[TRIVIA]
The Prince of Tennis 10.5 Fanbook | Publication Date: 11/02/2001
Although he’s lived in the USA, he still prefers Japanese food and isn’t fond of Western food
People tend to be aggravated by him due to his abrasive personality, but he means no ill-intent by it
He gained his arrogant and abrasive personality from growing up in the USA
He will speak his mind regardless of how it sounds as he believes it’s a way of being kind
His first name is written in katakana rather than kanji. It’s alluded that it may be due to his mother being another nationality besides Japanese
Konomi had Ryoma wear a hat since he thought it was cool, and wanted people to associate his FILA hat with him
He is called “Shorty” by Kikumaru but does not mind it since he states height doesn’t matter in tennis
He likes grape-flavored Fanta/Ponta
He keeps everything he needs for school in his tennis bag, hence why he gets confused when some items are still in it
He is described as pessimistic, but shy, gentle, and always striving for improvement
Konomi originally did not intend for him to be the protagonist. The role was originally going to be given to Kintarou, with Ryoma being his rival. He initially thought Ryoma would be difficult to portray as a protagonist, be better as a sub character, and that making him the protagonist would dampen the mood of the series. He eventually decided on Ryoma and built the other characters around him
Konomi describes him as a “bad guy,” and that him defeating people who are even worse is a focal point of the series
The Prince of Tennis 20.5 Fanbook | Publication Date: 12/04/2003
He is described to easily get engaged in a single subject and then excel in that area
When he concentrates, he will become so absorbed in what he’s doing that he will not pay attention to his surroundings
He is described to be suited for professions that require special skills, such as a pilot or astronaut
He is very susceptible to change and has an insatiable desire to become stronger
One of his favorite subjects is chemistry since the science behind the substances changing, combining, and gaining different properties reminds him of tennis
He does not remember when he started playing tennis, and states he thinks he’s been playing it since he was born
His secondary sport would be soccer
The Prince of Tennis 40.5 Fanbook | Publication Date: 12/04/2007
He is described to be sociable and lively, but doesn’t get too involved in his personal relationships and tends to be reserved
His friends and schoolmates often visited his house when he lived in the US
He did not know what “Old Maid” was until he played it at the joint training camp with Rokkaku
In Genius 305, when he had won his match against Atobe and everyone huddled around him, someone had quietly handed him the shaver, but it’s a mystery on who it was
He considers Kintarou to be quite strong, and wouldn’t mind having an official match with him someday
He is the character Konomi states he has the least in common with, the second being Tezuka
The Prince of Tennis II Official Character Guide: PairPuri Vol. 1 | Publication Date: 11/04/2009
He, Krauser, Atobe, and Yagyuu were heard having a conversation together in English
The Prince of Tennis II Official Character Guide: PairPuri Vol. 2 | Publication Date: 12/04/2009
He takes naps around the training camp along with Jirou
The Prince of Tennis II Official Character Guide: PairPuri Vol. 4 | Publication Date: 02/04/2010
He had gotten his hat mixed up with Sanada’s
The Prince of Tennis II Official Character Guide: PairPuri Vol. 5 | Publication Date: 03/04/2010
He likes his grilled fish with not many bones and finds removing them to be annoying
The person he currently dislikes the most is his father
If he had a long vacation, he would go play tennis on the western side of Japan since he states they have strong opponents
He wants to win all four major world tennis championships
When asked what kind of plant or animal he is like, he replies with a cat since they’re free-spirited
When asked what his current goals are, he replies that he wants to fight more stronger opponents and win against them
He is named after Ooka Echizen, also known as Ooka Tadasuke
Konomi came up with his “Selfless State” technique since he wanted to write a story where the main character’s dormant power would awaken when faced against an unbeatable enemy. And since Ryoma was a returnee, he had him speak in English to surprise the audience and give his scenes a fantasy-like feel
Konomi corrects his statement that Ryoma didn’t win national USA junior tournaments four years in a row, he had meant that when Ryoma started tennis, he had competed and won in regular USA junior tournaments four times in a row
Konomi states he has tried drawing Ryoma more mature as the series progresses and draws Ryoma’s shoes and racket bigger to make him appear smaller

