistent, as i already have an ever-changing life with variability in intensity from week to week.
i finally think that is all. if any of this resonates with you, maybe consider following! id love to have you as a mutual if we are alike, and i definitely do not consider myself someone to have many friends, i certainly do not have a best friend, so i am always open to chatting with new people :)

Health Insurance Costs Explained: Monthly Expenses & Coverage
Health insurance is one of the most essential and expensive aspects of healthcare in the United States. It offers financial protection in case of illness, injury, or emergency, but understanding how much it costs and what is covered can be overwhelming. In this article, we’ll break down the factors that influence the monthly costs of health insurance, what these plans generally cover, and tips on how to make the most of your health insurance coverage.
1. Average Monthly Health Insurance Costs in 2024
The average monthly premium for health insurance can vary significantly depending on a variety of factors such as your age, location, health status, and the type of plan you select. According to recent reports, the average monthly premium for an individual in the Health Insurance Marketplace in 2024 is approximately $500 per month. However, the cost can range from as low as $300 per month for basic plans to more than $1,000 for premium plans with extensive coverage.
For families, the average cost is considerably higher. A family plan could cost anywhere from $1,200 to $1,800 per month, depending on the coverage level and where the family resides. While these premiums can seem high, it’s important to note that many people qualify for subsidies, which can lower the overall monthly cost.
2. Factors Affecting Health Insurance Premiums
Several factors influence your monthly health insurance premium. Here are the key components that insurance providers consider:
Age: Older individuals generally pay higher premiums since they are more likely to require medical care. For example, a 60-year-old can expect to pay significantly more than a 25-year-old for the same level of coverage.
Location: Premiums can vary by state and even by county. Healthcare costs, the number of insurers in the area, and state regulations all play a role in how much you’ll pay. Areas with fewer healthcare providers or higher living costs typically have higher premiums.
Health Status: While insurers cannot deny coverage for pre-existing conditions under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), your health can still affect your premiums. Those with chronic illnesses or pre-existing conditions may face higher premiums due to the increased cost of medical care.
Tobacco Use: Smokers or those who use tobacco products generally pay more for health insurance. Insurance companies charge tobacco users up to 50% more for their premiums because tobacco use increases the risk of serious health problems.
Family Size: The number of individuals covered under a health insurance plan can greatly impact the premium. Family plans, which cover multiple people, have higher premiums compared to individual plans.
Type of Plan: The type of plan you select also plays a crucial role. Plans with broader networks of doctors, lower deductibles, or more extensive coverage typically have higher premiums. On the other hand, high-deductible plans usually have lower premiums but require more out-of-pocket spending before insurance kicks in.
3. Health Insurance Coverage: What Does It Include?
Understanding what your health insurance plan covers is just as important as knowing the cost. Health insurance plans generally cover a wide range of services, but the specifics depend on the plan type (e.g., HMO, PPO, EPO, or HDHP). Here’s a breakdown of what most plans typically cover:
Preventive Services: Preventive care, including routine check-ups, vaccinations, and screenings, is usually covered at no cost to you. This helps catch health issues early before they become more severe.
Emergency Services: Emergency care, such as hospital visits or emergency room visits, is typically covered, though you may have to pay a portion of the cost through your deductible or coinsurance.
Hospitalization and Surgery: If you are hospitalized or need surgery, your health insurance will generally cover a large portion of the expenses. However, depending on your plan, you may be responsible for a portion of the cost.
Prescription Drugs: Most plans cover prescription medications, though the exact coverage depends on your plan’s formulary (the list of covered drugs). You may have to pay a copayment or coinsurance for prescriptions.
Mental Health Services: Mental health and behavioral health services are covered under the ACA. This includes therapy, counseling, and other mental health treatments. Coverage for these services can vary, so it’s essential to check if your plan includes the specific services you need.
Maternity and Newborn Care: Health insurance plans are required to cover maternity and newborn care, which includes prenatal visits, labor and delivery, and postnatal care.
Rehabilitative Services: Coverage for rehabilitation services, including physical therapy, is often included in most plans. These services help people recover from injuries or surgeries.
Pediatric Services: If your plan covers children, it will include routine pediatric care, vaccinations, dental care, and vision care.
4. Understanding Out-of-Pocket Costs
Aside from your monthly premium, health insurance plans also involve out-of-pocket costs, which can add up over time. These costs include:
Deductible: The amount you pay for covered health care services before your insurance plan starts to pay. For example, if you have a $1,000 deductible, you'll need to pay the first $1,000 of your medical bills before your insurer starts covering the costs.
Copayments (Copays): These are fixed amounts you pay for covered healthcare services, such as a doctor’s visit or prescription medication. For example, you might pay $20 for a doctor’s visit or $10 for a prescription.
Coinsurance: This is the percentage of the costs of a covered healthcare service that you are responsible for after meeting your deductible. For example, if your coinsurance is 20%, and you have a $200 medical bill, you’ll pay $40, and the insurance company will pay the remaining $160.
