Tangent from this: now I'm wondering what sports would look like on these people's planet. Their biology means they've had a low-key female privilege society since basically time immemorial, so seems like they might have more prestige sports that emphasize things women are better at, which would be...?
@who-canceled-roger-rabbit, this seems relevant to your interests.
I should probably read up on this but this is just a Tumblr post so I'll just throw ideas at the wall.
I've heard endurance brought up as an axis on which women tend to have a physical advantage, so maybe ultra-marathons?
Or... I dimly remember reading something about the Tasmanians where it mentioned that in their society women dove for shellfish but men didn't, and speculated that women were better at this because they had more body fat which insulated them better in cold water. So maybe long-distance swimming, especially in cold water?
Gymnastics seems like another possibility, specifically kinds that are easier if you're lighter. Also, navigating mazes with tight spaces.
Maybe some of their equivalents of football, soccer, etc. would look more... capture-the-flag war-game-y? Involving coordinated movement and maneuvers over large stretches of terrain and needing to retrieve things hidden in tight spaces.
That said, I suspect some of their prestige sports would have a male bias, specifically...
You know that point about how prestige team sports are kind of sublimated tribal warfare? One idea I have is that's very clearly and obviously true with these people; it's an effect of their increased cooperativeness; one of the manifestations of that is being better at agreeing to less-lethal substitutes for actual fighting! Specifically, they have a very old tradition of peace-keeping by using team sports as a less lethal substitute for tribal warfare, at least originally very much consciously understood as such. Basically, if two communities had a dispute, instead of their fighting age males getting together in some field and rumbling, their fighting age males would get together in some field and play some rough but mostly non-lethal game (think something along the lines of rugby), victory in which would serve as a rough proxy for which side would win in an actual fight, with the resolution of the dispute being wagered on the outcome of the game. I think a lot of their prestige sports (i.e. their equivalents of things like football and soccer) evolved from this tradition and still have this kind of social role in certain contexts, albeit nowadays the "we're less-lethally measuring who'd win in actual brawl" aspect is pretty abstracted; two rural communities might wager water rights on the equivalent of a high school football game, but nowadays the more problematic on the table option the game is being an alternative to is a court case, not a blood feud. I think sports evolved from that tradition would have a male bias, because the games were originally proxy measurements for what would happen in an actual battle, so "can our fighting age males beat your fighting age males?" was most of what they were originally measuring, and they're often still kind of romanticized as an opportunity for the community's young men to prove their devotion to their community, with a gendered angle of "and especially their community's women."
So, this is one of the many areas where their gender relationships wouldn't be a neat inversion of ours; I think a lot of their prestige sports would have a male bias, but in their case the sexist assumptions at work would be 1) this physical effort and danger is a special burden for the young men of the community and it would be unchivalrous to expect a woman to shoulder it, 2) women don't need to prove themselves by showing that they're really good at getting a ball into a net, a woman proves herself by doing something that actually matters like becoming a doctor or a political leader or something like that. Regarding 2), I think a common mindset might be that athleticism is a perfectly healthy interest for a young girl and a perfectly healthy hobby for an older woman, but a girl who wants to go into sports as a career might get a lot of "are you sure that'd be living up to your potential?" from her family.
I also think male-biased sports of this type would often have something a bit like a gender-flipped version of the dynamic that IIRC often happens with things like modelling and sex work in our society; the actual athletes are male, but a lot of the coaches and promoters and money managers and the like are women, and a lot of team management decisions are made with an eye toward a promoter's idea of what the women in the audience want to see.
Also, I think male-biased sports of this type would often be kind of sex work adjacent. I mentioned that they often get romanticized as an opportunity for the community's young men to prove their devotion to their community, with a gendered angle of "and especially their community's women," and that has a sexualized angle of "and the community's women may be grateful, if you know what I mean." This tends to result in situations like a bunch of middle-aged women showing up to "show their gratitude" to hot fit twenty-something men, with it being understood that said middle-aged women waking up happy tomorrow will be socially and economically beneficial for the team.
Also, tentatively, these people have less sexual dimorphism than Homo sapiens, so their sports might be less gender-segregated than ours partially because of that. In the case of male-biased sports, prestige teams might often be mostly young men but have a few big and strong young women on them, and those women might sometimes benefit from "glass escalator" effect.

