Woah woah woah. Twitter is shutting down in Brasil? I'm thankful for your mental health but what?
Yep.
TLDR: Elon fired everyone in the Brazilian offices of twitter but legally Twitter can't continue existing in Brazil WITHOUT a legal representative. So now our Federal Supreme Court subpoened him to apoint a new representative or the website is getting shut down in the country
The long version with the context about the fight:
It all started when the supreme court started to shut down in the country profiles of brazilian people who had commited crimes using the website (an example is Monark, a dude who literally used his profile to say we should give n*zis and racists unlimited freedom of speech [he fled to the US to escape prison btw]).
Elon caught wind of this and decided to threaten our constitution and said that he would get the profiles back on because he wouldn't accept a government restricting "freedom of speech" on his platform. The supreme court issued a statement that if he did that, he would face a fee everyday for every account reactivated. It was money so he didn't do that (or maybe turns out he couldn't do it anyway and he was just lying for his lil fanboys).
This was all back at the start of the year but suddenly almost two weeks ago it was reported he fired every single employee in the offices of brazil, including the legal representative.
Then tonight, around two hours ago the official profile of STF replied and tagged elon with the doc of the subpoena because since they didn't have a legal representative, they couldn't do it in the proper way. The subpoena says that Elon has 24 hours to appoint a new guy for the job or the social is getting shut down in brazilian territory.
So we have 3 options for whats gonna happen in the next 24 hours:
Alexandre de Moraes (The guy who Elon started a one-sided beef with) backs down and doesnt shut down the website (highly unlikely)
Elon backs down and appoints a new guy so he doesnt lose the 4th biggest public of his site
Twitter gets shut down until Elon's manchild's ego gives in
thats all <3
Edit:
This was Elon's reply to the tweet. YES he is pathetic like that
Edit 2: it's currently 17:38 brasilia time of 30/08 and Twitter is bound to get disconnected soon, the order has been given by Moraes. People who use a VPN to access Twitter will get fined 50k reais (almost 9k dollars).
Yesterday a note was posted lying about Brazil being a dictatorship and saying that one of the people being censored is a 16yr old girl. The truth is that it's a grown ass man that use his daughters account to promote attacks on delegates, ministers, judges and other politicians. They also call orders to ban n*zi accounts "illegal orders" (WHICH ARE VERY LEGAL UNDER THE CONSTITUTION OF BRAZIL). They also say "we don't want every other country to have the freedom of speech laws the US has" meanwhile they've been trying to impose them in a sovereign state.
I would say what I want to say to Elon but unfortunately my mother taught me to keep those kinds of thoughts inside. Just know they're three letters <3
edit 3: twitter was officially unavailable on brazilian territory by the time it struck midnight of the 31st
Edit 4:
Translation: 🚨 NOW: Elon Musk is looking for executives to represent Twitter/X in Brazil, to negotiate the platform's RETURN in the country, reports Correio Braziliense.
he's going to do what cellbit said kkkmk he purposely let them suspend it, then after a few days he'll come out and be the savior of the brazilian people and say he only did it for us
Don't let elon fool you. He doesn't care and is probably only doing it because his investors are threatening him with money

I want to share it here because I'm not seeing anyone talking about this injustice on Tumblr.
Idk what the hell happened between Elon Shit-Musk and the Brazilian government, but prohibiting the civilians in there to access popular social networks and socialise with other people around the world is just so absurdly unfair.
And here you might say "Oh, don't exaggerate so much, they still have Instagram, Tumblr, etc" but that's not the main problem for me. There are people and influencers who made their account there since the day Twitter was created. People who over the years built an audience, whether they did blogs, shared their opinions and masterpieces or just liked to talk and comment under their friends'posts. And I'm certain that a good portion of these people are Brazilian.
I'm not Brazilian myself though, I'm from the pizza-making boot-shaped peninsula also known as Italy, and fortunately the Italian government did not decide to decapitate Twitter here too. Not yet at least. I hope.
So why am I complaining about something that doesn't even involve my people?
