HI HI HI OK I LOVE UR WRITING SM AND IDK IF UR STILL DOING LIKE THE SHIP THING BUT IF YOU ARE I WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE IT IF U COULD SHIP ME WITH ONE OF EVANS CHARACTERS (no pressure ofc 😭)
Ok so I'm 5'3 with a chubbier build and I have a little bit of acne
My hair is medium length, kinda shaggy almost like a mullet(??) and it's black
My eyes are kinda a mix of doe eyes and dead eyes, and they're a dark blueish gray
My aesthetic is a mix between the unhinged older brother in a 2000s movie, and a grungish/vintage style??
Im bisexual and Im like heavily autistic 😭 Im like constantly talking about my hyper fixations and I ramble WAY too much to the point it's really annoying to my friends and stuff
My music taste is Midwest emo/divorced dad and a little bit of other genres idk the names to;
Car seat headrest (obv my name LOL)
Nirvana
Alex g
The front bottoms
Foo fighters
The smiths
Weezer (omg that's actually kinda embarrassing.)
Radiohead
Tyler the creator
lil peep
Ghost Mane
Deftones
Lana del rey
Faye Webster (real men cry while listening to Faye Webster)
Wisp
My humor is stupid stuff like niche references and stupid Pinterest memes, and also silly quotes like "I hardly know her"
I love love loveeee Pinterest, like I'm on it 24/7 it's actually suchhhh a problem 😭😭
My love language is physical touch, like always holding hands, constantly asking for kisses stuff like ESPECIALLY if im high which is a lot
I've been told I'm a golden retriever bf, but I've also been told I give off goldfish vibes?? idk what that means but do with that what you will 😭 LMAO
Always worried about being annoying, lowkey always in need of validation but I CANNOT ask for it for the life of me
(Again don't have to do this no pressure!! But Tysm if u dooo!)
oooo this one was a bit harder for me but I ship you with Kyle!
idk why I had such a hard time picking! I think maybe because you give off lots of different vibes? I almost went with Tate, and then I almost went with Jimmy, but finally settled on Kyle.
would love to sit and listen to you talk about your fixations for hours. He wouldn’t even really necessarily talk about them with you, more just listening intently.
music taste. He loves it. Always asks to play your playlists and albums that you listen to. He loves music and finds you in your music taste. It’s his way of getting to know you better.
His humor is awful and he laughs at the dumbest things, but that’s what makes him so funny! You could tell him the dumbest joke and he’d crack up. It wouldn’t even be a fake laugh, he would actually find it funny.
Would always peek over your shoulder while you’re on Pinterest, just watching you scroll and pointing at certain pins every once in a while.
physical touch is Kyle’s biggest love language 100%. It’s the easiest way for him to express himself and feel loved. Loves snuggles, cuddles, any sort of touch he’s loving it.
Goldfish vibes omg 😭 Ngl kyle too. He’s the biggest golden retriever baby in the world but also is so so stupid. Even before his death.
Has trouble validating with his words, but shows it through his actions. Always trying to make sure you know you’re loved and that you’re happy.

not sure if you're willing to write something like this but,,, im curious, do you have hcs for dorm leaders on what would their music taste be? :DD (i mean lets just assume that their world has the same artists with ours lmao JDHSKD)
OOO YEA LETS RAPID FIRE THIS!! if u have any hcs abt their music taste that differs tell me i wanna know !!
riddle is hard to figure out, i feel like he would genuinely enjoy classical music (because they got bangers) but also only listen to early 2010s pop music. i'm gonna name these three artists that leona would listen to, and people who get it, get it, and those who don't don't; tame impala, tyler the creator, and kanye. azul is a music elitist and solely listens to indie music from before the 2000s, specifically the 70s and 80s. he would listen to david bowie, but would prefer more soft rock. what artist is the sole exception to everything stated above? queen. kalim would listen to pop and kpop! he's a simple guy, ariana grande and loona are all he really needs. he had a one-direction phase, and somehow is a fan of almost every kpop girl group. he might listen to drake and kid cudi on the side. vil is somebody who says he likes all kinds of music, and actually does. he really likes show tunes, rock that's heavily influenced by classical music (i don't know the genre name but i hope you know what i'm getting at</3 malice mizer kinda stuff), and this man would die for taylor swift, lana del rey too. idia listens to vocaloid, i don't take ANY criticism on this! his favourite voice is meiko or kaito. he'd like giga-p and hi-rng songs!! he also likes utaites like ado or mafumafu! malleus would listen to, surprisingly, mitski. i feel like he would stumble across her then just get roped into her music, unintentionally. i find it funny just imagining him going to lilia or another diasomnia member and explaining different mitski songs. he would unironically like creep by weezer (same here though..)

also this is probably the most fanon thing because i can’t see tsuki listening to anything else other than xxx bart simpson edits?
no angst, incel energy?, unorganized, fanon lmao
You’ve Got Everything Now- The Smiths
i think he dabbles in the smiths every once and a while
tsuki likes to tell every one that he listens to the smiths and that his music taste is superior

Tumblr Girls- G-Eazy (feat. Christopher Andersson)
this song summarizes how tsuki views women.
there is no way in HELL this man respects them cmon
also he sings this like he’s had sex before??
there is so much doubt in my brain that he has ever seen a woman naked

mans will take this to his GRAVE
honorable mentions!
Ifhy- Tyler The Creator (feat. Pharrell Williams)

