while fixing my flat tire this morning i pondered the question if and who of the cyclists know how to do it. like not only change a whole wheel, but get the tube out, find the hole, put the little sticker on it, get it back in (be so fucking frustrated bc now the brakes are making weird things and when they come back 20mins later the fucking tire is fucking flat again)? what do you think? which of them would feel me?
this is a SUPERB question and one that merits much consideration 🤔
i'm assuming/hoping they all at one point or other, did in fact know how to maintain their own bikes (hmmm. most of them at least.)
however, after many years of being handed a shiny new sponsor bike every January and spending almost all of their time riding a handful of minutes away from a team car/mechanic/NSV for spare bikes/wheels, it's entirely possible they've forgotten. having a crack team of mechanics servicing your bike's every need will undoubtedly lead to forgetting stuff
okay seriousness over let's get silly!
long gone are the days of pros carrying spare tubes over their shoulders (which is a shame because it's hot), but who, given the opportunity, would be capable of fixing a puncture?
direct evidence:
Wout van Aert ✔️
Tumblr media
growing up as a teenager in cross without an eminent father and the connections that brings, bikepacker in the off season, wout can 100% fix it himself and wash the bike at the end of the ride
at the opposite end of of the spectrum, G ✖️
Tumblr media
after eighteen years as a pro i'm not sure whether g remembers how to change rim brake pads let alone discs. the team give him a fresh pinarello and he rides it. simple. when it breaks a mechanic gives him another one. though once he retires the knowledge will come back to him
distantly justified gut feelings/completely unjustified Visions:
tadej ✔️ he can change tubes but always forgets the left pedal screws the opposite way
remco ✖️ owns at least one unnecessarily fancy multitool that he has never used. aero nerd but basic maintenance eludes him
mathieu ✔️ but it will take a fair while because he has not done it in soooo long and he doesn't remember to check the tyre for embedded sharps (this could be causing your repeated flat or the tube may be caught between tyre bead and rim)
jasper ✖️ forgets shoes and socks on training camp. has never bought his own inner tubes; begs one from someone else on the group ride and then struggles with a tyre lever for 20 minutes before someone takes pity
jonas ✔️ part time carpenter adept at handiwork, has been given the same unnecessarily fancy multitool as remco (BY remco? at the vuelta?) but it's unused in favour of an infinitely more practical one.
tom (pidcock) ✔️
joshy t ✖️ the lad vaguely knows what an innertube is and that you can pop them by putting the pressure too high but has never had to handle one himself
mads ✔️✔️ father (dads pedersen, if you will) runs a bike shop. not only can mads change a tube in under four minutes but he will show others how to look after their bikes and get irritated at poor maintence
matej ✔️✔️✔️ in another timeline it's moho instead of frank herzegh who invents tubeless tyres

Defeated. A morning wasted trying to fit a new tyre. Three broken tyre levers, scratched rim decals, mangled rim tape that I've had to replace. Another 'benefit' of tubeless tyre and wheel systems: mentally tight tolerances that have turned what was a simple procedure into an extended wrestling match. Thanks, bike industry!
Mahoosive steel tyre levers and an assortment of weird gizmos on order. I'll try again once I have them, after first leaning the tyre against a radiator for one of the few periods I switch the heating on...

The 2024 Africa Twin: A True Adventure Machine
Tumblr media
Honda's iconic Africa Twin receives significant updates for 2024, enhancing its performance and versatility for adventure riders.
The Africa Twin has long been synonymous with adventure riding, capturing the spirit of exploration and offering riders the confidence to venture further. With the release of the 2024 models, Honda has taken this legendary motorcycle to new heights. The standard Africa Twin and Adventure Sports versions have undergone significant updates, making them more specialized and capable than ever before.
From enhanced off-road performance to improved on-road handling, the Africa Twin lineup offers a wide range of options for riders seeking thrilling adventures on any terrain.
Since its in 1988, the Africa Twin has been a symbol of "True Adventure" in the ADV riding world. Inspired by the NXR750 and NXR800 factory racers that dominated the Dakar Rally in the late 1980s, the Africa Twin created a new market and became a global hit. After a hiatus, the Africa Twin made a triumphant return in 2016 with the CRF1000L, and has since garnered a dedicated following of adventure enthusiasts.
youtube
A Legacy of Adventure
The Africa Twin's history is steeped in adventure and off-road prowess. The original XRV650, introduced in Europe in 1988, was based on the NXR750 and NXR800 racers that conquered the Dakar Rally. It quickly gained popularity and evolved into the XRV750 in 1990, selling over 73,000 units before being discontinued in 2001.
