RAF Typhoons participate in large-scale international exercise in Qatar
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 28/11/2023 - 15:58in Military
Typhoon fighters of the XI Squadron (Hunting) of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) participated in a major international exercise in Qatar.
The exercise known as Ferocious Falcon V involved forces from Qatar, France, Italy, Turkey and the United States. The RAF Coningsby Base Typhoons also joined elements of the 1º Scottish Guard Battalion and HMS Lancaster.
Tumblr media
The exercise led by Qatar was designed to bring together partner forces to increase combat efficiency and increase unity. The exercise also strengthens the bonds of friendship, support for joint action and the exchange of experiences with these countries.

Elements of Qatar's land, naval and air forces participated in the exercise. The goal of the emirate of Qatar was for all military personnel from the participating countries to gain experience on the ground and strengthen international relations through cooperation in various missions.
“This exercise provided greater exposure to our allies in the Extended Middle East, facilitating advanced training and integration. The small deployment of specialized pilots and engineers provided 100% exercise mission completion rates and the opportunity to work closely with international allies was invaluable," said Squadron Leader Hodgkinson, Commander of Squadron XI (F). "Squad XI (F) Squadron, like the rest of the Typhoon Force, is ready to project air combat around the world. We completed the Bersama Lima Exercise in Malaysia and then returned to the Middle East for this exercise, reflecting the agility and resilience that the squadron and aircraft offer".
Tumblr media
The RAF Typhoons flying from a Qatari air base conducted Defensive Counter-Air training with the other nations participating in the exercise. Qatar is an important defense partner of the United Kingdom and currently two joint squadrons of the RAF - United Arab Emirates Air Force operate based in the United Kingdom.

Okay this may be an odd ask, but are their any planes that you think that your blorbos would like, either in the sense that they’d just be interested in it or they’d actually want to fly it?
I'm so sorry to be answering this like three weeks after I got this, but I've spent time pondering this because I was so excited when I saw this ask! 💖 I saw this ask when I hopped on here during my break to make a post about the weather, and let me tell you when I saw this my heart soared (pun 100% intended). I've been trying to figure out what blorbos I want to use and what planes would best match their personality, what they would like to fly, and one that would be their favorite
You may be thinking "Pine, how does a plane match someone's personality?" 🤨 Very valid question, but performance, characteristics, handling, and role are important in aircraft and they all have their own unique "personalities" too oddly enough! I know I sound off my rocker for saying this, but trust me it's true
I'm going to use just three different characters because two of them came to my mind at the mention of "planes" and one because, well, he's the blorbo this blog is dedicated to! I'm not going to be very descriptive of these because then this post would be waaaay longer than it already is, so you're just going to have to trust me on my choices 👍
First we'll start off with none other than Mr. Luther Hargreeves!
Tumblr media
Something neat about the show is that it actually shows us what kind of aircraft Luther is interested in! In his room we can see multiple aircraft models and paintings. From what I have seen these include a: Spitfire, B-24, B-52, Lancaster, A-36/P-51A, Ju-87, Short Sunderland, a handful of little made up airplane trinkets, and a USS Macon (ZRS-5) airship.
He also has a few rocket models, but I'm not really going to pay attention to those and more so focus on the planes instead. Excluding the last two items I mentioned, we can notice two interesting patterns amongst these aircraft models and paintings.
All of these models are of WWII aircraft, besides the B-52 and ZRS-5, so Luther really likes aircraft from WWII!
He likes Allied aircraft! The Ju-87 is the only Axis WWII aircraft out of the bunch. He especially loves Commonwealth aircraft. He has two different paintings of Spitfires, the Lancaster model, and the Short Sunderland model, which were all used by the Commonwealth (and sometimes other Allied countries but I'm not going to make it complicated)
So I'm going to give Luther the Supermarine Spitfire (no specific variant) for his favorite plane since he has three of them amongst the two paintings in his room.
Tumblr media
I think Luther would then love to fly the X-15 since he likes space/rockets too and the X-15 is a rocket powered plane used by NASA
Tumblr media
And finally, I think the Bristol Beaufighter best matches Luther's personality. The funny thing about this plane is that as soon as I saw this ask I knew I would be including Luther, and my mind immediately associated "Bristol Beaufighter" with Luther though I didn't know much about the plane. I knew of it, but didn't really know the role it played in the war so after looking it up, I think it fits him personality wise!
Tumblr media
Next up is no one other than my beloved Armin Arlert!
Tumblr media
For his favorite plane, I am going to give him the H-4 Hercules aka the "Spruce Goose" since he loves the ocean and was fascinated by flying things
Tumblr media
A plane I think he'd want to fly is the Grumman Goose. Again, it's a floatplane but this one is way smaller than the Hercules and I think it would be fun to explore smaller bodies of water in. It can also land on land too so overall it's a neat little plane to explore in!
Tumblr media
The plane I think best matches his personality is the E-2 Hawkeye. Like Armin, this aircraft isn't a fighter, but is instead used as an advanced battle management and strategic planner for its allies
Tumblr media
And finally, the blorbo ever, Five Hargreeves!
Tumblr media
He was a little bit difficult to choose for since he doesn't have anything related to aviation in his life besides causing the Hindenburg to crash, but since I've been interested in aviation for basically my entire life I know what planes boomers are attracted to lol
Five's favorite plane would be the P-51D Mustang since it's such a hotrod of an aircraft and a fantastic fighter. Like I said about boomers, this is a plane that they love (gotta be 100% honest nearly every avgeek loves the Mustang) Five wants a 1970s Corvette Stingray and while this may not be from the same era, hotrods and WWII fighter planes go together like bread and butter so I think he'd love it. The P-51 is also a timeless aircraft, just like how Five is like a timeless person (lol)
Tumblr media
As for the plane I think he'd want to fly, it would be the Hawker Hunter. I think Five would like something that can go fast but also something that isn't too flashy but is still a classic aircraft. I think Five would also appreciate this old plane, that is certainly outdated, but is actually still used to participate in combat just like him
Tumblr media
Lastly, and I hate to be that person but I'm totally going to be that person, I think the F-22 Raptor matches Five personality wise. I feel like this is too obvious of a plane to give to Five (I was actually going to give him the Me 163 for this one) but I feel that the most deadly assassin in his world deserves the (potentially) most deadly plane in our world. The F-22 is stealthy, fast, extremely agile, extremely maneuverable, and just like Five it can kill without ever being seen by the enemy. If it does have to engage in close combat, it is a fearsome opponent and almost always has the upper hand
Tumblr media
The fun thing about this is that there are sooooo many other aircraft that would match these characters too so the possibilities are almost endless. Thank you so much for this fun ask, and I am so sorry for not being able to answer it until now! If I ever want to ask my doctor about an autism diagnosis and they ask why, I am going to show them this post 🫶

