Liberal outlets usually have smaller audiences individually, but if you add up all of the outlets that are considered left or left-center they probably outnumber the outlets that are considered to be conservative, and all of their audiences combined might slightly outnumber how many people make up conservative audiences. However, their coverage tends to be more balanced, as more of these “liberal” outlets lean toward the center versus the majority of conservative outlets.

The top five newspapers are the right-center-leaning Wall Street Journal (42 million viewers/month), the left-leaning New York Times (9.33 million viewers/month), the left-center leaning USA Today (50 million viewers/month), the left-center leaning Washington Post (58 million viewers in December 2022), and the left-center leaning L.A. Times (4.1 million views/week) (Newspaper/Magazine - Associate Print & Digital Sites).
Ownership becomes a little more interesting because a few large companies own most of the broadcast television networks (A Look Into Broadcast). Comcast owns NBC, including MSNBC, National Amusements owns CBS, Disney owns ABC, and the Murdoch Family owns FOX, including FOX News (A Look Into Broadcast). When it comes to newspapers, the Murdoch Family owns the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times is independently owned, Gannet Co., Inc owns USA Today, Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post, and Patrick Soon-Shiong owns the L.A. Times (Newspaper/Magazine - Associate Print & Digital Sites). It may not be a few large companies that own the majority of the popular newspapers, but the only difference is that individual billionaires own some of them.
Another interesting thing to look at is age. The median age of primetime viewers of CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX ranges between 56 to 64 years old (A Look Into Broadcast). Meanwhile, more viewers aged 25-54 watched FOX News followed by CNN and then MSNBC (A Look Into Broadcast). It should be mentioned that CNN leans left of center and MSNBC leans even further left of center (A Look Into Broadcast). For radio, more than 244.5 million American adults listen to the radio each month, making radio the leading reach platform (Radio: Listeners/Viewers). For online news sites, most of Breitbart News’ audience ranges from ages 45-54 (Web and News Sites and Social Media). It’s considered far-right on the spectrum (Web and News Sites and Social Media). Vox, on the other hand, is left-leaning with a large percentage of the audience being between the ages of 25 and 34 (Web and News Sites and Social Media). They had 19.4 million visits in December 2022 (Web and News Sites and Social Media). The Hill skews conservative and had 43 million visits in December 2022, and the majority of the readers are between 35 and 64 years old (Web and News Sites and Social Media).
Television viewership during prime news times sharply increased between 2019-2020 for FOX News while viewership of CNN and MSNBC slightly increased during the same time (A Look Into Broadcast). Over three million televisions tuned into FOX News by 2020, and only 1.8 million and 1.6 million televisions tuned into CNN and MSNBC by 2020, respectively (A Look Into Broadcast). “Despite outlets such as MSNBC and CNN gaining a lot of viewers simply because of their own daily and nightly programs, their total viewership did not reach the heights that FOX News’ did,” (A Look Into Broadcast). Newspaper readership is declining, despite many newspapers having online versions (Newspaper/Magazine - Associate Print & Digital Sites).
After looking at the research, it’s more clear that “the media” is pretty balanced when you look at the big picture. Conservative outlets tend to have more viewers, listeners, and readers, and they tend to lean more drastically to the right. There tend to be more overall liberal outlets with fewer viewers, listeners, and readers individually, but if you add them all together they will probably equal or surpass the conservative outlets. However, liberal outlets tend to lean more toward the center and be more balanced overall. In some ways, the internet provides a more level playing field because anyone can post information. The difficult thing is driving people to your information. When it comes to that, the media giants still have the edge, which is why they are the ones we look to in order to judge if the media is conservative or liberal. The power of information still remains largely in the hands of a small minority, all of whom are wealthy.