do all of the music ask
oh man that's a lot of questions! this took me forever lmao and this is a super long post so i'm putting it under a read more. but thank you!!! 🖤
1. what song off a otherwise popular album do you think more people need to hear? i'm super bad with these but the first to come to my mind was Deus in absentia from Meliora
2. what band/ artist needs more love? hexvessel, twin temple and awake again !!! awake again are Amazing live!! but they don't have enough fans, please go listen to them!!!
3. who do you think is/ are the most overrated artist/ band? tbh metallica is one of them,, i get they are important and influential but i hate how you Need to listen to them or you aren't listening to Real Music TM
4. what are your favorite subgenres of music? for the longest time it's been that weird industrial goth metal disco thing that turmion kätilöt is .. but honestly i'm not sure if i have a favourite
5. share a little known fact about a band/ artist you love? it always scares me to state things i'm not 100% sure as facts..
6. when someone asks you for a music recommendation what bands/ artists do you say? depends what music they are into but usually ghost, mcc, pimeys
7. how much do you actually like those artists, be honest. they are some of my favourites. i don't know why anyone would recommend bands they don't like???
8. what is your biggest musical guilty pleasure? i don't believe in guilty pleasures But that being said i do sometimes turn my spotify private if i'm listening to something i don't want everyone to see xd it's usually finnish metal like mokoma or stam1na or finnish pop
9. how do you make your playlists? usually when i'm sad and need something else to think about and end up making really sad playlists with the same 50 songs on every single one
10. what are the best playlists you’ve made? "currently stuck glistening to", "songs that hurt my heart but in a good way" and "emo tb (vittu tää mikään tb on, oon vieläkin emo)"
11. what artist have you pretended to listen to to fit in or sound cool? i can't remember doing this.. except maybe when i was around 14 i didn't want to tell a boy i liked that i didn't like metallica or oasis so i just pretended i was fine with listening to them lmao
12. what was the first artist you remember being pretentious about? i don't knoow.. i think i was more pretentious about hating bands as a kid.. like i used to say i Hated bmth when in reality i didn't care enough to even listen to them lol
13. i know you say you hate modern pop, but do you actually? if so, why? i don't hate it, there are some really nice songs here and there but i just don't listen to it enough to really care or know anything. but if i hear a nice song i don't really care who it's by
14. the smiths, mac demarco, tyler, the creator, joy division, brockhampton, the strokes, the cure, frank ocean, neutral milk hotel, radiohead, kendrick lamar, the beatles, weezer, death grips; you can only keep three, which ones will you chose? smiths, cure, neutral milk hotel
15. be honest, do you listen to any female artists? if you do do you feel superior to the other pretentious music kids because of it? i don't listen to enough female artists and i feel bad about it and i'm trying to find new bands !!! but twin temple, djerv, amy winehouse and paloma faith are some of my favourites
16. how do you feel about artists “selling out”? idk if i believe it that.. of course in some situations it makes me not want to listen to their newer stuff but i think you have to do what you have to do to grow and take chances ..but when you are already a huge band and it starts to feel like you are doing it all just for money it makes me lose interest
17. do you think going to a big venue is worth it to see an artist live? it is!! but you have to be there early. it's such an amazing feeling when you know there's a whole stadium full of people there for the same reason!!
18. how do you feel about venues with seats? it's an experience, some bands fit them but i'm not a fan. i like to move around
19. what artist did you know about before they got big? uhh maybe pimeys?? are they big ?? ghost was getting more popular when i found them but they weren't this huge, maybe yungblud?? i've followed him for a while and he's really getting popular now !
20. how does it make you feel when an unknown artist you like blows up? it makes me feel really happy and proud for them but there's always the fear or what will happen next, how much will they change
21. “no one should be judged for their taste in music” do you agree with this statement? i do, you can listen to what ever you want. if it makes you happy or feel something, go for it!
22. what artist did you try to like because you thought they were “cool”, but just couldn’t get into? i said this the last time but father john misty is one of these.. i really want to like him but idk something is missing.. also fear of domination, i love their singer Saku but just can't get in to them for some reason
23. what artist can you absolutely not stand? there's a couple of modern bands that are playing 80s metal thay i really don't like, and uhh not to sound edgy and boring i really don't like coldplay
24. what artist do you think influenced your style the most? i i don't play anything so my clothes and hair are super influenced by mcr, rammstein and hanoi rocks
25. do you watch anthony fantano? if o how much do you let him influence your taste in music? i'm sorry but idk who that is..

A challenge that had been dead a long time ago
and I don’t have a diverse playlist. But here we go!
1. A song you like with a color in the title Black Balloons Reprise – Flying Lotus, Denzel Curry
My favourite performance from Curry and production from Lotus. “Life is the ugliest bitch I ever messed with But she quick to down that nut back like Nesquik”
2. A song you like with a number in the title A Tale of 2 Citiez – J. Cole
“Anybody is a killer, all you gotta do is push 'em to the limits”. Now give me the watch.
3. A song that reminds you of summertime Sangria Wine – Pharrell Williams, Camilla Cabello
Cmon, it’s Pharell. “Let's float around like the fruit at the top”
4. A song that reminds you of someone you would rather forget about Somebody Else – VERITE
“I'm looking through you while you're looking through your phone and leaving with somebody else”
5. A song that needs to be played LOUD m.A.A.d city – Kendrick Lama, MC Eiht

6. A song that makes you want to dance Man Don’t Dance – Big Shaq
Dance, no. Rambling while also pointing my finger in the air, yes.
7. A song to drive to Easy – Mac Ayres

18. A song from the year that you were born Changes – Tupac Shakur, Talent
A posthumous release by the classic legend.
“First ship 'em dope and let 'em deal to brothers. Give 'em guns, step back, watch 'em kill each other. "It's time to fight back," that's what Huey said. Two shots in the dark, now Huey's dead. I got love for my brother. But we can never go nowhere unless we share with each other”
19. A song that makes you think about life Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst – Kendrick Lamar

Probably one of the coolest production by Paak. But sure hell, this song makes me cry. Thanks Nate Dogg. “It's the rap singer, the hook master”
21. A favorite song with a person’s name in the title CLOUT COBAIN – Denzel Curry
Another side of Mr. Curry. “I just wanna feel myself, you want me to kill myself. Man, I been on my own, Lord, I'ma need some help”

23. A song that you think everybody should listen to u – Kendrick Lamar
Just listen. No Skip.
“Loving you is complicated, loving you is complicated. I place blame on you still, place shame on you still. Feel like you ain't shit, feel like you don't feel”
24. A song by a band you wish was still together So Fresh, So Clean – OutKast
This is not a band, but I hope they still make stuff together. “Those huge baby eyes, get to runnin' off at they mouth. And tellin' me everything that's on your nasty mind”

My favourite from Ms. Zefanya. “Wait a minute, my head's a mess. Please don't tell me you like my dress. Why am I wishin' we were wearing less?”
27. A song that breaks your heart Let Her Go - 6LACK

28. A song by an artist with a voice that you love G.O.M.D – J. Cole (Live Version)
I am part of the people that overrate Mr. Cole…
“So every day I thank the man upstairs. That I ain't you and you ain't me. Get off my dick, whoa”
29. A song that you remember from your childhood Not Afraid – Eminem
It’s one of the first hip-hop song that I know, and from that day I know Marshall is on of the G.O.A.T, despite this is not his best record.
“Forget the Earth, he's got the urge to pull his dick from the dirt. And fuck the whole universe”
30. A song that reminds you of yourself RICKY – Denzel Curry
A song about family, that without their advice and support, I am nothing. “My daddy said, "Trust no man but your brothers. And never leave your day ones in the gutter". My daddy said, "Treat young girls like your mother". My mama said, "Trust no ho, use a rubber"
--------------
Nice nice, only 5 out of 30 are from K-Dot.

Hiya
I’m sorry this is really long and most people probably won’t read the whole thing… My name is Ilke, I’m 15, and I live in Cambridge, U.K. I have submitted before but I’d like to again.
I absolutely love horror/thriller (the more mindfuck, the better) movies and Wes Anderson films, also 90s movies (any genre) are quite good. At the moment I’m watching the show ‘Stranger Things’ and I’m trying to watch all of Wes Anderson’s films.
I usually listen to indie/alt rock, but it’s hard to tell because my taste in music changes often. Speaking of music, my favourite artists/bands are Weezer, Cake, Milky Chance, Gorillaz, Chance The Rapper, Tyler The Creator. I’ll listen to anything to be honest.
I enjoy cycling, taking day trips (to London, Birmingham, Oxford etc. ), going to concerts and sports (hockey, volleyball, and swimming).
In my free time I draw, journal, go thrift shopping although I haven’t in a while, do homework (duh) and go on adventures/long walks.
I am looking for an internet friend who I can rant to and just be really close with, someone who has a bit (or a lot) in common with me. Gender or sexuality is not important to me (no racism, sexism, etc. please), however i’d prefer some between the ages of 14 - 18 but I think I get on better with guys. Lastly, I can speak Turkish, English and I am well-oriented with French. So, I don’t mind if you would like to speak one of those languages with me instead of English. You may ask me for photos if you’d like to see what I look like, I can’t attach any photos atm because the option is not working.
✉️ Message me if you have anymore questions or would like to be friends :)

