Two of the best exponents of boom bap show that they can do far more than dusty beats and tracks “for the heads”. But hip-hop is the thread that runs through it, with Earl Sweatshirt, Ab-Soul, Action Bronson and Danny Brown all featuring. Dancehall stars such as Vybz Kartel and Popcaan feature, as do punk rockers Wavves and TV on the Radio frontman turned actor Tunde Adebimpe. The mini-documentary about the making of the album is inadvertently hilarious – for anyone who has seen the “making of Cleaver” extra on Sopranos DVDs, it’s in that ballpark – and also reveals the bigger scale of the project. The link between the two has been well noted and already produced original tracks by Hudson Mohawke and Flying Lotus, who’ve contributed to soundtracks, but now the Alchemist and Oh No have created a whole original album for the PC release of GTA 5. Grand Theft Auto and rap go together like teenagers and ridiculously violent video games. Arguably, he’s upstaged by Flair, who is sampled throughout and mouths off about other wrestlers not liking the fact he wears custom-made boots and how he singlehandedly helped spread the gospel of wrestling. The free wiz loops, samples and sounds listed here have been kindly uploaded by other users. It works, too, giving him room to show that he can do chill as well as hectic. Out goes the cacophonous din of RTJ’s production, and in comes the more laidback sample-driven backing. Starting with some vintage WWF promo footage from the nature boy himself, Ric Flair, it’s odd to hear Killer Mike on a more straightforward hip-hop track.

Killer Mike will be taking a break from his touring duties with Run the Jewels soon when he follows in the footsteps of Lil B and delivers a lecture at MIT, but he’s dropped a belated video for his 2011 track, Ric Flair. It’s also delivered a huge international hit off the back of a huge international film (more on that in a moment). The last month or so has seen a run of pretty odd and off-kilter releases from some of hip-hop’s most iconoclastic artists.

Tunde Adebimpe, the leader singer of TV on the Radio (among other things), dropped an outstanding new song last week called “People.” The song will remind fans of the TVoTR glory days: an amalgamation of tense melodies, strung out guitars, mechanical beats and Adebimpe’s powerful, thoughtful vocals. The song is very much of the moment, with cheers for sisters and brothers in the streets and…

Riot Fest Day 3 (Sunday September 17, 2017) After another long hot day on Saturday, I couldn’t quite do the early arrival on Sunday. Although I had a few bands on my early schedule, none were “have to see” bands, so my goal was to get to the grounds in time for That Dog. Temps today were a bit cooler although more humid, but the mostly cloudy skies helped alleviate the intense sunlight from the first two days.
That Dog (that dog.) (Riot Stage) For the third day in a row, I had impeccable timing, arriving at the Riot Stage for the beginning of That Dog’s set. They played their entire album Retreat From The Sun (20th anniversary), an appropriately titled album for the hottest weather Riot Fest I’ve ever attended. Retreat From The Sun is a great album and was so cool to be able to hear it all live. Playing the album at the request of Riot Fest, Anna Waronker noted that they never envisioned themselves playing the entire album in sequence and that it was a good challenge preparing for this opportunity. And she is just a marvelous front woman. She was very personable with the audience and very chatty. She talked between every song, stressed about getting the full album in the allotted time, and as a way to encourage her band mates to start the next song, she frequently turned to them and said, “I can keep going!” It was a real pleasure seeing this band and there were a lot of hard core fans there that were just having a great time dancing and singing the lyrics. (Top photo.)