The Prince of Tennis II 23.5 Fanbook | Publication Date: 05/02/2018
When he and Ryoga were younger, they went out to play and had gotten lost for three days. They eventually managed to hitchhike home
Konomi had originally intended to show him being anxious about joining team USA, and then being helped by them to join team Japan again
Konomi states he may continue Ryoma and Fuji’s match in the rain
The items Horio had brought to the camp for him were Fanta/Ponta
The Prince of Tennis 20th Anniversary Book: Tenipuri Party | Publication Date: 08/02/2019
He did not mind playing for team USA and states the country doesn’t matter as long as he can play tennis
He did not care about being on the same team as Ryoga and had actually wanted to play against him
He states he felt some changes when viewing team Japan from an outside perspective
He returned to team Japan because he had thought of the people who made him stronger and wanted to fight alongside them

I have to laugh at your surprise with the fighting in hockey because I don’t even follow it that closely but I grew up right outside of Philadelphia so I am of course a flyers fan because to root for anything other than a Philly team would be blasphemy (though everyone in the family roots for Michigan in college hockey because I went there)
we went to the game against the rangers last month and the little pre-show with Gritty was literally him doing the training montage from Rocky (do people outside the US know Rocky or know just how important a Philly thing that movie is?) and then “getting into the ring” with a guy in a rangers jersey and “knocking him out”
lmao youre definitely allowed to laugh at me, i am too!! i watch a lot of handball, which i know isnt a thing in america so i wont blame you for not knowing what it is, but it's also a really physical sport where you're allowed to tackle each other to the ground and push each other around and so on (without any protection, though) – BUT i have never in my 22 years seen an actual fistfight on the court. if two players get angry at each other, they can kinda like shove each other a little bit then the refs jump in instantly and they get penalties (and can be forced to leave the match). but ive never never never seen even a single punch thrown. so like idk i knew it was physical but it still surprised me!!
i actually rewatched the devils/rangers game yesterday (it was on the tv surprisingly lol) and i think one of the main things that hit me was like… how silly it looked? maybe something is wrong with me for not finding fights like that cool or attractive or whatever?? but esp when they had their gloves on and stood there, it looked like they were just bad boxers 😭 and then there was one sequence where the two players just kept on missing each other bcs after trying to throw a hit, they would dodge, so they just kept going back and forth like that without anyone actually landing a hit??? 😭😭
THOUGH!! just remembered that i watched the uhhhh i guess it was the junior world finals? almost a year ago? usa vs sweden? seeing the fight at the end there just bcs the swedes were losing 😐 at least fight bcs of something reasonable, not just "we're losing, i have to show him that i hate him" or whatever
#i know about rocky but i didnt know that it was a philly thing!! :0#but i mean. i havent actually watched it 😭 so maybe its obvious but i just didnt know#(i have seen like 0 movies)#thats very iconic of them tho if its a clear philly thing 🤩🤩 very clever#asks!#anon!#jackie talks hockey!

