President George W. Bush gave a speech aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. In the speech he announced the end to major combat operations in Iraq. In just over a month the United States and a coalition of the willing invaded and deposed the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein. Although the original purpose of the mission had been completed the US involvement in the Iraqi War would last from 2003 to 2011, and again in 2014 during the Iraq Civil War. President Bush was criticized for his speech onboard the USS Lincoln because of the banner stating “Mission Accomplished” as the rest of his presidency and the majority of Obama’s first term would be spent involved in the Iraq War.