Optimus Prime and Megatron continue their battle, even as both ships are approaching towards Earth
Windblade: We have approached our destination of arrival!
Hound: It’s Earth
Bumblebee: But Prime is still up there, I got to help him! *runs up to help Optimus*
Sideswipe: No Bumblebee! Come back!
Megatron pins Optimus down as he place his Sword Axe near his neck
Megatron: We were brothers once!
Optimus Prime: Once!
Megatron: Any final words?
Optimus Prime; Yes! Say hello to my friend-
Bumblebee: *blasts Megatron back into his ship* And his name, is Bumblebee!
Optimus Prime: Bee! You saved my life *hugs him*
Bumblebee: Your welcome Prime, but we have arrival at our destination
Optimus Prime: Earth.. We made it
Optimus Prime and Bumblebee head back inside of the Autobot Ship
Optimus Prime: All Autobots, proceed to the Stasis Pods!
The Autobots proceed to head to the Stasis Pods
Ratchet: Now why use the Stasis Pods Optimus?
Optimus Prime: We might be inactive until we are needed!
Soon, the Autobots (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Windblade, Hound, Sideswipe, Jazz, Ratchet, Arcee, Grimlock, Strafe, and Slash) all got into the Stasis Pods as their ship began to make a crash landing into a forest
As for the Decepticons, their ship crashed onto the Moon, as they headed to their Stasis Pods, but with the injured Megatron heading to his
Megatron: We shall meet again Prime, as this war has gotten started *enters his Stasis Pod*
Scene pans to both the Decepticon Ship that crashed on the Moon, and the Autobot Ship that crashed in a Forest on Earth
The battle for Earth, has begun
To be continued

Ok I’ve been thinking abt the human pokemon AU too much and I need to ramble NOWW Anyways
Ok so I’ve vague posted abt them a lot but Rayquaza and Deoxys’ relationship just 😭 it makes me chuckle a bit.
They start off trying to kill each other. Deoxys, who has remained dormant for a few hundred years in the outskirts of Hoenn, is mistaken for an ultra beast because they keep accidentally causing property damage and Arceus sends Ray to deal with the matter. All fun and good. Who is Ray to disobey their boss especially when harm is being done. Of course the task is a challenge because Deoxys is smart and holds themself in a fight easily and ultimately gets away.
So for a while it’s a game of cat and mouse. Ray looks out for sightings of them or their human disguise, or just stumbles upon them, they brawl and eventually one of them retreats. But over time they both just get... tired. For one Deoxys is tired of being hunted for sport! Ray on the other hand is tired of not making progress, is recognizing that Deoxys isn’t an ultra beast at all and comes to an understanding that all the damage was by accident, and doesn’t want to fulfill the mission bc Arceus sucks ass!!
Doesn’t help that while still fighting they both manage to be intrigued by each other??? Deoxys is a literal alien with shape shifting abilities so ofc Ray is amazed by their power, but also Ray is a straight up god and so Deoxys is amazed at how... human they seem despite being far from it.
This culminates in them being more and more vocal about this intrigue as battles go on. Deoxys accidentally teleports the both of them in the heat of the moment and they both take a pause bc Ray’s like “You can teleport???? Wow!” or Deoxys stabs Ray with their own katana and watches them regenerate like “?!?!?!?!?!”
Eventually they just take long breaks just... talking. Like they still harm each other- most of these talks are prompted by Ray waiting for their bones to heal- and they get along nicely! They find common interests. They find out they’re both family oriented and just want their families to be safe. They’re both from space. They were both outcasts.
They stop fighting all together. Hell, they start “fights” just to keep appearances and end up using it as an opportunity to get some alone time. Of course this comes at the price of Arceus growing impatient with reports of Deoxys- who isn’t causing property damage anymore but is still seen as a threat- still being made.
Rayquaza is dropped from the mission. They were incompetent. They’re replaced with another close member of Arceus’ court, one who wouldn’t care to get to know the target, one who wouldn’t even let them have the chance to escape.
But in the heat of that battle Ray comes to Deoxys’ aid and gets them to safety, and they kiss :)))
And theoretically all is right in the world but it really isn’t LMAKS

The Return
The Return
Cody and Frankie froze when they heard the klaxon, the Citywide comm crackled to life, as Prowl spoke; “Autobots, Mobilise! Get all the Humans to the safe zones, The Decepticons are attacking!”
