Benefits of Low Density Living
One of the significant benefits of low-density living is reduced congestion. With fewer residents sharing the same space, you get to enjoy quieter surroundings and less crowded amenities. This creates a more relaxed and comfortable living environment.

12 Feet Ceiling Height
Why Ceiling Height Matters
High ceilings are a hallmark of luxury living. The 12 feet ceiling height in Tulip Crimson not only adds a touch of grandeur but also enhances the overall ambiance of your home.
Impact on Living Experience
Higher ceilings create a sense of openness and airiness, making your space feel more expansive. This feature also allows for better air circulation, contributing to a more comfortable living environment.
Comparison with Standard Heights
While standard ceiling heights in many apartments are around 8-10 feet, the 12 feet ceilings in Tulip Crimson Sector 70 provide a noticeable upgrade. This extra height makes a significant difference in terms of aesthetics and comfort.

Healing Hands: Chapter 6
Boss level, here we go!

Chapter 6: Stranger danger!
It was a good thing Jason hadn’t taken his weapons or armor out of his inventory last night. He opened his inventory and donned a crimson cloak. Approaching the midtown news stand, he paid for a paper advertising the location of the first level dungeon and continued on his way.
Skimming the headline, it sounded like he had to go to the northeast mountains to find the entrance. The team hadn’t been able to justify buying horses yet, so he’d have to go on foot. Fine by him, more time to walk off his bad mood. And work out a plan.
He’d be in and out, just to see what type of a threat they were dealing with. He wasn’t stupid, but he wasn’t about to just wait around for Dick if he wasn’t going to make a move until they knew exactly what they were facing.
Jason put the paper away and pulled his hood over his head, the red fabric concealing his face. He had reached the road leading north out of town. He took a swig of water from his canteen, which he noted was half-full, and set out.
The walk was almost pleasant, if not for the number of travellers-- both players and NPCs alike-- that he ran into. He couldn’t be sure of their intentions, especially towards a lone player, so he’d duck into the nearest ditch or bush for cover until they’d passed.
The sun warmed his dark cloak, but not uncomfortably so. It felt like springtime here in the game, with tulips and wild daffodils blooming in small clusters by the road. Jason knew he should be back before dark, but that was a long ways away. He kept checking his compass to make sure he was heading the right way, but the path was very easy.
In the distance, he began to see mountains. Pulling out the paper he’d gotten from that morning, he checked that the dungeon entrance was along the slope of one of the mountains. When he reached a crossroads, he adjusted his course accordingly.
By then, his anger had all but faded. He still didn’t agree with Dick and he definitely still thought he was an ass, but he didn’t want to rip his head off over it. Literally. God, what a mess.
He stopped to buy some fresh bread from a family farm of NPCs a few miles before the base of the mountains. What a thorough game it was to have given the three children dimples. He wondered how much information their programming gave them. Did they know the players were forcefully kept here? Did they live the same, simple day-to-day lives? Or did they simply stop moving when players weren’t looking, like cheap animatronics.
Jason shook his head. Too much time alone with his thoughts was never a good idea. He almost missed the company of the others. He’d even settle for Garfield, that obnoxious green punk.
He sighed and continued on his way. It wasn’t even halfway, but there was no way in hell he’d turn around now. Every step he took was a step closer to getting out of this... admittedly pleasant hellscape.
A flock of birds lifted off from a field on his right. They swirled about in the sky, fluid as fabric. Each one moved on its own path and yet fit in as part of the whole. He stopped, watching the ebb and flow as they journeyed to find the next field to settle on.
That would never be him, a cog in the machine, no matter how beautiful. He had put his faith in people before and quite literally gotten burned for it. He scowled at the memory, a crowbar and a grin flashing through his mind. No, he was better off fending for himself. Always had been.
He decided to count his steps instead of face his thoughts for the remainder of the trip.
732 steps to the base of the mountain. He picked the leftmost path.
1056 steps until he needed to grapple around a rockslide.
409 steps before the mouth of a cave. The cave.
Jason confirmed one more time that this was the suspected entrance to the dungeon. He put away the paper, took a deep breath, and plunged into the darkness.
It was cold and damp. He didn’t want to risk a light, so he put a hand to the freezing walls as he walked. He tested every step with his toe, trying to avoid potential falls into the darkness in front of him.
Silence drew in around him, heavy and expectant. It dared him to light a torch and rush forward to face the boss himself. He knew it was a bad idea, but it called to the energy humming in his blood.
He breathed and pictured colors.
In and out, he would be in and out, just like his breaths.
It was hard to think of the cave as anything other than the grave he’d once been confined to, but stretching out both arms helped.
In and out.
He pictured blue.
The ceiling seemed to press down on him, nausea rising in his throat.
Blue skies and blue waters. He wasn’t trapped in here, he was free. Free as the birds in the fields.
Just when he thought he couldn’t stand it anymore, he glimpsed a faint light ahead. It flickered around a bend in the cave, and illuminated the stalactites that were over twenty feet above his head.
The cold sweat that coated his back started to dry, the tightness in his throat loosening. Taking in a deep breath of stale air, he surged towards that light.
He rounded the corner, crossbow drawn and ready. The light came from a burning torch, barely a stub left. The sound of metal clashing on metal caught his trained ears and his head whipped up.
An enormous doorway stood in front of him, huge doors left ajar. He saw a flash of movement beyond them. The noises were also clearer now, shouting punctured by roars that shook the walls. Pulling the hood of his cloak further over his face, he silently advanced.
Peering through the gap between the doors, he made quick work of taking it all in. The room was a long hallway, lined with tall columns and lit by torches. There were some rocks scattered about, which would provide good cover from the massive beast before him.
The monster was about fourteen feet tall of ugly with a large, red belly. It wore armored greaves and wielded a huge axe and a round shield. Its face had a dog-like snout framed by a form-fitting helmet. Red eyes glowed from within the helmet, and slobber dribbled from pointed teeth.
