September 2nd - National Hummingbird Day
The Hummingbird Handbook by John Shewey
Hummingbirds inspire an unmistakable sense of devotion and awe among bird lovers. Gardeners, too, love the company of hummingbirds, not only for their beauty, but also for their role as pollinators. Brimming with astonishing facts, practical advice, and important ecological information, The Hummingbird Handbook is a must-have guide to attracting, understanding, and protecting hummingbirds. From advice on feeders to planting and landscaping techniques that will have your garden whirring with tiny wings, lifelong birder John Shewey provides all you need to know to entice these delightful creatures. An identification guide makes them easy to spot in the wild, with stunning photographs, details on plumage variations, and range maps showing habitats and migration patterns. Need more joy in your life? Let this guide and nature’s aerial jewels help you create a lively haven.
The Hummingbird's Gift by Sy Montgomery
Hummingbirds fascinate people around the world. The lightest birds in the sky, hummingbirds are capable of incredible feats, such as flying backwards, diving at speeds of sixty-one MPH, and beating their wings more than sixty times a second. Miraculous creatures, they are also incredibly vulnerable when they first emerge from their eggs. That’s where Brenda Sherburn comes in.
With tenderness and patience, she rescues abandoned hummingbirds and nurses them back to health until they can fly away and live in the wild. In The Hummingbird’s Gift, the care that Brenda provides her peanut-sized patients is revealed and, in the process, shows us just how truly amazing hummingbirds are.
This is the first volume of the "Hummingbirds' Gift" series.
Hummingbirds by Glenn Bartley
With their glorious colors, glittering iridescence, astonishing powers of flight, and many characteristics unique in the world of birds, hummingbirds are extraordinary - true jewels of nature. This beautiful book is a celebration of all aspects of hummingbirds and their world. It features hundreds of the most spectacular photographs of hummingbirds ever taken, exquisite illustrations, and a lively, readable text that presents the latest scientific information and includes up-to-date details about every species.
A familiar sight across much of the Americas, hummingbirds have long captured the imagination and played an important part in myths, legends, and other aspects of human culture. Today, hummingbirds are among the most popular of all birds, sought after by serious and casual birders alike. They inspire questions in anyone lucky enough to see them. How can they fly like that? Why are they so colorful? How many are there? Where and how do they live? How do they survive? This book answers these and many other questions, providing an enlightening and enjoyable guide to hummingbirds that can only deepen their wonder.
The Glitter in the Green by Jon Dunn
Hummingbirds are a glittering, sparkling collective of over three hundred wildly variable species. For centuries, they have been revered by indigenous Americans, coveted by European collectors, and admired worldwide for their unsurpassed metallic plumage and immense character. Yet they exist on a knife-edge, fighting for survival in boreal woodlands, dripping cloud forests, and subpolar islands. They are, perhaps, the ultimate embodiment of evolution's power to carve a niche for a delicate creature in even the harshest of places.
Traveling the full length of the hummingbirds' range, from the cusp of the Arctic Circle to near-Antarctic islands, acclaimed nature writer Jon Dunn encounters birders, scientists, and storytellers in his quest to find these beguiling creatures, immersing us in the world of one of Earth's most charismatic bird families.

9 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Roanoke, VA
Roanoke is a popular tourist destination, whether you're a culture vulture seeking out unique museums and attractions or an active vacationer seeking out outdoor adventures. The city is a four-season destination for avid hikers, rock climbers, recreational boaters, and sportfishing enthusiasts, and is located in the picturesque Roanoke Valley in southwestern Virginia. In-town greenways, cultural diversions, diverse dining, and unique shopping discoveries await urban explorers. Whatever your vacation style, keep our list of Roanoke's top attractions and things to do handy.
1. Mill Mountain Park & the Roanoke Star
Mill Mountain Park, which is home to the famous Roanoke Star (also known as the Mill Mountain Star), has more than 10 miles of multi-use trails (hiking, walking, and biking) where visitors can experience the region's all-season natural beauty.
Take the Mill Mountain Star Trail, a 3.5-mile round-trip from the base trail, to the summit of Mill Mountain, the city's highest point at 1,703 feet, for a moderately challenging hike. Hikers are rewarded with two scenic overlooks atop the mountain after climbing 838 feet in elevation. The Star Trail parking lot, located just off Riverland Road SE at the Star/Wood Thrush Connector, has plenty of free parking and clear signage.
