This Week in BL
April 2021 Part 4
it’s my birthday week! *raises a glass of pink milk*
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
Second Chance Ep 4 - oh noes my babies are all so sad! Teen angst for the win. Tropes included: crying in shower, a very significant hand hold, & striped shirts. (At this point over half the cast has been in stripes.)
Love Machine Ep 1 - not gonna lie, I barely made it through the first half, this is a short run LOW budget experimental web series and it’s not good. Dropped.
Lovely Writer Ep 9 - I like it when LW gets serious because there are fewer dumb sound effects, but oof Aey, poor baby. How many Aeys have I known over the years? Rejected, broken, angry, lonely, and lashing out. On a different note, I haven’t see the “sex drug made us do it” plot device since 1980s Johanna Lindsey. Props to that cocktail rearing its ugly head. (yeh yeh) ZOMBIE TROPE ALERT. (Is this the point where I remind the world at a-play doesn’t have to hurt? Well, it doesn’t! Toys, prep, and lube people. Sheesh.) Anygay, zombie trope is put safely back underground. Please don’t let it rise again? (I KNOW, I’ll stop now.) So this was a rough episode, especially the back end. (Okay now I’ll REALLY stop.)  Seriously tho, BL doesn’t do a massive coming out family drama scene often. I liked LW’s handling of this one. Hard to watch but compelling.
Close Friend Ep 1 (OhmFluke) - very cute snapshot into a LTR featuring an overworked music producer and his student BF. That’s the chassis for this whole series, each one has to do with the song & is a portrayal of that song’s message. Essentially, the theme of this one was remembering to make time for your partner. I enjoyed that. OhmFluke gave us easy casual familiar affection and a kiss, but no BL tropes, just romance.
Tumblr media
Fish Upon The Sky Ep 3 - Pi is a total spazz & the ghost story bit was... well, it was something wasn’t it? Lots of tropes: fixing his clothes, wound tending, drag baby around, piggyback, head in lap, hand hold, and ending on a drunk kiss. I just noticed Pi uses guu/mueng with Mork, but Mork’s a year older. (So I have a new entry onto the linguistic brats list.)  So rude and presumptuous. Also I gotta say this, don’t wear watches when you’re working on a cadaver, mmky boys?
Y-Destiny Ep 4 - look MaxNat have great chemistry, this ep had loads of great tropes (e.g. cheek kiss, rooftop, public claiming via phone), it’s not their fault I’m just not wild about these characters. I do like Nuea’s wanna-be idol wardrobe though. And Sun is sporting the red bag version of Tharn’s black bag that I wanted so bad in TT2. (I wonder if I can score a knock off when I’m over there?) Regardless, I basically grinned all the way through this installment, so that’s another thumbs up from me for Y-Destiny. Who knew I’d come around? Man would I love to see these two get their own series.
Brothers Ep 12 - teacher/student exposed! But the power of boys on phones will overcome all. No KhunKaow for me, so of course I found this ep tragically disappointing.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 6 - MuRen is officially a yaoi manga character in the flesh. H4′s outright mockery/subversion of tropes “don’t touch him he’s mine,” + “touch my lip & think of kissing” makes the fact that other (way more damaging) tropes are being blithely utilized without critique almost - dare i say it? - insulting. YongJie is trash but I’m the one who feels like trash because I want to forgive him. How aptly abusive & dysfunctional we all are. I don’t know whether to applaud H4 or start drinking. (Maybe this is the show I should invent a cocktail for? Who am I kidding? This is totally a jello shots show.)
Friend or Lover (Taiwan) Ep 2 - I thought this was only a microfilm but turns out it’s a web series. It’s cute. I’m enjoying it.
My Lascivious Boss (Vietnam) Ep 3 - subs take a while to drop but it’s still better than average. I like a secret identity trope, I love a grumpy/sunshine pairing, and the side couple is great but this ep was slow. With only 6 total (I assume) they better get the main couple together next ep or the improved quality of this series will be sacrificed on the alter of pacing issues.
Word of Honor (China) Ep 28-30 - slowed down to focus on bad guys (yawn...ooo Scorpion...yawn again). Then baby gets kidnapped, other baby goes crazy, and old friends turn up. We end on DOOM because mathematically this was an episode 11. All boxes checked.
Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (Korea) Ep 3-4 - how is this show SO DAMN CUTE & weirdly wholesome at the same time? Another one of those: Will Korea resolve this satisfactorily in 4 short eps? But I seem to say that half way through every Korean BL. These days, I have complete faith. Warm fuzzies for everyone.
