Marbled Monday
This week's Marbled Monday is all about The Art of the Book! The Art of the Book: A Review of Some Recent European and American Work in Typography, Page Decoration & Binding was created by Charles Holme and published in New York and London by "The Studio" Ltd. in 1914. It includes examples of many different contemporary trends and styles and elements of book design, some of which are shown here.
It also includes a lovely binding with some interesting marbled paper. It is half bound in leather with marbled paper over boards. I say the marbling is interesting because it doesn't really follow an established pattern. It's most nearly a Turkish or stone pattern, but includes some irregular swirling that was done with a stylus. The colors are a great contrasting mix of light and dark blue, orange, and brownish maroon. The light blue is actually just the color of the paper itself, which we can tell because of the wear to the cover where it has worn through the marbling.

( click for recommended paired reading ) selin grew up alongside her twin brother in a relatively strict household with their father , a police officer , as the main authority figure in their lives . as a kid selin was just as troublemaking as her brother taylan , albeit a less frequent offender , so she was almost never blamed for any wrongdoing unless directly caught in the act . even then , her actions were always dismissed on the account of her brother's "bad" influence , and never on the authority of her own choices . she quickly realized her parents had already set the mold for who she was to become : she was the good influence , the good twin . witnessing firsthand the tumultuous relationship between her brother and father , and the way her mother turned an absent eye to their family quarrels , selin quietly accepted the role set out for her .
although the yalçınkaya siblings grew up in a well-off household , with their father being a police officer and their mother owning and operating the town's local grocery store , there was nothing extravagant about their upbringing . they never took lavish family vacations , never owned flashy cars , or did anything else to flaunt their wealth . selin's father , egotistical and ever obsessed with appearances and being perceived by the people of red creek as a good person , chose instead to instill the importance of giving back to the community . it was only ever with generous donations funneled back into the small town that people were reminded they had money . between helping her mother with the grocery store and community service , selin was very involved with all things relating to red creek from a young age .
even though she loved her town , she never imagined she'd live in red creek her whole life . classmates of hers might recall how she used to swear up and down she'd go to an art school abroad some day and backpack around the world in the summers between classes . the older she got , the more those dreams faded , until even selin herself would agree they sounded like nothing more than the fantastical ramblings of a child . art was still an innate passion , starting with the crayon scribbles on the walls of her childhood home to the tattoo design journal she keeps tucked under her pillow like a diary . but it was a passion immediately dismissed by both parents , deemed a hobby and not something practical nor perusable . to this day the only time someone in her family , aside from her brother , has validated her art was when she redesigned amrak's grocery store logo and storefront for her mother .
when her twin got drafted for the nhl , it was both the happiest and saddest moment of her life . she'd never been apart from him , never had to imagine what life might look like without the one person who knows exactly what it felt like to grow up the way she did . knowing the way he felt miserable in red creek , selin wanted nothing more than for him to find happiness away from the shadow of their father , even if she couldn't help but resent the fact that he got to leave and she was stuck exactly where she had always been . with one child gone , her mother's attention , when not on the family business , was focused entirely on selin . without asking for it , her parents had given her another gift , a path with every stone laid out already : she was to take over as owner of amrak grocery store . selin attended a nearby university as a business major , the occasional art class she got to take her only consolation . although it wasn't what she wanted , she had a mind for business management .
the years after graduating with her bachelor's were spent being gradually prepped to become the new owner of the grocery store . the more guilt and pressure she felt to do what was expected of her , the more she started experiencing new anxiety . it started with recurring nightmares , all stressed induced . she started having issues focusing , causing friction with her mother when it seemed like selin wasn't trying hard enough . returning to her childhood home at the end of everyday would bring an unshakable nausea that was only alleviated once she moved out into her own apartment . the culmination of her anxiety , however , came after her brother's accident , leaving selin feeling more unstable than she ever has . the recent disappearance if daniela estrada , who selin had been friends with her entire life , only added to it .
â€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒâ€ƒđ©đžđ«đŹđšđ§đšđ„đąđđČ & 𝐭𝐱𝐝𝐛𝐱𝐭𝐬

