Look what I got at the library!!  Bockris is a biographer of Warhol, Reed, and others, and Malanga was a member of Warhol’s Factory and a dancer with the VU’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable performances.  So I guess it’s no surprise the book focuses mainly on the Factory days, but there are all kinds of interesting nuggets here, from Jonathan Richman on the Velvets’ equipment (they had a Vox endorsement deal) to Sterling Morrison on Doug Yule and the last stand at Max’s.  (Debbie Harry says they were great; Danny Fields thought they were obviously worn out.)  I had no idea Brian Epstein was interested in managing them before his death, and that they turned down several offers to tour in Europe.  There’s even a postscript about the ‘93 VU reunion and how Reed (and his wife at the time, Sylvia) fucked it up by being a big jerk as usual.  (Just my opinion: sure there would not have been a VU without Lou, but they were never as good after Cale left.)

Up-Tight: Live at the Empty Bottle, Chicago, October 27, 2005

It has been a while since I posted an audio file so here's a treat from the archives. This is a audience recording I made with a mini-disc recorder back in 2005 when the heavy Japanese psych rock band Up-Tight played the Empty Bottle in Chicago. The recording is 37:42 minutes long and 86.3 mbs so give it a minute to load. This is by no means a professional recording, but it is the band's complete set and I think it captures this under-recognized group in very powerful form. Up-Tight was really heavy and transcendent that night. Sadly, when they tried to play in Chicago a couple years after this show, only the drummer was able to get in the country and the group could not perform. Click here to listen.

Final track of their s/t album, reissue out next July on Desastre, 無題 is an epic 18 minutes tour de force, that takes you to another dimension as if the Velvet Underground Sister Ray’s would have a child with Acid Mothers Temple, while listenning to Amon Düül under Codeine.
