Insight into UK Electric Vehicle Market during 2021-2027
A recent study conducted by the strategic consulting and market research firm, BlueWeave Consulting, revealed that the UK electric vehicle market was worth USD 2.81 billion in 2020. According to the study, the market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 12.7%, earning revenue of around USD 6.26 billion by the end of 2027. The growth of the UK electric vehicle market is attributable to increasing consciousness towards non-renewable resources and carbon emissions. The transportation sector is the primary source of air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, ozone, lead, and various nitrogen oxides. In light of this, the UK government intends to ban fuel vehicles within the next decade.
Moreover, the government is also providing financial aid to encourage people to adopt electric vehicles. It is anticipated that this factor will propel the market demand for electric vehicles in the United Kingdom besides boosting the market growth. However, the lack of sufficient charging infrastructure in the United Kingdom and self-sufficiency in oil, which keeps the fuel price comparatively stable, is expected to hinder the growth of the UK electric vehicle market.
Improving Electric Vehicle Battery Life Is Expected to Boost the UK Electric Vehicle Market
Battery power is improving and becoming less expensive as a result of the consistent efforts of EV battery manufacturers and technological advancements. Lower costs of batteries also influence the price of electric vehicles and make them more affordable to the general public. For instance, researchers at the University of Texas have developed a lithium-ion battery that does not contain cobalt in its cathode. Instead, it shifted to a nickel-based alloy with a high nickel content (89%) and manganese and aluminum as the other ingredients. Using this development, researchers hope to develop batteries that last longer and distribute ions evenly, while reducing cost. These factors are powering the growth of the UK electric vehicle market.
Increasing Development of Charging Infrastructure Is Favoring the United Kingdom Electric Vehicle Market Growth
Due to the increased number of electric vehicle drivers on British roads, it is significant that charging points at various locations should be more readily available so that journeys do not become impeded. There are currently more than 42,000 charging points spread across 15,500 locations. In addition to government investments, private entities are also investing in developing charging stations in the UK. For example, Royal Dutch Shell, an oil and gas multinational, has offered to develop up to 15,000 charging points across the UK. These factors are likely to boost the United Kingdom electric vehicle market in the forecast period.

United Kingdom (UK) Electric Vehicle Market - By Segment
Market segments for electric vehicles in the United Kingdom include passenger cars, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, fleet utility vehicles, electric trucks, electric buses, and other commercial vehicles. The passenger car segment accounts for the largest market share with the growing support of the UK government. The government adopts stringent regulations related to vehicle carbon emission. Additionally, it offers subsidies for the adoption of electric vehicles, increasing demand for passenger vehicles in the United Kingdom. On the other hand, the commercial vehicle segment is also growing at a high rate, with the increasing penetration of public buses, trucks, and vans of electric vehicles.
United Kingdom (UK) Electric Vehicle Market - Regional Insights
Geographically, the United Kingdom (UK) electric vehicle market is segmented into England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. England accounts for the largest market share as the number of registered electric vehicles in England is growing at a high rate due to the proliferation of charging points. Furthermore, as a result of this region's great potential, EV manufacturing brands are also launching their products. On the other hand, Scotland is also emerging as a potential market for electric vehicles, with over 26,000 licensed vehicles categorized as Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV). Intending to achieve a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, the Scotland government is putting tremendous efforts into promoting the adoption of electric vehicles among the general public as well as commercial use.
Impact of COVID-19 on the United Kingdom Electric Vehicle Market
The COVID-19-induced pandemic has had a negative impact on the United Kingdom electric vehicle market. The UK government imposed strict lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures to prevent the deadly coronavirus from spreading. The nationwide lockdown ended up hampering the production and distribution of electric vehicles. Furthermore, the lockdown also impacted the purchasing power of customers, which also resulted in the slower demand for electric vehicles in the UK market. The post-COVID-19 period, however, will likely see a rebound in the market due to increased environmental and sustainability awareness.
Competitive Landscape
The leading market players in the United Kingdom electric vehicle market are BMW UK Ltd., Colt Car Company, Nissan Motor Manufacturing, Volkswagen Group UK Ltd, Renault UK Ltd, FORD UK, Mercedes-Benz Cars UK Ltd, Audi UK Ltd., Tesla Inc., Hyundai Motor UK Ltd., and other prominent players.
The United Kingdom electric vehicle market is highly fragmented, with several industry players with established brands. The companies significantly invest in R&D activities to improve the vehicle and battery performance for long-distance rides. They also offer a wide range of products as well as services to cater to various customer needs. Furthermore, competitive strategies like mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, collaborations, etc., are prevalent in the market to help market players gain a competitive edge.