Out-of-Pocket Maximum: This is the most you’ll have to pay for covered services in a plan year. After you reach this amount, your insurance will cover 100% of covered medical expenses for the rest of the year.
5. How to Lower Your Health Insurance Premium
If the cost of health insurance is a concern, here are some strategies you can use to lower your premium:
Shop for Subsidies: Depending on your income, you may qualify for subsidies through the Health Insurance Marketplace, which can significantly reduce your premium. Make sure to check your eligibility during open enrollment.
Choose a Higher Deductible Plan: If you’re healthy and don’t expect to need much medical care, you might opt for a higher-deductible plan, which typically has lower monthly premiums.
Stay Healthy: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of illness and medical conditions, potentially lowering your premium over time.
Bundle Coverage: If your employer offers multiple insurance benefits, like dental or vision, bundling them together may provide discounts on premiums.
Conclusion
The cost of health insurance is influenced by a variety of factors including age, location, family size, health status, and the type of plan you select. While premiums can seem high, it's essential to consider the overall value of health insurance. By understanding the factors that affect your costs and carefully evaluating your coverage options, you can find a plan that fits your needs and budget.

IVF Cost in Tanzania
In recent years, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) has emerged as a promising solution for couples facing infertility issues. The procedure involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body and then implanting the embryo into the uterus. While IVF is widely accessible in many countries, the cost can vary significantly based on location and clinic. If you're considering IVF in Tanzania, it's essential to understand the expenses involved, what to expect, and the factors that influence the cost. Understanding IVF Costs in Tanzania The cost of IVF in Tanzania can range widely depending on various factors, such as the clinic's location, the medical team's expertise, and any additional services required. On average, the cost of a single IVF cycle in Tanzania can be estimated to range between $3,000 and $7,000. This is a more affordable option compared to some Western countries, making Tanzania an attractive destination for medical tourism in fertility treatments. Factors That Influence IVF Costs Several factors affect the total cost of IVF in Tanzania:
Clinic Reputation and Location: Well-established clinics with high success rates may charge more for their services. Additionally, clinics located in major cities like Dar es Salaam might have higher prices due to the cost of living in those areas.
Diagnostic Tests: Before starting IVF, diagnostic tests like blood tests, ultrasounds, and fertility assessments are necessary. These preliminary tests may cost an additional $500 to $1,000.
Medication Costs: Fertility medications are crucial for stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. The cost of medication can add another $1,500 to $3,000 to the total IVF price.
Additional Procedures: In some cases, couples may need extra services, such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), embryo freezing, or Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), which can increase the overall expense.
Number of IVF Cycles: The success rate of IVF varies depending on several factors, such as the woman's age and fertility health. Multiple cycles may be needed to achieve a successful pregnancy, increasing the cost accordingly.
Donor Sperm or Eggs: If a donor is required, the cost will be higher due to the expense associated with obtaining and screening the donor material.
Comparing IVF Costs in Tanzania with Other Countries
IVF in Tanzania is generally more affordable compared to Western countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom, where a single IVF cycle can cost upwards of $15,000. The lower cost in Tanzania does not necessarily imply lower quality, as many clinics in the region adhere to international standards of care.
Tips for Reducing IVF Costs
Here are some ways you can reduce the cost of IVF in Tanzania:
Research Multiple Clinics: Compare the prices and services of different fertility clinics in Tanzania. Look for clinics that offer packages, discounts, or financing options.
Consider Medical Tourism: Some clinics offer special rates for international patients. Check if any discounts are available for foreigners seeking fertility treatment.
Check Insurance Coverage: Although IVF may not be covered by all insurance plans, some may partially cover diagnostic tests or medications. It's worth checking with your insurance provider.
Success Rates and Quality of Care
The success rates of IVF treatments in Tanzania are comparable to global standards, with many clinics reporting success rates between 30% and 40% per cycle. This rate can vary depending on factors such as the woman's age, the quality of the sperm and egg, and any underlying medical conditions. It is advisable to choose a clinic with a strong track record and skilled fertility specialists to maximize the chances of a successful outcome.
Finding the Right IVF Clinic in Tanzania
When choosing a fertility clinic, consider the following:
Experience of the Medical Team: Look for clinics with certified specialists in reproductive medicine and embryology.
Available Treatments: Ensure the clinic provides a range of fertility services, such as ICSI, PGT, and cryopreservation.
Patient Reviews and Success Stories: Read reviews and testimonials from former patients to get a sense of the clinic’s reputation and patient satisfaction.
Conclusion
IVF in Tanzania offers a cost-effective solution for couples struggling with infertility. By understanding the factors that influence IVF costs, you can better prepare for the financial investment and make informed decisions. With clinics offering quality care at competitive prices, Tanzania has become a promising destination for fertility treatments.