Rewind climbed up the fire pole, “Blaster sent me up to get you two, the rescue team is already heading to the safe zones.”
Frankie jumped to her feet and head towards Rewind.
“I’ll come in a minute,” Said Cody, inputting commands into his console, “I need to seal up the tunnels.”
Frankie paused and looked at Cody, who looked up, “I’ll be right behind you, I promise.”
Rewind guided Frankie to the pole and sent her down, “I’ll be watching for you.”
Cody nodded and continued closing the tunnels. Rewind headed down to Frankie and Blaster, the Autobot already having deployed Steeljaw, Ramhorn, Eject and Blockrock. The five mini-cons prepared to leave with Frankie, as the building started to seal up.
“We have five minutes to leave before we’re stuck in here,” Said Blaster, picking Frankie up and walking out the door, “Cody’s still got the exit tunnels to seal up before he can leave.”
“Will he be, okay?” Asked Frankie, looking behind Blaster as he moved away from the Firehouse.
“I’m sure he’ll be fine, Prowl’s nearby.” Dismissed Blaster, as the mini-cons scattered out to guide the humans to the safe zones.
TR
Drift looked up from Russell and Hank’s game when he heard a siren sound.
“That sounds like…” Sideswipe trailed as Bumblebee jumped into action.
“Autobots, Rev up and Roll Out!” Without waiting for the other, Bumblebee transformed and drove off, Grimlock and Strongarm following him, Drift summoned his mini-cons, transformed and followed them, leaving Sideswipe to bring up the rear. Fixit quickly guided the humans towards the remains of the Alchemor, activating the defence systems.
TR
Kade froze at the siren, before turning to all the humans around him, “Alright, everyone heard the warning, get to the safe zones!”
Soon enough, a sea of humans was being guided to the safe zones, while the Autobots took up positions around the City, waiting for the Decepticons to show themselves. Prowl watched as Brawn helped a group of humans to the ground.
The ground a few feet away from them exploded, with Skywarp landed not far from the group. The Decepticon sneered at the human, before levelling his cannon at them. Brawn saw him, before charging at the Decepticon, a single shot entering his shoulder. Brawn grunted, as more Decepticons landed and started shooting at the Autobots and the fleeing humans, the Autobot snarled and punched Skywarp in the face.
Jazz grabbed the barrel of a tank and yanked it upwards, Brawl transformed and threw the Autobot to the ground. A shot hit Brawl’s side, as Bumblebee transformed and skidded under the Decepticon. Prowl’s head rocked to the side, as Barricade punched him, Blaster fired his sonic cannon and sent Barricade into a fountain.
The Autobots held their defence, as the Decepticons started surrounding the city. Quickshadow jumped onto Blitzwing’s back and kicked him in the back of the head. Starscream watched as his loyalists attacked, Megatronus stood behind him and smirked.
“Soon, we will have our revenge.” Said The Fallen, as he dispatched Fracture to the makeshift prison the Autobot’s constructed, “My brothers couldn’t stop this.”
Back in the battle, Prowl, yelled as his door wings were shot off. Bumblebee rolled out of the way of Blitzwing’s rocket, before hooking his hands around the Triple Changers arm and launching himself into the air, grabbing a rocket as he did so. Bumblebee landed on Blitzwing’s shoulder and ripped panels and wires out of the Decepticon. As Blitzwing screamed, Bumblebee jammed the rocket into the hole he made and jumped away, shooting the rocket.
Blitzwing’s death silence the battlefield, the headless Decepticon toppled to the ground. Everyone was silence, before Brawn hefted Skywarp up and slammed him into the ground, allowing Grimlock to knock a vehicon into Astrotrain. Skyward managed to free himself of Brawn, before shooting into the air and firing a series of shots into Brawn’s back. The Autobot collapsed to his knees, before his spark flickered out and fell dead where he once stood.
A space bridge opened, granting Arcee, Bulkhead, Ultra Magnus, Smokescreen and Wheeljack access to the battle.
“What’s happening?” Asked Arcee, shooting at the Decepticons.
“Decepticon’s attacked, Blitzwing’s dead and Skywarp killed Brawn.” Reported Prowl, as Bulkhead charged Skywarp.
TR
Cody skidded to a halt as he reached the safe zone, “Kade, have you seen Frankie?”
Kade shook his head, before he could ask why, Cody ran off and started asking around for Frankie. Every person he asked, he received a negative answer. Cody worried his bottom lip, before steeling his nerves and running back out the entrance.