Tumblr media
Stand Alones
Color Rush movie is the same as the series. There is a stinger at the VERY end (untranslated) but which I’m assuming has something to do with the missing mother. Is this a possible indication of a 2nd season? Hopefully someone will eng sub the stinger and post it out into the universe. So yeah, Color Rush movie = To My Star style, sadly, not Wish You. That said, I did enjoy watching with different subs. The first version I watched was fan subbed, and they were better on English colloquialisms. Viki’s subs are better on Korean colloquialisms.
Tumblr media
Breaking News
Bunch of new press on Thailand’s I Told the Sunset About You 2 AKA I Promised You the Moon. Here’s a master post on the subject with all the links you could ever want. It will start airing May 27th 8 pm (Thai time) on LINETV.
New Thai Bl Golden Blood got a teaser trailer. Stars familiar side dish Gun Napat (Techno from LBC) as a rich kid who needs a bodyguard. Yeah, it looks to be the Thai version of Where Your Eyes Linger which is FINE. I love me a bodyguard romance. DO EETTT Thailand. Trailer contains ALL the tropes: dry his hair, piggyback, cooking together, and more, plus good smooches. It looks GREAT. Also cheeper to make then KinPorsche and it might get funded due to of residual enthusiasm. Also GOOD TITLE.
Close Friend got another teaser trailer this one for Talay & Yoon (no subs).
Taiwan has a new BL coming out... eventually. Looks to be a new franchise like the HIStory series with different couple(s) each season. It’s the first Taiwanese BL from a major in-country network. The first installment is titled Be Loved in House: I Do (seriously Taiwan, could we talk about your titles?). It stars a familiar face, Aaron Lai from HIStory: My Hero. It’s a grumpy/tsundere boss/employee office-set BL with some forced proximity to push them together. (Nods to Japan.) No release date, but (unlike Thailand) Taiwan usually doesn’t make announcements without content & serious intent.
Tumblr media
Gossip
Taiwanese BL NOVEL Miracle dropped a trailer, no subs or translation. According to YouTube comments it was supposed to be part of HIStory3 but MODC took on its slot. Still it’s kinda fun to see what might have been.
Next Week Looks Like This:

Some shows may be listed later than actual air date for International accessibility reasons.

List of Paramount Animation movies (2012-2022)
Paramount Animation’s 10th movie, “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” just got released in theaters today. Here’s how far the company has come since the formation of Paramount’s animation branch following the success of Nickelodeon Movies’ “Rango” back in 2011.
RELEASED
1.) “The Little Prince” [PG]
Theatrical Release - July 29, 2015 (France, theatrical)/August 5, 2016 (USA, on Netflix only)
(NOTE: Paramount Animation's first movie. It was planned for a theatrical US release, until it was better suited for Netflix.)
2.) “Anomalisa” [R]
Theatrical Release - December 30, 2015
(NOTE: Paramount Animation's first movie released in the US. It's also their first R-rated feature, and their first live action hybrid movie.)
3.) “Monster Trucks” [PG]
Theatrical Release - January 13, 2017
(NOTE: Paramount Animation's first movie with Nickelodeon Movies.)
4.) “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: The Movie” [PG]
Theatrical Short - “Hanazuki Full of Treasures (2017 Short)”
Theatrical Release - October 6, 2017
(NOTE: Paramount Animation's first animated movie based on a TV show. Paramount holds the rights to this movie in the US, while Universal Pictures owns the international movie rights. This is the first animated film to do so since Nickelodeon Movies’ 2003 film, “Charlotte’s Web 2: Wilbur’s Great Adventure”.)
5.) “Wonder Park” [PG]
Theatrical Release - March 15, 2019
(NOTE: Paramount Animation's first animated movie with Nickelodeon Movies. The TV series, "Adventures in Wonder Park" has yet to be announced for Nickelodeon and Paramount+.)

7.) “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic 2: A New Generation” [PG]
Theatrical/Digital Release - September 24, 2021
(NOTE: Paramount Animation's first animated sequel film, and their first theatrical film released during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike the first movie, which received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, the sequel received positive reviews and was proven successful at the box office and in digital rentals. The MLP G5 TV series based on said sequel film has yet to be announced for Paramount+ and Netflix, who hold the G5 series’ international rights.)
