Made a new writing playlist/possible soundtrack to the film I’m writing (The Undeclared Life of Marilynn Baxter).
It’s a coming of age film about a college freshman trans girl (Marilynn) who isn’t sure of her sexuality or college career. She has a lesbian best friend (Persephone) who’s secretly in love with her. Marilynn eventually starts dating Jocelyn, a college junior. Persephone is silently jealous, but is really supportive. It begins as a love triangle and then becomes a love quadrangle.
So it’s about Marilynn navigating her sexuality and finding what she likes/wants/needs, dealing with her first relationship and breakup, dealing with college and trying to find the right major for her, and generally just juggling her social and school lives.
It’s about Persephone dealing with her long silent inner struggle of being in love with her best friend but being too afraid to do anything about it because Marilynn was presumably ace and now because she’s in a relationship. It’s about her dealing with supporting her best friend even though it’s killing her seeing her with another girl. It’s about her dealing with her flimsy and hollow love life of mostly one-night stands.
It’s about Jocelyn dealing with school and her new girlfriend, and (SPOILERS) eventually her cheating on said girlfriend.
(SPOILERS)
It’s about an afab genderqueer college junior and “other person” Devon and them dealing with dating Jocelyn and then finding out she has a girlfriend. It’s about them dealing with leaving Jocelyn and hurting after the relationship ends. It’s about them struggling with feeling guilty about being “the other person”.
It’s also about a polyamorous lesbian couple who are friends with Marilynn and Persephone who are secondary characters for the B plot. It’s about them dating each other and working and living their jobs. And it’s also about one of them finding a new girlfriend and her joining their throuple.
Marilynn and Persephone get together in the end. ☺️

Marilynn watched Persephone walk across the room. She was tip-toeing in her panties, trying to be quiet.
She reached the door and turned the knob. There was a creak. But not from the door. It came from behind Persephone. She turned around to see Marilynn standing there, with nothing on.
“You’re cute when you’re trying to be stealthy.” Marilynn smirked at Persephone.
Persephone let go of the doorknob and smiled back at Marilynn.
“I was going to go pee. I didn’t wanna wake you.”
Marilynn walked closer to her girlfriend and shrugged her bare shoulders.
“Eh. I was up already. Couldn’t really sleep.”
If you're reading this...

Me trying to write the scene where Jocelyn and Marilynn meet. The writing style changed a bit from that last scene. I don't know...
She’d just come out of her Intro to Philosophy class when she bumped into her. Literally. Bumped into. Like they do in movies. Luckily nobody dropped any notebooks or glasses or anything.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Marilynn said as she put her hands up and stepped back.
Jocelyn looked up and pushed her headphones down to her neck. “No, my fault, I wasn't looking.”
And then she looked. And she kept looking as her hands fumbled with her headphones. One hand slipped and accidentally hit Marilynn’s hand.
“Oh shit,” Jocelyn said as Marilynn laughed and put her hands in her hoodie’s front pocket. “Sorry,” Jocelyn said while corralling her hands under her backpack straps. “Again, sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Marilynn said as she took one hand out of her pocket to rudely point at Jocelyn. Her eyebrows scrunched together. “…Jocelyn, right?”
Jocelyn’s hands erupted from their restraints, nearly hitting Marilynn’s hand again before she pulled it back. “Yeah, and you’re Marilynn?! Novo High, right?” She meekly smiled while shoving her hands into her jeans pockets, now.
“Excuse me,” someone behind Marilynn huffed.
“Oh, sorry,” Marilynn said as she stepped aside. Rebecca followed her. They both started walking down the hall, now.
“Yeah, yeah!” Marilynn said as she looked to Jocelyn. She then put her right hand on her messenger bag, holding onto the strap.

Here’s a storyboard/comic of the first scene from my movie/whatever “The Undeclared Life of Marilynn Baxter”. (I used stock photos to make the different movie posters in the background and for the characters since I can’t actually draw comics.)
Marilynn is a trans woman in her freshman year of college. She has a lesbian best friend named Persephone who’s in unrequited/secret love with Marilynn. The story follows Marilynn as she navigates college life and relationships, trying to find herself. She meets and starts dating a girl, Jocelyn, who’s a year older.
Long story short, it’s basically a lesbian love quadrangle.
I’ve been working on the story since 2006. Persephone’s original name was Rebecca Philippa Ann Tollingworth. But when I came out as trans in 2016 I took that name for myself and changed her to Persephone Alexandra Rhodes.

TULOMB Additions - 11/24/17
“Does she know you’re trans?” Persephone asked between bites. Her and Marilynn were at Denny’s the night after their first day of college. Persephone was a sucker for their pancakes.
“Yeah... it came up.” Marilynn was smiling at her food, poking at it with her fork. She looked up at Persephone. “She’s going to join the LGBTQ Club too!”
