Codeshare to include Flights From Israel to Three U.S. Gateways Under the new agreement, Delta will add their code for El Al flights to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) from five U.S. airports: New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Boston Logan Airport (BOS), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Miami International Airport (MIA), and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). In turn, when Delta resumes flying to Tel Aviv, they will add El Al’s code to inbound flights to JFK, Boston, and Los Angeles, as well as an additional 280 flights across the United States. In addition, members of both airlines loyalty programs will have the ability to earn and redeem miles on each other’s airlines. Delta SkyMiles flyers can earn miles or use them for flights aboard El Al, while El Al Matmid members can earn points when flying aboard Delta flights. “Delta remains steadfast in our long-time commitment to serving consumers and businesses who depend on convenient, high-quality air service to and from Tel Aviv,” Alain Bellemare, president of international at Delta, said in a press release. “Through our codeshare agreement with EL AL, we will offer customers more convenient travel options between North America and Israel.” The move comes as all three legacy U.S. carriers paused international flights to Israel amid the war with Hamas. Avelo Airlines Expands Base in Wilmington
Avelo Airlines, a U.S. startup, is adding a second Boeing 737 to its Wilmington Airport (ILG) base and launching nine new routes from the Delaware airport, which began without airline service in 2023. The extension, announced on April 20, represents a drastic shift in ILG's fortunes, which lost a lone route run by Frontier Airlines to Orlando (MCO) in June 2022. However, on February 1, Avelo launched a route to Orlando and built an aircraft base with one 737-700. Wilmington was soon joined by Florida cities Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Fort Myers (RSW), Tampa (TPA), and West Palm Beach (PBI). All five routes are served twice a week. Avelo plans to add a second 737-800 to the base in June and replace the 149-seat 737-700 at ILG with a 189-seat 737-800. Nine more routes will shortly be added, providing a substitute for the nearby Philadelphia International (PHL), particularly for flights to Florida. Wilmington Airport, located 25 miles south of PHL and 75 miles east of Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), was traditionally disregarded by airlines, with the exception of intermittent Frontier service. Avelo said it will hire 35 more people at the airport, bringing its total number of employees to more than 100. The airline will serve 14 cities from ILG by the end of June, including seven in Florida. From Wilmington, the airline will begin service to nine cities between June 22 and June 28. The routes will be covered twice every week, with the exception of Myrtle Beach (MYR), South Carolina, which will be served three times per week. Nashville (BNA), Daytona Beach (DAB), and Melbourne (MLB) in Florida; Charleston (CHS) and Greenville/Spartanburg (GSB) in South Carolina; Raleigh/Durham (RDU) and Wilmington (ILM) in North Carolina; and Savannah (SAV) in Georgia are among the new destinations. According to a statement from Andrew Levy, CEO of Avelo, "We are happy with the positive reaction Avelo has gotten since our airline took flight in February. We're thrilled to introduce Wilmington to these nine additional routes to some of our most well-liked east coast destinations "based on this initial customer response to our first five Florida routes." Our goal is to be the airport of choice for those in Delaware, southern Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland who want reasonable rates, good service, and a pleasant airport experience." The acquisition of a second 737-800 and the swapping out of a 737-700 are in line with what Avelo is doing at its hub in RDU. The airline, which started operating in April 2021, has bases at MCO, RDU, Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), and Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) in southern California. Meanwhile...
November 13 - December 4
Our road trip came to and end and we spent a few days just outside of Denver to get some errands done to prepare for Elkhorn, New York City, and Colombia. After Sean did some work for his customers we went to our storage unit to pick up some bags we packed (right at the door) to bring with us.
Our next stop was Elkhorn to spend time with Sean’s family and take care of a few things... a few major things! The boys all built a fence in Sean’s parents backyard, and maaaaan was that more work than I expected. And, more time consuming! While Sean was doing that, I went through every inch of the camper getting rid of what we didn't need, storing what was staying put, and packing us both for Colombia. Depending on the part of Colombia you are in, the weather is very different. The equator passes through the southern part of the country, but even with that the temperature ranges from 40-100 degrees. So, we had to pack summer clothes with just a few warmer layers. I did read that Colombians mostly wear jean pants every day, no matter how hot it is. Well, I guess we’re packing plenty of jeans!