The Voluptuous Horror Of Karen Black (The Heather Own Stage) I really do enjoy the theatrical bands at Riot Fest, and that was part of what attracted me to this band. I was not familiar with them so I had downloaded their album The Anti-Naturalists. I was a bit skeptical, but it’s actually a decent Punk album, mostly Hard Core with a bit of Garage Punk. Kembra Pfahler is the front woman of the band and she is also a filmmaker and performance artist, hence the stage theatrics. She was covered in red body paint and another band member, a quasi back up singer, was covered in green body paint and wearing the biggest wig you can imagine. The female bass player was dressed head to toe in leather. The band is rounded out with a drummer and guitar player who got in some nice riffs. I believe he is also Kembra’s ex-husband and he paused a couple of the times during the show to take selfies with Kembra with the audience as the backdrop. Kembra is also the sister of Adam Pfahler, drummer for Jawbreaker, who was headlining later that evening. The show was entertaining. Kembra got everyone dancing and pleased the crowd by throwing out numerous band t-shirts throughout the show. (Second two photos.)
The Orwells (Rise Stage) I did not have this band on my schedule because I have seen them twice before, but they were still playing as I walked by their stage and paused to catch the last few minutes. I like this band and being from my hometown, I’m always proud to see them on stage. (Photo next to the truck.)
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Roots Stage) This was the band I came to see on Sunday. A nine piece Ska Punk band in matching suits that played an amazing show. The horns are the hook and the pace of the music gets you dancing. Singer Dicky Barrett (who is also the announcer on Jimmy Kimmel Live) is an entertaining front man and a powerful singer. There is a big crowd for this show and it was easy to see and hear why. (Photo below The Orwells.)
Built To Spill (Rise Stage) Played all of their 1999 album Keep It Like A Secret. Excellent rockin’ set! Some very nice guitar solos using the wah-wah pedal and sounding a bit like Frank Zappa.
Pennywise (Roots Stage) I had intended to see Minus The Bear at this time, but needed a little food and rest so I headed to my favorite spot to chill, which is the small hill across from the Rise Stage. There was a 30 minute gap on the rise stage so I was able to hear the first half of the Pennywise set from the Roots Stage. It was enjoyable. Good Melodic/Skate Punk.
TV On The Radio (Rise Stage) This band had flown under my radar but my niece Megan suggested I see them and I was glad I did. They are a six piece Indie band with a diverse sound spanning several musical genres. They sounded great and lead singer Tunde Adebimpe is excellent as a front man and very personable with the audience. I watched about 30 minutes of their set and then decided to move around and sample some other bands. (Photo below The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.)
Dinosaur Jr. (Riot Stage) I went to the first 30 minutes of their set. They played their entire album You’re Living All Over Me (1987, 30th anniversary). I generally like the band and that album but I’m not a big DJ fan as their music all kind of sounds to same to me. What I do like about their sound is the heavy and distorted guitar that is pervasive throughout their music. They had a huge crowd for their set. (Photo below TV On The Radio.)
Best Coast (Radicals Stage) Continuing on with my sampling, I stopped for a few minutes to hear this Indie band. They have a very nice sound, leaving me with the desire to explore their music further.
GWAR (The Heather Owen Stage) I had to get me a little GWAR. They are a theatrical Metal band and they wear outrageous sci-fi costumes, have battles on stage and spray the audience with fake blood. They also have a great sense of humor. They play at Riot Fest every year and I’ve never seen an entire set, but they are fun to watch in small doses. This remote area around the small stage was as packed as I had ever seen it.
M.I.A. (Rise Stage) My original plan was to catch part of M.I.A. and then head over to see Paramore. However, the rapping, the dancing and the light show all got me hooked and I ended up staying for the entire set. I can’t say that M.I.A. is something I would listen to outside of Riot Fest, but it was sure a fun show. Maya is captivating, and the interaction with her co-vocalist, the dancers and the DJ made the show flow with compelling spontaneity. In retrospect, it wasn’t great music, but I couldn’t help but get sucked into the party atmosphere. It was a little strange when everyone left the stage with 20 minutes of set time remaining. However, they all returned and fulfilled the remaining time. I’m not sure why Maya chose to do that. Perhaps it was her idea of an encore. However, encores are not something that are done at Riot Fest or probably any other music festival, so it seemed rather odd. At the end, she brought up several people on stage which I presumed were friends and family members of the musical group. It was cool too see these people all joining that party and dancing on stage. The early autumn sunset along with the summer weather added to the ambience of the show. Overall, a different but exciting experience for me at Riot Fest. (Photo below Dinosaur Jr.)