Longer Than I Thought - part 4
GIF
Who: Calum x Female OC
Inspiration: the song Longer Than I Thought ft. Joe Jonas by Loote.
Series Content: Swearing, drinking, mostly angst with some fluff, mentions of sex but not smut
Word Count (this part): 2,263
A/N: As promised this is a longer one! It’s mostly Faye’s memories/flashbacks to various times in her and Calum’s relationship. Thoughts, critiques, comments, love? 🍻
Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4 - Chapter 5 - Chapter 6
“I love you.”
Those were some of the last words Calum said to her. And she knew he meant them. He really meant them. Calum wasn’t someone who threw around the word “love” lightly. The day he told her he loves her for the first time was one of Faye’s favorite days. Well, it used to be one of her favorites.
She and Calum had just woken up on a Sunday morning, hungover from the night before. In fact, they had gone out to this same bar that Saturday and stumbled home at 3:00, barely making it to the bed in a fit of expletives and giggles. Faye didn’t even think they changed into pajamas--just stripped out of the most uncomfortable of the clothes they had on.
The next morning, Faye woke up with Calum’s arms wrapped completely around her body. He still had his button-down on, but just boxers with it. He was snoring lightly against her and she had to precariously maneuver out of his grasp.
Almost falling over from the sudden, intense pounding in her head, Faye carefully peeled off the jeans that she still had on, and changed into her favorite of Calum’s sweatshirts. She threw her hair into a messy bun then tiptoed to the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of water, taking a moment to sit and start to rehydrate, before turning on the stove.
As she worked on breakfast, humming quietly to herself, she didn’t notice Calum had woken up. He stood, silently leaning against the door frame with a huge smile that made his eyes crinkle around the corners.
Faye finished crafting two sausage, egg, and cheese sandwiches with her mom’s famous home fries on the side. She smiled to herself at the two plates, before looking up and noticing Calum stepping into the room towards her.
“Hey babe,” she hummed.
He came up behind her, pulling her close to his chest and leaning his head on her shoulder. “You,” he said, voice quiet and raspy from sleep, “are perfect.” He pressed a kiss to Faye’s cheek. “I love you.”
Faye slowly turned in his grasp to face him. “What?” she asked, not sure she heard him correctly.
Calum’s dark eyes met her golden brown ones and he repeated, “I love you, Faye.”
Faye knew that it was difficult to get into Calum’s heart. Besides his family, the only people he really trusted enough to confide in or be vulnerable with were his bandmates. The fact that he was standing here now, looking at her with an unwavering, sincere gaze, made Faye’s heart swell. She raised to her tiptoes and pressed her lips to Calum’s, but couldn’t stop from smiling through the kiss.
“I love you too.”
It was times like that, when she and Calum would just hang out, that Faye missed the most. They used to go over to Michael’s apartment and just drink beers and play video games, eventually all falling asleep scattered around the room.
Faye always would sit in between Calum’s legs on the couch, knowing that his sweatpants didn’t offer much of a barrier.
“You better stop moving around like that, sweetheart,” Calum mumbled lowly into her ear one night and Faye struggled to hide her smirk.
“Cal you suck!” Michael called from across the room, taking first place in Mario Kart, per usual.
“Yeah, shut up,” Calum called back, then leaned towards Faye again, “Bathroom,” he growled, his fingertips already trailing lightly up her bare thigh.
Five minutes later, Calum quietly slipped through the door after Faye. She was already perched on the counter, pajama shorts crumpled on the floor.
“Fuck,” he breathed, quickly closing the distance between them.
“You couldn’t have waited until we all were asleep?” Ashton had said when the pair returned to their spot on the couch.
Cal grinned across the room to the drummer and squeezed Faye’s hip playfully. “Nope,” he retorted.
No matter what, everything with Cal was an adventure. Faye remembered the weekend they went to Boston Calling two years ago. The two had each saved up money for months to be able to afford tickets for just one day of the three-day festival. After pregaming at Faye’s, they head over to the stadium, eager to see as many bands as possible.
“I look just like Buddy Holly! Oh-oh, and you're Mary Tyler Moore!” they screamed during Weezer’s set. “I don't care what they say about us anyway! I don't care 'bout that!”
Calum was like a kid on Christmas. He knew every single lyric of every song and Faye wasn’t sure she ever saw the smile leave his face the entire time Weezer was on stage.
They were in the middle of the crowd, Calum standing behind her with his arms wrapped around Faye’s shoulders. Periodically, she would glance up at him, his cheeks flushed in a combination of alcohol and dancing, and Faye would fall even more for Calum, something she didn’t think was possible.
Towards the end of the set, the clouds started rolling in and within minutes, the downpour started. Spectators on the outskirts of the crowd started scrambling with their jackets if they had them, or scattering to find some sort of shelter.
But not Calum and Faye. They stayed at the stage until the very last note was played then sprinted across the grounds to catch Cage the Elephant. Hand-in-hand, the two splashed through giant mud puddles, blinked away the raindrops hitting their faces, and just barely avoided slipping on the wet grass.
As they approached the back of the crowd at this stage, Calum spun around, capturing Faye in his arms and lifting her off the ground. She squealed at the sudden motion, holding tightly to Calum’s shoulders, even though his grip around her waist was steady. Calum wanted her in his arms forever. When he set Faye back on the ground, he paused, still holding her against his chest.
“I love you,” he said. It felt like ever since he said those three words for the first time, he wanted to tell them to Faye every second.
She stood in front of him, her hair dripping, makeup running, and shirt plastered to her body, but she still had the widest grin. She pressed a light kiss to his lips, “I love you too, babe.”
But Calum didn’t let her go. He pulled her even closer and deepened the kiss. His hands brushed along the cold, goosebumped skin on her arms, then cupped her cheeks. His tongue darted across her bottom lip and she let him roam further. Faye hummed against him, gripping the fabric of his t-shirt in her fist.
When they finally broke apart, Calum rested his forehead lightly against Faye’s. “Today is perfect,” he said.
And it stayed perfect. They didn’t care about the rain or the mud or the fact that they were definitely going to wake up tomorrow without voices. When Faye wasn’t on Calum’s shoulders or hugged close to his body, she was holding onto his hand. The two barely separated the rest of the festival and the second they got back to Calum’s apartment, he had her pinned against the wall, kissing and biting at Faye’s jaw, neck, shoulders, anywhere Calum could get his lips.
Light moans escaped Faye’s mouth as she melted into him, pulling at the fabric sticking to his muscular torso. Calum lifted Faye into his arms, gripping tightly to her thighs as they discarded their clothes on their way to the bedroom. Neither cared that Ashton would be coming home at some point.
If you asked Faye now what the best sex she’s ever had was, she would say that night. None of the random hookups she’s had in the past few months could ever compare to the way Calum’s body fit with hers or how giving, thoughtful and attentive he was.
Immediately after discarding the condom that night, Calum carried Faye’s exhausted body to the bathroom where they sat together in a warm bath, washing away the cold rain. They sat mostly in silence, listening to the sounds of each other’s heartbeats and relishing in the feeling of being together.
All of these memories threatened the tears to fall as Faye stood in the crowded bar, not truly seeing anything around her. She hated Calum for ruining her night and so many nights before this. She hated that every time her phone rang her heart jumped at the sliver of hope that he’d be calling her. Finally. After all this time.
She still remembered the first time he called her. They had just met the day before at a mutual friend’s huge end of summer cookout. Faye, clumsy as usual, spun around too quickly after grabbing a beer from the cooler and walked straight into Calum’s chest.
“Hmm maybe I should be drinking what you are,” he had teased, eyes glinting playfully as he took in her features.
Faye looked wide-eyed at the gorgeous, dark-haired man in front of her, his tattooed arms flexing as he steadied her. Faye was acutely aware of the feeling of his rough hands on her skin. She felt her cheeks heat up, which definitely didn’t help her argument that she wasn’t drunk. Calum just smirked at her as she made some excuse to leave, his eyes following her motions as she walked across the backyard.
After that, they kept bumping into each other the rest of the afternoon. Both Calum and Faye would admit that they orchestrated most of them. The more flirtatious comments made in passing, the more their eyes scanned the party for the other.
Finally, Calum ventured over to where Faye was sitting in a quiet corner of the yard. Smiling, he handed her a can of the same beer she’d been drinking all day, “Can I join you?”
The next day, Faye meal prepping in her kitchen for the upcoming work week when all of a sudden the music from her phone cut off and her rarely-heard ringtone started playing. Rushing across the room, she saw Calum’s name pop up on the screen.
“Hello?” she asked, desperately trying to hide her nerves. No one ever called her, especially not cute guys she just met 24 hours ago.
“Faye? Hey, um, it’s Calum…”
Faye could hear the nerves in his voice and she instantly felt better. “Hey,” she returned, a smile crossing her lips as she leaned against the counter, listening to his adorable accent.
“...I was, uh, wondering if you wanted to get dinner with me this week? If you’re free? Or whenever...”
“This week sounds perfect,” Faye answered quickly, maybe too quickly, but she didn’t care. She hadn’t stopped thinking about Calum since she left the party and had talked herself out of a dozen drafted texts to him.
“Really? Oh, great! Um, how’s Thursday?”
“Thursday’s great,” Faye replied, hoping Calum could hear the smile behind her words.
“Okay! Perfect. I’ll text you the details?”
“Sure,” she said, then added, “Calum?”
“Mmm?” he asked.
“You called me. Like in person...on the phone?”
“Yeah?” he returned nonchalantly, “I think you’re deserving of more than a quick, impersonal text message.”
“Oh,” she said quietly. Faye couldn’t explain the way his words made her heart swell. She had no idea how to respond and the silence elicited a soft chuckle from Calum’s end.
“I’ll see you on Thursday, Faye,” he said, drawing out her name just slightly. He lingered on the ‘y’ sound just a little bit more than American men did. Faye liked hearing Calum say her name.
“Faye?”
Except that wasn’t Calum’s voice. That was Julian’s voice. Faye blinked a few times then focused on her friend standing in front of her and holding her hand.
“Faye?” He repeated, his voice laced with concern. “Please tell me something. Do we need to leave? What happened?”
Faye’s gaze shifted past Julian to where the three Australians were still standing by the door. Her head was swimming with thoughts of Calum, hazy from the alcohol. She didn’t speak, just nodded to Julian who moved to wrap his arm around her in support, but Faye darted away.
“Hey!” she practically yelled as she stormed towards Ashton who was closest.
“Faye, holy shit,” he said, rubbing a hand over the back of his neck and glancing at his friends nervously.
“Tell Calum that he really fucked me up and I can’t get him out of my fucking head,” she shouted, finally breaking down in tears, “Tell him that I wished I never fell in love with him because now I can’t stop. It’s too hard and this all hurts too fucking much. Tell him...tell him...” she sobbed, struggling to find any words to say, “...it’s all his fault.”
She grabbed onto Ashton’s arm to prevent herself from collapsing. Her whole body was shaking as she cried, all the pain and hurt and heartbreak she’d ever felt over Calum was tearing through her.
Before Ashton could respond or Luke or Michael could step in, Julian came rushing over. His arms wrapped around Faye protectively and she immediately fell into his chest, tears and makeup staining the front of his shirt.
“Come on,” he said softly, brushing one hand lightly though her hair.
Faye let Julian lead her out the door and onto the street without a second glance at Ashton and the others. She didn’t care that it had started raining or that her makeup was already running down her cheeks, or that they were probably inside the bar laughing at how pathetic she was.
—
Next part preview: “He was planning on bringing this up more gently, but if Cal was going to snap at him, he was just going to hit him with the truth.”