8.) “Rumble” [PG]
Theatrical/Digital Release - December 15, 2021
(NOTE: Was planned to be in theaters and on CBS All Access July 31, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film had to be delayed until February 2022, until it was later decided to be released in theaters and on Paramount+ December 15, 2021 to avoid competition with Marvel Studios and Sony's "Spider-Man 3: No Way Home", released two days after. The first trailer for "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" was shown in theaters before the movie started.)
9.) “Sonic the Hedgehog 2″ [PG]
Theatrical/Digital Release - April 8, 2022

This Week In BL
Feb 2021 Part 1
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series Thai
Manner of Death Ep 11 - a nice beefcake twist, then another twist, plus proud gay dads. We are mighty pleased.
Cupid Coach Ep 4 - Unbearably boring. I’m out. We are not amused.
My Bromance Ep 9 - FINALE I watched it unsubbed (I’ve NOT been following since ep 3) and it looks like it has a nice cute happy ending. I’m now interested in binging it once good subs become available.
1000 Stars Ep 2 - was a lot better than Ep 1, the mains have okay chemistry, the kids are serviceable (child actors, shudder), but I’m really loving all the side characters. We are cautiously optimistic.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series Not Thai
You Are Ma Boy Ep 5 (Vietnam) - pacing still good, cuties are still giving it their all, solid little series with bumpy side couples, confession call & response continues apace.
To My Star Ep 7-9 FINALE (Korea) - quirky as all goddamn getup, but so fucking cinnamon roll tasty. Charming end. Recommended so long as you realize we are in Mr Heart style K-BL. (Also @coldties posted a killer MV for this one.) This one will get a movie rerelease like Wish You, hopefully also on Netflix.
We Best Love: No. 1 For You Ep 6 FINALE (Taiwan) - we got to see boyfriends being domestic af adorable with an ending that was a touch bittersweet but very college appropriate. With season 2 coming March 5 I am disposed to be VERY PLEASED.
What will we do with ourselves and nothing new out of Korea or Taiwan for two WHOLE weeks?
Tumblr media
Stand Alone
I rewatched Wish You (2020 Korean series WISH YOU: Your Melody From My Heart now retitled - thank fuck - and available as a movie on Netflix). I have to say Yoon Sang Yi delivers some excellent pining. I’m not a huge insta-love person and there’s some character dev flaws, but it holds up really well and delivers more as a movie then it did as a series.
One of my favorite catches on the rewatch was the way Yoon Sang Yi’s jacket sleeves are always too long. It’s such a perfect little character trait. He is so shy and careful that he shrugs smaller into his coat, and also he hides his hands - when, as a pianist, his hands represent his self actualization and art. He only exposes them when making music... or holding Kang In Soo‘s hand.
Incidentally, I was moved to look these two up... both out of K-pop. (This is my shocked face.)
Tumblr media
Breaking News
Lovey Writer dropped its official trailer at last, looking good and trope-filed. It’s set to start Feb 24th.
Top Secret Together dropped its first promo material (Thai, no eng subs). I’m excited about this one, it’s being lead out by an IRL couple.
Tumblr media
My Engineer 2
The ME boys dropped an adorable gossip heavy promo vid. ME 2 is finishing up the script and will probably begin filming in April. It’s supposed to still release in 2021 (which makes me worry about post and explains a lot about some of Thai BL’s audio quality issues). With April filming, my guess is for an October (but more likely November) release.
Close Friend
Lay talked about his Close Friend project, which is a MV series from BOX Music featuring musically-inclined actors with established BL pairings so:
KimCop (MarkKit from Gen Y)
JimmyTommy (SaifahZon from Why R U)
JaFirst (LeoFiat from TharnType 2)
YoonLay (NottPun from YYY)
Y-Destiny
Perth talked about Y-Destiny (previous title Destiny) which presumably is already filmed because he said it will be on air at the beginning of this year. As this is a Cheewin project, expect it to be something odd, campy, and frenetic in the YYY style. My guess is they’ll wait until You Only Eat Alone has completed its run before airing Y-Destiny, because who can take more than one Cheewin at a time? No one. Not even Thailand.
Tumblr media
KinnPorsche
Perth also talked about KinnPorsche. He said it would be on air... but that he wasn’t allowed to say the date, so we can hope this means they finally got distribution. (The excitement over the trailer probably helped - it has over a million views.) He also said they would start filming soon (so Feb/March) which means, if everything goes smoothly, a late summer release at the earliest. However, with an independent studio, high production values, big cast, and fight sequences I would expect KP to have more post than most BLs, so my guess is it will air towards the end of the year. (And I would be scared for quality if they tried for any earlier.)