“CODY!” Yelled Kade, going to follow but being stopped by Hayley.
“Kade, it’s too dangerous.” Said his fiancé, desperately trying to get him to stay.
“Cody’s out there.” Protested Kade, as Dani contacted Blades.
“Blades, Cody’s just ran out the door, I think he’s looking for Frankie.” Said Dani, getting a grunt from Blades.
“I’ll send him your way if I see him, right now I have Vortex on my aft.” Said Blades.
“Stay safe, partner.” Said Dani, before shutting her comm off.
Cody ducked under an upturned car, avoiding a Decepticon chasing a stray family. The mother tripped and tried to scramble away. Cody spotted some of Wheeljack’s inventions in the middle of the road, the Wrecker must’ve come back when the Decepticons attacked. Cody grabbed the boomsticks, ran out and jammed one of the explosives into the Decepticons foot. When the Decepticon fell, Cody pulled the hunting knife Dani got him and stabbed the Decepticon’s eyes. Once he was certain the Decepticon was blinded, Cody shoved the second one of the boomsticks into the crater where the Decepticon’s eye was. Cody quickly helped the mother to her feet and pulled her and her family away from the Decepticon as it’s head exploded.
“They’re a safe zone a block away, head there.” Said Cody, already heading in the opposite direction.
“What about you?” Asked the mother, as her husband started to lead the children to the safe zone.
“I’m looking for someone,” Called Cody, as the ground shook and dust fell, “don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”
The woman watched Cody get further away, before following after her family.
TR
Miko and Raf helped triage the injured, as Jack helped the medical staff. Jack just finished dressing a wound, when Frankie came up behind him, “We need some more gauze.”
“There should be some in supply closet 12.” Said Jack, helping his patient up, “It’s down the hall and numbered.”
Frankie nodded and raced off, Doc Greene and Professor Baranova were helping with moving the patient to a seating area. Jack winced as a loud explosion shook the ground. Frankie was coming back from the supply closet with the gauze, when her phone went off.
“Kade?” Answered Frankie, handing Dr McSwaine the gauze, “What’s wrong?”
Frankie stiffened, “He what? I…I’ll called Quickshadow, she’ll find him.”
“Frankie, what wrong?” Asked Miko, looking at the younger girl.
“Cody’s out in the battle zone,” Choked Frankie, trying to keep calm, “Kade said he’s looking for me.”
Miko froze, before glancing over at Jack, “Cody’s going to be fine, he’s a fighter, Frankie. I’m sure Cody will be bringing people through the doors soon.”
TR
Cody’s left hand ached as he kept it close to his side, his right hand held a blaster he’d taken off a Decepticon Mini-Con. He aimed his blaster at the nearest Decepticon’s ankle and fired. The ‘Con collapsed to the ground, allowing Cody to shove a boomstick into it’s eye. Cody had killed seven Decepticon this way and he’d just used the last boomstick he’d come across. Cody quickly sent the other humans toward the safe zones and looked up. Cody spotted Prowl fighting Barricade, before he pointed the blaster up at the Decepticon’s head and pulled the trigger.
Barricade’s head rocked to the side; his left optic completely destroyed. Prowl took his change and fired several shots into Barricade’s spark. Barricade fell to the ground, dead. Prowl looked at the origin of the shot and did a double take at Cody.
“Cody, what are you doing here?” Demanded Prowl, crouching in front of Cody.
“I can’t find Frankie, she’s not in the safe zone.” Said Cody, shooting at Brawl’s ankle.
Prowl frowned and looked at Cody, before he looked up again. Prowl saw Thundercracker aiming at Cody, a sick grin on his face. Thundercracker fired and Prowl jumped in front of the shot. Cody looked up as his guardian jerked and stepped backwards over him. Prowl had a hole in his midsection, before another shot made a second hole in his shoulder and another into his chest. Cody saw Prowl’s optics flicker orange, before smoke started to pour out of the Autobot’s mouth. There was a splintering sound as Prowl’s optics shattered. The autobot took a few steps forwards, before Thundercracker sent a final shot into his spark. Prowl fell backwards, Cody scrambled out of the way, but got his leg crushed by Prowl’s head, a shard of metal piercing Cody’s leg and crushed the limb. Prowl’s body suddenly jerked as his chest exploded. Cody stared at Prowl’s remains, unable to look away from them.