she wears her social butterfly label with pride . selin's never met a person she couldn't carry a conversation with , even if she's the one that has to do the most talking . living in red creek her whole life , chances are if you're a local , you know who she is , no matter your age . helping her mom with the town's grocery store from a young age , it was easy for her to interact with all sorts of residents . she was definitely the type of person that got excited when adults deemed her old enough to include her in town gossip and important matters . growing up her and her brother taylan had a reputation for being fun to go out with , and you never knew what to expect when the twins were involved ( though in her brother's case , it was often a fight ) .
although she by far has the better reputation , much like her brother , selin has a reckless side ; she's just a lot better at hiding it . friends and even distant acquaintances might recall the party she threw her senior year of high school inside amrak long after operating hours that ended with the register reporting on the mysterious vandalization and robbery of the beloved local business , a crime that never was . or perhaps regulars at redstone could recall her brief dalliances with the motorcycle gang members that like to pass through . her own father could recall one of the few times his wrath ever rained down on selin , when she was hauled into the red creek sheriff's department after smashing in the windshield of a disastrous date who wouldn't take no for an answer's car . because she's almost always so well behaved , or at least seen that way , she's surprisingly good at getting people to agree to trouble when she's feeling up for it .
she's terrified of disappointing her parents and has let that guilt and fear run her life . at this point selin feels like it's too late to go back or start over , and the weight of all her unlived dreams gets heavier everyday . she's taken over the grocery store and is trying her best to pour her full ambition into it , but if she could choose what she really wanted to do , it would be to become a tattoo artist . she's constantly sketching new designs , although her art has become increasingly private over the years , only choosing to share it with a select few people . those in her life have probably received more than one restaurant napkin portrait or homemade card , though , and if you ask her to make you something she would be amiss to turn you down . she was definitely that kid in middle school customizing her friend's converse or backpacks . aside from drawing , selin's love for art extends to pottery and even upcycling clothes . creative outlets are more and more important to her the more she gets into being a business owner .
she's been described more than once as the kind of girl that can light up a room with a smile . selin genuinely loves people ( or a majority of them , anyway ) and isn't the type of person to quickly make enemies with anyone . however , despite her friendly nature , if she doesn't like you , you'll definitely know it . she doesn't believe in pretenses , even if her parent's would prefer it . although physical violence is more her brother's forte , selin has a quick tongue , and her aggression almost always manifests itself in forms of verbal arguments . she can either be the type to hold onto a grudge forever , or forgive in a matter of hours ; it truly depends on the circumstance . excessively responsible since childhood , a product of having taylan as a sibling , if you need her you can always count on selin . still , she tries not to take life too seriously , all too aware with how short life can be .
she still desperately wants to get out of red creek and see the world one day ; her dream vacation would be somewhere warm surrounded by water . when she was fourteen and broke her wrist she made practically the entire town sign her cast . she's had the same hair length and style since she was a child , and would die before she ever cuts it . her favorite movie is pretty woman and she could probably recite the entire thing start to finish from memory alone . she's felt permanently guilty since she was eight years old but is being so normal and chill about it . her favorite season is autumn , specifically when the air first starts to feel crisp . selin used to play rugby growing up , although now her athletic side is satisfied by workout classes at the local gym , leaving sports to her brother . she has a fear of heights , but would jump out of an airplane or the side of a cliff in a heartbeat . she wholeheartedly believes she leaves a little piece of her heart in the pockets of everyone she's ever loved , no matter where they currently stand . is the type to legit believe a bear wouldn't attack her because it can sense her vibes .