KinnPorsche cast also continues to work the BL talk show circuit, they made an appearance on Sosat Seoul Say. Mile & Apo are adorable + good chemistry, in fact the whole cast is adorable with good chemistry, so I’m excited for this series.
Tumblr media
Gossip
Cutest beans, Sam & Yu of We Best Love, have been dropping the most charming little lives ever. I’m so pleased we are getting a second season out of them. I can’t remember the title because, ya know, Taiwanese titles are beyond bonkers. But season 2 is listed now.
Hong Kong is reported to be filming its first BL Series (15 eps to air on VIUTV). It will be an adaptation of 2018 Japanese BL drama Ossan’s Love (maybe same title?). Like Cherry Magic this is an office romcom: 30s single man who isn't popular with women lives with his parents. When they kick him out, he moves in with a coworker. Turns out this guy has a crush on him, as does another dude from his office. Foundational tropes: Office romance meets forced proximity meets love triangle. I expect the style out of Hong Kong to be somewhat similar to Taiwan, however they are politically less independent of China Main (although culturally VERY different) so this series could be DOA (for gay) or get killed early in its run (see Addicted web series - or don’t see it, if you’re in China). Also, like the Japanese original (and unlike most Taiwanese stuff), expect VERY low heat. That said, 15 eps is nothing to sneeze at, even if they are only 15-20 min each. So I guess I am... intrigued?
Next Week Looks Like This:
Tumblr media
February Update: Others that are airing but I’m not following:
Fools (Vietnamese) - I don’t think it’s going to end happily (it’s from the Stage of Love peeps), so I’m waiting to binge if it does
Brothers (Thai) - deals with taboo relationships from the Thank God it’s Friday people (this will not end well)
Happenstance (Pinoy) - I don’t follow Pinoy BL closely
One Day Pag-ibig (Pinoy) - ibid
Love or Lie (Pinoy) - ibid
The Alter (Pinoy) - ibid
Tumblr media
Upcoming 2021 BL master post here.
Links to watch are provided when possible, ask in a comment if I missed something.

FEATURE: Status Update — What Happened to Anime Affected by COVID-19?
Tumblr media
Since the initial announcement that projects would be put on a hiatus due to COVID-19, the anime industry has adjusted its processes looking into remote work options and creating an environment where work can safely continue in order to move forward. Due to updated work models, the industry has been getting back on track. Not only has the anime industry in Japan adjusted to a new workflow, but so has the anime English dubbing industry, which has adapted to remote recordings. While working under these new guidelines, both productions and dubs have slowly started back up and have been able to continue their broadcasts, as well as releasing exciting news regarding the continuation of everyone's favorite series.
  UPCOMING TITLES
The Promised Neverland left fans at the edge of their seat when the first season wrapped back in March of 2019. Fans were eagerly looking forward to the next chapter, but due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, the second season of the hit series saw its original release date postponed from spooky October 2020 to January 2021. There were also plans to rebroadcast the first season in July, but in April there was an announcement the rebroadcast would be postponed to October 2020. Despite the delay, the second season has moved forward, releasing a new teaser trailer for the upcoming season which featured the opening theme song "Identity," by Kiro Akiyama. In an official Twitter post from December 17, fans received the news that "Magic," by Myuk would be the season's ending theme, with Eve contributing to the music. The highly anticipated second season will officially premiere Thursday, January 7.

October 2020 would have also seen the return of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, but the second season's broadcast would be pushed from October to January 2021. The second season is set to debut on January 12, 2021. With production continuing and the next season coming soon, a series of events have been planned to get fans ready for the premiere of Season 2. It was announced Stereo Dive Foundation will be behind the season's ending theme, and Episodes 1- 8 of Season 1 will air for free on a variety of YouTube channels for two weeks starting December 18. A special online pre-screening featuring members of the cast would also be held on December 26.