So basically a medieval Killer Croc. This was doable.
Jason was about to leave and report back when he heard a shout. “Kitty, ‘Gami, cover me!”
Before he could unpack that hell of a battle cry, a figure in black armor darted out from behind a column. They blew a raspberry at the boss, then somersaulted and wove just out of reach from its enraged blows. At the same time, someone with red and gold armor drew a rapier and began slicing at the boss’s feet.
A slight person with red armor stood from where they’d been crouched behind a rock on the far side of the room. They fired a longbow with devastating accuracy, and Jason watched in profile as the arrow pierced the monster’s eye. They disappeared just as fast.
The boss roared and started swinging wildly. The red and gold fighter danced out of the way, but tripped over a piece of rubble. Jason’s eyes widened as the monster gleefully brought its axe down upon the felled player.
It never met its target. The black armored person dove over their friend and raised a shield. The blow sent the two flying back to the columns, where they quickly limped for cover.
From Jason’s vantage point, he could see a figure in blue armor dart over to the two injured fighters. They shook their head, then whistled a series of notes. Answering whistles came from the last place he’d seen the red archer, and the three people stayed put.
“Queenie, Maneuver 18!” The archer, a girl he now realized, yelled. A fifth person, this one in golden armor, leapt onto the monster’s head from the top of a column near the ceiling. They took a flail out of their inventory and bashed the boss’s good eye, then flipped down to find cover opposite of the archer. All the while, the archer ran along the length of the hall, firing shots into the monster’s gut.
She slid neatly behind the rocks in front of Jason and glanced at the boss behind them. It was blinded now, bellowing furiously. The girl’s chest heaved with the effort of running.
With three of their fighters out of commission, he didn’t like their odds. Well, so much for in and out. Dick was going to kill him for this.
Jason waved until the girl in front of him noticed the movement. Her mouth, the only part of her face that wasn’t covered by her helmet, parted in surprise.
He somersaulted to join her spot of cover and said quietly, “I can help.” The monster had quieted down now and seemed to be listening intently.
She nodded, then pointed at him and then to his right. Pointed to herself, then to the left. She looked at him to verify he’d understood and he gave a thumbs up.
She picked up a handful of pebbles and tossed them in front of the rocks they hid behind. The monster pricked up its ears and began advancing towards their hiding spot. She held up a fist to have them wait. The boss grew closer and still she held. Jason could feel its hot breath through his cloak before she finally whispered, “Now!” and launched herself to the left. Jason dove aside just in time. He fired his crossbow at the monster’s chest and could see the girl doing the same on its other side. It had left itself open in burying its axe in the rocks they’d been at mere moments before.
Damn this girl was good.
He watched her exchange her bow for a pair of daggers. The beast’s arms still busied trying to get its axe unstuck, she flipped onto them and ran up its back. Jason fired more bolts into it, keeping its attention while she--
Oh damn. This girl was really good.
She flipped her daggers around and dragged them through its skin behind her as she slid down its back. Then she danced away behind a column, switching back to a longbow and firing arrows into its exposed arms.
Jason grinned, letting the thrill in his blood take over for a moment. He exchanged his own ranged weapon for a shortsword, and started hacking away at the monster’s legs. Where the red archer went high, he went low. They accommodated each other perfectly. He glanced up to see the boss’s HP depleting to nearly zero.
While he swung his sword and dodged out of the monster’s reach, he noticed how much more focused he felt, despite having freed the roaring in his veins. It seemed that the Pit didn’t have as much of a hold on him while he was in the game. A small victory, but staying in control was more than useful here.
The beast turned around just as Jason swung his sword, and it broke against the monster’s shield. A rush of movement beside him was the golden fighter, sinking their flail into the beast’s back. They wrenched it free only to whirl around and use the momentum to plant it in the monster’s stomach.
That blow did it in. It staggered backwards, wounds glowing bright red, and shattered into fragmented pixels. A menu screen popped up in front of him displaying his share of the loot, which looked to be proportional to how many blows he had landed.
Jason looked at the other two. The golden one had already rushed back to where their injured companions were, but the red one remained.
“Thank you,” she held out her hand to him with a smile. He took it and shook once. “It was my pleasure,” he rasped, still catching his breath. He raised his broken sword and asked, “You don’t happen to know a blacksmith, do you?”
She held up one finger, then ran off back into the rubble, searching for something. When she returned, she held the other pieces of his sword. “I can mend it, if you’d like,” she offered, almost shyly.
He nodded and handed his piece to her, hilt first. She assembled all the fragments on the ground, then placed both hands over it and inhaled deeply. As she breathed in, the pieces were pulled inward to their original positions as if magnetized to each other. She breathed out just as deeply, and the cracks between the pieces glowed blue.
The glow faded when she picked it up and handed it back to him. He twirled it around a few times just to be sure, but it felt as good as new. Maybe even better. “That was... amazing. Thank you,” he said, sincerely grateful.
She smiled and replied, “It’s the least I could do. It’s a type of magic I learned called Restorative Alchemy, if you’re interested!” That was definitely something worth looking into. “I also put a little bit of magic in it, so when it’s hit like that again, it--”
“Lady!” A girlish, high-pitched shout came from the player in golden armor. She ran back over to the two of them and tugged the girl away. “Stranger danger!” she muttered pointedly.
The red archer tried to respond, “Well we wouldn’t have won without hi--” But the other girl cut her off, “Shush, we don’t even know who he is!” The archer gave a long-suffering sigh.
Jason took the opportunity to leave while their backs were turned. He’d intruded enough, and he didn’t really care to learn their names.
As he disappeared back into the cave, he thought he heard someone say, “Oh! He’s gone....”

