UK Young Artist Festival November 2014 - Amber's Reflections
Here we are standing in the Ramada Encore, plush carpets beneath our feet, our muscles feeling weak from carrying our heavy bags filled with costumes that will bring memories of the future. Feeling like a VIP we check in – all expenses paid for. This makes you feel a little more swarve than you probably should at the age of 21.
As SoulUrge5 are reunited, I can’t admit feeling a sense of pride. I’m proud of our achievements, and this feeling was overwhelming at the Launch Event on Thursday Evening, The Y Theatre, the perfect setting for bring creativity alive. Happy was the key word of the night (which I think was helped by the amount of free wine…Thanks UKYA for our terrible hangovers Friday morning!) As the smiles lit up the room you could sense an atmosphere I believe creative people are great at – passion. Whilst networking we had some amazing conversations about other artists cravings, these ranged from sculpting to installation to photography to unusual musical performances using electricity! Thanks Joe Snape a fabulous Friday night!
The days leading up to our performance were filled with busy rehearsals, getting our blood pumping and adrenaline flowing through our body. Some crazy good exhibitions in Silver Arcade and Two Queens left us honoured to be back in Leicester and surrounded by talented artists.
Then came Saturday night.
Hearing the audience outside knowing we had sold out, left my heart racing, creating a rhythm in my chest almost as fast as Gurdain Singh Rayatt’s fingers playing his Tabla! (mind-blowing talent by the way; check this guy out!) As our wonderful composer David Gurney played his immersive, intimate music, I was then held in a bubble I was safe in. I felt confident surrounded by the sound and the many screens – ready to do my bit! As I held a hand help projector, feeling like a savvy tech know it all, I turn to see the amount of people that filled the space. Wow. The only word to explain the feeling running through my body.
The feeling of freeness with movement was wonderful. To be able to take moments from images and express yourself is something I dream in, so to be able show this in a fantastic festival to a delightful audience was superb. The movement flowed and the connection was always clear. Ellen and I are proud of our collaboration with David and look forward to future work with him! Thank you again for all your hard work and involving the amazing Drum Pad, we’ve still got to have that jam sometime!
It was great to have such positive support from all board members and project managers, directors and assistants. So a big TY to all of you and all your fabulous volunteers who made the weekend a memorable one.
  Till next time Leicester!