Is there any evidence that BLM is being run by Communists and Marxists, and if so what is that evidence? TL;DR: Yes, there is absolutely a widespread Communist influence on the coordinators of BlackLivesMatter, all the way from the founders at the top to individual state-level leadership.
1) The biggest piece of evidence is statements made by the founders themselves.
• Patrice Cullors, one of the starting founders and top leaders of BLM along with Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi, did a 2015 videotaped interview with a progressive media outlet called TheRealNews.com.
Radio Host: "There is a concern that there is a lack of perhaps, ideological direction in BlackLivesMatter, that would allow it to fizzle out in comparison to OccupyWallStreet. As you are advanced in your own organization, as you are headed to Cleveland to participate in this BlackLives movement conference, how do you respond to that particular critique?"
Cullors: "The first thing I think is that, we actually do have an ideological frame. Myself and Alicia in particular are trained organizers. We are trained Marxists. We are super versed on, sort of, ideological theories."
There is basically only one reasonable way to interpret this. Either Cullors is a Marxist outright or at the very least she believes Marxist ideology is an important part of BLM because she mentioned it as an explicit answer to the question "is there an ideological direction in BlackLivesMatters?".
• The other person mentioned above, Alicia Garza, wrote in her self-bio on blackpast.org that "Garza describes herself as a queer social justice activist and a Marxist". That article was written in June 2018, so not long ago. However in the last month, the mention of Marxism on her bio has been deleted. A charitable observer could conclude that means she no longer identifies with Marxism. A less charitable observer may conclude that she is trying to hide her political leaning from the public now that BLM is more popular. It is impossible to look into people's minds so it would be unfair to guess one way or another. But we can confidently say that for the first several years of the organization's founding, she too identified as a Marxist.
• The third founder, Opal Tometi, has not explicitly linked herself to Marxism. However she has also indicated sympathy for the ideals of socialist nations. In a very long open letter she states Hugo Chavez was a fair democratic leader with a positive legacy, and that it is slander to call him a dictator. "In these last 17 years, we have witnessed the Bolivarian Revolution champion participatory democracy and construct a fair, transparent election system recognized as among the best in the world... we denounce the corporate media lies about electoral corruption voiced by Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sander’s defamation of late President Hugo Chavez labeling him a dictator."
2) Of course, BLM is not a monolithic organization, so the fact that all 3 founders have sympathy for communist ideals doesn't imply every BLM activist feels the same way. That then leads to the question: what are the political leanings of ground-level leadership who do the daily coordinating? Similar sentiments have been echoed by lower level leadership across the country. BlackLivesMatters DC, for example, is one of the biggest sub-groups within the movement, and includes on its webpage a dedication to "creating the conditions for Black Liberation through the abolition of systems and institutions of white supremacy, capitalism, patriarchy and colonialism." By definition, the abolition (not reform or tempering, but abolition) of capitalism is a clear endorsement of the socialist-communist spectrum. Seeing that capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit, abolishing that would necessarily mean not allowing private ownership of means of production and not allowing private profit. In other words, total publicly distributed ownership of property. In other words, somewhere on the spectrum between socialism and communism.
3) Usage of terminology frequently associated with Marxists. This latter point is circumstantial but relevant. BLM frequently uses words and terms that have a rich interconnection with communist movements. Notably "comrade", a preferred term for communists to refer to each other throughout the 20th century. The word comrade shows up all over the place in BLM. The national BLM website says on their main page, "we recommit to healing ourselves and each other, and to co-creating alongside comrades". BLM Los Angeles mentions that "we practice empathy. We engage comrades with the intent to learn about and connect with their contexts. Opal Tometi, the third BLM founder, mentioned in an interview with the New Yorker that "I worked with some amazing comrades in New York"
4) Support from communist organizations. This is again circumstantial just like #3, but relevant because it shows that socialist/communist organizations feel like the leadership of BLM is guiding the organization in a way that they like. SocialistRevolution.org did an article on outreach among BLM members and stated that "This was not the same Black Lives Matter movement from a few years ago, but represented a qualitative leap forward in consciousness for many young people who are looking for ideas. The growing openness to Marxism was evident at the end of the demonstration when our tables were swamped by people, many of whom bought our literature and asked to get involved." Communist Party USA likewise is optimistic about BlackLivesMatters and thinks that it will lead to establishment of communism in the U.S. On their website, they state Black Lives Matter has become the slogan of choice, a rallying call of demonstrators filling the streets, and a broadly accepted driving force for change.