“Nice. I can’t wait for the meeting tomorrow. I wonder how many people will be there? Maybe I can score a girlfriend!” Persephone smiled wide. “It’s been a hot minute since I’ve had one.”
Her bravado was false, of course. She wished Mars would be her girl, but she was still too afraid to say anything. And now she was jealous of this Jocelyn person.
But why? Marilynn never once let on she was into girls, did she? The smile on her face seemed to say it all though. Marilynn was smitten and Persephone was just a poor lost kitten.

Here's that gay scene I was talking about:
She’d just come out of her Intro to Philosophy class when she bumped into her. Literally. Bumped into. Like they do in movies. Luckily nobody dropped any notebooks or glasses or anything.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Marilynn said as she put her hands up and stepped back.
Jocelyn looked up and pushed her headphones down to her neck. “No, my fault, I wasn’t looking.”
Jocelyn followed her. They both started walking down the hall.
“Yeah, yeah! Marilynn, that’s me!” Marilynn said as she looked to Jocelyn. She then put her right hand on her messenger bag, holding onto the strap.
“I thought so. I kinda met you at the end-of-school bash at Mikey Sellers’.”
Marilynn scrunched up her nose, “kinda?”
“Yeah. You were singing Rock Band and I was playing beer pong. One of the…”
“You wanna sit?” Marilynn asked as they were passing the student lounge.
“Sure, sure. I have time before my next class.” Jocelyn said with a smile.
Jocelyn and Marilynn sat down on a couch by the windows. Jocelyn played with the hem of her jacket sleeve while Marilynn held her bag in her lap.
“So, beer pong?” Marilynn asked.
Jocelyn snapped out of her stupor and said “oh yeah! So I was playing and I totally overshot the ball…”
Marilynn snapped her fingers and said “and it hit me in the head! I remember that! So I have you to blame for making me get a shitty score.”
Jocelyn smirked at Marilynn. “Yep. My bad. But, hey, at least I won.”
Marilynn shrugged, “Well at least one of us did.”
“So, you liking the school so far?” Jocelyn asked.
Marilynn looked up from focusing on her bag. “Uh, yeah. It’s not so bad. Different than high school but not really by much. How’re you liking it?”
“About the same. Really digging this lounge though. My high school never had anything like this.” She said, sweeping her hand across the room.
“Yeah. My school was really poor. We barely had enough space in our cafeteria for everyone.” Marilynn chuckled. “Lot of fights started in there. Too much ego for such a small place.”
Jocelyn smiled. “I’m really glad I don’t have to deal with all those little shits from my hometown. Much less homophobia here…” She went back to pulling on her sleeve.
Marilynn frowned and said “I’m sorry. People are terrible.”
“Yeah, this is true. But luckily,” she said while turning to smile at Marilynn, “there are some who are pretty great.”
“Pfft. I’m not great. Hell you don’t even know me. I could be a serial killer for all you know,” responded Marilynn with her best menacing look.
Jocelyn rolled her eyes. “Oh definitely. Marilynn is totally a serial killer name.”
Marilynn shoved Jocelyn’s shoulder. “Yeah, I think it’s almost as popular as Jocelyn. Us -lyn(n)s are all about the murder.”
“Hell yeah! Lyn(n)s unite! Glad I’ve met another one.”
Jocelyn grabbed Marilynn’s hand and lifted it up in front of them.
“By our powers combined…”
Marilynn giggled as Jocelyn finished, “we are Captain Lyn(n)et!”
Marilynn shook her head and said, “Wonder Lyn(n)s powers activate!”
Jocelyn, still holding Marilynn’s hand, smirked and said “I like yours better.”
Marilynn chuckled again, “thanks.” She noticed they were still holding hands and blushed. She took hers back and reached into her bag to pull out her notebook. She set it in the table in front of them and then stuck her hand back in the bag, digging for her pencil.
As Marilynn rummaged, Jocelyn picked up her notebook and flipped through it. Marilynn caught her out of the corner of her eye and internally screamed. She snatched the journal back from Jocelyn and held it close to her.
“Sorry,” Jocelyn said with a concerned look on her face. “I’m too nosy for my own good sometimes.”
Marilynn set the notebook down in front of her again and placed the pencil next to it.
“It’s okay… it’s just,” she said while placing her hand on the book, “private. You know? My journal and all.” Then she meekly turned away.
“No, no. I get it! I shouldn’t have gone through it. I was hoping to find some notes on class. You seem much better at this stuff than I am…”
Jocelyn tapped the book and added, “I noticed some drawings in there. The quick glance I got looked pretty sweet. Is it okay if you show me one?”
Marilynn hesitated, tapping her fingers on the table, shaking her leg. “Sure… but, I’m not very good…”
“Pssh, I’ll be the judge of that.”