Marinette watched the doors in the boss dungeon, wondering why that strange man had left so soon. She blinked and turned her attention back to her injured friends. Adrien had taken that hit for Kagami, and even though it was to his shield, he’d need a lot of rest before his arm was in working condition again.
The fight was costly. Luka had run out of healing potions, putting more than half of the team out of commission. It had just been her and Chloe left fighting. She wasn’t sure if they would’ve made it, let alone won without that stranger showing up....
“How’s it looking, boss?” Adrien’s hiss of pain pulled her from her thoughts. She crouched down beside him while Luka treated the arm with what simple herbs he had on hand.
Luka finished tying a sling and stood. “You’re going to be fine. Keep it still for a few days. We’ll get you some health potions when we get back to the house. Kagami, can you stand?”
The girl in question used to column to get up on her feet, but kept her weight off her left. That must have been the one she’d tripped on. “I can stand, but I’ll need help to walk,” she said through gritted teeth.
A costly fight indeed. Marinette moved to slide her arm under Kagami’s and supported her. “We just need to make it back to the horses,” she murmured to her friend.
God, her friend. Her friends had gotten hurt because her plan failed. They had no idea what they were walking into, and she had almost gotten them all killed because of it.
They just needed more time. More training.
The five of them started to limp back to the cave where the light from their torch had almost died out, when a bright light flooded the chamber. It came from behind them, and as they turned to look they saw an open door.
“That must be to the next level....” Adrien said softly.
Marinette looked at her Order, broken as they were, and made a decision. “Another time,” she said. “We’ve done enough for today.”
They still had to make it back and spread the word to the other players. A small smile fell on her face. They could give them this news, give them this hope.

“You did WHAT?” Dick’s voice cut across the room. Jason had returned to their base after dark, but he didn’t have much choice in the matter. He was tired from walking the entire trip and even more tired from the battle, so his pace on the return trip was a little lacking. But that didn’t mean Dick had to yell about it.
“I helped some people beat the first boss,” Jason shrugged. “I don’t see what the big fuckin’ deal is.” He put his pack down and grabbed some food from the counter.
Dick looked him over and, finding no major injuries, rubbed his hand over his mouth. “What part of ‘wait for recruits’ did you not understand?”
Ah yes, this again. He decided to tactfully dodge that shit. “I only meant to get a look at the boss. You know, do some reconnaissance and then report back? But a group was already there and fighting, and they needed help.”
“So you jumped in to help them?” Tim asked incredulously. “You? Mister Lone Wolf?”
“For fuck’s sake, they could have died,” Jason was getting annoyed now.
Dick gripped his shoulders. “So could you.” He glared as Jason pushed off the touch. “Look Jay, I know we don’t always get along, but I don’t want to... I can’t....” Dick hung his head. “Not again,” he said softly.
“Look,” Jason raised his hands in mock surrender. “I’m not looking to die anytime soon. Repeat performances were never really my thing,” he gave a crooked smile. “But I was fine. The monster couldn’t hold a candle against us.”
Dick didn’t look convinced. “Can you just... tell us the next time you go off on your own?”
Jason barked a laugh. “Not a chance.”
“You’ll give me gray hairs by the time I’m thirty...” Dick rubbed his temples.
“Then we’ll match,” Jason winked and ran a hand through his streak of white hair. Tim snickered and rolled his eyes. Bastard.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Tumblr media
Dig.
Throw.
Dig.
Throw.
The sun was setting as I shoveled dirt on top of the freshly dug grave. It sunk below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of blood oranges and russet reds and royal purples. I had found a good spot in the back of the garden obscured by a rose bush and some lemongrass. Usually, the garden looked whimsical and full of life, but now everything looked so dark and bleak. It looked drained of color, like it had gone from technicolor to black and white. Even though it was the end of summer, I could swear there was a chill in the air that bit and nipped at my skin, like I was in the middle of a stark, barren winter. I could almost forget where I was and think I was in an empty graveyard in the dead of night.
Dig.
Throw.
Dig.
Throw.
I kept a steady rhythm as my hands worked. A burning simmer started in my spine and spread throughout my back. It ran through my limbs and reached all the way to the balls of my feet and tips of my fingers. It transformed into a dull ache over time and stung my nerve endings. My hands were rubbed raw and red, and my joints and bones and muscles screamed at me to stop, but I couldn’t. Not until this was over.
My shoulders hunched over as I stuck my shovel in the pile of damp earth next to the grave. I lifted it up and hauled it over my shoulder, launching it into the rectangular hole in the Earth. I could no longer see her face, but six feet below where I stood was a cold, dead body riddled with flies and worms and maggots that crawled all over her rotting, gray flesh and peeled back her blue-tinged skin. Her eyes would be open forever, but never seeing anything. Only black.
Dig.
Throw.
I smoothed over the top of the grave with the back of the steel shovel blade, sifting through the soil. Then, I threw the shovel down next to me and wiped the sweat that had gathered on my brow with the back of my hand. I settled my hands on my hips and stared down at the fresh patch of dirt surrounded by dewy grass at my feet. Maybe I’d plant a row of multicolored tulips there, or a blackberry bush for you, and no one would ever know.
I headed back inside, airing out my sweat soaked shirt that clung to my skin. My muddy shoes left a trail of footsteps on the hardwood floors in my wake, but I didn’t care. I’d clean it later. I came to my bedroom door and found it still closed, just as I had left it. I grabbed the handle and twisted it, pulling the door open.
The room was clean now. After hours of dousing the sheets in bleach and scrubbing the floors until my hands throbbed, the room looked like it always had, like nothing wicked or sinister had ever happened there. But I would always see the blood on the white sheets, the ruby red liquid that had painted the floors and coated our bodies in crimson. Something told me you always would too.
“There’s my pretty girl.” I smiled and stepped towards you, the floorboards creaking under my feet.