Sports in a Solarpunk World
Let me end this week with another question that I have seen discussed a ton within the Solarpunk community, when it comes both to worldbuilding and imagining a better future.
What would sports look like in a Solarpunk future?
Usually the discussion of this topic centers around the topics of tribalism and rivalry and whether sports, which usually have the goal of winning over others, are really in line with the collectivist Solarpunk mindset.
I, meanwhile, see the real issue with sports in something else. Say it with me now: Capitalism.
But let me quickly explain: I do not think that in general things were two or more parties are in rivalry with each other and play games were one person wins and another looses are really a big problem. Winning and loosing is okay and it is not anti-solarpunk, as long as not too much value is linked to the winning.
The tribalism, of course, is more of a problem. But the tribalism is actually also quite linked to the entire capitalism thing.
Hear me out: If we talk "sports" right now, we usually talk about the big leagues. What that means might depend on your country. In Germany we might be talking about soccer and handball. In the USA it might be football, baseball or basketball. In Canada it is probably hockey. And in Japan probably soccer and baseball.
You know. Those big sports, where people in the country might actually know somewhat who is right now the top of the league. And who at the bottom. Where people might actually know when the big finale of the season happens and what not.
These sports... primarily exist so that a few people can make money.
No, the issie is not soccer or baseball or even football (though that one is close), but the organisation behind it.
Being from Germany our big sports is soccer of course, and as such even without being interested in it much, I know way too much about all the corruption within the FIFA and how there is a good chance, that actually to some regards the winners are actually decided before the games and what not. Like, it is a fucking swamp.
But of course the FIFA, the UEFA and whatever other local soccer organizations make fucking millions or even billions with it. With the merchandising of the different clubs, with the entrance fees, with the airing rights and what not. And in that system, where a few people make millions with it... the actual players (at times still teenagers) get exploited, while the big organizations actually make a big win out of the entire tribalism. Because the tribalism means, that the fans of one club over the other will want to "support" their club through buying more merchandise and what not.
And... I am not super knowledgable about other sports and their organizations, outside from knowing how exploited the players are. But I do assume that the financing works quite similarly.
So, let us think about what to change about it.
Here is the thing: Sports is fun. Both watching it and doing it is fun. It is good for people, too. It builds a sense of community. Or can do that, at least. So, sports totally should exist. And it does not really sound like horrible, if we were to say "No more big league sports", because... If people are good at a sport and like doing it and other people like watching it. Why not?
But instead of making these fixed clubs and linking them to a city or what not (while the players are not even from that city)... That kinda sounds bullshit. It makes for tribalism and for this entire merchandising stuff, that makes the entire thing so unsustainable.
So... Just allow the players to form their own teams each season. New teams every season. Something like that.
And during those games... put player well-fare first. Sure, people might still get injured, but... Do not encourage it. Make sure that people are safer than they are right now.
I honestly do not know, how this might look in detail. But I am rather sure that the sports are not the problem, but the entire sector of few people getting rich over it, while explointing everyone else.

Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson being incredible
Sha’Carri Richardson’s amazing nails
Team USA women’s gymnastics team’s uniforms being covered in Swarovski crystals
Asher Hong wearing flags tucked over his ears as he watches the women’s gymnasts compete
The star hairclips in Qiu Qiyuan’s hair
Rebeca Andrade.
The Brazilian handball player Frossard who carried her Angolan rival Kassoma bridal-style when she was injured
The French people putting Leon Marchand’s name into the national anthem as they sing after he won gold, and Marchand turning his head to see them when he realizes what they’re doing
Imane Khelif facing bullshit transphobia as a cisgender woman and still going forward guaranteed a medal (I put she was intersex in here but she does not identify as intersex so I will respect that.)
The Palestinian Olympians competing for their people during active genocide
As a Parisian I was so ready to bitch on the Olympics but omfg these are the most entertaining games I have ever seen. So far we have:

go for the gold!! xiao chiye @ the olympics (hwtask14)
i have a couple options for chiye. if he had his memories, i'd put him in equestrian eventing, because that involves cross-country, jumping, and dressage. he would do really well at the first two (not as well at dressage), but he'd definitely medal. however, my chiye at present does not have his memories, so i absolutely can't throw him on a horse. his other potential physical advantages are that he's tall (he's 6'4''), his arm strength is fairly impressive, and he's a great communicator under pressure. so i think a team sport would be his best bet! especially because (according to his false memories) he did a lot of team sports growing up, so he has the practice being able to work with other people and coordinate their efforts. being on a rowing team would be a good option, though i think he needs a little bit more of a mental challenge than just the repetitive motion of rowing. basketball could also be a decent option, though speed itself is not his greatest strength; he could be the person the rest of the basketball team always tries to get the ball to in order to dunk it, but i think he'd get bored doing that too. rugby is also an alluring alternative but in the discord someone (june?) joked about him being on the handball team and i actually think that's most accurate, because handball really requires both mental tactics and physical strength in a way that chiye would enjoy. it's a contact sport! he'd love that! he'd want to be more on the offense than the defense but could handle doing both-- plus his height would really help. i'm going to estimate that chiye would help his team win at least a silver. in his current memory-less state he'd be on team usa, and so he'd wear whatever the team usa outfit is/use the team usa trading pin. he would make a lot of social media posts coordinated with his teammates, and if he was given control of the team account he'd end up getting them in a little bit of hot water with the teasing comments he might leave on other teams' posts or videos, though he wouldn't do anything troublesome enough to get them eliminated or fined. if he went viral for anything, it'd be for video footage of him executing some insane play that shouldn't have been possible, while also being stunningly handsome. people love a good-looking olympian and he would eat up the attention, actually. he would want to pay for his own, far more comfortable accommodation outside the olympic village, but if his team really wanted him in the village he'd end up staying there anyway. and he's the kind of person who would watch/cheer on the olympics at home only if he were out at a bar with friends; if he's home alone, he wouldn't bother watching.