Moon Prism Power Make-Up! January 8, 2021, will see the release of the first Sailor Moon Eternal film, while the second film is set to hit Japanese theaters on February 11 of that year. Despite the films' delay, promotion for Sailor Moon was able to continue, safely of course! On June 30, in commemoration of Usagi's birthday, fans were treated to a special 25th-anniversary video featuring an array of collaborations, collections, and stunningly vibrant complete editions of Naoko Takeuchi's beloved work. Fans were kept updated on the various casting announcements for the Amazon Trio and Quartet. More recently, a series of new trailers featuring our dynamic duo Usagi and Mamoru, the sailor soldiers, and Chibiusa, was released and a Sailor Moon TV special premiered in Japan. For the special, fans could vote in a series of categories that included their favorite characters and episodes. The broadcast also included a great lineup of guests and was a fun, interactive experience fans could participate in from the comfort of their homes.

    RELEASED TITLES
It's not uncommon for an anime series to go on hiatus, and while anime fans have seen some of their favorite series delayed, that fate wasn't necessarily the case for long-running series like Pokémon and One Piece. Both of these properties have been on the air since the late '90s and in their 20-ish years gracing the television (or computer) screens of anime fans, both series had rarely experienced a hiatus. But due to the pandemic, both series found themselves on a break. On April 20, the official Twitter account for Toei Animation announced future episodes of the most recent arc, One Piece: WANO KUNI, would be delayed after they "carefully considered the safety measures for the spread," of COVID-19. The series would continue its broadcast starting June 28, and more recently, would even get its own 24/7 channel dedicated to catching up on all the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates.
youtube
The virus also impacted Pokémon Journeys, Pokémon: Twilight Wings, and the upcoming film, Pokémon the Movie: Coco. After it was announced on April 19 that Pokémon Journeys would be going on hiatus and suspending production, the series would continue its Japanese broadcast on June 7, and would also become available on Netflix starting June 12. Likewise, Pokémon: Twilight Wings would delay its fifth episode to June 5, and the fan-favorite web anime series would return again in November with a special episode! Like Pokémon Journeys and Pokémon: Twilight Wings, Pokémon the Movie: Coco was delayed and the original release date of July 10, 2020, would be pushed back. The film would set a new release date for this upcoming winter. Pokémon Journeys' hiatus resulted in the longest amount of time the series didn't air on Japanese television since the Porygon episode of 1997, and Pokémon the Movie: Coco marks the first Pokémon film to not have a July release date for Japanese theaters since 1998.
youtube
After the production committee for Violet Evergarden: the Movie announced in a post on the official website the film was being postponed, the film was released in Japanese theaters a few months later on September 18, 2020, and became available in New Zealand and Australia on December 3. Since the premiere, Violet Evergarden: the Movie has achieved many accomplishments. The film's already stunning animation was amplified because of a conversion to Dolby Vision HDR and became the first anime movie to be screened this way. In addition to receiving a special screening of this type, Violet Evergarden: the Movie has also continued to perform at the box office. On December 7, Oricon reported the film surpassed 2 billion yen, (US $19,315,670), an impressive milestone. This achievement is likely to grow, seeing as the film expanded to additional theaters starting on December 11.
youtube
Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld second cour was set to premiere on April 25, 2020, but an announcement from the series official website confirmed the premiere would be delayed. A new launch date of July 11 was declared and a rebroadcast of the show's first season aired in its place. With the Japanese broadcast of Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld being delayed, the series also saw the delay of its English dub, but on November 7, the English dub would return, and a new trailer previewed just what fans can expect when SAO comes home to Cartoon Network's Toonami block.

  RELEASED DUBS
With studios looking into ways to continue dubbing anime safely, fans were able to pick up right where they left off on a great slate of dubs including In/Spectre, Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It, Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun, Somali and the Forest Spirit, The 8th son? Are you kidding me? starting in May 2020. Also in May 2020, a full line-up of new dubs was released which included Tower of God and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

COVID Business Landscape: Part V
By Tom Michael
As we wrap up our look into what changes the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the coin business, we want to thank everyone who participated, sharing their insights and adaptations so that we might share them with our readers. We hope this mini-series has provided a breath of fresh air to all who have read it, while reminding everyone of the resilience and resourcefulness endemic in our shared hobby and industry.
In this last installment, we bring you news from three of the largest producers of gold and silver commemorative and bullion coins in the world, plus an inside look at the workings of two creative coin originators who continue to push the traditional boundaries of modern collectible coinage.
Refinery employee Phillip Downer stamps a 1,000-ounce silver bar at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa. Downer has worked throughout the pandemic as the RCM re-prioritized operations to focus on bullion in support of the mining industry and financial sector. (Image courtesy Royal Canadian Mint.)