Dragon Age Warden & Champion TAG
I was re-tagged by @samanthess since I’ve already done my Inky - so, now I’ll be doing my Warden and Champion!
Tumblr media
Name: Ceren Azra Tabris
Nickname: Ceri (created by Leliana - Ceren uses this nickname during later events, since she is undercover for awhile) | Mia dea, which is Italian for “my goddess” (solely used by Zevran)
Gender: Female
Star Sign: Pisces Sun // Libra Moon // Scorpio Rising
Height: 5’5” (Zevran is 5’7”)
Orientation: Heterosexual
Nationality/Ethnicity: Half-Fereldan/Half-Rivain (she is half-Welsh and half-Turkish)
Favorite Fruit: Pomegranate - she loves the texture and nibbling on them when multi-tasking.
Favorite Season: Fall - likes the cooler weather, but not too cold.
Favorite Flower: Water-Lilies - hard to find within Denerim, but her mother once purchased a small bouquet and hand-pressed them into her journal.
Favorite Scent: Jasmine and Sandalwood - muskier and earthy scents, soothes her and the latter is part of Zevran’s cologne.
Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate: Coffee - she tried a brew that’s local from Antiva, thanks to Zevran swiping some from a merchant.
Avg. hours of sleep: (Pre-Origins) around 7 hrs. (Origins and onward) around 4.5 hrs. due to nightmares.
Dogs or Cats: she likes both, but slightly prefers cats.
Number of Blankets: Rarely has one, unless facing extreme cold - has higher body warmth than normal, especially when Zevran cuddles with her.
Dream Trip: Antiva - she wants to try the many dishes that Zevran described to her, as well as taking down a cell of Crows like they’re an appetizer.
Random Fact: she hardly managed to style/braid her once it got as long as it did, but Zevran always offers to style her hair since he’s gentler when braiding or styling.
————————————————————————————
Name: Lysandra Brynhildr Hawke
Nicknames: Lys (companions call her by this), Lysa (Carver calls her this once their relationship is mended, but Bethany came up with it), and Mitt hjĂ€rta (Fenris calls her this after she teaches him some of her mother tongue - means “my heart”)

Favorite Flower: Amaryllis - Bethany and her grew a small garden once they fully settled in Lothering
Favorite Scent: Ylang-Ylang and Chamomile - once managed to purchase a candle infused with this scent.

Dogs or Cats: Dogs - she’s always been around them and she dearly treasure her mabari hound.
Dream Trip: Orzammar - she’d heard the details when reading the memoirs that Ceren had released and wants to see the culture herself.
Number of Blankets: Just one, especially since Fenris holds her when they sleep. She runs a little warm due to her magic.
Random Fact: Out of all of them [Ceren, herself, and Juniper] she’s actually the first to deal with pregnancy and gave birth shortly before her appearance in Inquisition.
Thank you so much for tagging me - I enjoyed doing this again! I hope you love them as much as I do - whoever wants to do their Warden and Hawke, feel free to use mine as a tag to you!!

I made a fan design for a Freak Du Chic Cleo! See under the read more for more about her design!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm an aspiring designer, and I've always loved Monster High, so I love making my own designs for the characters. I've finally worked up the courage to post some of my art, and first up is my FDC Cleo, based on belly dancing and snake charming.
For her design I went with snake and lotus patterns everywhere, her mesh bodysuit is meant to evoke snake scales while also being a triangular version of FDC’s checkerboard patterns, and she has a peacock feather in her turban bc they were associated with Amon-Ra and the eye of Horus, and lotus were a common motif in ancient Egypt and not something Cleo often has in her designs. Her outfits is based off of bedlah, an outfit often worn by raqs sharqi performers, more commonly known in the west as belly dancers, but modified to be more age appropriate for a character that’s in high school (despite her being thousands of years old, but I wasn't very comfortable with putting her in a super revealing outfit tbh), and also being true to modern Egyptian dancers, since it is illegal for women to publicly bare their midriffs, so the mesh bodysuit underneath was a good fit for her. It was tricky to strike the balance between what people think belly dancers wear and more traditional styles of outfit, but I hope I managed well enough (my mother belly danced frequently in my youth, and her costumes, albeit not Egyptian but Turkish in origin, actually covered her from head to toe. The peacock feather was actually inspired by some of her outfits!). Her sheer harem pants have two different designs going on, the jagged stripes found on many FDC dolls, and a starry diamond pattern that was partially inspired by diamondback rattlesnakes. She has some snake designs on her shoes and hidden in her clothing, and the dangly jewelry and coins all over are both inspired by real life costumes and Cleo’s own triangle and gem designs.
I hope people like her, I'm not the best artist, but I tried to replicate the Monster High style as faithfully as possible, since it's so different from my usual style. Please let me know what you think! <3
PLEASE Tumblr don't compress these images too much I'm BEGGING you

