Devil’s Bride (Tulen morsian) (2016) is about Anna, a sixteen year-old girl living in a Swedish village in 1666. She works with the local midwife/healer, who is banished for witchcraft by the new judge. Anna is having an affair with a married man, and sees this as an opportunity. Anna denounces the man’s wife for witchcraft and she is arrested. When the next witch trial ends in a beheading, Anna realizes her mistake and tries to atone.

This is a historical film about witches and it is depressing. There is a lot of torture and beheading. It’s interesting to see what ‘witches’ were like though. Midwives, yes, but also alternative healers. It didn’t really matter whether or not their methods had an actual effect on the sick, it was something to do. It’s a placebo, it’s something for your spirit to believe in while your body heals. They’re caregivers. The villagers recognize the difference between black and white magic, but the judge says it’s all witchcraft. It ultimately comes down to a hatred of weird women.

I want a trans historical comedy. It wouldn’t be as depressing as this.

loviisa, aada, and aino were born in the 1600s in a part of the swedish empire known as finland. together they founded and ran a sanctuary for the witches and wizards of the area, teaching them to use and hide their magic during a time when using magic was extremely dangerous. the youngest sister, aino, was caught and executed as a witch, even though she was the only one out of the sisters who didn’t have magic. after this the elder sisters experimented with the darkest of magics to extend their life spans so they could hunt down and murder all those responsible for the witch hunts. some say that they’re still out there, somewhere, though their mission has changed during the centuries, as the world has become more secular...

loviisa rebels against the strict societal standards of her time. she often dresses in men’s clothing and speaks up against the powerful men in her community. she is intelligent and becomes the de facto leader of their community of witches and wizards. she is also the most hellbent on getting revenge against the men who killed her sister.

as the middle sister, aada rarely takes anything seriously. she is outgoing and social, often found sneaking out with her friends or otherwise causing trouble for her exasperated parents. after the murder of her little sister, she becomes more serious and stoic.

tuulia eloranta as aino lyydia aarnintytär

aino is the youngest sister and a squib. she is shy and prefers her own company over that of others. she is wrongfully executed for witchcraft at eighteen, which sparks her sisters’ quest for vengeance.