Marilynn flipped through her journal looking for one of her favorite drawings. It was one of her newer ones: a portrait of her best friend Persephone, beaming smile and piercing eyes.
She turned the notebook toward Jocelyn and Jocelyn actually gasped. She pulled the book closer so she could get a better look. “This… is beautiful, Mari!”
Marilynn grinned. Then she cocked her head. “Mari? I don’t think anyone’s ever called me that before.”
Jocelyn’s view lingered on the drawing for another beat and then handed the book back.
“I hope that’s okay? It just sounded right.”
“No, no. It’s cool, Joss.” She rebutted with a smile.
“Ha, Mari and Joss. I like that.” Jocelyn said while blushing.
Marilynn had heard about Jocelyn a bit. Rumors mostly. Mostly negative ones at that. Like assholes saying she was a “dyke”. Marilynn usually told them to shut up, or to at least refrain from using awful slurs like that. Since she was trans and her best friend was gay, she knew all too well the bigotry and hurt of others.
Marilynn still wasn’t sure about her sexuality, though. She knew her bestie was, as she called herself, “gayer than a double rainbow over a pride parade on the island of Lesbos.” Marilynn always loved when she said stuff like that. It was okay for Persephone to talk that way. She’s a lesbian and only ever makes fun of herself.
Too bad Persephone had to go to Western U instead of here…
She’d considered joining the LGBTQ club at school, but hadn’t pulled the trigger yet. She knew most of the kids at her high school knew she was trans, but with puberty blockers she passed pretty well. She wasn’t sure if she wanted people at college to know just yet. She wanted to try being a “real” girl for a while. (Even if she hated herself for thinking that.)
And now she’d met a new friend who saw her as she’d already wanted to be seen! It filled her with joy and pride.
Marilynn ripped a page out of the journal and closed it, then started writing on the scrap.
Jocelyn twirled her dark straight hair with her finger while chewing her bottom lip. She looked quizzically at Marilynn, watching her write, her pencil gliding across the page.
Marilynn finished and passed the note to Jocelyn.
She looked it over and before really processing what it said she told Marilynn “I love your handwriting. It’s like a musician’s.” She smiled at Marilynn and Marilynn said “thanks” while trying to suppress a smile and look away.
Jocelyn actually paid attention to the note now. It was info on the LGBTQ club and Marilynn’s number.
She looked up to see Marilynn blushing. “Oh!” Jocelyn said. “You’re gay too? I mean, my gaydar has been on the fritz lately so I wasn’t sure.” She nervously laughed and added (not so) under her breath, “but I hoped…”
Flustered, Marilynn said, “uh… no… I…” and fiddled with the string on her hoodie, her leg shaking even harder now.
Jocelyn’s face softened. She scooted closer to Marilynn and put her hand on her leg. It stopped shaking immediately. But the other one took up the job.
“It’s okay sweetie. Nothing to be ashamed of. I promise not to tell anyone.” Jocelyn gave her a sympathetic smile.
It took all of her inner strength to remove Jocelyn’s hand from her leg and then moved a bit further away.
“No, I… was trying to say… I’m not gay. I’m…” her throat caught. Why was this so hard? She’s not ashamed of who she is.
Jocelyn tilted her head and asked, “what? Bi? Pan? Queer? Ace?”
Marilynn fidgeted with her hands in her lap. She muttered “…trans.”
Jocelyn leaned forward a bit and said “what?”
Marilynn repeated herself a little louder this time, “TRANS.”
A boy walking by looked up and over at them. Maybe it was a little too loud…
Marilynn clasped her hand over her mouth, her face beet red now.
Jocelyn’s mouth hung open. Marilynn looked over and was even more mortified. Something she didn’t think was possible.
“I-I’m sorry,” she said as she started gathering her things. She reached for the note but Jocelyn put her hand overtop of Marilynn’s.
“No, no. It’s okay. So you’re trans, so what?” She said in a low whisper. “It’s just I never would’ve guessed. You’re beautiful!”
Marilynn took the compliment with a grain of salt. She knew all about that type of compliment. “You’re pretty for a trans girl”, "You’re too pretty to be trans", all the little transphobic undertones. But… she wasn’t sure if she heard it in Jocelyn’s voice.
She looked up slowly and swallowed. “…thanks.”
“No problem.” Now it was Jocelyn’s turn to fidget and look away. “I was actually hoping you were queer…”
Marilynn hesitated.
“Oh shit,” Jocelyn stated while hitting her forehead with her palm. “I’m sorry. I know some people still hate that word. I use it for myself a lot and constantly forget not to use it for others.”
“No, it’s okay. It’s just, like I said, I’m not gay. Not into girls… sorry.”