Connect with the short Watchtower Trail for the best panoramic views and photos right at the base of the Roanoke Star, one of Virginia's most famous landmarks. The National Register of Historic Landmarks has listed this unusual landmark, which was built in 1949 as a temporary Christmas decoration by the local merchants association. The giant star, at 89 feet in height, is America's largest star. It is visible from up to 60 miles away and is lit every evening until midnight.
Hikers are welcome to bring their leashed dogs, and there are picnic tables, restrooms, and water along the Mill Mountain Spur Trail en route to the Discovery Center, a naturalist centre with exhibits on the park, local wildlife, and trail maps. Mill Mountain Zoo, a small but lively enclave with local critters such as the Indian crested porcupine, red wolf, and yellow-spotted side-necked turtle, will appeal to children of all ages.
2. Carvins Cove Natural Reserve
Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, with more than 60 miles of trails surrounding an 800-acre reservoir, is known among locals as a haven for off-road mountain biking. The reserve, which is the second largest municipal park in the United States, spans nearly 13,000 acres, the majority of which is protected by the state of Virginia's largest conservation easement.
Trail maps are available for purchase, and bikers can get local advice on which trails are best suited for their experience level at Just The Right Gear, a cycling shop near the Bennett Springs parking lot (one of three reserve entrances — the others are Marina and Timber View). There are also rentals of high-end bikes and gear.
On the Easy Street, Kit & Kaboodle, The Skillet, and Enchanted Forest trails, beginners will find a gentler rise and more flats. On the Comet, Gauntlet, Hoe Trail, and Clownshead, riders seeking more difficult challenges will get exactly what they want. On the most difficult trails, expect to gain up to 2,400 feet in elevation.
Along these well-kept trails, riders will encounter packed dirt, loose gravel, and tamped soil. Canoeing (equipment rentals and instruction are available) and fishing are also popular activities at Carvins Cove.
3. Smith Mountain Lake
Smith Mountain Lake, one of Virginia's most popular — and the state's largest — has nearly 500 miles of shoreline, earning it the title of "Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains." Because state fisheries keep the lake well stocked, SML, as it's known by locals, has an especially impressive striped bass population. Anglers can book half- or full-day charters with a number of licenced guides who have plenty of experience traversing the 21,000-acre lake. They'll provide bait, equipment, and all of the necessary expertise to ensure that those fishing have a safe and enjoyable time on the water.
Crappies, bluegills, largemouth and smallmouth bass, as well as stripers, are among the tasty fish that make freshwater fishing at SML a popular tourist destination.
Waterskiing and wakeboarding, boating and sailing, and jet skiing are all fun activities to do on the lake. Swimming is also available at a family-friendly beach, and there are several golf courses nearby.
4. Roanoke Valley Greenways
The interconnected Roanoke Valley Greenway allows visitors to walk or bike along miles of trails in the area, which are safe, well-populated, and well-maintained. A popular trail in and around Roanoke is right along the Roanoke River, where deer, herons, geese, and other wildlife can be seen even in the city. Vic Thomas Park, just off Memorial Drive south of the river, is a great place to start your exploration. From there, you can easily join the Roanoke River Greenway.
A short distance away is the well-known Black Dog Salvage. Every visit to this nationally recognised purveyor of reclaimed architectural, commercial, and industrial fixtures and elements yields a fascinating, one-of-a-kind inventory. Visitors come from all 50 states to see Black Dog, which specialises in doors, windows, wrought iron, period lighting, garden statuary, and other specialty home components.
Head southeast on the Roanoke River Greenway towards Wasena Park after visiting Black Dog. At the Wasena Skate Park, kids can be seen hanging ten on their longboards. The park is always bustling with activity, and the locals' fancy footwork on their skateboards and blades is entertaining to watch.
On your way to the Tinker Creek Greenway, continue on the greenway and cross the Mill Mountain Greenway. Follow that road north for less than a mile and reward yourself with a picnic at Fallon Park's picnic area.