Well... I just feel so sorry for the Brazilians. I believe that everyone deserves the freedom of speech, no matter how right or awfully wrong they are. Yes, there are people who can be really annoying or, hell, can have some extremely controversial opinions, but I think that people often forget that the more importance and vocal we become about the person we don't like the more powerful they become.
I know that sometimes being vocal about something wrong can be useful, it can unite people to fight injustices and change things for the better, but at the same time there will be annoying people, like Elon Fuck-Musk, who will use this attention to their advantage and eventually gather people who will be on their side.
So what do you do in this case? You ignore them. You stop giving importance to what that idiot is saying and move on with your life. And when people will realise that this idiot's opinions are not getting traction and attention, they will stop giving importance to it too. And when that idiot will realise that no one is listening to them, maybe they'll realise that what they've been saying is stupid.
Not saying that it'll certainly work with people with bigger followings, there will always be people that are stupid enough to lick Elon or Trump's feet no matter what, but as long you stop giving importance to their followers at least you'll have your mind clearer from negativity.
My point being, I don't think that any governments should ban any social media from their states, it's like prohibiting your child from going to their favourite park just because it has a broken bench. One rotten flower doesn't ruin a whole garden, idk if it makes sense.
Phew... That's pretty much all I had to say about this situation. I got very sad because the Twitter account of my friend @panhbr (a wonderful person and amazing artist btw you should follow him) is about to be obliterated at any moment and I wanted to use this opportunity to talk about the importance of freedom speech. I don't think I'll talk about political stuff again (mostly because I don't know much about politics in general and I don't want to be attacked by people who are "fans" of it) but it is pretty liberatory to vent about stuff like this.
Edit: So uh... Some people from Brazil corrected me and said that it's not a freedom of speech problem, it's just Elon that did a bullshit move as always. Of course. I hate that man so much. But I think that what I said about not giving importance to stupid people is important, so I'm keeping the post up. Thanks to the Brazilian folks who corrected me 👍🏻🇧🇷

fun fact btw: brazil is like, the 6th country that most uses twitter, with around 21 million people (according to a ton of diff statistics websites that i admittedly dont know a lot about)
assuming this is correct, elon prefers to lose his 6th biggest userbase than to comply with brazilian law and ban nazis and people spreading dangerous misinformation off the platform, something something my american free speech eagle sound effect
oh but cis is a slur and everyone who says it should get suspended according to him, hell yeah man i love the free speech from america eagle sound effect /sarc
Twitter is about to be banned in Brazil, why?
Have you seen the news about Twitter (now X, but I refuse to call it that) being banned in Brazil? Have you been wondering why that is? I’m Brazilian, and here I am to explain things to you.
You’ve likely noticed that since Elon Musk took over the social media network, hate speech on the platform has skyrocketed. White supremacist and Neo-Nazi groups have been using Twitter to disseminate racist propaganda and hate speech. And although the United States might not be doing anything about this, other countries are not so indulgent. Brazil being one of them.
Racism and incitement of hate (including speech) are crimes in Brazil. So is political disinformation, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism. Hate speech of any kind is a CRIME in Brazil.
The Brazilian Supreme Court ordered Elon Musk to do something about the political fake news and hate speech on his platform, and Elon responded by shutting down all offices in Brazil.
The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) then ordered Elon Musk to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, as NO BUSINESS can operate in the country without a legal representative that can be held responsible to crimes and answer to them in a court of law. The STF gave Elon 24 hours to appoint this legal representative, and now that the deadline has passed and Elon has not complied, it seems that Twitter will be shut down in Brazil.
TL;DR: Elon is salty that he’s not above Brazilian law.