Okay, first of all, equality would be this:
Because, frankly, if female nipples have to be covered, so do male.
But also, this was from 2021 ish? And the outfits for handball did change:
You can google “international handball federation rules” to find the pdf this came from. For some reason tumblr won’t let me add the link on mobile.
As for volleyball, here are the uniforms for the upcoming olympics:
Google “olympic volleyball uniform 2024” to find that pdf.
This is the most recent sports uniform controversy that I’m aware of: https://www.npr.org/2024/04/15/1244773342/nike-team-usa-women-uniform-revealing-olympics
It should be noted that Nike explained that these were merely “options” that the track and field team could choose and that there is a women’s outfit that includes more material than this (shorts), but I would still question the fact that Nike chose to initially showcase only the high rise wedgiewear as potentially sexist.
Are sports uniforms equal now? Nope. (Hey women’s gymnastics, have you improved at all in recent years? Somebody let me know, I’m at my research limit for the day) Are the protests and demands to change it working some? Yup. Keep getting pissed off. Stay pissed off. There are larger causes, but these “smaller” ones are all symptoms of the big ones. They’re worth fighting too. Give no quarter to these controlling ideas!
And while you’re pissed off about appearance based sexism, go look up some intersectional issues like Black women’s experiences with being told to wear their hair in “professional” ways. Or Muslim women wearing their hijab. These problems all still exist too. If we’re gonna be mad, let’s go for the full rage, yah? I basically exist on spite and chocolate these days anyway.