Marilynn could see the disappointment cross over Jocelyn’s face, quickly replaced with her normal congenial smile.
“Totes cool. No biggie. Sorry to assume.”
“No, I’m sorry too. I’ve only heard… rumors about you, but I thought you might wanna join the club with me. I’m not good with new people and all and it’s been easy talking to you.” Marilynn smiled.
“Oh, of course! I was already thinking of checking it out, but let’s totally do it together. …er, go the club together, that is!” She giggled and Marilynn followed suit. “Us -lyn(n)s have gotta stick together after all.”

This is the diner scene for The Undisclosed Life of Marilynn Baxter. The story I've been working on and rewriting for nearly 11 years? What do you think? (It's obviously not finished.)

It took me over two hours and constantly drifting off while writing and having to reread the same section a hundred times before I understood it, but I finally copied over the snippet of my TULOMB rewrite into a Word document! Five and a half pages, single spaced.
PS. I’m changing a lot in this draft. For one, you see she’s Persephone now instead of Rebecca. It just didn’t seem right to have the same name. So, she’s Persephone Alexandra Rhodes. She’s a light skinned black girl. She has a darker skinned younger brother.
Marilynn is essentially the same as before, though she’s now a trans girl.
________________________
Persephone found herself staring at Marilynn as she went up to grab their coffee order. She was wearing her curly ginger hair down, with a light blue cardigan covering a pink-blue-and-white striped shirt, a flowy light blue skirt with a white belt, pink tights, and black combat boots.
Persephone was wearing a simple outfit of a jean jacket covered in band pins/patches, over a red flannel, black leggings, and an identical pair of black combat boots.
She had a smile on as she watched her best friend-slash-crush. Persephone’s bright red lips nearly took up her entire tawny face. She brushed her wavy, russet hair out of her eyes. Her smile soon turned to a small frown, as she knew she could never act on her feelings, or else she might lose her friendship. Plus, it’s not like anything would happen anyway, since Marilynn’s straight…
As Persephone was in her little reverie, Marilynn picked up the order of Lattes and turned toward their table. She saw Persephone’s gloomy face, and her own mouth twitched into a half frown.
“Hey chica, what’cha thinkin’ about?” Marilynn asked while sitting down across from Persephone.
That brought Persephone back to Earth. She slid her drink to herself and said, “…stuff.” And then she drank a long pull while looking away.
“Stuff? Ooh, I like stuff!” exclaimed Marilynn. She then took a sip of her drink while waiting for Persephone to respond. Persephone was trying to think of something clever to say, but instead, answered with “oh, normal stuff that normal people think of, you know…”
“Ooh, I see. But, since when have you been normal?” Marilynn joked, holding back giggles.
Persephone laughed at that, then answered “oh, I’m so not. I’m just trying to see if I could pretend to be for a moment. Y’know, thinking about boys, and how I need to lose weight and look good for them.”
Marilynn chuckled at that. “Oh, yeah, totally normal stuff. How was it?” She took another sip of her drink.
Persephone toyed with her cup, sliding it back and forth between her hands. She smirked and then forced herself to frown, making a big exaggerated show of it. She said, “it was awful. I couldn’t do it for more than a second before I realized that ‘yep, I’m totally gay through and through, no doubts about it!’”
Marilynn was in the process of drinking when she laughed uncontrollably, spitting her drink all over her cup and table.
Persephone laughed harder at that and then got up to get napkins. She returned to the table to see Marilynn trying to wipe her mouth clean with just her dry hand. She gladly took some napkins and began cleaning herself off.
Persephone helped, wiping down the table. As she crumpled the napkins and pushed them to the edge of their table, Persephone asked, “so, you excited for your very first college course? You look great, by the way. You’re gonna turn so many heads today!” She winked.
Marilynn looked down at the table and a small smile crossed her lips. She responded, “thanks. I went through, like, 3 outfits before I settled on this one.” She held up a piece of the cardigan. After she released it and flattened it back down, she said, “and yeah. I actually am excited!”
She then reached into her bag and brought out a Mead Notebook. “I have all these new school supplies and I want to use them. My first class is Creative Writing, and I can’t wait to get going… I wanna work on my stories and poems and write new ones.”
Her smile was so big; it took over her whole fair-skinned face. Her hazel eyes were bright and crinkled at the outer edges. Persephone loved how excited and enthusiastic she was when she talked about her writing. It was infectious. Persephone returned the great smile, her own light brown eyes bright and crinkled to match Marilynn’s.
“Good,” she said, “your writing is amazing as it is, but I bet this class will help you write tons more stuff.” She was sitting on edge of her chair, hands on the table, palms down, fingers spread out. Then she pointed to Marilynn with her right hand. “Your professor is gonna love your work… and you.”