#i feel real bad for the BR artists that mostly used twt for commissions tho. i hope they can regain their following#anyways a friendly reminder: if ya rely on social media for your commission/business income try to post on more than one!#dont put all of your eggs on the same basket cuz you never know if the basket is gonna be bought by a shitty billionaire#BRASIL SIL SIL

Photo
this is a photo of cristiano ronaldo and kaká at the 2010 world cup. i’m sure you’ve all seen it before, but you might not know the story behind it, which is so over-the-top on cris’s part that i’m honestly a little embarrassed for him? (no i’m not i love it.)
some players get excited to play against their club teammates in international tournaments. some players who show sympathy when their club teammates are unlucky in international tournaments....and then there’s cristiano ronaldo.
it all begins back in december 2009, when fifa originally announced the 2010 world cup draw. everyone immediately zeroed in on group g, the closest thing to a group of death that year, with three heavy-weight teams: portugal, brazil, and didier drogba-era côte d’ivoire.
cris and ricky were in their first season playing together at madrid, so of course everyone wanted to hear what they thought about facing each other. and right away, cris began telling reporters he was excited to play against ‘teammates’ and ‘friends’:
"To play against Brazil, Ivory Coast and (North) Korea will be very difficult. But I am happy as well because I am going to play against my team-mates, friends, so in this way is good but in football terms it will be tough.”
this comment is even better when you realize that kaká was literally the only player from real madrid (or any of cris’s former clubs) on the three other teams in group g. as the tournament approached, cris dispensed with any kind of subtlety about how much he was looking forward to facing ricky specifically:
“Of course we speak about the World Cup - especially with Kaká because we speak the same language. Brazil is the favourite, not just in the group but in the tournament because of the experience they have. He [Kaká] knows about Portugal though, because he lost against us two times and he knows it will be very difficult. I think we will make it through our group.”
he even got ricky to promise to swap jerseys with him at the end of the match:
"We didn't bet anything, just that we will exchange jerseys," Kaka said. "We have a good friendship and a lot of respect for each other."
cool. normal stuff.
but then, tragedy struck! five days before their match against portugal, brazil played côte d’ivoire.... and kaká was sent off, and banned from playing the next match. (it’s the only red card he ever got while playing for brazil.)
people were outraged! brazil’s coach called it “totally unjustified!” ricky’s 70 year-old grandmother swore at the ref! and you know who was angrier than anyone else?
“It’s not fair because Kaka did nothing in my opinion, and now he won’t play against us.
“He didn’t deserve that red card. I saw the game and I spoke with him about it afterwards. He was angry at the time but after the game he’s cool, he understands it’s part of the game.”
what i love most about this is, kaká’s suspension was objectively a lucky break for portugal going up against brazil! like, it made their jobs a lot easier, and cristiano ronaldo is literally the most competitive person on the planet! and yet, when faced with the prospect of not getting to play against ricky, cris was so upset that he called ricky to commiserate privately, and then publicly complained about it to the press!!!
(btw ricky specifically mentioned cris’s support in interviews about his red card.)
"It's an important match and of course I feel for not playing in it, but that's what happened," Kaka said. "I've been talking to Cristiano frequently and the last thing he told me was that my sending off was unfair."
😟😟😟😟😟😟😟😟
anyway, the match itself ended up being a pretty boring 0-0 draw. since ricky wasn’t there, people just assumed cris traded jerseys with another brazilian player... but wait! two days later, cris posted that photo of himself and ricky on facebook and twitter, showing that they’d somehow exchanged jerseys after all.
that’s right. these two were so insistent on having their special moment together that ricky snuck into the portugal dressing room after a match he didn’t even play in and brought a fresh jersey to drape tenderly over cris’s glistening bare torso, while wrapping himself in the sweat-soaked shirt cris had been wearing all afternoon.
but that’s not all, my friends. no, this is the point where somehow this story gets even more ludicrous, because there was originally a third person in that photo.
here’s the full version, which also shows cris’s portugal teammate, simão sabrosa:
in fact, it’s likely that simão was the one who asked for the photo in the first place, because it originally appeared on his official fan website a day before cris shared it on social media.... and cropped out simão.
so, just to sum up. cristiano ronaldo:
spent months gushing about how excited he was to play against ricky in the world cup
made ricky promise that they’d swap jerseys after the match
complained publicly and privately when ricky wasn’t able to play
snuck ricky into his dressing room after the match so they could swap jerseys anyway
stole a teammate’s photo of the moment and cropped the guy out so he’d have a more intimate photo record of just the two of them and their very normal, super low-key friendship
leave me here. i cannot go on.