his three-year-old eatery was hardly well-seasoned. Salt Bae Burger — founded by the eponymous Turkish butcher who became a viral sensation in 2017 thanks to his flamboyant style of sprinkling salt on raw meat while wearing sunglasses and a fitted white shirt — has closed. The Manhattan restaurant, opened in 2020 after Salt Bae managed to launch a series of restaurants off his internet fame, shuttered earlier this month and now sports a sign claiming it is “moving to a new location” on its 220 Park Ave. South door Only, the “new location” is 412 W. 15th St., which is the address of Nusr-Et Steakhouse, one of two New York branches of an international chain chophouse venture also by Salt Bae, whose actual name is Nusret Gökçe. (The other NYC Nusr-Et Steakhouse is at 60 W. 53rd St., and the chop shop also has locations in Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Greece, according to its website. Salt Bae Burger has one other location, in Dubai.) A brand spokesperson clarified to Eater that the steakhouse will now serve the burger joint’s menu, which has included such offerings as the marshmallow-heavy, ice cream-free milkshake the Puf Puf, a topansa1.com $99 “golden milkshake,” legally contentious pink veggie burgers that were initially only free “for ladies,” and the signature Salt Bae Burger, featuring “Wagyu meat” and “oozy toppings” nypost.com fcode nyp28 according to Gothamist, which once called the eatery “the worst restaurant in NYC.

Eugene Barnes' Podcast Audio Book When Breaks the Maelstrom is a buffet of multinational intergalactic short stories that tend to mask genre lines. The stories defy convention because they are fantastical and interlude into the lives of men, women, children, and otherworldly beings.  Some events cannot be explained, except we accept the supernatural.  When we can break through the natural world's barrier, it is then that we can see other possibilities.  We can suggest that myths, phenomena, and legends may be familiar with reality.  It's an insight into situations we all may have faced at one time or another.  Since all skeletons in closets are not yet fleshless, it is only proper that we remake the frame to envision its beginnings.  Several stories are character continuations, such as Bounty Hunter: Japanese Style, Moon Trouble, and The Unnameable.  These tales loom prominently in their telling that they are the adventurers, adventures so many of us desire to be or become.  Please enjoy as you venture into original and undiscovered realms of fantasy and science fiction. https://audiofiction.co.uk/show.php?id=20240802-02 RSS: https://capporethpodcast.podomatic.com/rss2.xml

Murat in Königsberg, December 1812
While looking for more information of a certain general Loison I came across something much better: A Saxon report of Murat reviewing troops in Königsberg, while he was at the head of the Grande Armée, after the retreat from Russia and after Napoleon had gone home to warm cuddly Paris. Enjoy.
(Translated from: Karl Geissler, Geschichte des Regiments Herzoge zu Sachsen unter Napoleon mit der großen Armee im rußischen Feldzuge 1812, Jena 1840)
Even though the King of Naples, who immediately had the troops take up their arms before he descended, won everyone's heart at this inspection by his immense affability, he was particularly friendly towards the regiment of the Dukes of Saxony.
He first greeted it with the call: "Ah, ces braves Saxons!" and then expressed unconditional praise for its previous conduct towards Colonel v. Egloffstein.
He was less friendly towards the other regimental commanders, and as far as the 6th Regiment in particular was concerned, one even thought to hear the words: "que vous méritez des reproches", which perhaps referred to the above-mentioned, partly unsuccessful escorting of some money sledges.
Murat then had the regiments paraded before him and his brilliant entourage, with the remnants of the French and Italian regiments No. 1, 3, 29, 105 and 113 leading the way accompanied by the thousand-voiced cry of joy, "Vive l'empereur!"; then followed the Frankfurt and the ducal Saxon regiments, also shouting, "Long live the emperor!" and finally the 5th and 6th, both of which marched by in silence.
During this revue we had a very good opportunity to get a close-up view of King Murat, who attracted everyone's attention with his stature, expensive costume and rich harness. His face, his beautiful black eyes and black curly hair, which fell down on his kurtka, - a Polish suit, whose tight sleeves had an opening under the armpits - captured the eye. The collar was richly embroidered with gold, and a golden belt was fastened around this garment, from which hung a light sword with a straight blade, Roman style, without edge or guard. He wore wide amaranth-coloured trousers and yellow gold-spurred boots. -- The splendour of these clothes, which were covered by a green gold-embroidered coat, was further enhanced by a square red Polish chako with broad gold embroidery and a plume of four large ostrich feathers falling back, from the centre of which rose a magnificent heron feather. The saddle and stirrups were gilded and of Turkish shape. The horse was covered with a gold-embroidered sky-blue saddlecloth and the bridle, appropriately, was truly magnificent. Murat's entourage, of course, was also rich and brilliant, but it was nowhere close to him. He, the only medieval character of romantic poetry in the French army, outshone them all and in his tight-fitting kurtka, in his yellow or nanking-coloured riding boots, with his ostrich feather ornament proudly swaying around the Polish sammet cap on the Andalusian steed, stood out wonderfully against the heavy gold-embroidered marshals' uniforms and the soldiers of the French army. Napoleon, however, appreciated these distinguishing elements of his brother-in-law, who, like a knight of the Round Table, like a modern paladin of love and honour, shone with his dark eye and long hair among the heroes who surrounded the Emperor. Murat was, as mentioned above, the soul of French cavalry, a true Chevalier reminiscent of the Troubadours, with all the charm of romanticism, all the courage, daring and bravery of earlier times, as graceful as it is sublime in legends and fairy tales.
I’d say Murat, in those final days of the empire, still managed to get himself some fans.