You were sitting on the edge of the bed with your legs dangling off of the side. You were fresh out of the shower, the blood long gone, and droplets of water dripped from the ends of your hair, hitting the white sheets. You wore a white eyelet dress that compliment your complexion perfectly. It showcased all of the scars on your arm, some old and some new, raised and red and standing out on your skin like brushstrokes on an otherwise blank canvas. You were my masterpiece, covered in blue and purple bruises, and I wanted to hang you up on a wall for everyone to see.
I rounded the bed and stopped right next to you. “How are you feeling?”
You didn’t seem to register my presence, even though I was inches from you, and my voice filled the silent room. You stared at the wall in front of you with droopy, unfocused eyes, your spine curved. I lifted my hand and gently placed it on your shoulder, almost hesitantly. Usually, you would flinch or wince when I touched you, but you didn’t react at all.
“I know what happened was... traumatizing,” I stumbled over my words, “but you understand why I did what I did, right?” I looked down at you and traced my finger along the line of your jaw. “She would’ve taken you away from me.”
Still nothing. It was like my words weren’t reaching your ears. I leaned forward and buried my nose in your hair. The smell of soap and green apple shampoo clung to you. I stepped back and retracted my hand from you. I tilted my head to the side, raking my gaze over your form.
“Take off your dress,” I commanded. Without a moment of hesitation, you gripped the hem of your dress and pulled it over your head. You wriggled out of it and laid it down on the bed next to you. Then you folded your hands in your lap, clad in only a white lace thong.
I walked over to the dresser and pulled out the top drawer. I took out the pocket knife from its usual place and pushed the drawer back in. I walked over to you, the soles of my solid shoes thunking against the wooden floors, and switched the blade out. I stopped in front of you, the blade glinting in the dim light. In one swift movement, I dragged it vertically down the skin of your stomach, creating just a deep enough incision for blood to seep out. It was about four inches long, and the crimson color of your blood stood out on your skin as it trickled down.
I shifted my gaze up to your face. There was no sign of a reaction, no scream, no gasp, not even a twitch. Nothing that showed me you had processed it all. Your eyes remained blank and glazed over, like you were lost in some sort of trance. Part of me desired to cut you again and see how much pain it would take to make you scream, to push you to the edge of death.
Anger bubbled inside of me, and I struck your face with my hand. The clip echoed in the room as your face turned to the side. You didn’t make a sound. “Say something!” I shouted, spit flying. I couldn’t tell whose face was redder, mine from rage, or yours from the blow I had just landed to your cheek.
You looked up at me at last, but it was like you weren’t really looking at me, but through me. “What do you want me to say?”
My mouth fell open, and I stumbled back a step. I drew in a breath. I had broken you. I had dreamed of breaking you for so long, of getting you to bend to my will and do my bidding, that now that I had it, it was bittersweet. I could no longer see you tremble with fear like I so loved to. No more passion, no more emotion. It’s like you were an empty husk, all the life sucked out of you. I couldn’t tell who I had truly killed: Grace, Brant, or you.
I heard a creak come from somewhere inside the manor, like a door swinging on its hinges, and my ears pricked up. “Nothing. I want you to say nothing.” I pointed to the dress on the bed, my eyes glued to the open doorway. “Put that on and stay here. Don’t go anywhere unless I tell you to.”
You started putting on your dress, and I moved towards the doorway. I stepped out into the hall, swiveling my head from side to side. I shifted the handle of the knife in my hand. Drops of blood ran down the blade and splattered on the floor in perfect, dime-sized, ruby red drops. Every cell in my body vibrated, and the hairs on the back of my neck stood on edge. I was on high alert. I tiptoed into the foyer to find the double front doors wide open. The carved, oak wood around the lock was splintered, as if it had been forced open.
“Bruce.”
I spun around on my heel to see Alfred standing behind me. He was panting, his chest heaving up and down, and sweat slicked his skin. “Where is she?”
I stood tall, puffing out my chest. “Where is who?” I asked in a condescending tone.
He narrowed his eyes at me. “You know who I’m talking about. I know you have her.”
“Well, then you’d know that having this discussion is pointless.” I leaned against the doorframe and crossed my arms.
His gaze flickered down to the knife in my hand, and he clenched his jaw. “Did you...” He couldn’t bring himself to voice the words out loud.
“Kill her?” I finished for him. He stared at me and exhaled. I scoffed. “Don’t be ridiculous. Why would I try to make it look like she went to Paris if I was just going to kill her?” I pushed off of the doorframe and swung the knife in my hand as I walked. “What a waste of time and effort.”
“I know you care for her, Bruce, and that scares you.” He stepped towards me. “I know you think you’re doing the right thing, but you’re hurting her.” “You say that like you think I don’t want that.” I smirked at him.
His jaw ticked. “Just show me where the girl is, and I’ll be on my way.”
“What, so you can rat on me to the cops?” I snickered. “No, thank you.” “There’s a reason I came here by myself, Bruce, otherwise I would’ve just called the GCPD a long time ago and let them handle it.”
“But you do want to take (Y/N) from me, and unfortunately, that I cannot allow.” I waved the knife in the air as I spoke. “You said it yourself: I care for her.”
“I’m not leaving without her, Bruce.” The look on his face was grim and serious. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes.” “Whatever it takes to get me back on your leash, huh? I know that’s what this is all about.” I stopped in my tracks and spread my arms out wide. “You want to protect me, to control me, but I can’t be controlled anymore, Alfred. I’m unhinged, and there’s no going back.” I raised my hands in front of me. “Why don’t you stop trying to protect me and put your money where your mouth is?”
He shook his head solemnly. “I don’t want to fight you, Bruce.”
“Really? ‘Cause I do.” I slashed at him with my knife, but he caught my wrist. He twisted my arm in his grip at an uncomfortable angle until I had no choice but to release the handle of the knife. It clattered to the floor noisily. He stepped on it with his shoe and pushed it away. It skidded across the floor and hit a wall before coming to a rest.