In 2016, Honda revived the Africa Twin with the CRF1000L, offering it in both European and American markets. The following year, the Adventure Sports version joined the lineup, catering to riders seeking a more touring-focused experience. The Africa Twin has since become a staple in the adventure riding community, known for its rugged durability and versatility.
What's New for 2024
The 2024 Africa Twin models receive a host of updates and refinements, enhancing their performance and capabilities. Adventure Sports versions now feature a 19-inch front wheel and shorter suspension travel, optimizing on-road handling and maneuverability. Tubeless tires, previously exclusive to Adventure Sports versions, are now fitted on the standard versions as well, providing convenient repair options without removing the wheel.
The 1,084cc twin-cylinder engine generates stronger power and torque in the low- to mid-rpm range, thanks to a higher compression ratio and updated ECU settings. The Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) has also been improved for smoother engagement at low speeds. Both standard and Adventure Sports versions receive updated electronic settings, a redesigned intake/exhaust layout, and revised styling, making them even more capable and appealing to adventure riders.
Design and Styling
The design of the 2024 Africa Twin models has been refined to enhance their performance and aesthetics. The standard Africa Twin features a slim, compact shape with a redesigned front fairing and rear seat, improving its off-road capabilities. The Adventure Sports versions receive a new front fairing that optimizes aerodynamics and wind protection, as well as a thicker and more comfortable seat.
The Adventure Sports versions also come with a smaller 19-inch front wheel and reduced suspension travel, lowering the bike's center of gravity and improving on-road handling. Both versions maintain the Africa Twin's iconic look while incorporating modern design elements.
Electronic Technology
The 2024 Africa Twin models are equipped with advanced electronic technology to enhance the riding experience. Throttle-by-wire and a six-axis Bosch IMU provide precise control and enable features such as cornering ABS and traction control. The Africa Twin's 6.5-inch TFT LCD touch panel display offers customizable screen arrangements and is compatible with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, allowing riders to connect their smartphones for navigation and communication purposes.
The Adventure Sports versions also feature three-stage cornering lighting for optimal illumination during different types of corners. With these technological advancements, the Africa Twin offers riders a seamless and connected riding experience.
Engine and Drivetrain
All versions of the 2024 Africa Twin are powered by a 1,084cc water-cooled, parallel-twin engine that delivers strong power and torque. The engine has undergone improvements, including a higher compression ratio, optimized ECU settings, and an updated muffler design. These enhancements result in increased performance and improved driveability across the rev range.
The Africa Twin is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or Honda's innovative Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The DCT version offers seamless gear changes and can be operated in automatic or manual mode, providing riders with the flexibility to choose their preferred shifting style.
Chassis and Suspension
The Africa Twin's chassis and suspension have been designed to handle a wide range of terrains and riding conditions. The steel semi-double-cradle frame provides optimal rigidity and flexibility for challenging situations, while the aluminum swingarm ensures rigidity and lightness. The standard Africa Twin models feature fully adjustable front and rear suspension, with long-travel Showa forks and a Pro-Link® rear suspension system.
The Adventure Sports versions are equipped with Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (EERA™), which adjusts damping based on bike speed, stance, and fork behavior. This high-tech suspension system allows riders to customize their suspension settings for different riding scenarios, ensuring optimal comfort and performance.
Brakes and Safety Features
The 2024 Africa Twin models are equipped with advanced braking systems and safety features to provide riders with confidence and control. Dual front 310mm petal-style floating rotors and radial-mount four-piston calipers deliver consistent stopping power, while the rear rotor features a petal design for efficient braking. The ABS system is designed to adapt to different riding conditions, with separate modes for on-road and off-road performance.
The system utilizes information from the IMU to detect rear-wheel lift and adjust braking pressure accordingly. Riders can also switch off the rear ABS for more precise off-road braking. Additionally, Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) helps optimize acceleration performance by providing smooth slide control and wheelie control.