18. a memorable meal this year?
oh!! I have a really good one!!
okay so my friend Chelsea was nearby accepting an award, and I only found out like a day or two before that she was gonna be so close (we live several states apart), but! we managed to work it out so we could drive up and have breakfast with her and her sister. so we went to a Lebanese restaurant and had breakfast family-style, and it was delicious and a lot of fun, and then afterwards we had Turkish coffee at the place next door <3
I hadn't seen Chelsea in person since her book launch in May 2022, so this was a memorable meal in more ways than one!

1997 Dublin - Number 2 - ƞebnem Paker & Etnic - "Dinle"
youtube
From 1985 to 1997 inclusive, every year that TĂŒrkiye were in Eurovision they were drawn to perform in the first half. They performed every year in that period except 1994. That's 12 years in a row in which the random draw placed TĂŒrkiye in the first ten songs. In 1996 ƞebnem Paker also represented TĂŒrkiye and finished 12th having sung first. This year she drew the death slot. Second. And there are now televoters who are highly running order biased.
It feels wrong.
Despite this, ƞebnem Paker & Etnic with Dinle managed to score 121 points and finish third. TĂŒrkiye's best ever Eurovision result by an absolutely huge margin. That includes getting points from all the televoters and a huge 12 from Germany - although I'm guess that's one of the first ever cases of diaspora voting at Eurovision. It won ƞarkı YarÄ±ĆŸması 1997 by getting 71% of all the points available. The song is that strong.
It's much more authentically Turkish that her previous song. Like Marianna Zorba singing the Greek entry this year, she's broken out the zills and is backed with traditional instrumentation including tambur, kudĂŒm and a ney flute. It has an insistent, seductive rhythm that drives it along and draws you in. ƞebnem sings about a mysterious love she's hunting for, although she doesn't know his name nor his face - in fact she's not met him yet - the girl's gotta have it.
Dinle frequently tops polls of Eurovision fans naming their favourite song from 1997. In the most recent ESC radio top 250, it finished as the 58th best Eurovision song of all time, just behind Dancing Lasha Tumbai. It's not often included in the compilation clips the general public get shown when broadcasters need a Eurovision show, but it remains a treasure beloved by the Eurovision faithful.
It's even more than that - this is the song that demonstrates what good composition rooted in the rhythms, arrangements and styles of native music can do. Ireland did it a few years previously, but this is the one that says, look, it's not just Celticness that works, whatever your cultural identity, you can show it off and Europe will love it.
Any country with TĂŒrkiye's previous results and draw history wouldn't be blamed for feeling that Western Europe treated them as little more than a novelty every year. An essential part of Eurovision, but not one to be taken seriously. Dinle made everyone sit up and notice. It showed every other country and culture in Europe that they could be themselves. They could do and try anything. I have so much respect for ƞebnem Paker & Etnic for this song.