Part 2: Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited
Text and Photos by Michael Hozjan
Once the domain of a few, today nearly every manufacturer has a hybrid version of at least one SUV in their model line. Toyota itself has two, the popular RAV4 and Highlander. I opted for the Highlander because it’s the only non-luxury mid-size hybrid SUV available with three-row seating.
Two trim models are offered the XLE and the upscale Limited (although the mechanical spec sheet on Toyota Canada’s web page does show even the LE available as a hybrid). The XLE provides seating for eight with a middle row bench seat, the Limited’s second row buckets cut that number by one.
While you can get into a front-wheel-drive V-6 powered Highlander for as little as $36,450 and the all-wheel-drive model for $38,945. The hybrid entry price starts at $53,264 for the XLE ($5 less than the gas only Limited) and the Limited at $59,269. A fuel-efficient DOHC Atkinson-Cycle 3.5L V-6 powers the hybrid’s front wheels. Two electric motors make up the hybrid drive, one to power up the front wheels, and like the RAV4, a second smaller one to drive the rear wheels when added traction is called upon. Tally up the ponies with the three power plants and it gives you 306 with 263 lb.ft. of torque. By having only the second 68 hp electric motor drive the rear wheels, the use if a driveshaft from the gasoline engine is negated, shedding some weight for the Nickel- Metal Hydride battery. A continuously variable automatic (CVT) allows the 2230 kg (nearly 5,000 lbs,) to scamper from 0 to 100 in just a shade over 7 seconds.
The Highlander ranks as an Ultra-Low-Emissions Vehicle II (ULEV II) and gets a 5 out of 5 overall safety rating from NHTSA.
Rear cross traffic alert, radar adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with autonomous braking and pedestrian detection, lane keeping assistance and the Bird’s Eye View Dynamic Backup Camera are all standard on the Limited.
With my home in the country, I might not be the perfect candidate to test hybrids. They are after all designed to be at their optimum in urban stop and go traffic, where their electric drive does its thing. About the only time I get to use the “silent running” is driving up my driveway. Oh I try to cruise in full electric mode on the highway but that’s more of a play with the right foot than anything else. Transport Canada gives it an 8.1L/100 km in the city and 8.5L/100km on the highway. My personal best this past winter averaged out to 9.1L/100km, still better than its gas only counterpart, which Transport Canada gives a combined consumption of 10.6L/100km.
Trying to keep the vehicle in EV mode without the gas engine kicking is an exercise in futility. You get the same results without pressing the EV button.
My Toasted Walnut Pearl, yes that’s the colour, came with 19” alloys (the XLE rides on 18 inchers) with a suppler ride than what I had been expecting. There’s an inherent advantage to making larger vehicles hybrids in that the added weight of the hybrid system (nearly 300 lbs. in the Highlander) isn’t that apparent. Take the same system and stick it on a sedan and the ride quality is easily noticeable. The Highlander remained composed in quick lane changes, went where it was supposed to go in winding back roads with no surprises, the electric power steering making it all so smooth.
Inside driver and passengers are treated to a 12 speaker JBL Synthesis audio system that works in conjunction with /your Bluetooth and allows you to scroll through your tunes. Leather seating is standard and the seats have just enough bolstering to keep you in place while still providing easy ingress and egress. There’s a three zone independent climate control with both front buckets featuring ventilation as well as heat.
Second row seats slide fore and aft and recline and offer a generous amount space, the third row, not so. Although the third row is considered a three-passenger area…I’ll just say maybe for the kiddies. You could stick six six-footers in the Highlander in a pinch as rear headroom is ok if you don’t have too many potholes along your route and if they don’t mind the headrest protruding into their shoulder blades. Oh and there is an intercom of sorts (Driver Easy Speak, accessed from the 8” infotainment screen) so you can talk to the rear seat passengers. Frankly I don’t see the expenditure on Toyota’s part other than a marketing point as the Highlander runs quietly enough for the third row to hear you without needing to raise your voice…oh ya the kiddies. That’ll spook them!
Controls are easily read and manipulated and the center console has a deep cubbyhole that you could store all kinds of things in.
My favorite part of the Highlander is a feature that’s shared with the Toyota 4Runner TRD I tested a few months back and that is the separate opening rear glass on the hatch. A feature quickly disappearing from other manufacturers, luckily Toyota seems to know what we want!