Helping the UN Guide Ecosystem Restoration Into the Mainstream
When the United Nations General Assembly declared 2021–2030 as the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, it did so with an objective of taking a leadership role to find nature-based solutions to restore vital ecosystems around the globe.
The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to massively scale up the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems as a proven measure to fight the climate crisis and enhance food security, water supply and biodiversity. It is targeting widespread engagement with governments, UN agencies, international non-government organizations, academia and large corporations.
“This initiative moves ecosystem restoration from a fringe movement to an essential response necessary to protect our global food and water supply and help change the trajectory of climate change,” said Jennifer Brunton, WSP USA national practice lead for ecosystem restoration.
For its part, WSP provided feedback for the strategy report, United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 - Strategy for the Decade.
As identified in the report, “The global public is largely unaware of the extent to which ecosystem degradation is impacting the well-being and livelihoods of billions of people, the costs of this degradation, and the profound benefits that would accrue with major investments in ecosystem restoration.”
“At the end of the decade, my hope is that the political support and public will is behind the scale of restoration needed,” Brunton said. “Policies, regulations, and legislation are changed to promote smart growth and habitat protection/restoration, and the financial mechanisms for supporting ecosystem restoration are in place.”
Key Objectives
The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration has set several key objectives. The effort aims to:
showcase successful government-led and private initiatives to halt ecosystem degradation, restore those ecosystems that have already been degraded;
enhance knowledge exchange on what works and why (policy, economics and biophysical aspects), and how to implement restoration at scale;
connect initiatives working in the same landscape, region, or topic, to increase efficiency and impact;
create links between ecosystem restoration opportunities and initiatives with businesses interested in building a solid portfolio of sustainable production and impact investment; and
bring a wider spectrum of actors on board, especially from sectors that are not traditionally involved, by demonstrating the importance of ecosystem restoration to conservation as well as generation of social and economic benefits.
“I have seen the transformation that can happen when ecosystem restoration projects are implemented,” Brunton said. “It’s a powerful thing to witness a barren landscape change into lush breeding and foraging grounds supporting a diverse array of species. It can be done.”
The UN initiative is raising the understanding that widespread improvements on a local scale will have a profound impact on the global environment.
“Our ecosystems are connected in a complex web, and that includes us humans,” Brunton said. “The fish we buy at the market may breed in marshes, rivers, or streams but spend their adult life migrating in the open ocean. This results in an interconnectedness between us as individuals and habitats that extend well beyond our borders.”
She added that the UN initiative “aims at articulating these links to target shifts in culture and political/economic drivers so the act of restoring habitat is part of a broader initiative and ecological restoration is mainstreamed.” Brunton stressed that there must be complete ownership of responsibility for the environment, even when it is not in our own backyard.
“For example, the destruction of rainforests do affect us through this network; it is not some far way problem for someone else,” Brunton said. “The products we buy connect us to these degradations. For example, the fruit we buy at the store may be grown in fields developed from clearing the rainforest.”
Environmental Partnerships
Currently, the UN lacks the technical capacity to implement a strategy to address the scale of restoration needed on its own and is looking to corporate partners like WSP to help guide its successful development.