He quirked a brow at me. “Then let’s make the fight fair.”
I glared at him and slammed my foot down on his. His hold on my arm loosened just enough for me to slip out of. I bent my elbow and shoved my forearm into his chest. He stumbled back, allowing enough distance between us. I swung my fist at him before he could catch his footing, but he raised his hand just in time to block me. I threw my other hand at him, and his arm shot out to catch it. He pushed me back with his hands on me before letting me go. I fell backwards until my back hit the wall. I lifted my head to see him striking up a fighting stance, beckoning me to come at him with his hands.
My hands curled into fists at my side. I hurled another fist at him with a cry of anguish. He stopped my offending fist inches before it could connect with his face, but I brought my foot up at the same time. I landed a solid kick to his stomach, taking him by surprise and knocking him back. He doubled over in pain. I grabbed him by the shoulders and lifted my leg to knee him in the chest, but he latched onto my thigh before I could.
He swept me off of my feet, and my back collided with the hardwood floor. I laid there for a moment, sucking in air, before placing my hands on either side of my head. I kipped up, kicking him twice in the chest before landing on my feet. He pulled his arm back, and before I could react, his fist slammed into the side of my head.
A sharp, buzzing noise filled my ears, and gray dots clouded over my peripheral vision. My teeth scraped against the inside of my cheek, cutting my flesh. I stumbled to the side and braced myself on the wall before I could completely collapse. I blinked rapidly and shook my head, clearing my vision. The noise faded away, and I focused on Alfred’s face in front of me. His eyes were wide, and his mouth formed a small ‘o’ shape, like he couldn’t really believe he had punched me.
I raised my hand and swiped my thumb at the corner of my mouth. I glanced down at the pad of my thumb to see a drop of scarlet blood there. I looked up at Alfred and grinned. I could feel blood flood the side of my mouth, staining my teeth, and trickle out of my mouth.
I came at him with a flurry of fists, my face contorted with anger. He blocked each one successfully, but I backed him up into the corner of the foyer. He caught each of my wrists and held them above me. He crashed his forehead against mine, and I was sent sliding across the hardwood. I landed on my side, my head spinning, and rolled over onto my back with a groan. I sat up on my elbows and clutched my throbbing head to see Alfred stalking towards me.
“(Y/N)!” I called out, crawling away from him. I reached for a vase of flowers on a nearby table and chucked it at him. He dodged it, and it splintered into a thousand ceramic pieces against the wall behind him. The wall was painted with dry soil, and a sad, wilted flower with a limp stem fell to the floor.
Alfred continued to draw closer and closer to me. “(Y/N), come here now!” I scooted backwards on the floor and grappled for a frame next. I briefly glanced at the photo. It was the picture me and my parents took in the garden on my seventh birthday, bright smiles lighting up all of our faces. I lobbed it at him with a yell, but he once again avoided my assault. The glass in the frame cracked as it hit the wall before dropping to the ground, shards of glass spilling across the floor.
My head bumped into the wall as I moved back as far as I possibly could. I looked up to see Alfred gaining on me, setting alarm bells off of in my head. I looked around for something else to throw to buy me time when I noticed the discarded pocket knife from earlier. I stretched my arms and fumbled for it. “(Y/N)!”
“Yes?”
I raised my head to see you standing in the archway leading to the hall opposite me. Your dress was back on, and a drop of blood ran down your leg. I scrambled to my feet just as Alfred came upon me. He extended a hand out to stop me, but I grabbed onto it, using his momentum to flip him over me and onto the floor behind me. He landed with a grunt, and I dashed over to where you were. I moved behind you and trapped your back flush against my chest with an arm around your waist.
Alfred slowly got to his feet only to see me holding the knife to your throat. “Don’t come any closer,” I warned.
His gaze switched back and forth between me and you, and he swallowed roughly. “You’re not going to hurt her, Bruce.” He shook his head.
I shifted my weight between my feet, fidgeting with the handle of the knife in my hand. You were still against me, like you were lost in some kind of dream, and I was surprised to find that I was the one shaking. “You’re right,” I breathed out after a while. “I’m not.”
The noise was barely audible at first, but I could feel it in my bones. The faint wail of police sirens could be heard in the distance, and it became louder and louder as it grew closer. I narrowed my eyes at Alfred. He had called for backup ahead of time.
Fuck. There was no way I would have time to take him down before the police showed up, let alone secure your safety. I grabbed the magnet hanging from the chain around my neck and touched it to the back of your collar. It gave way, and I tossed it aside. It fell to the floor with a metallic clang and landed face up so the light glinted off of the silver letters spelling ‘Mr. Wayne’s’ in all caps.
“Sorry, Alfred.” I kept the blade of the knife against your throat as I shuffled us over to the open doorway. “It’s been nice to catch up,” I stopped in the doorway and grinned at him, “but I’ve got to go.”
I walked backwards through the doorway and pulled you with me, never taking my eyes off of him for a second. When he was out of my line of sight, I moved the knife away from your throat and let go of you. I looked around for some way to get out of here quickly, and my gaze landed on Grace’s silver Porsche parked at the curb of the circular driveway. I ran towards it and reached for the handle of the door to the driver’s side. Please be unlocked, please be unlocked.
The door clicked open with a satisfying pop. Not only was it unlocked, but her keys laid haphazardly on the tan leather seat. Rich people truly are too careless and trusting. I looked back at you over my shoulder. You were standing idly in the driveway, the skirt of your dress and your hair whipping in the wind. I jabbed at the car with my thumb. “Get in the car!”
At my words, you came to life like some kind of robot. You walked around the car and got in on the passenger’s side. I picked up the keys and climbed into the driver’s seat. I slammed the door shut behind me and jammed the key into the ignition, revving the engine.
“Where are we going?” you asked. I looked over at you, but you faced forward, staring blankly out of the windshield.