Jawbreaker (Riot Stage) Riot Fest is well known for coaxing splintered bands into reuniting, (Misfits and The Replacements, e.g.) Jawbreaker was their coup for this year. Jawbreaker broke up in 1996 and Riot Fest was able to bring them out of retirement after a 21 year lay off. They are a band that had flown under my radar as Emo is not my favorite Punk genre. (I’m more of a Garage and Hard Core listener.) However, as I started listening to their music prior to the festival, I came to like them. As a power trio, I think their sound had a bit more of a rocking, edgier sound than other Emo or Pop Punk bands I have listened to. Also, with a lot of Emo and Pop Punk, to me it often sounds like the vocal melody and the guitar chords are going in different directions. With Jawbreaker, the vocal melody and power chords are very well synchronized giving their music a more familiar and traditional Rock and Pop music sound. Being the closing band for the festival, they had an enormous crowd. Prior to their set, given the long weekend, I gave myself the option to bail out early if I was tired or not really getting into their music. (As was the case the last two years for closing acts Misfits and Modest Mouse.) However, I really enjoyed Jawbreaker and temperatures had finally moderated to the upper 60’s, so I stayed for the entire set, soaking in the very last drops of this year’s wonderful Riot Fest. (Photo below M.I.A.)

3. I've already heard "Turn It On" as a single, but I'll add some different thoughts than my initial reaction, I guess: while I'm still not blown-away-excited about the inclusion of banjo [on a Sleater-Kinney song, or any other song - sorry, but I already listen to country music by women, so this isn't jaw-dropping to me], the banjo plus the silkiness of Margo Price's voice adds another dimension to "Turn It On" that makes it SUPER successful as an S-K cover. "Turn It On" is almost unanimously one of Sleater-Kinney's sexiest songs, so the way Price sings it and the slower, more seductive rhythm of the song (definitely assisted, if not actually driven, by the banjo) appeals to the original version's intent and more. Heh heh heh, had to make an innuendo somewhere. IT WAS CALLED FOR.
4. Okay, I'm gonna say it: WOW. LIKE, WOW. I AM SO GRATEFUL THIS COVER EXISTS. Not only is this is the way you do a good cover (performing it in your own style so that it does not sound like a replica of the original WHICH HAS, OBVIOUSLY, ALREADY BEEN DONE*), but GOD, TUNDE ADEBIMPE'S COVER OF "THE DRAMA YOU'VE BEEN CRAVING" IS SUCH A GOOD SLEATER-KINNEY COVER. This cover, with its excellent use of low, rumbling drumbeats and a recurring tone that reminds me an awful lot of an old flip phone message tone/ringtone, speaks perfectly to a foreboding drama - both in the low drumbeats (visual media has taught us that sound often precedes a dramatic scene, creating tension/anticipation) and even the old ringtone sound calls back to NONSTOP TEXTING/CALLING DRAMAAAAAAAAA. Not to mention the 'technical'/literal machine sounds of the music let's hear it for the good ol' drum machine! 😂 ...no, but really, it REALLY DOES serve a genuine purpose here! ...sorry if I sound like a geek who never listens to hip-hop and doesn't know what a beat or a sample is. I do actually listen to hip-hop and am familiar, sound-wise but certainly not technically at all, with beats and samples. I'm just being a geek and referencing one of my favorite rock musicians (and even the pace that it's set at) complementing the entire song, but especially the second verse. Adebimpe really said: 'So it's drama you all have been craving? Oh, I'll give you drama.'
Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album
I've been really excited about this album even though it took me almost a week to finally listen to it so mutuals, please forgive me for giving my almost-live written reaction to every song.
