Today in USamerican health care is insane

About a month ago I went to the doctor for a checkup. She ordered some labs just to keep an eye on a few things. Some nothing-special tests on a blood draw.

I have health insurance through my employer*, thank god.

Today I got the bill.

Total cost of five tests: $478.80 Adjustments**: $425.79 What I owe: $53.01

I can pay the $53. Not worried about it.

Whenever I receive a bill like this I think about people without health insurance or who are under-insured, meaning they have insurance but can't afford to use it unless things are dire because they can't pay their part of the bill. So they wait until something awful happens and might end up bankrupt anyway.

This system is inhumane and obscene. * Non-USamericans, know that I still have to pay a monthly premium. My employer pays thousands to have a plan for the bunch of us. I couldn't afford this coverage without the money my employer contributes. This is the case for literally millions of USamericans.