The steady thrum of the engine filled the silence that fell over us. I adjusted the rearview mirror and saw the reflection of red and blue flashing lights behind me. I couldn’t go out the gate now or they would catch me. I needed some place close by and discreet, somewhere nobody else would be and nobody else knew about. I tapped my thumbs against the steering wheel. When realization dawned on me, I sat up straighter in my seat. I had almost forgotten what day it was.
“Hold on, gorgeous.” I spun the steering wheel, turning the car off of the path. “It’s about to get really bumpy.”
The car rocked as I drove over the curb. I slammed down on the gas pedal with my foot as I sped through the garden. The wheels of the Porsche ground up any flowers or bushes I drove over and tore up the earth. I maneuvered around trees and stone benches and fountains that blocked my path. When I spotted the back gate, I watched the red arrow on the gas meter tick higher and higher. I clenched my jaw as I ran straight into it at full force. There was a bit of resistance and the crunch of metal, but then the gates flew open and banged into the brick wall. I drove through it and pressed down on the brake before the car could go spiraling out of control.
The paved roads turned to dirt paths, the limestone walls of mansions into towering, striped, slender tree trunks, and the sirens faded into the distance. You were quiet next to me during the drive. You sat slumped in your seat, barely blinking, barely breathing, your lips parted. I wondered if I peeled back your skin and hair and bone and peered into your head, what I would find there. Would it just be black and white, fuzzy tv static? Or would I find myself staring into Grace’s cold, dead eyes?
I caught a glimpse of myself in the rearview mirror. My dark curls were disheveled, and faint bruises littered my skin. I had a scratch on my forehead, and blood stained the side of my mouth. My eyes looked impossibly dark, darker than they ever had before. They were like two dark holes burrowed deep into the earth, and if you fell into them, you would keep tumbling down, down, down, and never reach the bottom. I looked completely deranged and disturbed, like the mask of sanity I had worn for so long had disappeared, revealing the true me underneath.
I stopped driving when the hill got too steep to drive up any more. I kicked open the door and ran around to your side of the car. I wrenched open the door and pulled you out. I intertwined my fingers with yours and dragged you along behind me, our feet crunching the dry grass beneath us.
“Do you know where we are?” I asked, and you shook your head. “We’re at Mount Bristol. I don’t know if I ever told you this, but every year, my father and I would go camping here. We would come up here and place a rock on the top of the mountain. After he died, Alfred tried to keep up the tradition, but it just wasn’t the same. It felt forced.”
The sun was completely gone now and replaced by the moon in the sky. The stars twinkled up above, and everything around us was black. Tree branches seemed to come out of nowhere and scratch at our skin. Your bare feet were caked with mud, and I began to become plagued with exhaustion.
I was starting to think I couldn’t go on for much longer when the plane started to even out. The mountain sloped out as we came to the top, and I nearly bumped into the stack of rocks at the top, almost toppling it over. I stopped in my tracks and stared down at the tower of stones. They were large, flat, rounded rocks piled on top of each other, each one inscribed with the initials BW or TW.
I turned around and looked at you. You were slightly swaying on your feet, like there was a melody only you could hear playing in your head. “Truth is, I don’t know why I brought you up here, gorgeous.” I laughed slightly. “I’m running out of options. I don’t think there’s a way out.” I smiled sadly at you. “I think I’m out of control.”
Suddenly, the sound of sirens filled the air. It was deafening and vibrated the trees. It scared crows, and they squawked as they flew up into the open, night air. The trees around us were lit up in shadowy silhouettes by red and blue flashing lights. Obscured figures surrounded me on all sides, shoulders squared and guns drawn. I pulled you flush against me again and whipped out my pocket knife, holding it to your throat.
“GCPD!” a voice pierced the air, a voice that I had heard many times. Jim Gordon marched ahead of all the other cops, his pistol aimed at my head. “Drop your weapon!”
“One step closer, and she gets sliced open!” I threatened.
Jim halted and raised his hand, commanding all the other officers to do the same. “You don’t want to do this,” he said in his low, gruff voice.
“Is that all you got?” I scoffed, shifting the weight of the knife in my hand.
“Give it up, Bruce!” Harvey fell into step beside Jim. “It’s over! We’ve got you surrounded!”
“It’s not over until I say so!” I shouted.
“Come on, Bruce.” Jim stepped forward and lowered his gun. “You’re not going to hurt her, and you don’t want her to get hurt either. Just put down the knife and let her go.”
My smirk fell from my face, and my jaw clenched. My hand that was holding the knife was trembling. I looked down at you against me. You stood still, not even moving an inch, not a muscle. But it wasn’t out of fear; it was because you were unaware of everything around you.
A single tear escaped from the corner of my eye and slipped down my cheek. I guess it’s really over.
I took the knife away from your throat and pushed you away from me. “Fine.” I raised my hands with a huff. The knife slipped from my grip and fell to the forest floor. “Take me away, detective,” I taunted.
The second the knife was out of my hand, the officers descended on me like vultures on a carcass. An officer came up behind me and roughly jerked my hands behind my back. He slapped a pair of handcuffs on my wrists and hauled me down the hill. He yanked on my arms until sharp jolts of pain shot through my limbs and pulled me in tow until my feet tripped over one another. He took me down to where a squad of cop cars were waiting for me. He crushed me against one of them, my cheek squished against the window.
“Hey, stop!” I protested. My voice came out mumbled and indiscernible against the glass. “Stop! Stop it! You’re hurting me!”
“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law...” the officer continued to read my rights, his voice blaring directly in my ear. But I stopped listening as I saw you being led to one of the other cop cars.
A slew of officers were gathered around you, talking in soothing tones and asking you questions with pitiful looks on their faces. You didn’t say anything. You looked rattled, hugging the fleece blanket they had given you tighter around you. The bright light from the headlights lit up your form, making you look like a ghost. Whatever spell you had been under before was now broken.
