I don’t know the full details of what happened. I think the only person that does is the driver that hit them. He blew through an intersection without stopping and hit my dad’s tiny little sports convertible from behind. We think he drove off and then suddenly grew a conscience before turning around. Told his insurance company that he “didn’t think anyone was seriously injured.” Both of my parents are in the ICU. My dad had to be intubated, and had a 4 hour long surgery to stabilize a spinal fracture. I haven’t seen the mangled corpse of the car, but if I had to guess, it’s lost a significant amount of its length just from being crushed. My parents are so, so, so lucky to be alive. My mom was just conscious enough to call 911. If she had passed out like my dad, I don’t doubt one or both of them would be dead. Didn’t think anyone was seriously injured though! No worries!

I’ve never been more livid in my life. If I ever see this guy face to face, he’s at least getting a loud earful from me. Christ, dude.

My parents were in a really bad car wreck on Saturday night. They’ll both survive but they got pretty fucked up and I need to take leave from work to help them.

I really am my mom’s child, though. Her first thought after being deemed stable enough to use the phone in her room was “Oh shit I have responsibilities” and called up some of her friends at 1 AM to make sure stuff was taken care of. My first thought upon contacting work was “Oh shit my cubicle is kind of a mess.”

Honestly talking about election stuff with people is the most frustrating thing for me rn. I have not been maintaining my compassion. People read everything in such bad faith and they are so mean and cruel and hateful. Even if you agree with everything they say, we are all just so wound up and wounded. I know I’ve been a perpetrator of that too.

Just…uuuggghhhhhhhhhh

I try to remind myself that the reason for all of this is that we want the world to be better. People have different ideas of what that means and what to do about it and how change happens. But please please please, if what somone wants is to live in a kinder world, where people are taken care of, and people are joyful, then try to see yourself as on the same team. If they believe in those same basic values, then they may be misguided on tactics and pathways to improve things, or even what is possible. But the way to correct those things isn’t to scream and yell and shame people who already agree with you at the core. It’s to teach. And it might be hard and they might have hang ups and they might be too wired up to have a conversation. But if you both want to live in a word of love, then do your damndest to start and end in a place of love.

Read people in good faith, take breaks, be kind, and work together when you can. If someone at the potluck is voting for Kamala and you hate her, that sucks, but you can still take the leftovers and give them to homeless folks. You can still make good work out of it. If someone you know refuses to vote and that’s what you care about the most, but they will let your friend crash on their couch, then you can still make good work out of that.

A better world is one where we take care of each other. It takes many different approaches. It takes people trying to reform the system and people trying to destroy the system. Mostly, it takes people trying to build systems of care that aren’t relevant to The System at all. There may be more or less effective approaches and we should try to do what’s the most helpful. But don’t let your desire for everyone to be on exactly the right path lead you to pushing them off the road altogether.

Don’t abandon your infrastructures of care.

What we build is most important.