Persephone didn’t think it possible, but Marilynn’s smile got even bigger. Marilynn said softly, “thanks, Seph, that really means a lot.” She reached over and touched Persephone’s left hand. She kept it there for a minute before she brought it back to her cup.
During the hand-touching, Persephone’s smile faded into a smaller, sad one, eventually threatening to turn into a frown. It was hard for her—the contact, the closeness. She knew it was a friendly touch, but she wished it was much more than that. She wished Marilynn had felt like her. But, it’s a lost cause; Marilynn’s not into girls.
Plus, she reminded herself, I don’t want to jeopardize our friendship by bringing up my feelings.
Even if Marilynn felt the same way, Persephone was afraid of the relationship not working out, it might ruin their friendship. They had been best friends practically their whole lives.
Their parents were friends, so they always played together when their parents hung out. They were inseparable. They took baths together, played Barbies and action figures, played Legos. They loved each other.
When they started getting older, around 9 or 10, that’s when things changed… Not so much they’re friendship, but their lives; especially Marilynn’s. That’s when she came out to her parents as trans. She always felt like she was a girl, and was now anxious/afraid of puberty. She DIDN’T want to go through male puberty.
And luckily her parents listened to her and wanted her to be happy. It definitely wasn’t easy for them to take at first, but they tried to not let it show. They were always supportive, and after much thought and talking with Marilynn and therapists, they realized they had to let her transition. She had always been kind of feminine, playing with Barbies and dolls, always playing as a girl…
So, much to Marilynn’s delight and relief, she was able to start puberty blockers and living as her true self, a trans girl named Marilynn.
And all along this time, Persephone was right beside Marilynn. She knew her friend was a girl. She was super supportive and always there for her. If anything, Marilynn’s transition strengthened their friendship. Now Marilynn could be included in all the “girl” things with Persephone. Like playing on the girls’ side in “Boys vs. Girls” games at school, shopping for clothes, doing each others’ hair, having slumber parties with other girls. And everyone in their families was really supportive through the entire process.
Also around this time, Persephone decided to come out, as well. Not as trans, but as gay. Persephone always imagined herself with a wife, never a husband. She had crushes on her favorite actresses and musicians. She knew she was a lesbian, and just like Marilynn’s parents, hers went out of the way to educate themselves and be supportive.
The girls went to a Youth LGBTQ Support Group twice a month and were active in their school’s GSA and other LGBTQ activities. They both grew up being completely out and proud. Sure, they had their bullies and disapproving teachers, or other adults in their lives that disapproved, but the girls and their parents confronted each disrespect and tried to quell it.
Growing up together, going to the same classes, working closely side-by-side in the GSA, Persephone eventually realized she had developed feelings for Marilynn as more than just best friends. She wanted to be girlfriends, and not in the way most straight girls use that term.
Persephone wanted to hold Marilynn’s hand, she wanted to hug her and smell her hair; she wanted to grow old with her. But Marilynn had never spoken up about her own sexuality in regards to girls. She talked about boys and Persephone listened and gave her some advice. Persephone talked about crushing on girls and Marilynn would give her advice, but never let on that she was into girls, herself. She was barely into boys, Persephone noticed. Sometimes she thought her talks on boys were forced heteronormativity. But she never brought up her desires, hopes, or thoughts. She waited for Marilynn to come to her. But she never did…
So, Persephone threw herself more into the friendship. And if that’s all they could ever be, that was okay with her. For the most part. Though when times like these happened, i.e. the hand-touching, it was difficult to remember that she’s fine with just being friends. But, as quickly as her frown appeared, it was replaced with a smile again.
“So, what about you? Are you ready for college?” Marilynn asked.
Persephone answered, “Yeah, I guess. I just hope I like my classes. Hopefully they’re not all boring. Remember Ms. Philipps’ AP Calculus class? Sooo boring. I’m glad I like math and read the book ahead of time, or else I would’ve failed for always falling asleep in class.” She chuckled. Marilynn joined her.
“Oh man, totally. Such a snooze fest. And yeah, I’m glad you read ahead too, so you could tutor me.” Marilynn laughed again.
Persephone turned serious for a minute.
“You think there’s gonna be many out lesbians at college? I know college is supposed to be more open and free and it’s where girls supposedly experiment… But I don’t know what happens at a Community College, it’s probably completely different than on-campus life…” Persephone wondered aloud.
Marilynn shrugged. “I don’t know. We should check out the LGBTQ Club in person and see what’s what. I’m psyched to go and meet new peeps in the community.”
Persephone agreed, “Definitely. After our classes today we should head over and talk to the club, let ‘em know we’re here, we’re queer, and ready to get into gear.”
Marilynn smirked at that and said, “You’re so lame,” and then threw one of the napkins at Persephone.
She caught it and threw it back, saying, “that’s why you love me.”