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is a central supplier to the world’s gold and silver bullion markets, so it was with trepidation that I read a press release on March 20 announcing a planned, two-week shut-down of the RCM facilities. The plan was to create a divided workforce approach for the safety of the RCM staff and to allow for critical services to be maintained, while still supplying large cast bar products for institutional trading.
Alex Reeves, senior manager, public affairs at the RCM, recently provided us with more detail on their successful changes.
“We did suspend minting operations in Ottawa and Winnipeg, from March 20 to April 6, to allow us to reconfigure shifts and implement protocols allowing employees to maintain critical services in a safe environment. We have now resumed the minting of Canadian and foreign circulation coins in Winnipeg, while Ottawa is focused on the production of 1-ounce gold and silver Maple Leaf bullion coins. Numismatic coin production remains suspended as we continue to prioritize our manufacturing operations.”
Given the current health and economic circumstances, I think the RCM made the right choices for the most stability.
Reeves expanded on the bullion support: “We have also modified our operations so that we could concentrate on supporting the essential mining and financial sectors. This means we have continued to operate our refinery to allow for the receipt and withdrawal of available products without interruption. This also provides liquidity to refinery and pool customers with large cast bar products. This includes supplying 100-ounce Good Delivery List gold bars on a limited basis, which are the standard institutional trading bar for COMEX.”
Being a huge operation, the RCM has many concerns in the area of support services.
Reeves reiterated, “The Mint has also maintained uninterrupted support services thanks to hundreds of employees who continue to work from home. This includes seamless management of Canada’s coin distribution system.”
As we have mentioned in earlier installments, distribution and shipping have presented many coin businesses with challenges, so it is reassuring that the RCM remains strong in this area.
In the midst of all these financial concerns Reeves assures us that, “Our people have remained healthy throughout this public health emergency.”
With so many important priorities to consider, it is great to hear that the RCM, like so many other coin businesses, have placed the safety of their staff at the forefront.
Regarding the RCM new coin schedule for 2020, some changes and shifts will certainly be required.
Reeves could tell us only this: “While we never disclose details of numismatic coins prior to their launch, I can tell you that we have had to reschedule several 2020 products. Our product development, engineering and engraving teams are continuing to work on many new products for next year.”
Sounds like this gives collectors a great deal to look forward to in 2021!
We were happy to also hear from Reeves that the RCM staff initiated an extraordinary effort to help their local health care workers.
More than 1,893 medical face shields were produced through mid-May at the Royal Canadian Mint’s Ottawa facility for use by local health care workers. Here we see production employee Ka Yuen assembling face shields. (Image courtesy Royal Canadian Mint.)
“Some of our employees freed up a little capacity and spare resources to produce hand sanitizer and face shields to give back to local health care workers in Ottawa and Winnipeg. So far in Ottawa, the Mint has delivered 1,893 face shields to the Ottawa Hospital and the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de l’Outaouais (on the Quebec side of the National Capital Region) as well as 2,028 liters of hand sanitizer. Winnipeg has delivered 300 liters to the Manitoba Government, with more on the way.”
Brad Everton, senior manager of applied research in Winnipeg, hands over a batch of Mint-manufactured hand sanitizer to Geoff Enns of the Manitoba Government. (Image courtesy Royal Canadian Mint.)
It is a shining example of the thoughtful integration of coin businesses and their peripheral populations. We are very proud of the RCM’s proactive approach to so many concerns both in the trade and in their communities.
Halfway across the globe, a China Gold Coin Inc. representative brought us up to date on developments in their expansive gold commemorative and bullion issues programs.
“Since the social distancing did affect face-to-face communication and events such as salons and forums, we have turned most of the events and daily work online, and promoted sales through video conferences, webcast, the online shop, etc., to mitigate the influences of the pandemic as much as possible.”
The use of video conferencing and many forms of web-based communication has been a thread of similarity crossing through all coin businesses we have talked with around the world. This is a strong step forward from which I do not think we will recede. The way we conduct and enjoy our coin businesses and hobbies has changed for the better and likely will not go back in too many ways.
We were pleased to hear from China Gold Coin Inc. that their staff has remained healthy.
“We conducted strict preventive measures, so by now, no cases have been found in our staff.”
As with many other production facilities, they have also made some adjustments.
“We’ve been conducting flexible and remote working to maintain our basic functions, such as planning, designing, marketing and publicity. But our mint facilities did suspend production for a month in February to ensure the staff’s safety and health.”