IGOR is something special
I wanna start by saying I’m not the biggest Tyler The Creator fan, I Love Flower Boy as an album, but it’s not like he’s an artist that I would specifically ever call out as one of my favorites. zero disrespect intended in that statement, but it’s important to point out before I make my point here.
It’s Friday May 17th at 1:51 AM as i type, IGOR has been released
and immediately my twitter timeline is flooded with my friends talking about what an amazing album this is, I was listening to Flower Boy earlier today unaware that Igor’s arrival was imminent, I follow Tyler on twitter and I've been hearing about it but it’s a testament to my level of fandom that I saw these promotions but never cared enough to pay enough attention. Today has been a hard day for me personally that all lead up to an extremely stressful night. I decided to slip away from my family and take some alone time to listen to what my friends are all collectively freaking out over, and from track 1 IGOR’S THEME it instantly feels like I’ve been transported out of my stressful existence and into a space where nothing exists but the music in my ears. Tyler tends to have this affect on people. I recall Tyler having a panel at comic con one year the same day Flower Boy was released he was doing a panel for his show The Jellies! and at the Q&A of the panel a fan came up and said something along the lines of
“I Know it just came out but Flower Boy is my favorite album of all time”
Tyler’s response was something like
“Chill it’s only been out like an hour”
Quote is definitely not verbatim and i couldn’t find the footage but i swear this happened*
He has this instant impact with his music, he put out a statement a little over an hour before the album dropped.
Tyler took the time to advise the fans to give their full attention to the album, that it would be best to listen all the way through without distraction, and I agree with him one hundred percent this album deserves your full attention and willingness to drift off into something I would call closer to an experience than an album I put on Tumblr TV and typed in “relaxing” just to have something I could look at without it being distracting and I would honestly recommend this, this album pairs well with 90′s anime aesthetic gifs. I really wished I had an E-cigarette while I was going my first time through.
It brings out a very floating through space vibe, and right now tonight I needed this album, and I’m more than sure i’ll need it on more nights like this in the future.
When I stopped and thought about just how much I had enjoyed my first go through before starting the second I had a moment to say to myself
“wow logic’s last album came out like a week ago I listened to it once, and completely forgot about it until right now.”
For context Logic is my Favorite rapper, I’ve listened through every studio released album of his more times than I can count, and his underground mixtapes a handful of times as well.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind Is by no means a “bad album” I really enjoyed it, and i feel bad to even compare it to anything else after only one listen, I’m reminded of him saying that he hates critics one listen reviews and that they should take the time to listen more than once before giving a critical opinion.
Which is fair, but what I’m saying is that as a huge logic fan who was there day one for his last four albums and his novel supermarket I didn’t feel any desire to go through it again. And that’s strange since I was overly obsessed with every single he put out before COADM dropped on loop. As a whole it didn’t inspire the same feeling that IGOR, an album from an artist I casually like gave me than a major release from someone I would without hesitation call my favorite.
I’ll listen to COADM again, and again and again. Because I love logic, his music has the same effect on me that weezer my favorite band does. It’s music that speaks to my soul, but part of being a fan of something that means so much to you is being able to admit when something misses the mark but loving them still all the same. And again to reiterate I liked this album.
But the fact that something I was eagerly awaiting from someone I love left me without much of a major impression, while an album I paid no attention to until it was all i could hear about now has me on my fourth listen hours after it’s release on loop in my AirPods right now that managed to melt away the stress and anxiety of an unusually bad day tells me exactly why
Igor is something special.