The cop put a hand over my head as he shoved me into the back seat of the police car. I leaned my head against the window, my arms awkwardly crushed against the back of the carseat behind me. I stared at the blue and red flashing lights casting across the fogged up window. But mostly the red.
Mostly the red.

The Man Who Keeps Monet’s Famed Gardens Growing
Tumblr media
View of Monet’s water garden, Giverny, France. Photo © Eric Sander.
Each year, from late March to early November, more than 500,000 people travel to Giverny, France, to visit a place they’ve primarily seen in paintings.
They arrive to find a charming pink farmhouse with emerald-green shutters, set among brilliant flowerbeds that overflow with tulips, lavender, or sunflowers, depending on the season. They follow signs to a tunnel, and are led to an oasis of weeping willows and bamboo shoots, where they can amble along a pond packed with waterlilies, before crossing a familiar Japanese footbridge cloaked in wisteria.
More than just the idyllic inspiration and open-air studio behind some of the world’s most famous paintings, Claude Monet’s gardens in Giverny have long been understood as a total work of art in their own right. (In 1907, Marcel Proust wrote in an essay that Giverny was a “transposition of art.”)
Today, the Impressionist master’s home and gardens—where he lived and worked for most of the second half of his life—are a site of pilgrimage for not just art lovers but botany buffs, sightseers, and wanderlust addicts alike. Recently, on July 10th, Jean-Yves Le Drian, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, announced that the site would be a candidate for a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. That achievement is due in no small part to Gilbert Vahé, Giverny’s head gardener.
On a cool July afternoon, I met Vahé in Monet’s gardens. Slight and bespectacled, he wears a simple straw hat, polo shirt, and leather shoes. His fingernails, encrusted with earth, are the only clue that gives away his expertise—though shortly after we’re introduced, as we pass by hordes of visitors to reach a relatively quiet place to chat, he launches into a critique of some nearby irises.
Tumblr media

Vahé has worked at the gardens for some 35 years, from 1977 to 2011—after which he retired temporarily—and since January 1, 2017. This year he resumed his position as head gardener after the departure of Englishman James Priest, who served in the role for the past six years. Vahé lives next door, where he keeps his own garden—which is a sight in itself, often stopping tourists in their tracks on their way to Monet’s home.
As we walk through the Clos Normand—the main garden beside Monet’s former home, which occupies nearly a hectare of land—we settle at a small, pebbled clearing, lined with three curved benches, which were designed by Monet.
Vahé’s post at Giverny began with the restoration of the gardens in 1977. While Michel Monet, the artist’s son, had left the property to Paris’s Académie des Beaux-Arts upon his death in 1966, with a view for it to become a museum, it went untouched for a decade. An initiative to revive the garden eventually materialized thanks to the French philanthropist and curator Gérald Van der Kemp, who is also known for spearheading the restoration of the Palace of Versailles, and who would go on to become the first director and curator of at Giverny. In 1970, he set up the Versailles Foundation in New York, which was backed by American patrons, and would also fund Giverny. But it was not until an auspicious meeting with Vahé that the gardens really began to take shape.
Vahé was born some 30 kilometers from Giverny, in a town southeast of Paris, and pursued a career in horticulture at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Horticulture in Versailles, with the intention of becoming an orchid specialist. He would ultimately set up his own landscaping business instead, and it was just after shuttering that venture—when he grew tired of dealing with finances and customers—that he was introduced to Van der Kemp. The head of the school in Versailles connected the two men, knowing that Vahé needed work and Van der Kemp was looking for a skilled horticulturist.
Tumblr media

Vahé believes the job was his destiny, admitting that he never (“Jamais!”) imagined having such a job when he chose his field of study.
He recalls that at the time, in 1976, Monet’s gardens were largely unknown in France, save for intellectual circles; even in the nearest town of Vernon, just six kilometers away, shopkeepers were unaware that the famous artist had lived there. (Today, visitors arrive in throngs at the Vernon rail station, before making their way to Giverny.) Taxi drivers in New York, he quips, were more likely to know about Van der Kemp’s restoration.
The process of revitalizing the gardens was slow, spanning a long four years. Vahé worked alongside a team of fellow gardeners, including one who had worked alongside Monet himself, while Van der Kemp conducted research that would help to determine what should be planted and where. None of the plants from Monet’s time had survived, and the land was overgrown with grass and weeds. They took cues from the artist’s letters, oral accounts from relatives, photographs, and of course, paintings, to recreate the legendary garden that Monet had brought to life.
Though Van der Kemp was separated from the artist by several generations, Vahé notes that he was well-suited to lead the restoration. Van der Kemp was a painter and gardener himself, and he was well-connected, moving in circles in Paris that were not so far removed from those that Monet had engaged with decades earlier.
Monet had bought the farmhouse and its land in 1883, stumbling upon it while on a walk, and later permanently traded the avenues of Paris for the rolling hills of Normandy. After fitting the house to his needs—painting its walls in hues of blue and yellow, setting up a studio, and hanging it with his collection of Japanese prints—he turned to the gardens.
He cleared the land of trees, tilled the soil, and enlisted expert gardeners to help him make the most of the Normandy landscape, while introducing plants from as far away as Japan. He initially adopted the French gardening tastes of his day, though drawing from his artistic instincts, he would eventually develop a style all his own, carefully plotting out a geometric patchwork of flowerbeds, installing arches that would be enveloped in flora, and engineering moments of light and color that would occur throughout.

Vahé notes that, when it came to the gardens, Monet was driven by desire and instinct. He’d once decided on the spur of the moment that he wanted chrysanthemums, and wrote a letter to friend and fellow painter Gustave Caillebotte to find out where he could get them.
Monet prided himself on the garden, acknowledging it as his own creation, but also as his open-air studio, where he planted himself for hours on end to paint, weather permitting. In the Japanese water garden, which he developed later, he installed a large studio.