Thundercracker took a step forwards, but was knocked back from a tank shell.
“Autobots! Attack!” Yelled Warpath, as Quickshadow, lifted Prowl’s head and pulled Cody out from under the spike.
“What?” Asked Cody, looking up at Quickshadow, tears streaming down his cheeks, “Where are we going? We can’t leave him! Please, Prowl needs help.”
“Prowl’s dead, Cody!” Said Quickshadow, forcefully, “And if we don’t get you out of here, you’ll be too.”
Quickshadow started running towards the Medical safe zone, Cody resting in her hands. The boy watched as Beachcomber was shot in the neck and fell dead over his lifeless guardian. Ironhide shot at Thundercrack, but the Decepticon flew away. Quickshadow passed the smouldering remains of Windcharger, while Hound provided covering fire.
Quickshadow came to a halt and knocked on the door, Raf poked his head out and saw Cody, “Jesus! Thanks, Quickshadow.”
Quickshadow nodded, before standing up. The femme turned around and was immediately hit in the face with a rocket. Quickshadow’s remains fell, with her head rolling off as soon as she hit the ground.
Cody and Raf stared at the dead Autobot.
“We need to get you inside.” Said Raf, helping Cody through the doors, “Guys, we have one who’s legs been crushed!”
Miko looked up and saw Cody, looking much paler than when she’d last seen him. June spotted them and walked over, she frowned and looked at the leg, “That’s got energon poisoning, we need to amputate.”
“There’s a room down the hall where we can remove it.” Said a nurse, taking Cody from Raf.
June nodded, before heading over to a box that held surgical tools. June immediately found the surgeon and informed her of the situation.
No one noticed Frankie’s frozen form as she watched Cody come in and be taken to have his leg taken off.
TR
Skywarp’s dead body hit the ground, Huffer fired a shot at Starscream, as received a shot to the face. Bumblebee and Arcee didn’t glance at Huffer’s corpse, while Strongarm stared at it. Hound came crashing down, with Starscream knocking the top of his helm off and shooting him in the back of the head.
Arcee transformed and sped towards Starscream, before transforming again and jamming her fist into his head. She activated her blaster and fired round after round into Starscream’s head, all that was left was a smoking hole where his helm used to be. Starscream’s body fell, just as the Fallen dropped down from the sky. The Prime landed on his back and started to scramble to his feet, when the most unexpected Bot stood on his chest. Optimus Prime glared down at his brother, before activating his weapons and fired a single shot into Megatronus’s chest.
Optimus watched at the life left his brothers eyes. Silence reigned the battlefield, The Autobots looked around, seeing that all the Decepticons, who weren’t dead, had fled.
“It can’t be.” Uttered Ultra Magnus, stepping forwards, “Optimus.”
“Hello, old friend.” Said Optimus, as he spotted the remains of Hound and Huffer, “How many did we lose?”
“Seven in total, sir,” Said Ultra Magnus, looking up at Optimus, “but they died defending the humans.”
“Some were wounded as they were evacuated.” Reported Ultra Magnus, as Arcee walked towards Optimus.
“We lost Prowl, Brawn, Beachcomber, Quickshadow, Windcharger, Hound and Huffer,” Listed Arcee, “Blaster and Ironhide received minor wounds, while Jazz, Sideswipe and the Rescue Bots are going to require some new limbs.”
“And what of the humans that were wounded?” Asked Optimus, making Arcee tense.
“Some were wounded heading to the safe zones…” Arcee sighed, “Optimus, some of the humans were saved by Cody Burns.”
“While that is pleasing to hear, I fail to see how that correlates to the wounded.” Stated Optimus, raising an eyebrow.
“Cody was wounded when Prowl died.” Said Arcee, glancing up at Optimus, “He also took out a few Decepticons.”
Optimus frowned, before stepping forwards, “Take me to him.”
TR
Frankie sat beside Cody, her eyes resting on the point just above his left knee where his lower leg was missing. The energon that had infected his wound had literally started cooking the leg while Cody was still alive. Her parents were out looking around the city for any more wounded, Jack was locating the dead and Raf was off with Ratchet working on the Autobots that’d survived. Miko sat in the corner, watching Cody and Frankie.
“He’s going to be okay, you know?” Asked Miko, carefully watching Frankie.