TØP Weekly Update #41: It’s Almost Here (Also, Happy Birthday, Jishwa) (6/18/17)
“Listen. It’s not that we don’t like Coachella. It’s just that we can’t stand it.” -Tyler Robert Joseph, 2017
Holy crap, guys. Tour de Columbus starts this week. That carries with it a whole host of implications that we’ll get to dissecting just under the Read More, and that’s only scratching the surface of what we have to discuss this week. I worked really hard on this one, with over ten total pages of text alone in the word documents before adding images to make sure I captured as much history and as many theories as possible. I’m so hyped. Let’s get to this.
This Weeks TØPics:
ARTOPIA Announcement
Firefly Recap
UPCOMING: Tour de Columbus Begins, and BLIND SPECULATION OF THE WEEK Returns With Gusto
Major News and Announcements:
The biggest piece of news this week technically leaked last week thanks to social media being a fickle thing, but it got its official announcement this week. In addition to the five shows, Tour de Columbus will be hosting a full art show for dozens of the Clique’s biggest artists called ARTØPIA. It will be held at Nationwide Arena on June 23 from 1-7, right in the middle of the week-long run of awesome things that we’ll be looking forward to later, and will include its own “performance” in the form of a screening of the old Blurryface Live in Oakland concert film. I admit to find that a rather odd choice, but I guess if you were bummed about not getting tickets to a TDC show, this is the next best thing. If Tyler, Josh, and Mark MST3K it, that’d make it more than the cost of admission- only there isn’t a cost, because all you have to do to attend is RSVP. If you can’t make it, it apparently will be streamed in some form on the band’s Facebook.
Honestly, this is just the coolest. I cannot think of any artist at their level as engaged with their fandom in this manner and degree. I truly hope that the boys attend this themselves, but even if they don’t, they’ve given some truly talented and creative friends an amazing opportunity, and it honestly kind of makes me emotional. I’ll be honest, my passion for the band has faded a bit in recent months, but things like this and the upcoming Columbus shows have reignited it by reminding of how truly good dudes these two Ohio boys are. If you’re curious of which artists are being recognized, here’s a Twitter thread that lists most of them.
Interviews, Performances, and Other Shenanigans:
The biggest event of this week was unquestionably the band’s headlining performance at Firefly (for now, you can find the official stream here, though it cuts out the performance of “Polarize” and, oddly enough, “Heathens”). Like both of the other festival shows they’ve played in the last month, this was a unique concert that really casts a light on how Twenty One Pilots is one of the biggest bands in the world right now. Firefly is, by all accounts, an amazing festival, but these two boys’ shenanigans still stood out from the crowd of talent. I can’t wait to see what stuff is in the future for them: they’ve proven themselves these last few years, and you can bet festivals in the future will be fighting for this band when they come back.
Highlights of this show:
As mentioned above, Tyler Twenty One Pilots really came out swinging against the biggest music festival in the world. Not only did Tyler verbally diss it, but the show itself opened with a video of a giant Godzilla-type monster destroying Coachella, complete with this iconic image edited in a gleefully troll-ful manner. As of now, I’m still unsure if this was a thing from the TØP or Firefly camp, but I’m leaning toward the latter, considering that Tyler has voiced his dislike of the Coachella culture before and that the Coachella promoter Goldenvoice also has a hand in putting on Firefly. However, I think Tyler might get away with that faux-pas considering that he used it as a set-up to talk about how Firefly is his all-time favorite festival to play.
After getting an impressive “YEAH YEAH YEAH” response for “WDBWOTV”, Tyler stated, shocked, “See, usually I complain and say ‘You can do better than that’, but that was very, very good, oh my goodness. But because we rehearsed doing it twice, I’ve gotta hear you one more time.” Also, “WHOO DOGGY.”
“Screen” has a nifty new synth track lead-in that I feel like I’ve heard before, but I can’t pin it down, so thought I’d point it out.
Tyler met Weezer, “That was a cool thing.”
Tyler casually brought up Josh’s upcoming birthday, joking “Don’t sing, we don’t care that much.” They crowd couldn’t really join together in a spontaneous rendition, but Tyler said that the seven different ones he heard were all “delicious”, wtf is wrong with this man.
In one of the cooler moments of the show, in celebration of Father’s Day, Tyler brought his dad, looking iconic as always in his white Jordans and his son’s red beanie, to accompany him in playing a Chris Joseph classic (and one of the band’s old favorite covers), DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win”.
Judah and the Lion got brought back on-stage for an abridged return to the old Cover Medley. “They smell so good,” said Tyler.
Speaking of Judah and the Lion, that band also talked about their experience of opening on the Emotional Roadshow with DuJour. The drummer, Spencer Cross, even tells a story of Tyler coming over the band with some “Dad wisdom”, because of course he would.
Here’s a quick little clip from MyMusicRX recorded at Sasquatch a few weeks ago in which the boys discuss their appreciation for The Hamster Dance. Yes, I’m serious.
Upcoming Shows/BLIND SPECULATION OF THE WEEK:
Alright, ladies and gentlemen. This is it. Between this update and the next, Twenty One Pilots will perform all but the very last of their announced shows for the foreseeable future. Let’s look into the venues they’ll be visiting, think back on the memories they’ve made there, and speculate wildly about what might be to come.
BUT, before we get into that, I want to throw a little spotlight on the site of the Clique’s upcoming pilgrimage. Columbus is the capital of the U.S. state of Ohio, with a population of around 860,000 people, meaning that only . It’s one of the nation’s most prominent college towns, particularly when it comes to football, with the program at Ohio State being particularly (in)famous (depends on where you’re from- my mom’s from Detroit, I’ve had to lie about where my favorite band’s from for years). Besides Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, the city has been home to all manner of famous figures: zoologist Jack Hanna, golfer Jack Nicklaus, Goosebumps author R.L. Stine, musical artists like Attack Attack!, Beartooth, Rascal Flatts, and Eric Clapton, and, most famous of all, Food Network personality Guy Fieri (all of that was according to Wikipedia, could be totally wrong on all of that).
I’ve talked enough about how special and unique this tour is. The last time the band played a full show in Columbus was their first headlining arena concert ever way back in the original Blurryface Tour in September 2015 (technically, they played a tiny private acoustic show at the Roosevelt Coffeehouse in January 2016, narrowly saving them from skipping a year playing music in their hometown). They’ve grown so much in their time away. This really will be a huge homecoming for them- it’s hard to imagine that all the people coming in from around the country/world to see them won’t cause at least a bit of a stir. God, I’m so hyped.
Show 1: The Basement (6/20)
Capacity: 300
The Basement show might be the one I’m most excited for, in all honesty. Twenty One Pilots have played at least four shows in the tiny venue that is literally a bar’s basement, dating back to the pre-Josh days, but they’ve been too big for it since long before their last show, the “topsecret” launch party for Vessel in January 2013 that was highlighted in the “Ode to Sleep” video.
I have so many questions. Will they play songs from Blurryface, and how will they sound in that setting? All the small shows they’ve done since those early days have been soft acoustic performances- will the setting bring out some of the punk rock elements that influenced their earliest work? Will the incredibly lucky lottery winners get to ask questions and interact more with the band, bringing back an element of the shows that’s been absent most of this era? Will the keytar return? Will Tyler take of his shirt again and make a whole new generation question if a duct tape mic is a sick tattoo? Will the bean scream? WILL THEY PLAY FAKE YOU OUT? (I could really ask that question of all of these shows. And I will.)
Show 2: Newport Music Hall (6/21)
Capacity: 1,700
Just a few miles north, right across the street from the campus of Ohio State University, the boys will play the next night at the historic Newport Music Hall. This is another venue that the band played constantly in their formative years, including one that saw the filming of their first official video (for “Jar of Hearts”) in 2010, the introduction of the song that would become “Ode to Sleep” (and the subsequent vote among the audience to name it), and the first place one Joshua William Dun watched this guy Tyler Robert Joseph play music. Most famously, the final concert the band played here was filmed by Mark and cut up into a series of performance videos that were part of many old fans’ first introduction to the band (I believe this was also the first show that featured the Holding On To You-backflip, but I could be mistaken). These sold-out and energetic shows played a major role in getting the band label attention, and were unquestionably key to their later success.
A few questions for this one. Will its proximity to a major college campus lead to a huge music riot/party in the streets outside? (I hope not, I want the boys to be able to get out and get home, but the imagery is amusing.) Will a full rendition of “Forest” be included? (Better be.) Will they wear all red? (Seems likely.) Most importantly: Will they play “Coconut Sharks in the Water”? Please, Lord, I don’t ask for much. Just give me this.
Neither the Basement or the Newport is set to have openers, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of special guests from the old days of trekking around Columbus. The biggest I’m thinking of, besides Zach for Kitchen Sink (I think he’s a shoe-in for at least one show), are Jocef for a rendition of “Be Concerned” (a song that has never, so far as I can tell, been played live) or Nick or Chris for a surprise reunion for an old song or two (*cough*TAXI CAB AND SLOWTOWN, FOR GOD’S SAKE, MAN, but also “Trapdoor” and “Air Catcher” and “Isle of Flightless Birds” and “Anathema” would be grand*cough*). I think the latter, especially, would be incredibly well-received by the fanbase, and though I’ve learned to stop getting my heart set when it comes to these things, I still believe in miracles.
Show 3: Express Live! [The LC] (6/22)
Capacity: Outside- 5,200 (Inside- 2,200)
The first of the “big” shows will be at the outdoor amphitheater of Express Live!, better known to the Clique as the old LC, located right next door to the Basement. The LC’s a hugely important venue to the band’s history. Tyler’s job here contributed to his growing passion to one day be on-stage. They announced their signing to Fueled By Ramen and debuted many tracks in development for Vessel here on April 2012. Their October 2012 performance here, with its multi-leveled staging, encompassing (at the time) setlist, and baffling Gangnam Style dance/drum covers remains my #1 choice for “Concert I Would Buy A One-Use Time Machine For”. In 2013, the boys filmed their first official concert film there (a memorable performance itself that featured Zach’s first on-stage delivery of “Kitchen Sink” and the Ohio State marching band helping with “Trees”). The last time the band played the space was over two nights toward the end of the Vessel cycle.
Now they’re back, with the help of openers Mutemath. We can definitely expect a TOPxMM performance. I wouldn’t expect Gangnam Style, but, ya know, I’d be down. I fully expect people on the roofs of nearby buildings try to see/potentially parachute in. The Clique are nuts.
Show 4: Nationwide Arena (6/24)
Capacity: 20,000
This one’s the only venue the band doesn’t have a real history with beyond the fact that it’s located right across the street from The Basement/LC. Home to the NHL’s Blue Jackets and the annual bodybuilding Arnold Classic, this show will be opened by Public and Judah and the Lion, so we can probably expect another medley with the latter. Hopefully the guys have something planned up to help this show stand out from the rest, whether that be more older songs, more remixes or- dare I even say it- a small taste of what we might be expecting in the next album cycle. Goodness gracious. I can hardly contain my excitement.
Community Spotlight:
This week’s Community Spotlight is a bit different from usual. This time, the community is anyone who reads these updates (I know there’s a handful of you who do). Listen, guys. Tour de Columbus is in two days. As of posting this, “Stressed Out” is just five million views short of passing one billion on YouTube. I crunched the numbers. The video will pass that mark eventually, no question. To make to that marker before the last show, however, it would have to be viewed about 800,000 times every day between now and the Schott show. Now, that’s below what I’ve calculated to be the average daily view count for “Stressed”, but that number’s obviously pretty inflated by the time the song was first breaking through. The Clique’s gotta step if we want to reach that goal, is what I’m saying.
Don’t care if you have to play it on a loop, spam it to all of your family members, or what. Do what you’ve gotta do. Let’s get “Stressed Out” to a billion.
Catch you guys next week with a recap of all of the craziness in Columbus. As always, all the power to the local dreamer.