Random facts about my(our) Commanders. This time dealing with foods and cooking.
Jynn - Great cook, learned from both parents and sides. Pretty flexible. Could be a chef if she wants to. Fairly open to most dishes but has a hard "no" certain meats, meals, etc.
Thaddeus - Decent, but mainly good at cooking Greek, Iranian, and Turkish dishes. A little too spoiled by family gets him picky at times but mostly grew out of that in the military. Cousins love to bring that up whenever they crossed paths due to joint training.
Kamon - Learned from his mom and family like a sponge so pretty good... when he's in the mood to do it. Otherwise hits that enough to survive with whatever he has available courtesy of the time he lived with his not-so-great dad and step-mom. Got very used to eating terrible to burnt food and relearned food has taste when he finally managed to move out. Constantly surprised fellow engineers and motorpool crew when he was able to combine random food into something that was edible and pretty tasty.
Elli - Okay to enough to survive because of a messed up palette courtesy of her terrible mother. Though great at making breakfast-related dishes(for nicer siblings) and is a favorite of hers. Especially Belgian style-waffles with lots of fresh fruit. Actually one of the few sweet-ish dishes can stomach, otherwise can't stomach sweet dishes. Also hates Italian dishes with a burning passion to spite her mother.

H'ohhhhhhhh, such boldness!
Tumblr media
ă…€A stranger approaching in demand of a gift? My, convenient timing, he must say. He liked that. The person's courteous declaration wasn't a part of his long foretelling list but it sure was a situation worth transmuting darting chuckle-snort rather than keeping contingent perplexion weirdly lingering.
ă…€The cadence of unpretentious sequence to extent coming from the suspicious manager welcomes with an amplifying smile he could never mend to wear. ă…€" A gift, you say? BUT OF COURSE!! How fortunate for you, dear stranger, I might have exactly something for you to fare stylishly well with, " while still remaining comfortably positioned in his seat, all Turkish-style, Urahara pointed 'ward something prepared at the top of the front regal. In a gift box waited a very special Christmas sweater and candy cane. ă…€'' This size should be hopefully good for you. ☌☟ ( AYCA AYSIN TURAN , 27 , SHE/HER , CIS WOMAN , CAILLEACH ) - have you seen SAFIYE DEMIRCI?  they’ve been living in afon vale for ALL HER LIFE and they really think they’re safe. people say that they’re ARTISTIC but i heard they’re UNPREDICTABLE. you can usually find them working as a/an FASHION DESIGNER at SELF-EMPLOYED (CREATES LOOKS OUT OF A SMALL SPACE BENEATH HER APARTMENT). they’ve tried hard to keep WHILE THEY WERE AWAY AT DESIGN SCHOOL THEY USED A FORBIDDEN SOUND TO GET AHEAD buried but the truth always comes out. a few things that remind me of them are
silk fabrics hung across cedar dowels near an open window; beautiful patterns drawn on every blank surface; the smell of coffee and cinnamon; a smile that disarms and promises mischief; the sky before dawn when it’s golden and shades of pink, blue, and orange.
basics.
name: safiye demirci
age: 27
gender: cis female
species: cailleach
sexuality: demisexual / demiromantic
occupation: fashion designer
hometown: afon vale
ethnicity: caucasian (turkish)
languages: english, turkish, french, italian
physical.
height: 5'6"
build: lithely curvy
hair: dark brown, left long and flowing around her shoulders, often perfectly managed
eyes: stormy-blue, almond-shaped
tattoos: a cross on her collarbone.
piercings: twice on each earlobe
personal style: fashionable but comfortable; wears a lot of her own designs and tends towards softer colors and fabrics. when she needs to dress up she goes to the nines and creates a whole new look every time and, if asked, will try to replicate (to a degree) said outfit for clients who want to visit the space she sells out of beneath her apartment. understated gold jewelry and subtle makeup is usually a go-to, focusing mostly on her eyes.
psychological.
positive: artistic, creative, upbeat
negative: unpredictable, distractable, flighty
MBTI: enfp
enneagram: the enthusiast
temperament: sanguine
family.
father: tbd demirci (open on main)
mother: tbd demirci (open on main)
siblings: beren dimirci (youngest sister), tbd demirci (triplet with saf), tbd demirci (triplet with saf)
headcanons.
her use of forbidden sounds wasn't out of lack of talent but lack of confidence. she is actually a very good designers and could have probably succeeded without, which somehow makes it worse.
she has an aversion to the smell of fresh cut grass, it gives her a headache.
she's close to her siblings and will generally always pick up the phone if they call. it isn't that they don't fight but she's pretty attached to them.
she once dressed an entire ensemble for a local play and was one of the most raved about points of the night.
her designs, while never featured on a big stage, have been getting traction as of late and looking to break out. why she's still in afon vale when she wants to be a famous fashion designer is anyone's guess.
she's had two serious relationships, one with a woman and one with a man, the woman having been most recently and the roughest of her break ups.
she's looking for love in all the wrong places.
biography bits.
safiye is the eldest of the triplets, being born a full minute before the other two. she is the eldest of the demirci children by that merit but no one is counting.
safiye pursued art through most of school, tending to get better grades within creative aspects than academic ones, though she did fairly well in math.
safiye had never left afon vale until she decided to go to college, but has since then visited several places like france and turkey.
she graduated from design school with offers from several firms but decided to go her own route and return to her home in afon vale.
tbd
connections.
best friend
friends, misc.
potential love interests, slow burn, will they / won't they fun (bonus if taboo)
her two exes
people who buy her designs
childhood friends / those who know the demirci legacy
someone from design school who knows about what happened an will leverage it over her