“You don’t know that.” Responded Frankie, not looking at the woman.
“I do know,” Assured Miko, getting up and walking towards her, “I may not have been maimed helping the Autobots, but he’s going to be okay.”
“How?!” Demanded Frankie, whipping around to glare at her, “How can you know if he’ll be okay if you’ve never gone through what he has?!”
“Because he’s got us, and Jack and Raf, and the Bots.” Said Miko, simply, “We’ll be there for him, it may take some time, weeks, months or even years, but we’ll be there to help him and, one day, he’ll be okay.”
“An excellent observation, Miko.” Said a deep baritone that made the woman freeze.
Miko turned and came face-to-chest with a man, that was undoubtedly a holoform.
“Optimus?” Asked Miko, dumbstruck.
The holoform, Optimus, nodded, “Arcee informed me of Cody’s situation, especially after the loss of Prowl.”
Frankie wiped her eyes and got up to leave, “I’ll go help with the search.”
“I do not think Cody would want his spark mate to leave.” Said Optimus, evenly.
“Spark mate?” Questioned Frankie, looking at Miko.
“Cybertron’s equivalent for significant other.” Explained Miko, folding her arms, “And Optimus is right, Cody wouldn’t want you to leave and worry. I’m sure he’d want you to be here when he wakes up.”
Frankie wiped her eyes, before nodding and sitting back down, “What if he doesn’t want to see me?”
“Francine,” Said Optimus, getting her attention, “Cody cares enough for you to head out into a war zone to ensure you were safe.”
“But Prowl…” Frankie trailed off.
“Prowl would’ve died either way,” Said Optimus, placing his hands behind his back, “you cannot hold yourself accountable for actions out of your control.”
Frankie was silent, only moving to hold Cody’s hand.
TR
Word spread of Optimus’s return and the defeat of the Decepticons. Cody woke up a week after the battle, after the socket for his leg had been attached. A couple days after, Cody was walking with a cane out of the hospital. Cody paused at the sight of the rescue team.
Boulder now sported massive wheels and Chase’s headlights were now on his chest. Heatwave’s ladder was split into two parts and Blades sported a face plate over his mouth and four rotor blades opposed to two.
“Cody!” Gasped Blades, crouching down in front of the boy, “We were so worried.”
“I’ll be okay, guy.” Said Cody, trying not to look at Prowl’s former space.
“I mean, it’s not everyday you survive Thundercracker.” Continued Blades, rambling, “There are rumours that he’s somewhere nearby, waiting to get revenge.”
“Blades, intelligence reported that they picked up his signal several miles out.” Said Heatwave, looking at the helicopter.
“It’s good to have you back, Cody.” Said Boulder, as Frankie embraced the boy, “We all missed you.”
“Some more than others, huh?” Joked Cody, as Frankie buried her face in his neck.
“We also heard about your actions in the battle, Mr Decepticon Killer.” Jested Heatwave, making Cody laugh.
“I only did what someone else would’ve.” Dismissed Cody, resting his cheek against Frankie’s head, “I’m going to head up, I’m pretty tired.”
Cody detangled himself from Frankie and heading to the lift, “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
Once the lift doors closed, Cody sighed and slumped against the wall, he’d wait until everyone was asleep and then go. He managed to take a bag of Wheeljack’s weapons without anyone noticing, of course, they’d probably be wondering why he left his school stuff at the base. Cody sighed through his nose, he saw where Thundercracker had been hanging around, he knew where he was. Thundercracker was going to pay.

Ultraman Z Ep. 9: “The Unidentified Object Convoy Order” (TV Review)
Tumblr media
(Original Air Date: August 15, 2020, Director: Kazuhiro Nakagawa, Writer: Satoshi Suzuki)
Since the events of the first episode, the Global Allied Forces (GAF), have been gathering some of the Ultra Medals scattered around to study their energy with the help of the Joint Advance Equipment Research Center (JAERC). When one of the facilities housing the medals is attack by the giant robot King Joe and the items are stolen, STORAGE are assigned to transport the medals left to a secure facility.
