I wish goyim would ask me about specific places in Israel, instead of just Israel. "What do you think about israel" ey country of my people, idk, it's there, and it's cool ig? "What about poiltics there" That's not even in Israel, Israeli politics rn is basically all about gaza and lebanon and Iran's other proxies, I just want to rant about tel-aviv or tzefat to someone who has no personal stake in the matter. Let me complain about the busses in bnei brak, I don't care to talk to you about the bombs, the news is already down my intestines about that.

Egyptian Terrorist Murders 3 IDF Soldiers
An Egyptian policeman/terrorist crossed the border over Shabbat and killed 2 Israeli soldiers.
A few hours later, he killed a 3rd soldier and wounded a tracker who were searching for him.
The two soldiers killed in the initial attack have been identified as 19-year-old Sgt. Lia Ben Nun of Rishon Lezion and 20-year-old Ori Yitzhak Iluz of Tzefat.
A few hours later, also within Israeli territory, a third IDF soldier was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with a terrorist who was later identified as an Egyptian police officer.
The soldier who was killed in the second attack was named as 20-year-old Staff Sgt. Ohad Dahan of Ofakim.
All three were members of the Bardelas Battalion.

Once upon a time, in the city of Tzfat (tsfat? Tzefat? Safed?)...
There existed a girl.
Once upon a time, in the city of tzfat, there existed a series of sky blue notebooks. Once upon a time, in the city of Tzfat, there existed music.
How does the story end?
The girl has gone, and taken her notebooks with her.
But the music is there, still.

Omg this is so beautiful
Also I've been working on a list of all the pogroms, massacres, and exiles over the past 200 years. And while YES I DO kinda regret picking such a long timeframe, I'm sure as FUCK learning A WHOLE TON ABOUT JEWS IN ERETZ YISRAEL BY ACCIDENT, OH YES I AM
Anyway did you know???
Safed is also spelled Tzfat, Tsfat, Tzefat, Zfat, Sfat, and Ẕefat.
Safed is one of the cities in Israel that has housed Jews continuously for thousands of years - since it first became a town in 66 BCE.
Tumblr media
Jews have been immigrating to Safed for centuries. Two liturgical poems for the Ninth of Av (which for me begins in an hour or so!) refer to Safed as a place where priestly families (Jakim and Pashhur) settled after the destruction of the Temple by the Roman Empire in 70 CE. There are documents showing Jews moving there in the 1100s. Beginning in 1492, it was a haven for Jews exiled from Spain. It became a hub of Jewish people and culture in the 1500s and 1600s. In 1778, over 300 Jews emigrated there, and even more followed in 1810.
Safed is the city at the highest elevation in Israel. The Jerusalem Talmud mentions Safed as one of five elevated spots where fires were lit to announce the New Moon and festivals during the Second Temple period. Who knew that fire was Calendars v1.0?
The Crusaders built a huge fortress there in 1168, in between massacring and enslaving Jews and Muslims.
The Crusaders can eat shit.
Then the Ayyubid Dynasty (Arab-Islamic Empire) conquered it, destroyed the fortress, gave the place back to the Crusaders in a treaty, the Crusaders built ANOTHER one, the horrible Mamluk Empire conquered it and expanded it... where was I going with this?
Nobody knows.
After the Mamluks was the marginally better Ottoman Empire. Safed became the center of an amazing center for wool and textile production, and also Kabbalah. The wool and textile production was as Jewish as the Kabbalah.
Safed became known as one of the Four Holy Cities of Judaism.
Safed's Caro Synagogue contains a Torah scroll that is at least 400 years old.
It's definitely probably not older than that, because HOO BOY have there ever been a lot of pogroms in Safed. And somehow people always seem to have made sure to shred the Torah scrolls 😭
They also liked to loot and burn the synagogues in all those pogroms. Hey, who doesn't?!?!?!?! Despite this, there's an entire Synagogue Quarter in Safed today, and a total of 22 synagogues.
Marc Chagall painted the one above in 1931!!
Tumblr media
There's also an Artists Quarter. In the 1950s-60s, it made Safed the art capital of Israel.
Tumblr media
Nearby Meron is mentioned in the records of Egyptian kings who invaded the territory more than 3,000 years ago. It had a synagogue in about 300 CE.
Meron is where the two great Talmudic sages, Hillel and Shammai, are buried.
Mt. Meron is where Talmudic sages Rabbi bar Yochai and his son Eleazer are buried.
According to tradition, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai hid in a cave in nearby Peqiin and wrote the Zohar. Now it's a monument:
Peqiin today is almost entirely Druze. But there is one Jewish family that has lived in the town since Rabbi Yochai was there.
Unfortunately, only one member of the family is left. Her name is Margalit Zinati, she's the only Jew in the town, and she is 93 years old. Her family home is run as a heritage site.

Menachem Bluming Muses: Your Torah
Have you ever wondered why G-d chose the Sinai Desert to give the Torah?
I would have suggested Jerusalem or Tzefat or L.A., but why a desolate desert?
Here’s a thought...
There are times when we are distant from Jewish community physically or psychologically... Maybe one is alone in a hospital room or on a college campus that lacks Jewish community or in covid quarantine. Maybe they live far from Jewish infrastructure or are far from Jewish observance.
Torah is never far from you! Your relationship with Torah and G-d is always accessible and available to you. You can connect wherever and whenever. There is no specific venue or time required, just that you open yourself up to that meeting and you will find G-d to be close!
Torah was given in a barren desert because even in the desolate deserts of life and this world, G-d is always close. He yearns for a relationship with you and removes all barriers to invite you in...

on yom kippur, we had a guest over, and he was the nephew of the rabbi who presided over prayers in my yeshiva in tzefat, and people called him by his last name, so same name as the rabbi, and this rabbi, he was the one who you'd constantly have to be on the lookout for so he doesn't tell you off, like, no one is constantly focused on prayers 100% of the time, but this guy made sure you were at least focused on him if you weren't on god. the person next to me getting called by the most stressful rabbi in school's name was significantly not good.