“No,” Marilynn contested while smoothing out the napkin on the table, “I love you because no one else will.”
“Ouch,” Persephone exclaimed while holding her hand to her chest, “Go straight for the heart why don’t’cha?”
“So,” Marilynn started.
She began ripping up her napkin.
“So?…” Persephone asked after about 30 seconds of silence.
“So, I’m kinda scared to start school. To be in this new place where practically nobody knows me. Should I go stealth? Should I be out and proud? I know we’ll be a part of the LGBTQ Club, but everyone won’t know that. They won’t know me. Should I be upfront about it to people, or stay quiet?”
The napkin was now in about 30 different pieces and she was still ripping.
Persephone donned her frown again and said, “well you know I can’t answer that for you, but I will say—just be you and everybody will love you. So what if you’re trans? If they can’t deal, then they’re not worth your time. So, yeah, maybe just go stealth, but if anyone asks, or you want to tell them, do it. Otherwise just live your normal life.” She shrugged at Marilynn before taking another drink of her Caramel Brulée Latte.
Marilynn crumpled the napkin pieces back together and set the mound aside with the rest. “I guess that makes sense. If they know, they know. If they don’t, oh well.”
“Yeah. Just be you and all the suitors will be fawning over you,” Persephone suggested.
Marilynn gave Persephone a skeptical look, “suitors?” she asked, “Really? What are we, in the fifties or something?”
Persephone blew the napkins over to Marilynn and responded, ”Oh shut up, you.”
“Seph…” Marilynn tried to talk.
“Yeah, Mars?” Persephone asked.
“I’m just worried they’ll all judge me and hate me and think I’m an ‘abomination’.”
Persephone reached her hand out and grabbed Marilynn’s and held it with both hands. “Mars Bar,” she smirked. “you are an amazing woman. Smart kid, beautiful, giving, and did I mention beautiful? Everyone will love you, whether they know you’re trans or not.”
Marilynn put her other hand on top of Persephone’s. She couldn’t make eye contact as she spoke, “Thanks Seph. And ditto. You’re the best friend a girl can have.
Persephone winced internally, but replied, “Damn Skippy. I’m awesome. And, hey, so are you. Never forget that. No matter what anybody says. You. Are. Awesome.” She punctuated the last statement by lifting their hands up and then dropping them back to the table in between each word.
Marilynn’s glowing smile emerged again and she said, “Thanks Seph. Really. I love you…”
She stroked Persephone’s hand as she said that.
“And I love you, Mars. Forever and always,” Persephone responded while internally headdesking.
Marilynn looked into Persephone’s eyes, almost peering into her soul. ”Forever and Always.”

How did I turn this transphobic moment into a fucking TV show feelgood outcome with no consequences? Gah, I hope this isn’t how this would happen in real life.
I guess this lends to the narrative that Jocelyn is transphobic and doesn’t learn? It may be a “nice moment” at the end of the scene, but did she really learn anything, or did she just manipulate Marilynn to get her to shut up?
And I feel like I’m way too descriptive with my writing? Or not descriptive enough. I can’t find a good middle ground...
I don’t know. I wrote this back in December. It’s part of my rewrite of The Undisclosed Life of Marilynn Baxter. I guess I’m just slowly writing little scenes whenever motivation strikes.
“So, why ‘Marilynn’?” Jocelyn asks while leaning on Marilynn’s left shoulder, her right hand tracing the lines of Marilynn’s right palm. The two of them are sitting on the couch, watching a movie.
Marilynn breaks from her happy daze and responds with “hmm? What do you mean?” She lightly taps Jocelyn on her head with her own and puts her left hand over Jocelyn’s right.
“Why’d you pick that name? Were you a fan of Marilyn Monroe?”
Marilynn frowns.
“Or is that what your parents would’ve named you if you were born a girl?” Jocelyn picks her head up a little to make eye contact while speaking, genuinely curious.
Marilynn pulls her hands away from Jocelyn and sits up fully, causing Jocelyn to do the same. Jocelyn looks quizzically at Marilynn and reaches for her. Marilynn recoils, pulls her knees up and hugs her legs.
“First of all, I WAS born a girl…” Marilynn starts and then turns her head away.
Jocelyn interrupts, “I didn’t mean…” while wringing her hands and frowning at Marilynn’s feet, not having the courage to look her in the eye anymore.
But, Marilynn continues, “and secondly, no, to be honest, I never made the connection to Marilyn Monroe. Was never really a fan. Thirdly, and most importantly…” she says as she unfolds herself, plants her feet on the ground, and turns to look directly at Jocelyn. “Unless they offer, it’s not polite to talk about trans peoples’ deadnames. And asking why I ‘picked’ my legal name falls into that category.”
Jocelyn holds her stare and utters, “honey…” with a concerned frown and tries to grab for Marilynn’s hand again.