The Sun of Art by Ecem Dalgakiranlar
Tumblr media
Zeki MĂŒren, a prominent Turkish cultural icon, was known for his distinctive voice, flamboyant style, and captivating stage presence, rising to fame as a singer, composer, and actor, with a career spanning several decades, leaving a lasting impact on Turkish music and culture. He was the Edith Piaf of Turkey, with the “velvet voice”. The singer of “rakı tables”. The David Bowie of Turkey, with the extravagant costumes that had their one names.
When people were buying their first televisions, they were asking "Will Zeki MĂŒren see us too?". New Year’s special programs opened with his peaceful (and super queer) “new year messages”. He got the title "The Sun of Art”. But he was also a contradictory and complicated person in a contradictory and complicated country. Grandmas were saying “he was such a gentleman with a sensitive heart”, but trans women of his generation describe him as cruel and jealous. When he died, he left a very big legacy and so many gossips. In recent years, people from that period started talking about him more openly. In this event Ecem Dalgakiranlar will present Zeki MĂŒren’s music clips, scenes from old movies, tv programs and “new media”. They will tell their own story of how they met with this queer icon when they were a child, along with insights from their grandmother and the local queer community. We will look towards the story of a country’s queer culture, oppression and resistance in this very special event at the week of The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. This event aspires to be the first of a series of presentations titled “Queer Cultures Beyond Borders” that will focus on different popular figures or cultural products, wishing to pose the question ‘what if different queer cultures watched each other's old movies, and came to know each other’s queer icons?” Can such events disrupt east/west dichotomies, resist cultural colonialism and the building of queer cultures that see themselves only in western figures and aesthetics?
Ecem Dalgakiranlar: Multi-talented person, a migrant, queer, activist, journalist, artist, graphic designer who has been living in Athens for some years. * Video clips will be with English and Greek subtitles (if we can manage), presentation: English ** There will be a box for donations for our unemployed migrant presenter. Date: 19.05 Sunday – 18:00 Adress: AMOQA - Manousogianni 6