Week 3: The Male Gaze & Gender in Advertisements
How Sports Illustrated Presents Men VS Women
When you tune in to watch women’s sports, what do you see? Other than the phenomenal athleticism and fierce competition, there’s an undercurrent that often goes unspoken. The sexualization of female athletes through the lens of the "male gaze." This isn’t just about skimpy outfits, it’s about how women in sports are portrayed and perceived, subtly shaping our views and their experiences. The concept of the "male gaze" sprang from the realm of film theory, thanks to scholar Laura Mulvey. It refers to the way visual arts and literature depict the world and women from a masculine point of view, presenting women as objects of male pleasure. In sports, this perspective translates into how cameras linger on female athletes' bodies, how commentators discuss their appearances, and even how their uniforms are designed. More about aesthetic appeal than functionality.
So, how does this gaze appear in the world of sports? It’s in the slow-motion replays focusing on body parts rather than athletic action. It’s in the advertisements featuring female athletes in provocative poses unrelated to their sport. And yes, it’s often in their uniforms, designed to attract attention rather than optimize performance. For example, beach volleyball players have long been known for their bikini uniforms, which many argue are chosen for visual appeal rather than athletic necessity. Contrast this with male volleyball players who wear tank tops and shorts. The difference in coverage is stark and speaks volumes about the intended audience's gaze.
Men's Beach Volleyball Uniform VS Women's
A current example of this is the new Nike uniforms for Track and Field. These uniforms are supposed to represent team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, people were quick to notice the stark difference in the uniforms between the Men's and the Women's. The uniforms are being called "inappropriate" and "skimpy" (Li). Laura Fleshman, a former athlete calls the uniform "a costume born of patriarchal forces that are no longer welcome or needed to get eyes on women’s sports." She continues by saying, "If this outfit was truly beneficial to physical performance, men would wear it. This is not an elite athletic kit for track and field." Fleshman alludes to the uniform being crafted by "the male gaze" by saying the uniform would have looked different if they were designing it purely to benefit athletic performance.
Another example is from the German gymnastics team's protest customary at the 2021 European Gymnastics Championships, where they chose to compete in full-body suits. This move was extensively reported and applauded as a protest sexism in sports. The Norwegian beach handball team was also punished for competing in the European Championships in shorts rather than the compulsory bikini bottoms, highlighting the rigid and frequently sexualized clothing regulations placed on female athletes (Olympic Analysis).
The male gaze is not only prominent in crafting uniforms, but prevalent in female athletes advertisements. The sexualization seeps into media coverage and sponsorships. Female athletes are frequently asked about their personal lives and fashion choices, and even their roles as mothers (Bell). These questions are less commonly posed to their male counterparts. This type of coverage subtly shifts the focus from their skills and achievements to their roles in traditional gender stereotypes. Research highlights the impact of this skewed portrayal. Studies have shown that media coverage of women's sports is significantly sexualized compared to men's, affecting not only public perception but also the athletes own self-image and performance (Williams). Female athletes often feel pressured to conform to certain physical standards to secure sponsorships or media attention, which are crucial for their careers (Williams).
youtube
Example of gender role stereotypes and gender displays in advertisements. Danika Patrick, a professional race car driver, being presented in a sexual way for a Super Bowl commercial.
Throughout these challenges, there is a growing movement to develop and redefine women's sports. Advocates aiming at changing uniform regulations to focus on functionality and comfort are gaining ground. Also, there’s a push for more respectful and equal media coverage that focuses on the athletes' skills and achievements without unnecessary sexualization. Organizations and campaigns worldwide are calling for media reform, promoting hashtags like #CoverTheAthlete, which challenges media outlets to cover female athletes based on their performance rather than their appearances (Bell). These movements underscore a critical demand for change, advocating for a new way of viewing and valuing women in sports. one that respects their prowess and dedication.
The journey toward fairness in sports media and representation is ongoing. It calls for a collective effort to recognize and dismantle the ingrained patterns of the male gaze. As audiences, we can drive change by supporting media that respects and highlights female athletes for their talents and achievements. Let’s cheer for the incredible skills, the hard fought matches, and the unbelievable moments of true sportsmanship. Over everything, the true spirit of sports lies in celebration of human potential, not in the sexualization of athletes' bodies. So, the next time you watch a women’s sports event, take a moment to consider what you’re really seeing, and how you can be part of the change in how the world views women in sports.

Volleyball: A Dynamic and Fast-Paced Sport
Volleyball is a thrilling and dynamic sport that captivates both players and spectators with its fast-paced action and strategic gameplay. Played by millions of people worldwide, volleyball has evolved from a casual beach pastime to a highly competitive and organized sport. In this 800-word exploration, we will delve into the history, rules, techniques, and the global appeal of volleyball.
History of Volleyball:
Volleyball has a fascinating history that dates back to the late 19th century. It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Morgan aimed to create a new sport that combined elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball, allowing for a less strenuous activity suitable for older adults. Originally called "mintonette," the game underwent a name change to volleyball when a spectator observed the volleying nature of the play.
From its modest beginnings, volleyball quickly spread across the United States and then internationally, becoming an Olympic sport in 1964 for men and 1964 for women. The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), founded in 1947, governs international competitions and ensures standardization of rules and regulations.
Rules of Volleyball:
Volleyball is played on a rectangular court divided into two equal halves by a net. The objective is to score points by grounding the ball in the opponent's court. Each team consists of six players, and the game is played in sets, with the first team to reach 25 points winning the set. If the match extends to a fifth set, the winning team must reach 15 points.
Players rotate positions after winning the right to serve, and the team that wins a rally earns the right to serve next. Points are scored through a variety of actions, including spiking, blocking, and defensive plays. A team is allowed a maximum of three successive touches to return the ball over the net.
One of the unique aspects of volleyball is the libero, a specialized defensive player wearing a different color jersey. The libero is allowed to replace any back-row player without prior notice to the officials, enhancing a team's defensive capabilities.
Techniques and Strategies:
Volleyball is a game of skill, agility, and teamwork. Key techniques include spiking, blocking, serving, digging, and setting. A spike, often the highlight of a match, involves a player forcefully hitting the ball over the net, aiming to score a point. Timing, power, and precision are crucial for a successful spike.
Blocking is another essential aspect, with players forming a human wall at the net to deflect the opponent's spike. Skilled blockers use impeccable timing and read the opponent's intentions to disrupt their attack.
Serving is the initiation of each rally and comes in various forms, such as the float serve, jump serve, and topspin serve. A well-placed serve can put the receiving team on the defensive from the start.