5. Taubman Museum of Art
The Taubman Museum of Art, one of the city's newest attractions (it opened in 2008), is a must-see for art lovers and casual culture consumers alike. The museum's permanent collection of 2,000 unique pieces is spread across 11 different galleries, including works by Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins, Purvis Young, and John Cage, and is housed in a stunning modern design by renowned architect Randall Stout.
Visiting exhibits featuring work by some of America's best artists, including John James Audubon and Norman Rockwell, to name a few, are common. Photographic, folk art, and design-related exhibits are among the other highlights.
If you're travelling with children, look into children's programmes, such as hands-on workshops and interactive displays. On-site amenities include a café.
6. McAfee Knob
McAfee Knob is one of the most photographed places on the Appalachian Trail, thanks to its incredible vistas and spectacular rock overhang perch. The 3.5 miles of intermediate-to-difficult trails that lead up to the knob from the Virginia 311 parking lot are popular with hikers.
Climbers know it for the more than 70 gnarly sandstone and slick quartzite boulders that make for days of mini-summits. The majority of boulders are between 10 and 20 feet tall, with many crimps, jugs, pockets, and edges. Bring pads, lunch, and a buddy; it's never a good idea to go rock climbing alone, and McAfee is often deserted.
Another popular recreational area in Roanoke is the recently re-opened Explore Park, which is located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. The park features 1,100 acres of breathtaking scenery, numerous walking and hiking trails, as well as thrilling ziplines and a treetop adventure course that is appropriate for families with younger children. It also has a visitor centre and a gift shop, as well as camping and rustic cabins.
7. Bottom Creek Gorge Preserve
Bottom Creek Gorge Preserve is a popular destination for birders, nature lovers, and photographers. Bottom Creek, located less than 20 miles south of Roanoke, is one of the most important headwaters for the Roanoke River, and it offers visitors several well-marked trails to enjoy the vast hardwood forest, unspoiled landscape, and Virginia's second highest waterfall.
For the best vantage point to photograph the 200-foot cascading waterfall, the second tallest in Virginia, photographers should take the Red Trail (the longest trail here, at five miles round-trip). Bring a long/telephoto lens because the overlook at the end of the trail offers a clear, open shot, but the falls are a long way away. A side path off the Yellow Trail leads to other viewpoints of the falls.
8. Roanoke City Market
The historic City Market, also known as the Farmers' Market by locals, is open all year and offers boutique shopping, local produce, flowers, meat and cheese, local dining favourites, and some of Virginia's best people-watching. Pay close attention to the market's four mosaic tiled entrances, each of which contains over 2,000 pounds of porcelain tiles that reveal a little bit of the history of this storied public space.
9. Roanoke Pinball Museum
We’ve recently started a new family hobby – vintage record collecting! In keeping with this new found connection over the beloved old, we were delighted to take our girls to the Roanoke Pinball Museum and show them how we entertained ourselves long before the internet.
From the 1932 styles to the slightly more modern Munster’s machine which had a baby pinball inside the bigger one to play, you could get lost in here playing over 65 machines for hours.

M. Jane Stroup
Above: Jane Stroup(l), Edith Andrews, Beverly Hall (r)
In 2011, the MMA’s former librarian, M. Jane (Jane) Stroup passed away. At that time, I wrote a piece that you can read below. Jane was an integral part of my time at the MMA growing up. I was lucky enough to have her as a friend and as a guide. In fact, growing up at the MMA as I did, I was incredibly lucky to be surrounded by an incredible group of women who served as mentors and friends and who showed me the paths that make up my life today. As I touch something or walk through a space at the MMA or along Vestal Street, I continue to feel their presence and love for this unique organization. It was their work and support that put us where we are today and where we continue to build upon what they did as they continued Maria Mitchell’s legacy. I still hear their voices and laughter (oh, the laughter!) and remember them as they guide me in my work. Recently, Jane’s estate was finalized and closed, and a gift was left by her for the MMA. This bequest is for our endowment and we hope that people will match her generous gift of $50,000.00. I have and hope you will too.