Toronto Mike Interview
Toronto Mike is the host of the Toronto Mike’d Podcast. Mike started the podcast in 2012 and it now has well over 600 episodes. CamBrioMusic.com is delighted to present the following interview. It has been condensed for length considerations.
Cam Brio (CB) = Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with me. I wait all week for your “Pandemic Fridays” episodes with Stu Stone and Cam Gordon.
Toronto Mike (TM) = I know you’re a superfan because you’re always declaring Stu Stone the winner right when the episode goes online. (laughs)
CB = What’s some of the most fun you’ve had with the musician episodes of Toronto Mike’d?
TM = I love the musician episodes. If you want to talk bizarre fun, that’s Gino Vanelli. He brought his guitar and pre-COVID everyone would sit here at the table with me. I could tell when he wasn’t exactly comfortable, he’d start breaking into song with his guitar. You’ve got to listen to the Gino Vanelli episode, it’s wonderfully bizarre. Another great one recently was Sass Jordan. She came ready to reveal everything and was so brilliant and fun. When some of my favourite Can-Con* musicians drop by like Moe Berg, Chris Murphy, Ron Hawkins, Tyler Stewart, or Hawksley Workman we have a really good time. The whole band Rusty came by because I was such a big fan and it was a dream come true.
CB = Hawksley Workman puts out so much music.
TM = He’s prolific, and I think he’s always trying to separate himself from his early hit, “Striptease.” The problem is that’s the song most people know him for.
CB = Who are some of the most fun people to “kick out the jams” with?
TM = Dave Hodge because he’s a sports media personality but you can tell his wheelhouse is music. Stephen Brunt is another sports media guy who loves his music. I love listening and watching people talk about the music they love.
CB = One episode of Toronto Mike’d I keep coming back to is the “Party for Marty.”
TM = That was something different than I was used to. It was the 10th anniversary of the passing of Martin Streek. I was invited to record live from the Opera House lobby, which meant all of these people from Mae Potts, to Alan Cross, to David Marsden, to Scot Turner, all of these CFNY people stopped by to talk with me before going into the big room. It was three hours with no pauses or edits, just live on the floor.
CB = Was it difficult to have a flow of guests that night with everyone walking around you?
TM = It was tricky, but people would help me out. There’s a woman there named Pina, who used to be “The Inside Edge Chick,” she became a wrangler for a bit. She would scout people for me, and I would ask her to bring them over.
CB = What are some of your earliest concert experiences?
TM = I was the right age for grunge, and I still listen to a lit of early ‘90s stuff. Like any typical listener of 102.1 The Edge, I was going to see Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam. I went to a bunch of Edgefests and Summersault Festivals that Our Lady Peace would organize. As the ‘90s progressed I would catch Weezer and Green Day when I could. A lot of the Edgefests would be interesting because the headliner might be Hole, but you would also catch five or six upcoming Can-Con* bands out of fifteen different acts on a Saturday at Molson Park in Barrie.
CB = Was Molson Park one of your favourite venues?
TM = I really like outdoor concerts more than indoors. In ’98 one of my favourite concerts was at Molson Park. It was for Pearl Jam’s Yield tour. The last time I was up there was The Last Bash in Barrie. I’ve also seen some good gigs at Downsview Park, and you could always save some money by getting the lawn seats at the Molson Amphitheatre/Budweiser Stage.
CB = The venue Rebel is in a pretty terrible location.
TM = Yeah, I remember when it was called Sound Academy and I saw Public Enemy there. That was one of my top five shows of all time.
CB = I love how your show always ends with the song “Rosy and Grey.” Did the Lowest of the Low allow you to use it?
TM = When I first started Toronto Mike’d in 2012, I had a co-host named Rosie and I was going grey. We both love Lowest of the Low and they usually end their concerts with it. I like how the song has a long build up at the beginning that I could talk over on my show. From Episode 1 we decided that would be the closing theme song. Eventually Lawrence and Ron Hawkins from The Low came over and they noticed that my show closed with one of their songs and they were cool about it.
CB = Your Danko Jones episode is really good too.
TM = Yeah, Danko is an interesting guy. I believe he’s more famous in Europe than he is here. He tours Europe like crazy and most people here just know his first big single, “Bounce.”
CB = Who are some local rock acts that should be bigger internationally?
TM = Well, I really only see hip-hop and maybe pop artists, like a Shawn Mendes, being popular right now. There is a young woman who Lowest of the Low introduced me to, and I loved her album so much. Her name’s Syke Wallace. She’s got amazing lyrics and rocks hard but there doesn’t seem to be any room on radio in 2020 for a kick-ass rock singer like her. The mainstream charts are dominated by hip-hop and rap.
CB = Do you have any favourite concert films or documentaries?
TM = I just re-watched The Last Waltz and it’s such a classic. The Joe Strummer one is awesome, I really also like the Joy Division one. I revisited the original Woodstock documentary and it still kicks ass. I watched the Tom Petty one shortly before he passed away. Give me a good music doc and I’m in.
CB = In terms of concerts, I’ve been hearing that a lot of people think that artist meet and greets won’t come back even after we have a COVID vaccine and it is under control.
TM = I don’t know what will come back and what won’t. When I see a movie or a TV show and people and give each other hugs or handshakes at a business meeting, I think, “that’s not happening anymore.” Some practices will definitely disappear.
CB = Have you watched any online quarantine music performances?
TM = Yeah, I have been tuning into Ron Hawkins every Tuesday night on Facebook. But if you remember back in June 2019 Lowest of the Low, Ron and Lawrence from the band, played one of my events. They changed the lyrics in “Rosy and Grey” from “read Henry Miller” to “listen to Toronto Mike,” and “drink some Guinness from a tin,” to “drink some Great Lakes from a tin.” It was my birthday, too!

