Famed animator who along with Walt Disney brought to life Mickey Mouse, Ub Iwerks (March 24, 1901 - July 7, 1971) was born on this day March 24, 1901 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Iwerks was a loyal friend and collaborator with Walt Disney before and after the creation of the Walt Disney Studios in the early 1920s. Both Iwerks and Disney brought Mickey Mouse to life with sound in the 1928 animated short Steamboat Mickey.
Iwerks also did animation work on his own when he formed his own studio in the 1930s. According to the entry for UB Iwerks from the Encyclopedia Britannica website:
Launching his own animation studio in 1930, he supervised dozens of entries in the Flip the Frog, Willie Whopper, and ComiColor Cartoons series. During this period he made several significant contributions to the art of animation photography, notably the multiplane camera, which created a three-dimensional effect on screen.
He would return to the Walt Disney Studios in the 1940s and work there until he passed away in 1971.

During this week, we will be focusing on the Movies and the Impact of Images. I want to discuss a significant moment within the animated cartoon timeline and announce the cartoon short film which set a new standard to the entire animation industry. Above is the character Flip the Frog, the star of Fiddlesticks in 1930 who was created by Ubbe Ert Iwwerks, a.k.a Ub Iwerks. Flip was featured in 38 of Iwerks cartoons over 3 years. His appearance in the show is marked as an important moment in the history of animation. However, what I really want to discuss for this post is the show itself. The cartoon Fiddlesticks was debuted on August 16, 1930 by Ub Iwerks, an animator responsible for co creating Mickey Mouse for Walt Disney. What’s important here is that this cartoon short was the very first of its kind to combine sound and color together. The introduction of sound is a huge step within the film industry.
The short was produced in two-strip Technicolor, which according to the source is a “process that was still in constant refinement and fraught with technical difficulty.”  According to page 254 of Media and Culture, the author explains that “Technicolor, invented by an MIT scientist in 1917, had improved and was being used in more movies to draw people away from their black-and-white TVs.”