William Barker Cushing was born in Delafield, Wisconsin, on November 4th, 1842, but spent most of his childhood in Fredonia, New York. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1857 until March 1861, when his high-spirited behavior led to his resignation. The outbreak of the Civil War brought him back into the service, and he soon distinguished himself as an officer of extraordinary initiative and courage. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in mid-1862, Cushing served as Executive Officer of the gunboat Commodore Perry, then was given command of the tug Ellis, which was lost under heroic circumstances on 25 November 1862. He subsequently commanded the gunboats Commodore Barney, Shokokon and Monticello. During this time, he led several daring reconnaissance and raiding excursions into Confederate territories.
On the night of October 27-28, 1864, Cushing and a small crew took the Navy steam launch Picket Boat Number One upriver to Plymouth, NC, where they attacked and sank the Confederate ironclad ram CSS Albemarle with a spar torpedo. This action made him a national celebrity, and he was quickly promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In January 1865, Cushing helped lead the Navy landing force in the conquest of Fort Fisher, NC, again distinguishing himself.
Following the Civil War, LCdr. Cushing was executive officer of USS Lancaster and commanding officer of USS Maumee. Promoted to Commander in 1872, he was captain of USS Wyoming in 1873-74. In November 1873, he boldly confronted Spanish authorities in Cuba to save the lives of many passengers and crew of the steamer Virginius, which had been captured bringing men and supplies to Cuban revolutionaries. While serving as Executive Officer of the Washington Navy Yard, DC, Commander Cushing's always delicate health gave way and he died on December 17th, 1874.

Keener, The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw, (also known by its Sikorsky model number, S-55) was a multi-purpose helicopter used by the United States Army and United States Air Force. It was also license-built by Westland Aircraft as the Westland Whirlwind in the United Kingdom. United States Navy and United States Coast Guard models were designated HO4S, while those of the U.S. Marine Corps were designated HRS. In 1962, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Marine Corps versions were all redesignated as H-19s like their U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force counterparts.
The H-19's first flight was on November 10, 1949 and it entered operations in 1950. Over 1,000 of the helicopters were manufactured by Sikorsky for the United States. An additional 550 were manufactured by licensees of the helicopter including Westland Aircraft, the Société nationale des constructions aéronautiques du sud-est (SNCASE) in France and Mitsubishi in Japan.
The helicopter was widely exported, used by many other nations, including Portugal, Greece, Israel, Chile, South Africa, Denmark and Turkey.
In 1954 the Marines tested an idea to assist the rotors lift better in hot or high climates and if the helicopter was overloaded, by installing a rocket nozzle at the tip of each rotor blade with the fuel tank located in the center above the rotor blade hub. Enough fuel was provided for seven minutes of operation
The H-19 Chickasaw holds the distinction of being the US Army's first true transport helicopter and, as such, played an important role in the initial formulation of Army doctrine regarding air mobility and the battlefield employment of troop-carrying helicopters. The H-19 underwent live service tests in the hands of the 6th Transportation Company, during the Korean War beginning in 1951 as an unarmed transport helicopter. Undergoing tests such as medical evacuation, tactical control and front-line cargo support, the helicopter succeeded admirably in surpassing the capabilities of the H-5 Dragonfly which had been used throughout the war by the Army.

US H-19C in Korea. The U.S. Air Force ordered 50 H-19A’s for rescue duties in 1951. These aircraft were the primary rescue and medical evacuation helicopters for the USAF during the Korean War. The Air Force continued to use the H-19 through the 1960s, ultimately acquiring 270 of the H-19B model.[2]
France made aggressive use of helicopters in Algeria, both as troop transports and gunships, Piasecki/Vertol H-21 and Sud-built Sikorski H-34 helicopters rapidly displaced fixed-wing aircraft for the transport of paras and quick-reaction commando teams. In Indochina, a small number of Hiller H-23s and Sikorsky H-19s were available for casualty evacuation. In 1956, the French Air Force experimented with arming the H-19, then being superseded in service by the more capable Piasecki H-21 and Sikorsky H-34 helicopters. The H-19 was originally fitted with a 20-mm cannon, two rocket launchers, plus a 20-mm cannon, two 12.7-mm machine guns, and a 7.5-mm light machine gun firing from the cabin windows, but this load proved far too heavy, and even lightly armed H-19 gunships fitted with flexible machine guns for self-defense proved underpowered.
The H-19 was also used in the early days of the Vietnam War before being supplanted by the Sikorsky H-34 Choctaw, which was based on the H-19.