After a lot of hard work, the fence was finished. Saying goodbye to Jaxon was so so sad. But honestly, Sean and I wouldn't have felt comfortable leaving him with anyone else. He is in the absolute best hands! Thank you so much Mike, Sue, Caite, and Jesse!!!
In New York we did the usual; we saw all of my fam, some friends, and ate A LOT (including proseco and apps). Shocking, right? Well, over the course of the plane rides from Nebraska to New York, I became a vegan. Regardless, we still ate a lot :)
I had been learning about and playing around with the idea of being “plant-based” over the last month or so. But watching the documentary “What The Health” on Netflix turned me into a vegan JUST LIKE THAT! My family was not pleased with this announcement; what would I eat for thanksgiving!? Well shortly after, Sean decided to be vegetarian, or at least vegetarian most days out of the week. He decided that after watching “Game Changer” which is another dope documentary on Netflix that talks about the power of plant based diets! Anyway, enough of that.
Thanksgiving (and my birthday) came and went. We did some last minute shopping for our trip, packed up our backpacks (I had to redo this about 3 times because I was packing too much), and before we knew it, it was time to go.
Next stop: Medellin, Colombia! (But first, a long layover in FLL).

For my first post, I would like to share some important traveller information for those traveling within the United States. There are easy ways you can adjust your travel plans to meet your budget. One of these ways is flying in and out of the cheapest airports. According to Ranking Rates, the top ten cheapest airports in the country to fly out of are:
1. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)

4. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)

2. Phoenix Intl’ Airport: Once stuck on a three hour layover, I sat down with my laptop at a table with a view. The airport was crowded with working/traveling people.

COMMENTARY:
I am an Army brat and Ranger qualified combat veteran. I ran a recon platoon on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and, aside from that, I was pretty much a plain vanilla 1LT trying to avoid being noticed by the other side.
I was raised around Colonels and Generals on a post where there were more generals than Lieutenants. Literally. Well, almost literally. At one time, there were 17 generals living on post. Re-thinking it a bit, there were definitely more generals living on post than Company Commanders, for sure and it was a close call with the Lieutenants.
Lt Cols out-numbered everybody. Lieutenant Colonels are the demi-gods of von Moltke’s general staff model the US Army employs. We’ve added bells and whistles from the lessons learned, such as G5, which is Civil Affairs and was added by Marshall in anticipation of the Atlantic Charter and Marshall Plan, and from the lessons learned from the lingering costs from the failure Reconstruction.
Majors are junior Lt Cols and are in a sort of apprenticeship. Majors are demi-gods who are generally grounded with specific units and do not generally roam the battle space with messages from Galahad. Battalions and Brigades use a lot of majors at nexus points. like S2/S3
S1 and S4 are actually operated by sergeants and company clerks below division and regiment. Regiments used to be the operational strata of the US Army until the end of WWII and carreid a fll staff. Company clerks prepared morning reports, which were supervised by compentent First Sergeants and reviewed by the CO and X) on a regular basis. As XO, I at least glanced at the morning report in a bunch once a week and keep up with the paper flow without interfering.
It pleased First Sergeant Estrada, who was a typically perfect Top Sergeant. Fuck my superior officers: if I could please the senior NCOs in my life, that chances were I was pleasing everybody above me. And leaning my job.
Regiments were generally shuffled out of the deck after WWII. Regiments were, orginally, the well regulated militias in the British military tradition that we adopted for much the same reason: recruiting and manpower. All the British regiments continue to maintain their regimental system because they go back to Hastings, if not the Romans. Among other things, the 2nd Amendment is a mechanism for growing a regimental system in new territories as they appeared on Old Glory as a star. Imagine each one of those stars being an Army post, pinning down the rule of law and manifest destiny, geogrpahically, from sea to shining sea.
So, in Britain, the Cold Stream Guards was holding down the fabric of the secular rule of law for the Crown and the Queen’s Own Yoemanry. And they are like semi-pro volunteer fire departments, drawing on local talent and training them to keep and bear the tools of their trade in a military manner more or less common to all the other regiments in the British Army.