Though the time Monet spent at Giverny is often associated with the artist’s darker works and periods of personal turmoil, particularly around World War I, the gardens are said to have instilled in the artist a sense of joy, as well as the motivation to create the works that would later be credited with pushing Western painting towards abstraction.
And Vahé works tirelessly to realize for visitors to Giverny the vision of the gardens they’re expecting from those paintings—the vibrant, flowery oasis or the serene waterlily sanctuary that they fell in love with at a museum, through an art history book, or on a poster.
He works with a team of 10 full-time gardeners, as well as volunteers, from worldly horticulturists to teenage French apprentices. While the gardeners typically work from 7 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., with a long lunch in between, Vahé notes that his days often begin before then and last until 8 p.m. No day is typical; his hours might be filled with watering plants, ordering seeds or bulbs for future seasons in his office across the road (the seeds are primarily sourced from Japan and the U.S.), visiting a supplier in Vernon, tending to plant production in greenhouses, or guiding film crews through the gardens.
The plants we see today are not exactly the ones that Monet painted a century ago, and they’re not all placed where they were when the artist lived, but Vahé believes that’s not what’s important. Rather, he works to maintain the original aesthetic—a certain profile of color and light—that corresponds to Monet’s vision.
Central to this approach is putting light-colored flowers—whites and yellows—in every area of the shade; and placing dark colors in juxtaposition to paler colors. It’s also crucial to create a density of vegetation along the garden’s central path, and to develop moments where the viewer is fully immersed in plants, so that the sky is barely visible.
In some cases, though, a faithfulness to Monet’s original garden is maintained precisely, as in the beds of enormous crimson red geraniums just in front of the house. Those beds, which are central to foot traffic, need to be uprooted and filled with new soil every 10 to 15 years. Other plants, however—like a type of Japanese anemone that Monet kept—they’ve found they cannot cultivate today.
Tumblr media

Vahé stresses that man cannot control nature, but rather must adapt to it. “La nature n’est pas rigide,” he says. Despite this, it’s clear that Vahé and his team have a way with nature. Scan the grounds and you’ll notice the way plants are just the right height and impossibly rich in color, and yet they retain an aesthetic that’s not at all pruned or manicured like the gardens you’d find in Versailles. Instead, they feel abundant and relatively wild.
Observing the evolution of the plants has always been central to Vahé’s love for his job. He intended to learn to paint during his six-year retirement (inevitably inspired by his time spent working in the shadow of Monet), but every time he found a teacher or a class, circumstances cropped up that disrupted his lessons. Most recently, when he began painting at a school in Vernon, the director of Fondation Monet called him, asking him to return to his post as head gardener. He didn’t miss the post at Giverny, he says, because all the while he was tending to his own garden, a stone’s throw away.
If Vahé were a millionaire, he says, he would be spending his money on the gardens, and doing the same thing he does now. When I tell him that I believe his job is essential to preserving Monet’s legacy, he agrees, though quickly adds that it’s a charge he now shares with his team. When the team has high morale, he adds, you can see it in the garden, you can feel their positive spirits.
Will his team be ready when Vahé does finally retire and pass the baton? “J’espere” (“I hope so”), he says with a laugh.
At the moment, he shows no signs of slowing. His favorite time of day in the garden occurs just after sunrise, when it’s barely light. The first light that comes up is blue, and it lasts just five minutes, he says, then turns pink, red, and yellow. It was during those early hours that Monet, too, would rise and begin painting.
He notes that in the early days, during restoration, he preferred autumns in the gardens, but now he finds that it’s spring he enjoys the most. Why has his preference changed? He’s just a simple human being, he suggests, and one always wants what they don’t have. When you’re young you want to be old, he adds, and when you’re old, you want to be young.

When it comes to lipsticks, I was a late bloomer but thank God, I have fully embraced it now. So when I had the chance to check out yet to be released lipsticks from all natural brand Burt’s Bees, well, I jumped at it.
When I got to the venue, it was lipstick heaven. Aside from unveiling new lipsticks and lip crayons, the brand also had its previous products on display.
I admit, I was more acquainted with Burt’s Bees lip balms, not so much with their lipsticks and lip crayons so it was a great opportunity to indulge and soak it all in. There was champagne too, doesn’t hurt right? And makeup artists on hand to help us try the various shades.
Starting with the new Natural Lipstick Collection which comes in 18 shades – 5 in pink and corals, 4 reds, 3 nudes and 6 in my favourite plums and berries. I found the lipsticks to be very rich and pigmented which shouldn’t be surprising I guess, considering it has natural moisturisers including beeswax, moringa oil and raspberry seed oil.
Aside from delivering bold colour, the lipstick also hydrate and moisturise lips for up to 8 hours. It definitely fits the tag – lipstick that loves you back appropriately. Thanks to the makeup artists at the event, I learned how two shades can be mixed to form a deeper shade or two different shades to form entirely new shades. I love that the possibilities are endless which is very exciting.
Another new release to look forward to from Burt’s Bees is their Gloss Lip Crayons (£9.99). Also all natural, made with shea butter, jojoba oil, kendi oil and community sauced beeswax. As someone who’s obsessed with plums and berry coloured lipsticks, I couldn’t choose a favourite colour – maybe the Bordeaux Vines, just don’t hold me to it because the Pacific Coast and Tahitian Sunset look pretty good too.
The Gloss Lip Crayons comes in 6 lush shades – Bordeaux Vines, Outback Oasis, Pacific Coast, Pink Lagoon, Santorini Sunrise and Tahitian Sunset.
Swatches of my favourite Gloss Lip Crayons:
                                                                                                                    Bordeaux Vines
                                                                                     Pink Lagoon
                                                                          Tahitian Sunset
And now to the favourite lipsticks …
                                                                               Tulip Tide & Magenta Rush
Juniper Water & Crimson Coast & Suede Splash