On November 4 {2011}, the MMA lost a dear friend. M. Jane Stroup, Ph.D., known to all as Jane, was the MMA’s first year-round librarian, her tenure running from 1970 through the spring of 1994. Jane was known for her quick wit, her fantastic annual reports presented to the membership in verse, and for being the year-round presence of the MMA for so many years – the Library lights were the only ones on Vestal Street in the MMA complex of buildings. Jane was a lover of the natural world – from birds to wildflowers – capturing these in her sculpture and her poetry. She was a member of the Nantucket Artists Association. An English and Biology major in college, Jane went on to earn her Master’s Degree and then her Ph.D. at New York University. She moved to Nantucket in 1968 and would later also become well-known for the wonderful garden and greenhouse she shared on Candle House Lane with Joan Manley. She was a woman of many talents, gracing all with her humor, love, and incredible knowledge and intelligence.
In 1987, Jane was thanked by the MMA’s president Jane Merrill for her long service to the MMA. In her public thank you, President Merrill said “Although many science libraries have bigger collections than the Maria Mitchell Science Center, none is more friendly, better organized, or better cared for . . . The user is assured of a warm welcome . . . ” She kept the history of the MMA alive and enlivened the annual meetings where all awaited her annual report in verse.
In honor of her, we reprint here one of her much anticipated annual reports – this one is from 1978 – and we thank her for all the wonderful years she gave to the MMA. Those of us who knew her, those who were lucky to have been touched by her – and even appear in her annual report – will miss her.
Annual Meeting 1978
Listen, dear members, and you shall hear
Of a most exciting library year.
The Winter of seventy seven and eight,
Our doors were open early and late.
Folks came from far and near.
They wanted to know of the sun and stars,
Solar heat, black holes and life on Mars,
Lasers and quasars and quarks and charms
Kept the Librarian full of alarms!
How did the universe ever get going
Could be beyond a poor mortals knowing.
How it will end is full of conjecture
Suitable stuff for an M. M. lecture.
The snow was swept, and the birds were fed
The goldfish slept in their icy bed.
Nice Mr. Lucas took our picture,
So now we’ve become a permanent fixture.
The birders were busy as they could be
Spotting the birds on land and sea
Indeed one study, it is said,
Even counted those birds long dead!
Spring brought the tourists who like to come early
But finding things closed are apt to become surly
It was Library Week across the nation
So we cheered them up with a celebration
Real live authors and cookies and punch
Made for a lively bunch.
Then snowdrops and crocuses started blooming
And Library business started booming!
What is that tree that grows so tall?
What is that bird that looks so small?
What is that flower that grows by the road?
How do you tell a frog from a toad?
Why does the tide go in and out?
What is ethology all about?
We searched the books, and we shared a laugh,
And prayed for return of the Hinchman staff!
The Library silence turns to noise
As Dorrit arrives with her girls and boys.
The Birthplace door is opened wide,
And Edith’s arranging flowers inside.
Eileen is tromping across the yard,
Bringing another lecture card.
Sure signs of Summer . . . the Librarian’s sneeze.
And the annual swarm of the Library bees.

Dr Sibylle Moehl
It was my greatest sea journey ever and it was a really particular expertise. A excellent journey and all of the more remarkable given the covid state of affairs during the last two years. Hopefully there might be extra journeys like this to come back. Unique tourism opportunity that brought together like minded individuals from everywhere in the world and showcased what South Africa.is capable of organizing. Great combination of journey travel and conservation. A really Once in a Lifetime journey perfectly orchestrated by the organisers, volunteers, sponsors, and the belief held by passengers that besides all challenges this TRIP would go ahead.

Whole trip dedicated to birding, superior experience. Although I didn't go on this trip, my family members did and had nothing however reward for the superb expertise and great service. It is certainly a trip to be wanted..particularly for birders but actually anybody would take pleasure in it, I’m positive.. Bird Life South Africa is very proactive in supporting many conservation actions. Particularly birding trips, palagic birding, encouraging recording of all sea birds. The Wakkerstroom birding space has many excellently trained bird guides.
Then, with the uncertainties and all considered, sure has brought BirdLife South Africa into extra gentle as how they managed to pull this tour off…. So very many tourists with all of the arrangements. But, when the center is into one thing, success shall comply with. I vote from the underside of my heart for BirdLife South Africa with all hope that they win for they certain deserve the highest recognition with what they managed to do. I suppose it is a great approach to raise funds for the conservation of these special and great birds and sea wildlife.