WSP has been involved in several ecological restoration projects that exemplify the goals of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration initiative, including:
Higbee Beach Tidal Wetland Restoration – The restoration of several hundred acres of marsh into a greenway near Cape May, New Jersey is providing habitat for migratory species, and supports maritime and early successional forest, as well as a public access network. WSP’s restoration design is grounded in science and supported by extensive baseline studies, including hydrodynamic modeling, extensive sediment sampling, and detail threatened and endangered species surveys.
Saw Mill Creek Wetland Mitigation Bank – A 68-acre wetlands area on Staten Island has been threatened by flooding, invasive weeds and illegal dumping for years, and suffered severe degradation following Superstorm Sandy in 2012. To turn the tide, the New York City Economic Development Corporation selected WSP to provide wetland restoration for New York City’s first wetland mitigation bank.
Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan – WSP is providing the South Florida Water Management District with scientists, engineers and restoration specialists to protect the water supply and control flooding in the region by preventing saltwater intrusion, encouraging responsible agriculture and urban development, and preserving fish and wildlife habitat in the Everglades.
Lincoln Park Wetlands Restoration – A large tidal marsh was designed by WSP to fit into the natural landscape adjacent to Lincoln Park in Jersey City, which had become a landfill without a permit. Today the wetlands, streams and salt marshes, once blighted with debris, are now restored with 42 acres of tidal habitats, new inter-tidal channels, and public walking trails.
Wisconsin Point Dune Restoration – A three-mile-long natural sand spit along Lake Superior, part of one of the longest freshwater sandbars in the world and a popular recreation area, had become degraded by excessive heavy foot traffic and activity, destabilizing the shoreline. WSP provided environmental and resilient design services to restore and stabilize 48,000 square feet of sand dune habitat.
Future Generations
The work carried out today will leave a legacy for future generations, and Brunton believes that this initiative is one way to establish tangible positive impacts in our own generation.
“We have the understanding of the negative impacts of habitat degradation on climate change, food security, and biodiversity; and we also know the substantial benefits gained from uplifting degraded habitat to high functioning systems,” Brunton said. “What we have not done effectively is integrate these facts into the political and economic engines that are driving protection and restoration of habitat. This initiative aims to infuse a respect for habitat health into the global culture.”
She believes it is possible to map ways for development to progress in balance with the global health.
“We have not run out of time to repair the imprint we have left on the earth’s landscape,” Brunton said. “It will require slicing the problem from many angles – economic, political, cultural. The UN is the one entity infused globally whose network and influence can forge the change needed.”

So far that has not occurred.
Many US systems with reasonable backing by the franchisor have had great success over the years in Australia, whether that has been QSRs like McDonald’s, KFC, Subway and Dominos, convenience stores like 7-Eleven or fitness franchises like Anytime Fitness, Orange Theory and Extend Barre.
New systems are also coming into Australia, and these are not always in the food and fitness business. OsteoStrong and Carl’s Jr are examples of well-financed expansions into the country. Some systems have come and gone – and are returning again! Taco Bell has entered Australia twice previously and is setting up again, as has Cinnabon, which came to Australia in 2002. We can only wish them success this time around and hope they have learned from their previous experiences.
Franchise Council of Australia
Australia has a strong body pushing franchising forwards in the form of the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA). The FCA has Chapters in all mainland states, and runs a three-day National Franchise Convention every year, which is seen as the peak industry event, culminating in the Gala Awards Dinner and the announcements of the awards including Franchisor of the Year – won in 2018 by Hire a Hubby, Australia’s largest handyman system.
Education is one of the cornerstones of the FCA, and they and Griffith University have worked with the ACCC to ensure there is free online education available for anyone considering taking on a franchise. Many experts in the industry have contributed to create a strong level of education.

Franchising has become a mature distribution method for many major companies. The Federal Government has stepped in to place some forms of national regulation over it, by legislating a Code of Conduct, which is administered by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The Code of Conduct aims to:

Any company wishing to franchise in Australia must comply with the Code of Conduct or risk prosecution by the ACCC.
There has been some push from various state governments over the last 10 years to introduce their own separate regulations, however, this has not come to pass, meaning that we have one set of regulations Australia-wide. The huge advantage of this is to minimise red tape. This sets Australia apart from countries such as the USA where states may have their own franchise regulations, Complying with registration and fees from one state to another can be very complex.

Franchising is moving slowly forward in Australia where we have a relatively mature market, and a great variety of systems working under the franchise format. Australia is open to business for international franchise systems to enter the market with minimal foreign ownership constraints. The main point of difference to many other countries is our relatively mature legislation which is aimed at ensuring the franchisor acts responsibly and encourages franchisees to be properly funded and act in a responsible and legal manner.