Day 54 - 29 October - Vanadzor > Gyumri
Checked out and walked down to the bus stop. We took a Marshrutka bus which was very packed with at least 4 people standing and one guy on a little stool. The bus was not that long but quite uncomfortable. The bus kept stopping in what looked like the town center, and one time there were other busses around and I got out with other people but just as I was getting my bag from the back it drove off and I managed to get in as I think Nin said to stop. I was in the bad books with the driver because when we were in the bus station eventually (that was a. Bit further away than we would have liked) he saw that I had accidentally slightly opened the door when he drove off and it wasn’t completely closed (although it wouldn’t have opened and didn’t). He made me hold things that he was taking from the back to the main bus. There was also a mysterious box that had a kind of animal in it that mad a sound a couple of times when we went over bumps but we never saw inside it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Walked to our B&B. Gyumri is a very pretty stone city that was damaged very badly in an earthquake in 1988 which they are still rebuilding from. It used to be called Alexandrapol and is very close to the Turkish border and Kars. It has a Russian army base which is there to protect the Armenian frontier. It is interesting to see the buildings and imagine what Kars would have looked like before they tore down all the Armenian houses (although the Russian houses in Kars are quite similar).
We checked in went to dogunut place called Ponchik Monchik which was very nice that we had 2 each, I had them stuffed with crema. We wrote and then mailed some postcards which were very cheap! We then went to a church in the main square that was damaged in the earthquake and subsequently rebuilt, which was really nice. We then went to a gallery of two sisters who were artists during the soviet time who had donated lots of their artwork to the city. They were slightly different in their styles but very vibrant and colourful and often quite different to what you would expect from socialist realism and soviet art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then went to a cafe called herbs and honey, that does load of tea nice blends, including herbal ones like origano and thyme. They had a great playlist of late 90s women singers of women fronted bands like Sixpence None the Richer, Natalie Imbrulia and Garbage.
After that we went to a fish restaurant near the Russian military base that has a fish farm attached to it. Walked there using google maps which took us down backstreets as it was getting dark which was a bit weird as there were no streetlights or paved roads and it looked as if we were going behind peoples houses. The restaurant was also down a long path on a terrible road which added to the randomness of it. Also I wasn’t sure if we would turn a corner and take a wrong turn onto the Russian base. We then got there and were given Russian only menus which we tried to translate before the waiter brought over an English menu which made me feel slightly less out of place, considering the main clientele seem to be Russian soldiers and their families. We got some trout dolma which were really nice, and then a whole bbq trout which I was very full after. They also had a honey beer which was also good. We got the restaurant to book us a taxi home which we preferred to walking for an hour on main roads breathing in car emissions and wood smoke fumes.
Day 55 - 30 October - Gyumri
We went on a run, but we didn’t want to do a route that involved loads of it roads, so we just around the place till we got to 5k. After that we went for breakfast at that place Herbs and Honey that was okay but not amazing for food, although their teas are nice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that we went to the spa in the town that was part of the Raddison but was in an old boathouse in the town. It was really nice and had an amazing domed stone roof and all the things you would want in a spa, including a russian sauna which I hadn’t been in before. Unsurprisingly they call a hammam an oriental baths rather than a Turkish bath.
After this we went for a drink in a cafe in a park which was nice but got a bit cold. We then walked around looking for a place for dinner but didn’t really find anything so went to this place called Gyumri express that brought drinks to the table by toy train! Of course walking back we went past 2 nice restaurants, which we said we would go to lunch at at least one of them!
Day 56 - 31 October - Gyumri > Tbilisi Airport
We did a shortish run to the Mother Armenia statue which is a really interesting soviet era statue on the outskirts of town. When we got back we packed up and left our bags in the room. We originally wanted to go to this ceramics museum but it looked pretty closed so we went for a tea then to this really nice restaurant for lunch that we had walked past the night before. I had meat and vegetables baked in lavash which was very tasty. We then had a cheesecake and a feature of our trip to Gyumri that I want to take with me, teas made from herbs you would consider savoury like origano or thyme.
Tumblr media
Went back to the B&B and got our taxi, it was quite a comfortable Mercedes, my bag had to go in the front seat because both our bags were too small for the boot The car smelled quite like petrol due to the LPG retrofit every car seems to have here. We went through Vanadzur, which made us think it might have been easier to go to Gyumri first than there but oh well. I got through the border very easily this time which was good! We had to go through the outskirts of Tbilisi which looked fairly normal but I guess there is loads of stuff simmering under the surface. We then went to our airport hotel which is a very comfortable Ibis and had dinner and chilled out. They had the Liverpool Brighton Carabau Cup game so I watched that.