“Birding” is among the most popular recreational activities in America. In fact, statistics show that the total population of birders stands at around 47 million. At this rate, chances are if your next-door neighbor isn’t a birder, you are. And every skill and technique used by “birders” is directly applicable to survival in the wilderness.
Binoculars can help you spot a bird from a respectable distance away, but that is just about it. To get close and personal, the tool to use is a spotting scope. These will allow you to identify the type of bird by its unique markings with the least possible effort. Binoculars were the most important tool for birders however, with the quality of spotting scopes now available, this is really the right solution for any serious birder, or hunter, or survivalist.
When it comes to magnification, binoculars simply cannot compete with spotting scopes. While most binoculars offer a maximum magnification of around 15x, this is where spotting scopes begin. Some have eyepiece lenses that can magnify up to 60x and the whole unit is capable of producing up to 150x magnification.
Image clarity is also another important benefit of using the scopes. Binos will not provide quite as clear an image owing to the fact that they are two telescopes joined together by a middle section. Each however, adjusts independently making it difficult to achieve that clear-cut synchronization.
Using a spotting scope for birding brings you closer than you ever have been to your target. Even birds you already knew start to appear different. At this point, you can watch your progression start to develop as you become more in tune with your target.
Tripod
All that magnification comes at a cost. The spotting scopes are usually larger that the binoculars. For this reason, you will need a good tripod stand to use the scope more efficiently. It should be able to raise the scope high enough for a comfortable viewing experience.
Compared with the regular binoculars which can simply be hung around your neck and raised just a short distance to your eyes, spotting scopes need to be set up correctly and this may take valuable time. However, you can be sure that once it is time to look through the eyepiece, the experience will be worth it. As always, in a SHTF scenario the lower tripod provides less of a signature, BUT, on can use the surrounding foliage, rocks and land features to camouflage a larger set up.
Configurations
There are two main types of spotting scopes. Straight scopes and angled spotting scopes. With the straight type, the viewing position is parallel to the length of the equipment. With angled scopes, the eyepiece is at an angle of 45 degrees to the length of the scope.
Beginner bird watchers tend to prefer the straight spotting scopes. They find these easier to use. On the other hand, angled scopes have a more comfortable viewing position.
Whichever scope you use depends on your personal preference or viewing habits. If you like bird viewing from your car window then the straight variety is the best. However, for those who like to watch birds with the company of friends and family, the angled spotted scopes are preferable. This is due to the fact that individuals of varying heights will be able to view with fairly little adjustments.
Differences Between Spotting Scopes
As we have seen above there are two main types of spotting scopes. But that is not to say that two straight scopes from different manufacturers have the same features. The main differences come in the eyepiece magnification and the objective lens.
Some scopes have a fixed eyepiece that offers a standard magnification. Others have interchangeable eyepieces enabling the bird watcher to up the zoom. For veteran bird watchers, the interchangeable eyepiece seems to be a favourite. This is because it is easy for them to zoom out in order to cover a wide area. Once having spotted the bird, they can zoom in for a closer look.
The diameter of the objective is also a factor to consider. The larger it is the more light that can be gathered providing an even clearer image when the sun begins to set. It is tempting to go for the one with the largest objective lens. However, this means extra weight. Remember that a spotting scope is a piece of equipment that you will need to carry with you often into the field.
Finding the Best Spotting Scope for Birding
When you decide to buy a spotting scope, check out the extra features that are available to you. These features have to make your bird watching experience that more enhanced.
One of the most important things to look for is the ability to withstand harsh climatic condition. The best scopes have a rubber coating that protects the internal parts from getting damaged by water or fog.
The experience is far better if you can take images with you back home. Some spotting scopes can be mounted onto cameras. This depends on the manufacturer and is referred to as digiscoping allowing you to take close up shots of your favourite birds.
Focus capabilities cannot be overlooked. Most modern spotting scopes have more than one feature for focusing on your birdie. Dual focusing is one of them where you can adjust for both coarse and fine viewing. This comes in handy where the target is quite a distance away and you need to zoom in. Adjusting for fine focus develops an even clearer image.