Internationally, collectors and distributors are certainly concerned about the ultra-popular Panda bullion program.
China Gold Coin Inc. assures us that “The production of Panda bullions has been operating normally.”
In fact, they were able to tell us that “Panda gold coins generated higher sales volume on a year-on-year basis during the outbreak of COVID-19.”
This is exactly what we would expect to hear during a time of great financial concern for people at almost all economic levels, and it matched up very closely with experiences at other mints around the world.
Hasse Wiersma of NumisCollect is a very creative guy in both his cooking and his coins. We had a great conversation in Berlin at the World Money Fair in early February and he showed me, among other coins, the new Tree of Life, first in the Dot Art & Pointillism series. Wiersma created the design for this coin and worked with the folks at CIT to develop it using Smartminting Technology.
Pointillist pioneers Georges Seurat and Paul Signac would surely be pleased that their neo-impressionism movement has made it to such a popular medium as coinage. The coin was created for Palau and is dated 2020. It’s 65 mm in diameter and contains three ounces of silver. Limited to 333 pieces and struck using a black proof base, this would have been one of the first low-mintage, highly creative coins produced and distributed during the early days of the pandemic. Consider it a testament to the persistence of this new brand of coin creators, development firms and contract mints, like NumisCollect, CIT and Mayer Mint.
As with every other coin business, NumisCollect had hurdles to overcome during the pandemic. Wiersma pointed out the challenges.
“The biggest change is in coin shows and trade fairs. They are simply cancelled, which means less networking and catching up with clients and partners. Much more is done digital now, which does work but it’s important to see clients and partners on these occasions. Inside the company, not much changed except that all have to keep a 1.5 meter distance. Everything runs normally, but we just have to keep an eye on not getting too close to each other.”
As is the case with many coin folks, Wiersma enjoyed the travel.
“Combining leisure travel with business travel (bleisure travel) was a great way to explore the world.”
But worldwide travel restrictions are hampering these perks for the time being.
Even with their business remaining fully operational throughout the pandemic, NumisCollect has been able to protect their staff and everyone has remained healthy. Working in an office environment with space has made this easier. Because of this, Wiersma has kept programs on track and the NumisCollect business remains strong.
“We only do exclusive coin programs and no bullion. We will not change any of our programs and upcoming issues. The only thing we did do is rearrange the timeframe of some issues. Some August issues will issue in June and the other way around. This was mainly done on request of (bigger) customers for certain projects due to coronavirus. In general there has been a much higher demand for exclusive, high-end quality collector coins. In crisis or in best times, they always sell.”
Those larger businesses dealing with production facilities for new coins have had more daunting challenges. At The Perth Mint in Western Australia, International Wholesale Manager Neil Vance gave us the details of how one of the largest bullion and commemorative coin manufacturers in the world has adjusted during this period of pandemic production.
“In an effort to keep our people safe at The Perth Mint, we have more than 90 percent of our non-production workforce now working remotely,” said Vance. “This was a relatively steady but swift shift to adhere to social isolation guidelines and to limit the number of staff taking public transport, which also allowed for more of our production team to have access to on-site and nearby parking. In addition, our two production hubs, being our refinery and coining facilities, have staff working two distinct shifts to minimize contact between both individuals and teams.”
Vance went on to say that, “Throughout COVID-19, our refining, coin manufacturing, customer service and administrative operations have been business as usual.”
From a personnel standpoint, Vance was pleased to report that “there have been no confirmed COVID-19 cases among Perth Mint staff or their families.”
Some small concessions had to be made in the Perth Mint’s on-site public services.
“We have closed our gold exhibition and regular in-store retail trade with only bullion buying and selling offered by appointment,” Vance explained. “We have simply adjusted the way in which we operate to abide by social distancing protocols and health guidelines, yet with minimum disruption.”
Closing these tourism and retail functions was a necessity during the pandemic, but staffing adjustments were made to keep folks employed.
“With visitors no longer on-site, staff from this area were able to be reassigned to other teams to help facilitate orders from the surge in demand for our products,” said Vance. “In addition, we also implemented more regular cleaning and disinfecting across both sites, and offered additional support services to all staff.”
We were happy to hear of such efforts at the Perth Mint to keep staff healthy and employed during the pandemic. It is truly the sign of a dedicated business.