We have a 2nd Amendment because we were growing a military tradition at the leading edge of manifest destiny and we couldn’t employ royal decrees to establish those organizations, but we needed to keep them connected to the secular rule of law represented by the US Constituitons. And the 2nd Amendment is an on-going recruiting mechanism that guarantees the right of the individual to submit themselves to the UCMJ and to respond the military needs of the nation.
So, as a consequence of the 2nd Amendment, the regiment as the basis of manpower and recruiting, became redundant and was eliminated as an intermediary command thanks to the general staff system and Lieutenant Colonels as demi-gods.
The division, of course, dates it’s pedigree back to the Roman legions. It is the smallest military organization which can be designed to operate independently and permanently as needed. The two Legions at Caesarea werel heavy headquarter legions with at tleast 10,000 men, each, if not larger. The Roman legions employed regiments on the British model and they could attach and detach as required, but with the mobility and communications of the 101st Air Mobile Division, a brigadeer as division S3 could orchestrate the operations of brigades and their battalions as easily as the old regimental intermediary without the disadvanteges of intermediary commands.
As an instructor with the Patrolling Committee of the 3rd Ranger Combany in Harmony Chruch, Georgia, I don’t remember meeting the Company Commander, who was probably a Major. I’m sure I reported to him:; I just don’t remember the event.
I was on the A Team of the Patrolling Committee, with B, C and D teams. The A Team leader was a Captian with two tours under his belt. I can’t remember his name off hand, but he was a Plebe at West Point when MacArthur delivered his valedictory in 1962. CSM Roy was the Top sergeant,and there were 5 other senior NCOs and two Staff Sergeants, all with Screaming Eagles, Ivy Dividion and Special Forces flashes on their right sleves two other captains and me and another lieutenant. It was a team, not a chain of command.
On the B Team was a Captain Ranger up for the CMH. He was instantly legendary for going through Ranger School as “Ranger Ranger”. I mean, there was a certain metaphysical necessity for being up for a CMH.
In Vietnam, I was scared out of a military career by my Brigade Commander. That’s all I know about him. This was at the time William Calley was being court martialed for being a platoon leader in a combat zone AND the Army at the Pentagon/DefSec level was going through a violent transformation as a result of Tet 68, The Army I grew up in ceased to exist in 1968 and would become the New Action Army of the All Volunteer Military. This officer was my dad’s age and rank and, suddenly, he is ranting about the NVA like Rush Limbaugh venting about Title IX. I hadn’t even been in combat and I knew I had no future as a soldier.
I was the Recon Platoon Leader of the 1st Battalion, 22nd Regiment “Regulars by God”. During the 50s, the Army experimented with all sorts of different system designs, the ROAD division, the Pentangle Division and a bunch more, and the Regiment was totally flushed out of the system until they discovered that, for reasons of unit cohesion and sustained performance, the traditons of the regiments were golden.
The 22nd Regiment goes back to the War of 1812, at least, where they earned the sobriquet “Regulars by God!” from their British opponents, who expected to be facing the lynch mob from January 6 but got the DC National Guard, instead. Under the current organizational status of the 22nd Regiment, the 1st Battalion had the motto “Regulars by God” and we were authorized to wear a black bandana worn cavalry style with the legend embroidered on it. The 2nd Battalion was the “Walking Regulars” without the bandana and the 3rd Battalion was armor mounted and I don’t know much about them. There warn’t much use for APCs on the Ho Chi Minh trail. We’d see them at intermediate LZs coming and going from the field to base camp stand down to the field.
I had five Battalion COs, As Recon, I reported to him, as opposed to a Company CO. My first Bn CO was being evacuated from Fire Base Cascade as I was waiting in orbit to hook up with my platoon. He had shot himself in the foot. For some reason, that never seemed to bode ill for me, but was merely a matter of fact.
My second Bn Co was Ltc Barney Neal, a big florid Irish officer who was killed in a LOH coming off a fire base on a little snoop and poop. This firebase was a typical 2000m topographical feature with it’s top bulldozed clean with a battery of 105s and most of an infantry company. SOP was for the slicks to launch themselves over the edge of the cliff, dive down about a third of the way to get air speed and lift (especially if it was hot) and then flare up and head up to altitude out of the range of .51 cal. This time, the flare didn’t happen.