Apochromatic is a term that most spotting scope owners are aware of. It refers to a special lens that eliminates color schemes that are inaccurate also known as color aberrations. The image resolution is enhanced making it easy for you to identify the type of bird you are looking at.
Spotting scopes require a lot of investment both financially and logistics wise. Unlike the binoculars which you can hang around your neck and pull up to your eyes at will, a spotting scope requires extra equipment to be able to function properly. However, the advantages far outweigh any cons. For the birdwatcher with great passion, binoculars simply will not cut it. Spotting scopes bring a distant bird close enabling the viewer to get the best view.

Highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to know more ... This book contains just about everything you would want to know about bird feathers. It has a tutorial in the front that tells you how to identify what part of the body a feather came from, some of the functional differences in feathers, different wing and flight feather shapes and provides a lot of educational material for somebody wanting to teach a class or just learn more about what a feather says about a bird. I have been able to identify a bird from a single feather through the use of this book, although it took a lot of searching. The book is organized by bird category, not by feather size or feather shape so if you are trying to identify what type of bird your feather came from and do not have a clue as to the general type of bird it can take quite a bit of searching. After repeated use I was eventually able to make some educated guesses using feather shape and color to predict which group of birds I thought the feather came from, so identification becomes easier with time. Though the book doesn't include every species, it has a sizable list, with many of the most common species. There are photographs of the flight feathers from each bird and measurements are provided. In some cases smaller contour feathers are also included in the layout. Both the measurements and inclusion of body feathers is very helpful, especially if you find a pile of mystery feathers clustered together. Highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to know more about birds. Go to Amazon
A gift to field biologists and hobbyist What a delight to have this tool. This is the birdwatcher's geocaching. I have spent many years picking up feathers and testing my ability to identify the bird from which it has come. I enjoy it personally but am also a field biologist who uses that data to describe details of a discovery, including bird remains that have been left as a result of predation or impact from transmission wires or wind turbines. I have since purchased 4 more copies for my colleagues and field staff. Other than the unfortunate mislabeled plate on page 30, I have found the book accurate. I believe the authors approach to depict flight feathers was an appropriate choice as they are the most telling of species. The more we learn, the more we respect nature's gifts. Thank you for your tremendous tedious efforts. Go to Amazon
not as useful as I hoped This book has 100s of birds from North America listed, with multiple feathers from each and a bit about feather origins and morphology as well as where the birds are located in the USA. Go to Amazon
Identifying Birds Using Feathers - Unique Perspective! I bought this for my ornithologist friend and he is delighted. It's a unique way to identify birds and includes interesting information if you enjoy birds. He thought there were a few feathers that had been matched to the wrong birds but we decided that later editions would include edits for errors. Mostly the errors do not detract from the book which is well organized and informative. Go to Amazon
Feathers in their Caps I bought this book after seeing the cover and recognizing a feather that has been in my collection for years. Go to Amazon
"A" for Effort; "B" For Usefullness - 4.5 Stars I'm sitting at my desk which has an old ink well filled with 7 feathers I've collected in the past few months from hikes in the western foothills. Three of these feathers are tan and barred. After receiving "Bird Feathers" by Scott and McFarland, I now know that two are primaries and one is a secondary - and I know the purposes as well. I'm also fairly sure that one is from a Sharp-shinned Hawk, but I'm not positive. I'm not even certain as to the feathers on the front cover of the book, the most detailed photos presented. And I either have a feather from an Anna's Hummingbird or a Western Bluebird. Hence, my predicament in being a real amateur and having such a book. Go to Amazon
Serious birder's must have. Great book It is easy to ready and understand Easy to use and I like their layout Five Stars Four Stars Five Stars Four Stars Searched for a resource like this and I think this book is a great ... Exactly what I've been waiting for!

Hikers are welcome to bring their leashed dogs, and there are picnic tables, restrooms, and water along the Mill Mountain Spur Trail en route to the Discovery Center, a naturalist center with exhibits on the park, local wildlife, and trail maps.
The park features 1,100 acres of breathtaking scenery, numerous walking and hiking trails, as well as thrilling zip lines and a treetop adventure course that is appropriate for families with younger children.