[Full Review Under the Cut]
The word “procedural” best describes the story and mood of this episode. In the last four episodes we’ve gotten; the Juggler reveal, the returns of Geed and Zero, and a deeper look into Kaburagi/Celebro’s operations. Now we’re simply seeing the STORAGE team on an assignment. While it’s not disconnected from the overarching story, since the assignment they’re on involves the Ultra Medals, it’s still a major change of pace. That this the first episode since the reveal that Hebikura hasn’t snuck off to operate as Juggler speaks to the shift. I don’t mean any of that as a point against this episode. Constant escalation gets boring in a serialized story. Breaks to see routine operations for our main ensemble add to the sense of a relative “normal” (as much as anything in a series about giant monster attacks can get) that lets the audience understand what breaks in the formula are breaking from.
How the team goes about the operation to safely transport the Ultra Medals while avoiding the space robot King Joe makes an engaging backbone for the episode. They get the assignment after seeing the video of an unseen alien threatening further robot attacks if the rest of the Ultra Medals in the GAF’s possession aren’t handed over. Hebikura shows how the plan’s set to work on a map, transporting the medals in a case designed by Yuka to hide the medals’ energy signature through a mountain road. Haruki escorting the operation in Windom in case King Joe shows up. The fight that ensues when Joe inevitably does show up sets up the robot’s ability to split into component vehicles when it needs to chase their van through a tunnel.
When the chase ends with Hebikura and Yuka surrounded by the pieces of Joe, they end up surrendering the case to the machine. They quickly reveal to Haruki that getting King Joe to chase them was the plan all along. Their case was giving out a false signal instead of hiding one. Yoko transported the actual medals to the proper JAERC facility. Haruki was kept ignorant of this aspect of the plan since Hebikura considered him “too honest” to pull off the deception. The twist of the actual plan is easy to figure out before it happens, especially when they call specific attention to Yoko’s absence in the “main” operation. Though the deception ends up not counting for much when the JAERC agent Yoko hands the medals over to ends up being a disguised Kaburagi, who immediately opens the case to draw King Joe to them.
Which leads directly into the fight between Ultraman Z and King Joe. The initial phase of this fight is a heavy hitting brawl on Zett’s part since Joe can tank his strongest attacks with barely a shrug. King Joe barely acknowledges the Ultraman’s presence except as an obstacle to his programmed goal of obtaining the medals. Though that focus shifts when Zett manages to grab the medals before Joe. Zett spends most of the fight getting physically overwhelmed, particularly in one stunning shot of him blocking one of Joe’s blasts from hitting Yoko on the ground. The turning point in the fight comes from Yuka figuring out King Joe’s vulnerable when split apart. Haruki and Zett use that information, plus the power of the new medals, to trick Joe into splitting apart and using the power of the three new medals to perform the finishing move.
Like I said earlier, this episode is mostly procedural. While that doesn’t mean it lacks in thrills and I found the effects compositing this episode to be especially well done, it does make it less dense with details to dig into. There wasn’t even a focus character this episode, like in previous ones with a similar procedural feeling. The fact that the GAF wants to study the parts of King Joe left behind after the battle shows this won’t be an episode without consequence, especially with a mysterious alien hand bursting from the wreckage. However, “The Unidentified Object Convoy Operation” ends up feeling like the most standard episode of Ultraman Z thus far.

Note
Can I request a scenario with Whirl, please? Like the human reader finally gets to see him in proper battle for the first time and is SO impressed and SO turned-on by whirl being his violent unstoppable self; they have to fuck like, STAT
When you had confessed to Whirl that you weren’t expecting to see much action during your time with the Lost Light, he had been personally offended. It was peacetime, you’d said, how much fighting could there possible be?
That didn’t stop him from blowing it way out of proportion and teasing you loud enough that people were being attracted to the commotion. You were three seconds away from pushing his drink from the table when he finally relented and frantically moved to catch the glass.
Despite the argument he had kicked up over recent events regarding phase sixers and spark eaters, Whirl had taken it up as a pet project to enlighten you. When word had gotten around the Lost Light that they would be taking on a covert Decepticon facility, Ultra Magnus had gone to great lengths to ensure that Whirl hadn’t taken you off ship to join him as an understudy.
This is how you find yourself quickly shuffling through the colossus corridors of the starship, trying to return to your habsuite before the squirmish begins. The halls are vacant in a way that almost feels stifling- with the ship’s population decreased by 85%, those who aren’t heading planetside are either secluded to the main deck or busy prepping the med bay. You might have enjoyed the peace and quiet if it hadn’t felt so eerie walking the empty corridors.