Accessories and Customization
Honda offers a wide range of accessories for the Africa Twin, allowing riders to customize their motorcycles to suit their preferences and riding style. From aluminum luggage to higher and lower seats, there are options to enhance comfort, storage, and functionality. Honda also offers accessory packs, such as the Rally Pack, Adventure Pack, Urban Pack, and Travel Pack, which provide a combination of accessories tailored to specific riding needs.
Whether riders are looking for added protection, increased storage capacity, or improved touring capabilities, the Africa Twin's accessories allow for endless customization possibilities.
The 2024 Africa Twin lineup represents the pinnacle of adventure riding, combining Honda's rich heritage with cutting-edge technology and performance. With updates and refinements across the board, these motorcycles offer unparalleled versatility and capability on any terrain. Whether riders are tackling off-road trails, exploring remote landscapes, or cruising on scenic highways, the Africa Twin delivers an exhilarating and unforgettable riding experience.
With its legendary status and the latest advancements, the Africa Twin continues to inspire riders to push their boundaries and embark on new adventures.

Got my first “sealant isn’t fixing this” flat on my tubeless tires today. As I came up a climb I heard a “squoosh, squoosh” sound so I stopped to check if I had a flat. I saw a pool of sealant on my tire which didn’t appear to be sealing so spun the wheel quickly to see if that sorted it. It did and I rode 2 minutes up the road to catch up with Dan, tell him what had happened and assess whether we needed to put more air in the tyre. While checking it out, he pressed it and this re-opened the cut 🙈😭 we tried to seal it again but it just wouldn’t seal and even though we deployed a dart I think we just had too little sealant and too big a hole for it to work.
I hung out on the sidewalk outside a country store for about 90 minutes while Dan rode home, and got the car to pick me up.
(Yes I had tubes and boots with me but at that point it was pretty clear the tyre was toast and I didn’t want to risk changing it and still not being able to get home on it.)
Oh well, this is a chance to get some new tyres and see how they feel. I’m not a huge fan of what I have on at the moment (the stock ones that came with the bike) so I’m a little excited to get to try something different. Looking at the Schwalbe G1 speed.

Learning new things.
My new wheels arrived for the Canyon. It came with alloy wheels and quite fat tires. Upside of that is the ride was soft and comfortable. Downside it was as aero as a comfort bike without the wicker basket. The tires were chubby.
So I fussed and fretted and shopped and bought a set of carbon 50mm deep HUNT Aero 50s. They were on sale as I think that particular design is being replaced. It cost a bit more than the set of wheels from China, but at least I am buying from a company based in the UK. Everything is built in Asia, and if I have a choice for Bike bits Taiwan is number one as this is. And the UK respects warranties.
I had to learn about mounting bike discs. Not as straight forward as I thought.
The wheels arrived and yesterday I set about installing them. I had to swap the brake discs on both wheels which I had never done, and the cassette on the rear which I have done hundreds of times. I thought that the tool used to remove the threaded part securing the discs was actually the same one used to do the cassette. At least that was as advertised. Nope.
I had another tool that grabbed the outside of the part rather than the inside as this thing had bumps for both types. That tool is for bottom brackets. I had a hard time with them as I felt the tool slip. Oh dear do I have to go to the bike shop? I almost gave in. I even took a small torch to heat the piece thinking that would help. No Joy. So I looked at doing the other wheel so at least one would be ready. Then I realized the slipping like a bump was actually not between the tool and the nut, but part of the retaining detentes on the the ring thing. Emboldened I went for it.
The brake discs were swapped. Then the cassette. If you have done one of those stacked cassettes its so much fun right? Almost there.
I had a new set of tires I had bought last year when I thought that Trek was coming. These were Pirelli Velo 25s. I found lots of conflicting information on these mounting them on the HUNT wheels.
First Pirelli had a chart on the box with recommended minimum pressures. As listed for my body weight it was 105 psi MINIMUM! HUNT had listed for my body weight a maximum pressure of 95 psi. Errr.
The HUNT wheels are wider with an internal width of just a bit more than 19mm rather than the standard 17mm. That means my 25 mm tires become 28mm wide when mounted. A note on the Pirelli box said if you have a 19mm wide rim you can reduce the pressure by 9 psi. OK that gives me 96 psi which is close to the HUNT figure. Further Pirelli says if the road is rough you can reduce the pressure another 5 psi. Damn this is complicated.