Rip Baek, they wanna make you an American football stan 🤡 I never understood Super Bowl tbh, some performances aren't even good anyway
Lol you're saying the Mbappe x RM saga will finally end? If he plays and behaves well be my guest, but it's on sight Kylian!!!
It's always sad seeing top players struggle in the NTs, because they're doing all the work. The disproportion is really big. I can't blame other players since a lot of them don't play in CL clubs, but it's so embarrassing sometimes 😭
So brother Baek could've been a cricket star?! Omg damn that injury sounds nasty though. I don't know shit about cricket actually. Tbf my wrist was already twisted because of another evil team ball sport called HANDBALL. My spaghetti arms couldn't take it lolol, I'm decent at basketball though! I did break two of my fingers while playing, but 😅
Pique thinks he's a spy or a detective trying to "expose" RM every 4 months, let it go... I can't believe Shakira got with him, girl??? I had to show some of the best football moments to my ignorant USA friend and I ofc sent her the Zidane headbutt and Suarez biting, culture <3
It happens every year so I don't think Salah cares? Good for him, but on the other hand I'd just stop posting at this point, cause the comments are getting worse and worse
Harry Kane being a disappointment isn't anything new lmao. Believe it or not, but I unfortunately have some Spurs fans among my friends and they're often mad at him
Omg, yeah see suddenly everyone knows everyone. Bestie I don't go to weddings, but I probably heard the songs you've mentioned, got me all curious 👀 Riverdale was filmed near you?! I'm so sorry, that's so bad 😩
Is the Yunho fic hot & cold too then? How's it going?
Hwa is a mystery, because no way he wouldn't be able to take Hongjoong down. Sometimes he does this though, soooo 🤔 runner Hwa AU... I'm manifesting
I hope Hwa will be able to attend EXO's concert 🤞🏻 I wouldn't mind a free ticket either, heh. Uhmmm wow, Neymar Jeongin stan... I better not see him at EXO World though

out lgbtq+ olympians!
this is my third attempt at this post. I am using the list compiled by outsports here. i highly encourage you to click through and read about each of these athletes.
below the cut is the list of the 182* out lgbtq+ athletes at the tokyo games. from the outsports list i have added some scheduling information -- if they've already competed, how they did, and if they are still competing/are yet to compete, when you can catch them. all times are US central daylight, because that's where I live.

IOC gives athletes more scope for protest at Tokyo Olympics. An Excerpt of the article reads “The latest guidance appears to let athletes copy the iconic Black Power raised fist gestures of American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. However, they should be allowed in Tokyo only "prior to the start of the competition" and not on the podium at medal ceremonies as Smith and Carlos did. The American 200-meter medalists were expelled from the Olympics. Gestures will now be allowed in Tokyo by athletes "after leaving the 'call room' (or similar area) or during the introduction of the individual athlete or team," the IOC said. This should include at the starting blocks or starting line. Athletes still face disciplinary action if their gesture is "targeted, directly or indirectly, against people, countries, organizations," or is disruptive, the IOC said. Disruption could include disturbing an opponent's concentration or preparation, by unfurling a banner or a gesture during a national anthem.” End excerpt.