I didn’t see much of him: we were out in the woods most of the time and my reports satisfied the S2/S3, who was anouther Ranger. He was a Major and we were all business in our relationship. It was a very comfortable fit for me. He was still running the S2/S3 shop when I left for DEROS. He offered me a deal with somebody up the chain of command at IFFY to take a look at the AO we had patrolled to see if anything had changed for an month early out, which I took. It turns out, things had changed, but that;s another story.
My next CO was Ltc John Y.S. Ching, a Chinese American officer. We called him “Blinky”: he had a mannerism of really squeezing his eyes shut as a normal pattern and it was hard to miss. I came as close to winning a Silver Star under his command as I would come, but we got there just at sunset and the lights went out and the monsoon set in and, in the morning, whoever had been there didn’t leave instructions on where to find them. Helicopter pilots claimed there were 800 NVA sunning themselves on the side of a hill about a click and a half away where we were dug in for local patrolling and we got saddled up and moving before I got the order to move to the sound of firing and almost got there in time to re-create Custer’s material situation at the Little Big Horn, but with air and artillary support. I thought it seemed like a fair fight.
We sat on that hill side for about a week, trying to find any entrances to tunnel systems. Ltc Ching came out twice, once with dogs and once just to praise my platoon for their responsiveness to the situation. We also had a chaplain fly in, a Baptist minister who was game but not enthusiastic to be this far beyond the firebase that provided the 105 support.
Right around thanksgiving, the 4ID was rotated out of Vietnam and back to Fort Huachucha and the 1/22 was detached and became part of the stay-behind force as the US Army unassed Vietnam. We moved by truck convoy from An Khe through a pass where the Viet Mihn had caught the French in a devastating ambush before Dien Bien Phu to Tuy Hoa to be perimeter defense, It had been an Air Force Tactical Air Base and an in-country R&R station for the Air Force. It was on the South China Sea and had an Officers Club and Service Club and a certain Surfs-Up ambience until the Infantry got there and cluttered up the social life.
I became XO of E Company and my CO was Cpt Ferguson, a black officer and, of course, First Sergean Estrada. This was about the time Lt. Flapp appeared in the Beatle Baily comic strip. Cpt Ferguson and his buddy, Cpt Washington, another black officer, loved to yuck it up over Lt Flapp. It was very pleasant duty, serving with them.
At the time, 1970 - 1971, Black Power was representing in the military community and there had been riots on aircraft carriers from the SDS Resistance agenda that exploited the visibility of the Black Power movement for their purposes. I had been witness to the SDS anti-war activities for 4 years on campus and recognized the indicators of an active insurgency all around the lifers including the Black Power activists, I was dealing with a street-legal black power agitator in my company and there were fights routinely at the Service Club that had racial overtones but were far more insurgent than the senior leadership recognized.
The object of the exercise was to create a general mutiny in Vietnam like the Battleship Potemkin, but the organizers ran into a number of problems, First of all, the combat soldiers they needed to provoke an effective rebellion didn’t harbor any illusions about the fantasy that the NVA would welcome them as comrades in the global revolution. The combat troops were content to hunker down until DEROS and go back to the World and forget the whole thing.
A second thing that happened was that the Army in Vietnam began to fall apart so fast that the critical mass required for a successful revolution simply melted away. And people weren’t just getting out of Vietnam: they were getting off the plane and out of the Army faster than the Draft Lottery could replace them, so the strategy of the SDS to get into the belly of the beast and cut their way out ran out of gas as the Army ran out of Vietnam. There were still the same issues in Germany and stateside, but, by the time “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” went up the charts. the SDS went down the tubes of historic significance. Kent State was actually its last hurrah, so to speak.
At some point, Ltc Ching rotated out and Ltc John Madigan rotated in. Madigan had been the CO of the Old Guard’s Ceremonial Brigade and was a wonderful officer. At that time, Black Power activists were going out of their way avoiding saluting and Ltc Madigan would initiate the honor which virtually any soldier will reflexively return. He never wasted any time counseling this disrespect but he began to impose his will by example until it ceased to be an issue in the battalion.