Marilynn stutters, but lets her take it.
Her body visibly loosens a little bit as she says “but… since we’re dating, I’ll let it slide this once… So…” she begins, her eyes darting back and forth, “my name… Okay…” She’s about to continue but then takes a deep breath. And another.
Jocelyn, holding Marilynn’s right hand with her own left hand puts her right arm around Marilynn and rubs Marilynn’s back.
She tilts her head to meet Marilynn’s flitting eyes and says “it’s okay sweetie. You don’t have to explain. You’re Marilynn to me. That’s all that matters.” And then she kisses Marilynn on the cheek and Marilynn pulls her into a tight, long embrace.
“All that matters is right now,” Jocelyn whispers.
Through tears, Marilynn chokes out a “thank you.”

I was writing a post earlier, which included me transcribing the bit of story I was writing in my notebook, and the fucking app crashes right when I was going to add tags. 😶
I'm gonna type it up in Notes first and then post it here.
I made a bit of changes to Galileo Gayly. Instead of just two lesbians it's now one demisexual bi girl and a lesbian. They're in a polyamorous relationship. The lesbian sees a cute girl at the concert and wants to court her.
I decided it's going to be in the same universe as The Undeclared Life of Marilynn Baxter. They became juniors right as Marilynn became a freshman.

I just wrote this amazing line:
She knew her bestie was, as she called herself, "gayer than a double rainbow over a pride parade on the island of Lesbos."

I'm trying to cast the characters in my story The Undeclared Life of Marilynn Baxter. So far it looks like I'm gonna have Hari Nef as Marilynn, Tessa Thompson/Kiersey Clemons as Persephone, Yifei Liu/Arden Cho as Jocelyn, and Rosabell Laurenti Sellers's Devon. This is completely different than how I originally envisioned them. But then again, it has been ten years and there's been a lot of changes...

OC questions:
I’m gonna answer these for my character Rebecca Tollingworth. Who I later changed to Persephone Rhodes. She’s from the story The Undeclared Life of Marilynn Baxter.
1. What’s their full name? If they’re an alien and their name is in their native planet’s language, have you thought about what it means? —// Rebecca Philippa Ann Tollingworth —// and then later on —// Persephone Alexandra Rhodes
2. Say your OC made a playlist on Spotify. What bands would be on that playlist? Any specific genres? —// I actually have writing playlists for different characters. —// https://open.spotify.com/user/hawkingbishop/playlist/4munDDgJ08wsBLwSXc0e73?si=3X6dnju1 —// That’s the one specific to Rebecca/Persephone, but I have a few more for Rebecca/Marilynn and one full playlist for the whole story. —// I’ll go back and add links for those. —// Brand New, The Wooden Birds, The New Amsterdams, The American Analog Set, Fiona Apple, Tegan and Sara, Jenny Owen Youngs, Uh Huh Her, Do Make Say Think, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Paramore, Daughter, Kate Nash, Kesha, No Doubt, Weezer, Feist, Metric, Bright Eyes. —// She likes a lot of music. She bonds with Marilynn over music. They share bands back and forth.
3. What kind of video games would they play? Any specific titles? —// LIFE IS STRANGE. —// She’d probably play Overwatch. Portal, Halo, Fallout 4. —// She’d probably be a Nintendo fan. Mario Kart, Pokémon, Zelda, etc…
4. What would their favorite cartoons be, and why? What would their favorite characters be? —// Sailor Moon, Hey Arnold!, The Powerpuff Girls, Totally Spies, Jem, Gargoyles, Doug, Scooby Doo, Aladdin, X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman, Recess, Captain Planet, Daria, Pepper Ann, Kim Possible, Gummi Bears, Care Bears, Futurama, Avatar, The Legend of Korra. —// She loved these because they showed her tough, strong, independent women. Also they were super cool with superheroes and adventurers. (Plus she had a crush on most of the girls.) —// Faves would be Korra/Asami, Katara and Toph, Elisa and Demona from Gargoyles, Daria and Jane, Sailor Uranus, Spinelli from Recess, Shego and Kim Possible, Rogue from X-Men, Patti Mayonaise from Doug, Leela from Futurama.
5. What’s their favorite type of weather? Do they like to do anything specific on days when the weather is how they like it? —// Autumn for sure. She likes wearing nice warm sweaters and going for a walk, watching the leaves rustle in the cool breeze, listening to music. She likes hot cocoa. She likes snuggling with Marilynn (both for gay reasons but also just friend reasons).
6. If they’re a fan of Hot Chocolate, Tea, or Coffee, how do they like either of those drinks prepared? —// All of the above! —// Hot Chocolate with mini marshmallows. —// Tea with sugar, milk, and honey. —// Coffee with sugar and milk. —// She likes chai lattes. Caramel Macchiato.