Notes on: New Chums
The New Chums are a catchy, riffy, indie-rock band from Phoenix, AZ that have one EP out and are releasing their second EP this Fall. The band just released their new single, ‘I Won’t Let You Go’ and it is getting a great reception, even landing on a Spotify editorial playlist, which is very rare for a unsigned band. New Chums is made up of four members: Seth Boyack - lead vox/guitar, Matt Lloyd - lead guitar/bgv’s, Cassandra Clark - bass, and Ben Hedlund - drums.
If you’re looking for some summer jams, or jams to take a road trip with, check out New Chums! The band took a little time to answer some questions for us! Take a few and read up!
------------------------------------------------------------
NON: How did you all meet? How did the band form?
Seth: New Chums started when I moved to Phoenix, Arizona and couldn’t find a band to join. So he did what most musicians do, he posted a Craigslist ad. Not long after he posted the ad he found drummer Ben Hedlund and the rest his history. Actually it took me a little more time sifting through Craigslist until he found the best players possible. Next up came Matt Lloyd who writes the coolest guitar parts around and lastly he found dear old Cassandra Clark who took our already good rhythm section and make it a thousand times better; so yeah, Seth was sold on the band line up from there.
NON: How long have each of you been doing something in music (play an instrument, sing, etc)?
Seth: I started playing the violin at six and then quickly moved to piano and then stopped playing music for a few years until he started singing for a rock ’n roll band in high school and he’s been doing something in music ever since.
Ben: I’ve been playing drums since I was a 5th grader, so most of my life.
Cassandra: I always loved music - my mom loves to tell the story about me, age 1, dancing at my cousin's band concert in junior high. I loved the music and the spotlight then, and it has not changed one bit. I started playing piano and flute in fifth grade, which lasted a few years. Then, in college, I was running a sound board and lights for a local band and thought, "Why I am behind this sound board? I should be ON stage!" The next day, on a complete whim, I drove to the local music store and signed up for bass lessons. I've been playing bass in bands ever since.
Matt: I started playing guitar my freshman year in high school and have been hooked ever since. NON: What drew you to this style? Who are some of your influences?
Seth: As a kid I grew up listening to guitar driven, melodic bands so that has always been the style I’ve written my songs in. Music for me started with bands like Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Beach Boys then it transitioned to bands like Nirvana, Weezer, The Smiths, and then moved in the direction of The Strokes, Interpol, The Killers and from there the bands can get really obscure and really great. I’m always on the hunt for new music and something that gets me excited.
Matt: A lot like Seth, my first memories of music were my dad playing bands like The Beach Boys, The Monkees, The Beatles, etc. So I still love those bands today, the songwriting aspects and melodies of those groups have stood the test of time. But then as a teenager I got more into punk-rock and loved the fast guitars with still catchy vocal melodies, bands like Greenday and MXPX. Then as I grew as a guitar player, my sweet spot became guitar-driven pop/rock. Bands like Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters. Those are still many of my favorites bands today and definitely are noticeable in our New Chums sound. NON: What would be your dream venue?
Cassandra: I have played at one of my dream venues (the Whisky on the Sunset Strip), but I would love to walk out on stage at the Hollywood Bowl. I mean, if I'm dreaming, sign me up for Madison Square Garden and London's O2 Arena while I'm at it.
Ben: This is a tough question because I’m not sure I have a real answer. That said, I’m a Boston guy, so I guess playing a show at Fenway Park would be neat. That, or going back over to Europe to play again would be a ton of fun.
Matt: There are so many great places and the guys hit on a lot of them already, so I’ll add Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. Seth: Glastonbury. NON: Do you get nervous before a show? If so, how do you handle/channel those nerves?
Seth: Nope. I just get exited to play.
Ben: I don’t really get nervous with much as I’m a relatively laid back person. That said, there are nights when I feel like I don’t have it as far as playing goes. When that’s the case, I just simplify my playing a bit more than I already do.
Cassandra: I get mostly excited and antsy on stage. I wouldn't call it nervous, almost anxious but the good parts of it. I absolutely feel like I'm living my best life on stage. When I was little, I would stand on my coffee table and watch music videos, pretending I was in the band. I still feel like that little kid every time we play a show! Matt: I definitely get a nervous excitement before playing. I think Steven Tyler said something like ‘nerves should never go completely away before performing if you are passionate about it. I think that sums it up pretty well. The waiting to get on stage is the hardest part. I like to hold my guitar off stage just to feel it in my hands and play through any parts. Once I hit the stage though and we go into our first song, the rush of excitement hits and the nerves fade away. NON: What’s the story behind your band name? Who came up with it?
Seth: Seth’s the mastermind behind the band name. I got the New Chums name when I was on holiday in Sydney, Australia in 2013. We were staying downtown Sydney and during the day we would go do the normal touristy things. One day we went to a local history museum called, Hyde Park Barracks. While reading the numerous historical placards I read an entry that said, and I’m paraphrasing here, ‘when a new ship would arrive in Australia carrying inmates from England the current inmates would announce that the New Chums had arrived.’ Something about the name New Chums and the idea struck a chord with me. At the time I was in the process of trying to put together a band and the idea of new people/new chums coming together to form something based around a group concept seemed only fitting to name the band, New Chums. NON: What are you plans for the future? Where do you all see yourselves in 5 years?
Seth: The plan for the future is to keep writing and recording music. These days so much of the business is luck, right place at the right time, trending and getting some public backing behind your music for things to really take off. I figure if we keep writing good music, make solid recordings and put on great shows hopefully we’ll be doing all that and more in five years, but just doing it better.