Whirl keeps you company, making idle chatter with you since they’d left for the compound. It isn’t hard to tell that he’s restless, being confined to the small transport. But he remains in high spirits, pestering you and just about everyone near him. You’ve had to dissuade him from bothering Tailgate twice now- though the minibot puts on a brave face and seems eager to prove himself, you can still see just how anxious he is. And so does Whirl, which is the problem. No matter how much he thinks he’s helping trying to get under the smaller bot’s plating in an attempt to distract him, it’s only bothering him further. You enjoyed having the opportunity to talk to the small mech, though.
You haven’t had much opportunity to see Autobots in action before, but between the two video feeds you’re patched into, you’re looking forward to what you might witness. Originally it had been Rewind who offered to give you access to what he would be recording until Whirl had also insisted on giving you a feed to his own visuals as well. There’s some remarks regarding just how lucky you are to be able to watch him in action that you can’t quite disclaim. It’s certainly something you’re looking forward to, though you don’t quite tell him yet.
In the meantime, you flip between the feeds, keeping an eye on what your associates are up to while they’re shipped off to their scheduled brawl.
You’re all curled up by the time they’re ready to drop.
A dozen mechs huddled against a loading bay door looks absolutely ridiculous. Some are trying to shove their way to the front, and you’re pretty sure Whirl just smacked someone in the face with his turrets as he pushed past them. When the alarm sounds and the doors finally open, Whirl rushes the door, taking two mechs with him.
It’s free fall from there.
When they land, they land hard. About halfway through the fall you notice an unfortunate Decepticon meandering about beneath them, and you watch with a mix between dawning horror and excitement when you realize what’s about to happen. It’s Whirl who gets to him first, and you wince as you watch the poor mech be crushed underfoot of Whirl.
“Sit back and enjoy, sweetheart! We’re only just getting started.”
And enjoy you did. Within the first minute, you’re rendered speechless. This is nothing you had expected it to be. There’s no way you would have been able to anticipate your reaction- watching Whirl, annihilate, just about everyone in his path with extreme prejudice was nothing you were prepared for. You watch transfixed, growing more uncomfortable as a knowing heat rises in you.
You’re tempted to touch yourself. You’re real tempted. The only thing stopping you is the fact Whirl’s still on the line and you honestly can’t look away even if you wanted to.
It’s sometime after when the battle’s started to dwindle does he finally address you proper. “You’ve gone awfully quiet- everything you’d hoped for when you enlisted for awesome space adventures?”
“Yeah…” It’s weaker than you wanted, and for a moment you’re afraid it’s a little too telling.
It’s enough to draw a laugh from him. “You sound like you’re the one who just mopped up a Decepticon outpost. Is there something you’re not telling me?”
The words are out before you can really think about what you’re saying. “How about you come find me and find out.”
Now that earns you a deafening silence.
For a second you fear you’ve gone too far; the only response you can glean is an odd clicking sound coming from the mech. In which you hope it’s contemplation and not revulsion.
“Whirl…?”
“Oh, don’t worry- I’m coming.”
He doesn’t make you wait long.
You can practically hear him coming. There’s a faint sound of someone hauling ass through the corridors, colliding hard into the wall somewhere in your vicinity. You’re off your feet and ready to meet him at the door before the ruckus has ended.
Whirl standing silent and foreboding as hell outside your habsuite door does not faze you. You think he might actually be quite charmed by it- your unbothered demeanor. It’s not everyday you are faced with a hulking mass that looms over you like a bad omen.
His frame is littered with scruff marks and chipped paint, and part of his antenna is certainly missing a good portion of itself. It’s easy to tell he hasn’t bothered to visit the med bay before coming here.
You’re not ashamed that your first thought isn’t having him looked after. You’re completely capable of taking care of him yourself.
He’s tense and disheveled; when he reaches out for you, it’s in a stiff manner that almost seems as though his joints are straining against the motion. He halts briefly and you can see the inner turmoil he goes through before he re-adjusts to grab you in a way he knows won’t hurt you more than he initially intended. You move to meet him, eager to clamber into his servo to allow him to lift you up. His claw nearly locks up as it circles your waist in a tight grip.
“Hoo-ly shit, you really need to relieve some of that stress.” It’s a terrible understatement.
The tip of a claw edges its way underneath your shirt, dragging sharp against the skin and revealing more of yourself to him. “You gonna help me with that?”
“Oh, you fucking know it.”