I basically have never listened to any of St. Vincent's music before so I'm wholly unfamiliar with her sound or what's 'normal' for her approach to her music (or covers), so for now, my first impression of her cover of "Dig Me Out" is that I don't like it (but, then again, the original "Dig Me Out" is a tough choice of song to improve upon; and to be honest, most of Sleater-Kinney's music is like that. SORRY, BUT THEY'RE REALLY IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN THAT'S BASICALLY UNTOUCHABLE), but I feel like it's VERY cleverly done in sounding, apologies for my lack of any technical knowledge or terminology, purposefully muffled, as though the song is buried (hence not just responding to the call of "dig me out" but audibly expressing what it sounds like to need to be dug out or you'll never fully hear and get to appreciate what is being buried). …like I said, very cleverly done, and pretty true, I think, to Sleater-Kinney's intention - I'll give her that. Props!
#*I really should not have to say that especially taking away time from my impression of Adebimpe's cover but#unfortunately Wilco kinda proved that it bears repeating that covers should not sound exactly like the original. -_-#also if you read that and are reading these tags the rock musician I referenced was Mike McCready. I like to poke fun at my faves. :)#ANYWAY I will be purchasing this album on CD ASAP so I can put 'The Drama You've Been Craving' on repeat shamelessly omfg#Dig Me In covers album

Check Out The Best New Albums From January
New year, new music. The only silver lining about a terrible political situation is that great music tends to rise from times like these. Tons of long awaited new albums are set to be released this year. For now, check out the Best New Albums from January 2017:
Run The Jewels – Run The Jewels 3
(Album Of The Month)
youtube
Few groups can accomplish three truly great albums in their career. Run The Jewels, however, has done so with their first three releases in a row. This time the duo composed of Killer Mike and El-P have dropped arguably their best material yet. RTJ3 was surprisingly released a few weeks early on Christmas Day, for free as always, but the album was officially made available for purchase on it’s original date of January 13th. El-P’s post-apocalyptic trap b-boy production remains a signature force as the two MCs trade raps with effortless skills. Call Ticketron shows off Killer Mike’s brutal flow and wordplay over a bass heavy beat that’ll rip through your speakers. Talk To Me, the album’s first single, continues on their tradition of adrenaline rap that will force you into a mosh pit.
The guest spots, from Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio) to Trina, are few and about as diverse as you’d expect from the combination of Mike and El. Kamasi Washington adds the sax to Thursday In The Danger Room, which is the duo’s most personal track yet. El touches on his feelings watching a friend slowly succumb to a fatal illness, while Mike speaks on forgiving the man who killed his friend during an armed robbery. It’s verses like this that make Run The Jewels stand out above most artists in today’s hip hop landscape. Zach de la Rocha is back once again for another blistering 16 to close the album out on Kill Your Masters.
Run The Jewels 3 is a call to action for a revolution, all while promoting respect, maturity, togetherness and debauchery. This isn’t a kumbaya sing-a-long rap album, these topics are presented in the most hardcore, thumping package you’ll hear this year. With every album RTJ manages to step it up notch and once again with RTJ3 it seems like they’ve taken their unbridled chemistry one step further to create one of the most relevant and necessary music of their careers.
Stand out tracks: Talk To Me, Panther Like A Panther, Thursday In The Danger Room
Cloud Nothings – Life Without Sound
youtube
Frontman Dylan Baldi said this album would be his “version of new age music.” Albeit a gross over exaggeration, this is Cloud Nothings’ most mellow record. Know that they haven’t bitched out and turned into Coldplay, but they have ironed out their sound so it’s not a constant stream of punk infused chaos. Life Without Sound is their most melodic album so far and finds the trio introducing a 4th member and an additional guitar that enhances the album’s sound.
Their singles, Modern Act and Internal World. highlight their newer cleaner music while retaining memorable hooks and Baldi’s cryptic lyrics (which might split their fan base). One of the album’s best tracks, Enter Entirely, manages to successfully blend both new and old styles better than the singles did. The album’s last three tracks come closer to what we’ve come to expect from previous Cloud Nothings outings, especially the closer (Realize My Fate) which is a slow 6 minute burn that’s marked by Baldi’s hoarse vocals. Whether you’re a new fan, or a loyal follower, Life Without Sound is a solid listen from top to bottom, and marks the further growth of a very talented band.