I go on the Pirelli website and my tires are no longer listed. They have new ones. The closest to mine are now 26mm. Also it seems that some tires can be run either tubeless or not. The wheels will work tubeless, but I have heard bad stories about tubeless. One friend says they are always going flat and last only a month or two. He is a big guy. ( A bit heavier than I am.)
It gets weirder in that they now have exotic inner tubes for Pirellis at least that are very light so they weigh less than tubeless and even tubular glue-on tires. Those tubes are almost the same price as the tires, and you need a special patch kit if they puncture. Too much for my brain right now. I am recycling some old rubber inner tubes for now and have some new ones on order.
I decided to set the tire pressure to 95 psi on the rear and 85 on the front. The rear takes about 2/3s of my weight. No bike riding position evenly distributes the weight front to back. If I stand on the pedals it is more like 60% / 40%. I enjoyed the lack of buzz on my hands with the fat tires. Lower pressure helps.
I also have to tweak the derailleur as the new wheels shifted the cassette a wee bit. Maybe I should have popped in that spacer. Was it for 10 to 11 speed, or 11 to 12 speed? No FN idea. A twist of the adjuster fixes it. That is the one real advantage of a Di2 shifter. It adjusts itself.
So all buttoned up and I will see on today's VYR run. I'm Aero again!

The bold graphics and signature orange accents make it unmistakably KTM, while the practical inclusion of a sturdy skid plate and handguards reinforces its off-road readiness. The windscreen and fairing are aerodynamically optimized to reduce wind resistance, offering a more comfortable ride on long journeys.
Performance and Engine
At the heart of the KTM 890 Adventure R is an 889cc parallel-twin engine that delivers an impressive 105 horsepower and 100 Nm of torque. This refined engine offers a perfect balance of power and efficiency, making it suitable for a variety of riding conditions.
The advanced electronics package, including ride-by-wire throttle, traction control, and multiple ride modes (Street, Off-road, Rain, and Rally), allows riders to tailor the bike’s performance to their specific needs. Suspension and Handling
One of the most impressive aspects of the KTM 890 Adventure R is its suspension setup. The bike features WP XPLOR fully adjustable suspension, with a 48mm front fork and a rear shock absorber. This system provides exceptional damping performance, ensuring a smooth ride over uneven surfaces.
With 240mm of travel on both ends, the suspension is designed to tackle rough terrain with ease, making it ideal for adventure riders who frequently venture off the beaten path. The bike comes with a full-color TFT display that provides all essential information, including speed, RPM, fuel level, and navigation prompts. Comfort and Ergonomics
Long rides demand comfort, and the KTM 890 Adventure R doesn’t disappoint. The rally-style seat is designed for extended hours of riding, providing ample support and cushioning. The seat height is adjustable, catering to a wide range of rider preferences and body types.
The adjustable handlebars and foot pegs ensure an ergonomic riding position, whether you’re seated or standing. The bike’s windscreen effectively deflects wind, reducing fatigue during highway cruising.
Fuel capacity is another critical factor for adventure bikes, and the 890 Adventure R features a large 20-liter fuel tank. With its efficient engine, the bike offers an impressive range, minimizing the need for frequent refueling stops on long journeys.
Safety and Durability
Safety is paramount when exploring uncharted territories, and the KTM 890 Adventure R comes with an array of features to keep riders secure. The cornering ABS and off-road ABS systems provide reliable stopping power, even in low-traction scenarios. The bike’s sturdy build and high-quality components ensure durability, making it capable of withstanding the rigors of adventure riding.

Essential Safety Features to Look for in an Electric Scooter
Electric scooters are highly popular as an eco-friendly and convenient mode of commuting, especially preferable in urban areas.
With increasing traffic congestion, key features of electric scooters are highly valued by Indian buyers.
Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, safety features can improve your ride.. In this blog, let’s explore the top features crucial for an electric scooter
Are electric scooters safe?
Electric scooters are generally safe when used properly and maintained regularly. Accidents may occur due to factors like harsh riding, poor infrastructure, or lack of protective gear, but these risks can be reduced.
To stay safe, wear a helmet, follow traffic rules, and ride in designated lanes. Check your brakes, tires, and battery often to keep your scooter in good condition
Be aware of your surroundings and adjust your speed accordingly. Overall, safety relies on responsible riding, proper equipment, and regular upkeep.