As Vance mentioned, there has been a surge in demand, particularly for investment products. We have heard the same from every coin business specializing in bullion coin creation or sales. Tough financial times always lead to healthy sales of gold and silver investment coins.
Sales have been good for The Perth Mint’s 2020 Kangaroo bullion coins. Shown here are the traditional four weights: 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce, plus a 1-kilo strike featuring the well-known Red Kangaroo. (Image courtesy The Perth Mint.)
Vance detailed the Perth Mint experience: “Due to COVID-19 and the ensuing economic issues and market uncertainty, we have experienced a dramatic increase in sales of our bullion products. To satisfy this heightened demand, we have focused our capacity on the production of our popular 1-ounce gold and 1-ounce silver Australian Kangaroo bullion coins. In addition, we continue to release our numismatic programs each month, and we are already planning for the release of our 2021 bullion coin program later in the year.”
Planning ahead, adjusting to environmental and social changes, creatively adapting to market shifts – these are the realities with which numismatic businesses are always coping. Folks involved in the coin market have traditionally been very adept at rolling with these punches and keeping ahead of the curves as they foresee them. The pandemic is throwing some sharp punches, but coin people have been quick and careful in their responses, as these articles have shown, keeping us all ahead of the curves and on track to continue building our numismatic presence in the world.
If I were asked to choose a single person who best exemplifies that up-beat attitude of the numismatic community, it would be my pleasure to point to Antonello Galletta, founder of Power Coin. Like so many numismatic creators, Galletta has some very strong ideas of what he wants to produce for collectors and he has followed those ideas through to completion with the help of many partners. Once Galletta has solidified his idea, he works with some great designers, experienced program planners and advanced technicians in our business to bring coins to market. It’s a great testament to our industry that all of these folks are willing to work together and tackle the myriad of challenges Galletta’s ideas present, and the results are often spectacular.
Based in Italy, Power Coin had to be very careful as the pandemic spread.
“Obviously we complied with all safety regulations and government recommendations, such as: keep the minimum distance, wear masks and sanitize the environment every day,” explained Galletta. “In addition, each employee became responsible for his or her own desk by thoroughly cleaning with alcohol-based detergents keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc.”
As for the working from home option Galletta explained that “every employee was given the opportunity to stay at home and continue working in smartworking. Everybody chose to keep coming to the office, but in any case we always had “Plan B” ready in case our government had further tightened the restrictions imposing the total closure of online activities too. Every employee has his own laptop and knows perfectly how to use the tools that make it easier to work remotely and how to cooperate via email, chat and video conferencing systems when necessary. So, we were (and are) also ready to work from home without a drop in productivity.”
Power Coin has kept all of their staff employed.
“Not a single day of layoff has been used by our company,” said Galletta.
The concern for employee health is strong at Power Coin, too, and Galletta relayed that, “Our staff remained healthy and fortunately also their families were not directly affected by the disease.”
Best of all, in a heavily restricted pandemic country, Power Coin folks enjoyed some appreciated freedom.
“Being able to come to work has also improved our private life, not being forced to stay at home 24/7,” he said.
Of course, outside supplier problems are something we have seen in most parts of the world and these delays have affected some of Power Coins planning.
“We had a delay on the production of the coin cases in China for our well-known ‘Micropuzzle Starry Night’ coin, with a delay on the scheduled delivery of about four to five weeks,” said Galletta. “In addition, some projects were delayed by one to two weeks at the mint that produces the coins for us. Not a big deal.”
Similar problems with shipping were also experienced and overcome.
“As a worldwide shipping company, we receive daily updates from our shipping partners on countries, regions or locations where we cannot deliver the goods,” he explained. “In any case, having relationships with dozens of couriers and postal operators, we have always found a solution to have the delivery at our customers’ door, one way or another.”
With sales building year over year, Power Coin is optimistic about the future. While the desire for normalcy and the strength derived from positive thinking reside in all of us, Galletta expressed it best: “We hope to return to normal life soon; people and companies need it. We always think positive, and in Italy we say, ‘What doesn’t kill you, strengthens you!’”

8 Virtual SEO Conferences for B2B Marketers
It’s the beginning of our second week of social distancing here in Minnesota. I’ve already cleaned my house no fewer than 10 times, cleaned and organized closets, and gone on approximately 100 walks. I’m about 24 hours away from dressing my cats in costumes and putting on a (very sharp, bitey) show. But if that’s what it takes to keep spirits up and minds occupied at home, that’s what we will do.