Stand out tracks: Up To The Surface, Darkened Rings, Enter Entirely
Nick Grant – Return Of The Cool
youtube
When I first heard Nick Grant’s 88, his debut mixtape released last year, there were signs of a very skilled rapper that still needed to find his own voice. Often through out that tape I found his sound too similar to that of other rappers. However, fast forward less than 12 months later and Grant has showed a trait that is rarely seen in hip hop: rapid artistic growth. Return Of The Cool is Nick Grant’s debut album and he set the mark high for future efforts. Everything from beat choice, flows and lyrics are light years ahead of his previous project.
On the Dilla-esque Gotta Be More, accompanied by BJ The Chicago Kid, Grant proclaims “N****s ain’t rapping lately, guess I’m trapped in the 80’s.” A similar concept is applied on The Sing Along as Grant shuns the record industry for it’s lack of originality and the disposable artists that settle for it: “Need of revenue, please never let em Jerry Heller you/ As the regret screams, I pray that the weed settles you/ Nothing is worse than having it and then losing it/ The hunger starts fading and then you become cool with it.”
If you haven’t checked out his appearance on the Late Show With Colbert, make sure you do as he performs another album stand out, Get Up along with WatchTheDuck. Nick Grant’s has shown he cares about improving his craft in order to rise above early comparisons. His long term career will benefit because of it as everyone is just starting to really take notice of the rising rap star.
Stand out tracks: Drug Lord Couture, The Sing Along, Get Up
Leopold and His Fiction – Darling Destroyer
youtube
Vocalist Daniel James has received comparisons to Jack White for years now and thanks to the new album he will most likely accrue some more. Leopold and His Fiction’s Darling Destroyer seems like the true culmination of their sound. It’s a polished garage blues-rock album that takes elements from their previous releases and distills them in some whiskey barrels. This is also their cleanest and best engineered album which makes it even more enjoyable than any of their previous projects.
The mood is set as Cowboy opens up the album and it encapsulates what Darling Destroyer is all about with it’s high energy riff driven blues-rock. I’m Caving In is a gorgeous vintage rock track that contains influences of old Zeppelin, as well as early Aerosmith. Darling Destroyer displays James at his most dominant vocal performance in his career and the band sounds more cohesive than ever.
Stand out tracks: Cowboy, I’m Caving In, Saturday
Sheer Mag – Compilation LP
youtube
If you’ve never heard of Sheer Mag, I can’t blame you but now it’s a good time to start. The Philly DIY rock outfit prides themselves on having no social media presence whatsoever, besides their SoundCloud page. Not only that, but none of their music is available on streaming services. The only way to get your hands on their three past releases is on their Bandcamp site, in which you can stream and/or purchase their three 7″ EPs on vinyl. Compilation LP groups a remastered version these three projects into one album, which is once again available exclusively on Bandcamp. This compilation serves as a primer to their debut album which will be released later this year.
Sheer Mag is an in your face throwback mixture of 70s rock, punk and soul. You’ll go through the first rawer sounding four tracks that defined their style and hear them evolve in real time as the album progresses. The highlights occur in the last 2/3rds of the album, as Sheer Mag really hits their stride with material from their 2nd and 3rd EPs. Tina Halladay’s screeching vocals reverberate over Hard Lovin’ and Nobody’s Baby. The band shines on Fan The Flames and Can’t Stop Fighting, songs which are able to project each member’s individual talent.
Trust me, stop sleeping on Sheer Mag. They’re one of the truly rare talents in today’s rock scene. Hopefully when their debut album drops later this summer, they become more accessible so more people can appreciate and acknowledge that great rock is far from dead.
Stand out tracks: Fan The Flames. Can’t Stop Fighting, Nobody’s Baby