Unlike some hybrids where cargo capacity is diminished by the battery pack, the Highlander’s remains at a respectable 83.2 cu.ft. with both rows of seats folded. I suspect most owners will drop only the third row seat, which still leaves 42.3 cu.ft. of space for your groceries or camping gear. Speaking of camping, towing capacity for the hybrid is 3500 lb. while the regular Highlander is rated for 5000 lbs.
There you have it, some advantages and some disadvantages, just like the diesel. In the end it’s all about crunching numbers and your own personal driving habits. How many kilometers do have to drive to offset the higher cost of the hybrid, or for that matter the differential between diesel fuel and gasoline?
Price as tested: $58,552*
* Includes Federal excise tax (A/C), freight and PDI

2017 Nissan GT-R NISMO
New Post has been published on http://auto.tintoantap.com/2017-nissan-gt-r-nismo/
2017 Nissan GT-R NISMO
A tradition of craftsmanship makes the 2017 Nissan GT-R NISMO a supercar that will take your breath away – even when sitting still.
Turn an air vent that was studied, designed, and developed by a quality expert to operate flawlessly for years. Rotate a switch that’s been subtly etched on the outside to enhance its feel. Or let your eyes travel across a dashboard that comes from a single Nappa leather hide, hand-selected for tone, and free of even the smallest imperfection. This is attention to detail bordering on obsession.
Available semi-aniline leather appointments on the center console, door panels, and shift lever surround you in comfort, while available semi-aniline leather and double-stitching on the seats are a tactile and visual feast.
Enhancing the way you get information lets you focus on what matters most – the pure enjoyment of the drive.
The Display Commander lets you dial in your world, allowing you to control key functions through GT-R’s multi-touch screen . By rotating the dial, or pushing it to the left or right, you can scroll through all menus, and move selections around the screen.
The combination meter uses meshing gears as its motif. The tachometer is placed in the center, with the large-scale gear indicator on the upper right, supporting the driver with immediate readability when driving on the circuit.
Carefully crafting each part, thinking of the mind, body, and spirit of the customers who will use their products – that is the spirit of the Takumi, a part Japanese tradition. And that is the human soul in the Nissan GT-R, a supercar that could never be created in a factory that only pursues rationality.
Each Nissan GT-R engine is hand-assembled by a single technician – and proudly bears a plaque carrying their signature – in a dust- and temperature-controlled clean room much like those used for Formula One racing engines.
Each of the drivers is assigned to a unique aspect of Nissan GT-R’s development. There’s an Autobahn expert, a “Marketability” expert who tests Nissan GT-R’s real-world poise over bumps, potholes and the like, and the “Ringmeisters” who put the supercar through its paces on the unforgiving Nürburgring.
The cylinder block features a closed deck for strength. For increased strength, a ladder frame structure was also adopted to give the crankshaft added support, important with the engine’s massive torque. Magnesium alloy was selected for the oil pan and rocker cover for its light weight and strength.
For higher horsepower and better response than a naturally aspirated engine, each side of the VR38 features it’s own turbocharger, intercooler, and catalyst. By employing an independent intake and exhaust system for each side of the V6, intake air flow is increased and exhaust back-pressure is decreased.
Innovative plasma-sprayed bores are used in each cylinder instead of traditional cast-iron liners. This enhances cooling, reduces friction and weight while maximizing horsepower and increasing fuel-efficiency. Compared to the cast-iron liner, the overall weight decreased by approximately 6.6 lbs.
For optimal control of engine cooling, the VR38 features a thermostatically controlled oil cooler system. A scavenger pump is employed to help keep oil flowing to the turbochargers, even during the strong lateral Gs experienced on a racecourse.
GT-R now offers a standard titanium exhaust. Because titanium is notoriously difficult to work with, each exhaust is hand-built by a master craftsman, and is specifically designed for an individual vehicle – music to any enthusiast’s ears.
When most supercars stay in the garage or make a hasty retreat from the less-than-ideal conditions, the Nissan GT-R powers through, with one of the most advanced All-Wheel Drive and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) systems ever used in a road car.
Instead of the traditional 50/50 torque split between front and rear axles, the electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive system provides nearly 100% of available torque to the rear wheels, and can send up to 50% of torque to the front wheels. This provides the steering feel and response of a Rear-Wheel Drive vehicle, while giving the added confidence that only AWD can offer. Additionally, VDC continuously monitors your steering and braking actions, senses any oversteer or understeer, and compensates by reducing engine speed and/or applying brake pressure to specific wheels.