List of Safety Features to Look for in an Electric Scooter
Tumblr media
1. Reliable Braking Systems
A reliable braking system is a must for the rider’s safety. Electric scooters typically offer various braking features:
Disc Brakes: Known for their responsive braking, disc brakes have strong stopping power, especially in wet or slippery conditions. The Joy e-bike Mihos comes with disc brakes which enhances safety and control during rides. It is particularly ideal for urban environments or for hilly terrains.
Regenerative Braking: This system helps in slowing down the scooter but also recharges the battery slightly during braking. Dual braking systems, like disc and regenerative brakes, provide better control in emergencies
2. Tyres and Suspension Features
Your scooter’s tyres and suspension play a critical role in how stable and comfortable your ride is. These important features include:
Pneumatic (Air-filled) tyres: These provide excellent shock absorption and better grip, especially on uneven roads.
Solid tyres: While they’re low-maintenance, solid tyres don’t offer the same level of cushioning as pneumatic ones, which can make rides on rough terrain less comfortable.
The Joy e-bike features durable tubeless tires with a 2.15 x 12-inch profile, mounted on sturdy alloy wheels. This combination offers excellent traction, puncture resistance, and low rolling resistance, ensuring a smooth and efficient ride on various terrains.
3. Suspension Systems
Tumblr media
Scooters with front and rear suspension handle bumps better on Indian roads.
Mihos by Joy e-bike provides a comfortable and controlled ride with a suspension setup that includes telescopic suspension forks in the front and a dual-shock absorber at the rear.
This configuration effectively absorbs shocks and vibrations from various road conditions, improving overall handling and stability.
4. Lights and Reflectors
Tumblr media
Visibility is crucial for rider’s safety, especially when riding at night or in low-light conditions:
Front and Rear LED Lights: These are essential for lighting the road ahead and ensuring you’re visible to others.
Brake Lights: Alerting vehicles behind you when you slow down or stop is critical to avoiding accidents.
Side Reflectors: They enhance your visibility from all angles, adding an extra layer of protection in darker conditions.
Avoiding Over-Speeding Accidents
Managing your scooter’s speed is critical for safe riding in different environments:
Speed Limiter: Setting a maximum speed prevents the scooter from going too fast, especially in congested areas.
Throttle Response Control: A smoother acceleration reduces the risk of losing control.
5. Multiple Riding Modes:
Having the option to switch between Eco, Normal, and Sport modes allows you to adjust your speed for different scenarios, enhancing both control and safety. Such modes are available in the Joy e-bike Mihos, helping you optimise your vehicle usage.
6. Weight and Frame Durability
A sturdy frame and proper weight capacity are essential for long-term safety:
Aluminium or Steel Frames: These materials provide durability and impact resistance, reducing the chances of the frame bending or breaking in an accident.
Weight Limits: Exceeding the weight limit can affect stability and performance, making the scooter harder to control.
The Joy Wolf plus e-bike uses an aluminium frame. Aluminium is a common choice for electric bike frames due to its combination of strength, durability, and lightweight properties.
7. Battery Safety Features
One of the biggest battery concerns for electric vehicle owners is overheating. How to tackle this?
1. Battery Management System (BMS): This monitors the health of the battery, including temperature and charging levels, to prevent overcharging and overheating.
2. Certified Lithium-Ion Batteries: Look for scooters with certified batteries to reduce the risk of electrical malfunctions.
3. Fire-Resistant Casing: This adds an extra layer of protection against potential fire hazards.
8. Anti-Theft Features
Keeping your electric scooter safe is as important as riding it safely. So here are some features that can help you with keeping your electric vehicle safer.
GPS Tracking: This allows you to locate your scooter in case of theft.
Built-in Alarms: Loud alarms can deter theft attempts.
Locking Mechanisms: Always opt for a scooter with strong, built-in locks for added security when parked.
9. Protection Against Weather Elements
Riding in the rain requires your scooter to be water-resistant.
IP Ratings: Look for scooters with high IP ratings for water and dust resistance, ensuring your scooter can handle various weather conditions.
Protection of Sensitive Components: Ensure the motor and battery are shielded from moisture to avoid damage and accidents.