About this time, I prevented a race riot from occuring in our company area. The Black Power agitator had been working on one particular soldier who wasn’t particularly sophisticated and had come from basically a share-cropper back ground and, one day, this individual went a bit postal and began attacking one of my white NCOs. I managed to separate the two and ordered the sergeant and his platoon back into their quarters while I dragged his assailient through the company area to the ready room to get help. At some point, the soldier refused to go any further by falling to the ground, where I was holding him when I looked up and this street legal agitator was coming at me with a crowd of blacks with sticks and bad attitudes and I said to him “Help me” and they slowed down and pushed me, gently, aside and took command of my soldier until an ambulance arrived and began his medical evacuation to the states.
That was the last time we had any racial issues at Tuy Hoa Air Base and it all started with Ltc Madigan refusing not to render the courtesy of a salute to a fellow warrior, even if he had to do it first.
Ltc Madigan was always after me to get a haircut. I was becoming grossly insubordinate towards the end of my tour, but mostly expressed by not getting a haircut every week. Or month. And, one day, he pulled me up and accompanied me to the barbershop, where we both got correct, no harm, no foul.
I was already 99.99% sure I was getting out of the Army, but I sort of held out hope to the moment I had to surrender my ID card at Ft Lewis on the way out the door that I could talk myself into playing the game and making it a career. I didn’t have a Plan B and, so, I ask Ltc Madigan for career advice and he told me, honestly, he couldn’t recommend any particular path because things were apparently even more fucked up in the Pentagon than I realized. He was unsure about his own future and told me that in so many words. It made me a little sad because he was such a wonderful officer that it seemed a shame not to continue to march in step with men such as these.
If you haven’t ever listened to MacArthur’s valedictory, you owe it to yourself if you are serving or have served. I don’t know what the new action army is like, but, once upon a time, who would not want to be a man among men such as these?

Watch: World’s Largest Low-Profile STS Cranes Arrive At Port Everglades
Broward County’s Port Everglades received three Super Post-Panamax container gantry cranes, the largest of their kind worldwide. The new cranes are part of the Port’s $3 billion 20-Year Master/Vision Plan Update, which will add new cargo berths, expand cruise and energy capacity and improve navigation channels to handle larger ships.
“The state-of-the-art cranes are pivotal to allowing our customers to grow their businesses in Broward County so that they can compete in the global marketplace,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Jonathan Daniels. “The advantage is that the extended reach of the cranes enables customers to work larger ships and gain economies of scale, thus making Port Everglades more competitive.”

The three 175-foot (53 meters) high Super Post-Panamax container gantry cranes, valued at $13.8 million each, have the ability to handle containers stacked eight high from a ship’s deck and reach 22 containers across the ship’s deck. Port Everglades’ existing seven gantry cranes in the Southport area, where most of the containerized cargo operations take place, are only 151-feet high and limited to containers stacked six high and can reach across 16 containers.
Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. Inc. (ZPMC) designed and manufactured the cranes as special “low-profile” models that extend out rather than up to avoid the flight path of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which is less than two miles away. They are reportedly the largest low-profile container gantry cranes ever designed and built. Port Everglades has an option to buy three more of the same cranes.

In addition to purchasing the new cranes, the seven existing low-profile Post-Panamax gantry cranes in Southport will be upgraded to a lift capacity of 65 tons from the current 46.5 tons that will add the capability to perform twin-picks (lifting two containers at a time).
All the cranes are being fitted with lighting that reduces the impact on nesting sea turtles by using lower light levels and limits the amount of light that spreads on the ground.

The new cranes are part of the largest expansion project in the Port’s history, which includes lengthening the Southport Turning Notch from 900 feet (274 meters) to 2,400 feet (731.5 meters) to allow for up to five new cargo berths which will add about 730,000 TEUs (the industry’s standard volume measurement of 20-foot equivalent units) to the Port’s capacity. Construction for the $471 million project is ongoing and expected to be complete by late 2022. The Southport Turning Notch Extension project is anticipated to support an estimated 3,045 construction jobs and 5,529 direct, induced and indirect local/regional, according to a study produced by nationally recognized maritime research firm Martin Associates.