In my last post, I promised to produce another list of artists and groups that I either missed entirely, didn't listen to very much, or whatever. All of these albums were released in 2017, so consider this to be an augmentation of my Best Of list. Had I known about a few of these albums earlier, I would have changed up my Best Of 2017 List to include them, thus reducing the heavy hip hop content. Anyway, again in no particular order, here is some more great music to check out from last year... Priests - Nothing Feels Natural
I am not sure why, but I have always loved poppy, post-punk/indie rock a la Karen O and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Maybe it is the memory of seeing Blondie live in concert at The Tibetan Freedom Concert in 1999. Anyway, this band fulfills that in ways that the female-fronted groups from the Best of 2017 list did not. Where Alvvays and The Courtneys had a garage essence to their poppy, punky indie rock, Priests is even more raw, with spoken word lyrics, layered over faster melodies and crunchy guitars. This album is on 6 Best of 2017 lists, including Pitchfork, Billboard, Stereogum, and NPR. Chicano Batman - Freedom is Free
I love the earlier Chicano Batman stuff, and it physically hurt me to not be able to include this album on my list. It just doesn't have the strong essence of funky, latin rock that I love from the other albums - instead focusing on lighter melodies and softer songs, albeit with lyrics about social issues. However, some other best of lists probably include this album. I say if you like this one, go listen to the older stuff and you will be blown away. The Weather Station - self-titled
A self-titled album as your fourth is a bold move in my opinion, however, she seems to have hit her stride with this one. Love songs and ballads presented in a bold, powerful way make up most of this self-titled album. Moody and introspective, the folksy alt-country draws the listener in; "Thirty" is a highlight on the album. She brings to mind Joni Mitchell and Jewel, but is not to be confused with either one. Charly Bliss - Guppy
I don't know how I missed this band - they combine fuzzed out, orchestrated guitars somewhere between Weezer and Radiohead, with sweet, sugary female vocals. I think they really rock. While comparisons to Veruca Salt and Paramore can also be made, it doesn't cheapen the greatness that is Charly Bliss. The music is so fun, I would most definitely have included this album on my Best Of 2017 List. Tyler Childers - Purgatory
Another artist that I am sad to have missed out on, Tyler Childers plays new country that sounds like the Appalachian mountains, where I spent time every summer of my childhood. Fiddles, bluegrass melodies, and production by Sturgill Simpson brings us yet another great, authentic country artist. I hope this album inspires many new listeners that love old Willie Nelson- and Waylon Jennings- style country. He, also, would have taken a spot on my 50 Best List of 2017. Zola Jesus - Okovi
Dark, intense, operatic, and stunningly beautiful at times, the newest release by Zola Jesus is not my favorite album; however, the musicality, production, and content here are astounding and notable. Urgent, emotional, compelling, and gothic, this album is for those looking for something that satisfies the darker urges. Yaeji - EP2
Again, an artist that completely slipped by me...that after discovering, I really like. She sing song raps slowly and methodically, in this hushed, subtle, Korean-English combo that is uniquely catchy and interesting. She is kind of a rapper, it is kind of techno-ish, but her music is hard to define. If you like genre-bending new sounds, check her out. Her version of "Passionfruit" is incredibly dope, possibly better than the original, and has earned a spot on my faves playlist on Spotify. Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
Certainly the most death-centered, morbid, intensely sad album that I have ever come across. The artist recently lost his wife, and the whole album is dedicated to songs about her life/that loss/the aftermath. If you need a good cry, give this a listen. It sounds like sparse, stripped down Ben Gibbard/Postal Service -esque vocals and music, while maximizing the melancholy simplicity of that sound. This album is sad. It is about death. Listen with caution. I'm sure it will pop up on many best of lists this year. Danay Suarez - Palabras Manuales
This album is freaking amazing. I don't even know where to start. She sings and raps in Spanish with so much fluidity that listeners will be drawn in immediately. Straddling the line between rapper and singer, jazz and hip hop, she brings out many aspects of her Cuban heritage in her songs. Modern reggae and reggaeton can be heard, but also classic Afro-Cuban rhythms a la Buena Vista Social Club; the mixing of the modern and classic is dope, and will delight listeners of many types of music. If you are into Spanish-language music at all, listen to this. Parquet Courts - MILANO
Finally, a male-fronted post-punk/indie-rock group! Perhaps the most interesting combination album of last year, Italian composer Daniele Luppi's work with Parquet Courts and Karen O produced a throwback sound that is reminiscent of the early NYC punk ethos. The album hearkens back to Velvet Underground, but makes it this new noise, mostly due to Karen O's strong vocals. As stated above, I love Karen O and pretty much everything she does musically. Benjamin Clementine - I Tell A Fly
Benjamin Clementine put out an album in 2016 that absolutely blew me away. I found out about him through an interview with David Byrne (of Talking Heads), and was immediately drawn to its theatrical vocals, piano-driven melodies, and curious song orchestrations. This album makes that album look boring by comparison, full of overly theatrical, cinematic themes, with incredibly powerful, intense vocals, and strangely complex and equally cinematic instrumentation. It would have been on my Best of list for sure, so check it out for something totally unique. LOOPRAT - In < No Time
I know I hinted that there was already enough hip hop on my Best of 2017 list, but I had to shout out these homies. LOOPRAT is a St. Louis born-and-bred hip hop collective, consisting of over a dozen members. They are 5 MC's, a full band, and a backup singer, and their live shows are incredible. A live hip hop band, most similar to The Roots, but incorporating other elements of hip hop and jazz as well, they play regularly at small colleges in the midwestern region. I've had the pleasure of getting to know 3 of the MC's in the group, and they are on the path to greatness. Watch out for this crew - they are coming for your ears. White Reaper - The World's Best American Band
It is a damn shame that I didn't listen to this album more over the course of the year. It should have been on my Best of 2017 list for sure, especially due to the fact that it is the only true rock and roll album that I listened to all year. These guys play good, old-fashioned American rock and roll, rocking out with party anthems and rock ballads alike. You will see this album on other best of lists for sure. If you like this one, check out both of their earlier albums - you won't be disappointed. I'm not sure what I've got coming on next week's blog, perhaps something non-music related, considering I have reviewed over 60 artists in the past 2 posts alone.