7. What kind of animals would they like as a pet? What names would they give their pets if they got any? If they already have pet’s what are their names? —// She’d love cats and/or dogs. —// I forget if she already had a pet. I tried looking back but couldn’t find anything… —// She’d have a cat named Lara Croft and a puppy named Hades. (Get it? Because she’s Persephone. I’m so lame…)
8. How does your OC keep track of time? Do they have a planner? A calendar? —// She has a journal she’s constantly writing in. So each page has the time and date. —// Other than that she has a wall calendar of Symmetra and she uses the calendar on her phone.
9. How do they write? Do they write in cursive? How do they dot their i’s and j’s? Do they have specific ways that they write certain letters? —// She’s a neat writer. Print. The perfect mix of bubbly and square. Sometimes she put stars above the “i” and “j”. Most times it’s just a big dot. —// She writes “z” and “7” with a line through it. —// She sometimes mixes cursive and print.
10. What’s their favorite time of day? —// Evening. She loves the dark, cool, quiet of it.
11. What kinds of foods and drinks do they like? Do they like certain foods to be fried? Do they prefer certain foods to be prepared hot/cold? —// She tries to be a vegetarian. She’s mostly good at it. She still eats eggs. She prefers scrambled with cheese.
12. If they were an actual character in an animated film or TV series, who would they be voiced by? Do they have a certain accent that the person would need to perfect? —// I think Tessa Thompson would be good. Or maybe Kiersey Clemons.
13. If you are an artist, and if your OC can draw as well, could you replicate what their artstyle looks like? Or, if you can’t, could you describe it? —// Lots of rounded edges. Very fluid. Precise when she needs to be.
14. If your OC owned a Tumblr blog, what kind of content would they post? —// GAY STUFF™ —// She’d be complaining about Supercorp not being canon. She’d love Wynonna Earp. Van Helsing. Grey’s Anatomy. How to Get Away With Murder. Scandal. The Bold Type. Chasing Life. Sweet/Vicious. —// She’d reblog a lot of hot women. —// Poetry. Mostly others’ but she’d post her own sometimes too. She might even have a sideblog she uses to post her writings about Marilynn. —// Cool photography. Drawings. Art in general.
15. How do they type? Do they use emojis? Do abbreviate and shorten words? —// She’s a fast typist. She begrudgingly used emojis at first but then falls in love with them. 🤷🏼‍♀️ —// When texting Marilynn she’ll shorten things. But on her blog she’s mostly longhand everything. Usually just when she gets excited will she resort to things like “v sexy” or “btw” or something…?
16. If your OC was a film director, what kind of movies would they make? —// Gay ones. Lesbian indie romances. LGBTQ in general. —// She’d use lots of flowy imagery and close ups. Lingering scenery shots. —// She’d also want to direct sci-fi/fantasy.
17. If your OC was a musical artist, what genres would they do? —// She’d probably play bedroom pop? Indie? I can see her playing acoustic guitar and singing. Maybe ukulele, keyboard, drums?
18. What type of singing voice does your OC have? —// Sultry. Soft. A bit scratchy. She has trouble with really high notes, but she mostly sings in whispers anyway.
19. Does your OC like to collect things? What kind of things do they collect? —// She has tons of pictures of her and Marilynn from over the years. She has some on her vanity and the rest in a photo album. —// She also collects little things she finds when traveling somewhere with Marilynn. Seashells, rocks, twigs, leaves, feathers, coins, other miscellaneous stuff people dropped like playing cards or dice or something.
20. Was your OC inspired by anything? Another character? A person? —// Yeah, she was originally inspired by my friend (crush at the time) Molly. Rebecca was originally a tall blonde just like Molly. Wlw like Molly (she’s bi though). Vocal. Social-minded. Nice. Beautiful. Smart.

Persephone doesn’t realize she has a crush on Marilynn until they’re seniors in high school. It’s not like the first story where it was from the get-go. She’s always loved her, but it’s never been more than friends until now.
Marilynn thinks she’s straight at this point, though, so there’s no chance for them. She talks about boys and Persephone listens, and tries to give advice. But Marilynn never dates anyone. They go stag to all their school dances and events, or don’t go at all.
School is kind of hard for Marilynn sometimes. She’s pretty much stealth, but she’s been going to school with the same people for a while, so almost everybody knows she’s trans. Sometimes she gets hassled/made fun of, but Persephone is usually there to stick up for her and offer to shove something up the harassers’ ass.
So, everyone knowing she’s trans may have something to do with her dating situation. Persephone tries to tell her it’s their loss if that’s the case, and fuck those transphobic assholes. She’ll find someone eventually who’ll love her for her and won’t be a transphobic piece of shit. And Marilynn smiles at that and gives her a huge hug.
